One solution is that SGs should have a BASE and then doors/portal which lead to a single players room. Something which is a plot for that one person and they have complete freedom to do with that personal plot as they see fit. Bases become a hub for access to personal housing rather than being the end of it. You see this in many comics, each member of the Fantastic Four having their own room, Reed has his lab for example. Or the Xavier institute being a campus where members of the team have their own little corner to themselves.
What would be nice is that the SG as a whole can contribute to the base itself and the base can be expanded as a seperate entity to each members induvidual 'room'. If players are then given their own plots which they can expand and develop seperate from the SG base but linked through it so any member of the SG can wander in and have a look then it creates a fictionally consistant equivilent of personal housing which you see in many MMOs.

/signed, Tal. The Justice League satellite HQ also had some living quarters as well. It's very "comic-booky" to have quarters in a base. I'm all for it. -

It's the cost of the functional aspects of bases people [censored] about.
Few people care about the aesthetics of bases. It's just not obviously an expression of one's self, especially if it's been designed by 20+ people, or by someone else. That's the crucial difference between costumes and bases.
If no one cares about the aesthetics of bases, it all comes down to function ... and there's not a whole lot of function in there.
And, FWIW, I don't see a lot of cloned heroes running around anymore. SGs built on very limited themes, such as everyone wears white and looks sparkly, tend to not last very long.

Thanks for taking time to drop a response, States. I don't wanna get mushy but you certainly know what kind of passion the CoX fanbase has. For good or else, this game you helped create REALLY means a lot to most of its players. You're certainly seeing some of it now.

Other really excellent ideas have been offered that would have been easy to create, but have also been ignored.
[/ QUOTE ]
I would not presume that any of our ideas are "easy". One thing I've learned from being a coder, most of the time you can't really tell how difficult something is until you know the legacy code.
I would not assume the devs are ignoring us. This is all a complex cost/benefit analysis. Remember, most of the game is not bases, so significant effort put into bases is benefiting a minority of the game. For example, if the choice comes down to adding some features to bases or making missions more dynamic, I'd choose the mission upgrades without question.

INow, just like the old forums, the first hero you meet in Outbreak if you are a new player, is Kiyotee(Coyote).

One of the finest in-game tributes offered to the passing of a true friend. On that one act... a shining moment of time is frozen. When two seeming unreachable realities are united.

Yeah. Making Coyote teaching new heroes in Outbreak was one of the best things they've ever done to this game. I personally never met Kiyotee, but I've heard many, many stories. I wish I had gotten on the forums sooner, I might've had a chance to meet this wonderful man.

I see one major problem with a Marvel Super Heroes MMO. I don't see how they could ever balance it. If a game like this one has balance problems imagine a game like that. And how on earth do you account for multiple versions of the same marvel character? A team of four Wolverines? There is only one Wolverine? More than one would just feel lame.
[/ QUOTE ]
I would be shocked if they let you play as signature characters, really.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agreed, I'm pretty much assuming all the major marvel characters will either be contacts or "Pets" that come along on missions.
[/ QUOTE ]
Matrix Online used to delete people who made copycat Morpheus and Neo characters. Starwars galaxies didn't like you making copies of their famous characters either. The fact is that if you can't control how your trademarks and copyrighted characters are used and percieved by others then you are infact in violation of the copyright and/or trademark laws since you're not working to protect the IP.
By allowing some 8yr old to make a character who is exactly like Spiderman and then go jumping around and cursing on broadcast while griefing people then it portrays a bad image of the person they look like. Thus you'll NEVER be allowed to make a character who is a copy or too similar to copyrighted/trademarked figures.
If the devs want some advice is this. People WANT to be Spiderman, Hulk or whatever. If they don't allow folks to do that then people will be disapointed. So here's a suggestion. Let people take control of these characters inside of instanced missions, let the AI take control of their character OR have them trying to save/rescue their character.
Imagine this. Your character is sent on a mission by Thor to stop a plot of Doctor Doom's to take over the world. You fight through the mission all fine and then in the final room you're face to face with Doc Doom while solo. He totally kicks you're characters butt. The scene switches and now you (the player) is taking control of Thor who is aware of your character being captured and is now going to have to save them from Doc Doom. This means you're not only inside an instanced mission so you're not going to grief someone else, you're in a contained environment and its very very cool because for a brief time you ARE Thor.
If this was a team mission something similar would happen except that you'd have a set of signiture heroes assigned to help Thor. So lets say the mission (when done by a team) allows all of the team to get captured and each member is taken to a selection screen showing what signiture heroes they can control for the 'rescue' part. They each select one person each and off they go with each player controlling a different signiture hero.
Sounds like it would work huh?
[/ QUOTE ]

Just thought i'd make a comment on why I think bases arn't as popular as States might have wanted it...
It's not as...personal, as your costume. You don't own your base. Your SG leader/s do/es. Theres a kind of dissconnect between you and it. When I walk into my SG's base, it doesin't feel like it's mine. It's this extra thing.
Now, I do have a suggestion for trying to change that.
Give players there own rooms in an SG base. One they can ajust to their hearts content, ala aparments. Theres a good chance that such a thing would mess up the SG's intended design, dissrupting Raid flow, just being to large, ect. To deal with that I would make it only avalable to Members who earn enough Pre/Salvage to buy a 'Portal' type item.
Like elevators in normal missions, clicking on one sends you to a new area off the normal map. The room would only be able to house non-functioning items. Room size/number of items you could have would be based on Pre earned for the SG.
And of course only the person who MADE the room would have the ablity to edit it and enter it, with some sort of command to alow others to get in. Also the option to restrict who can make these rooms based on Rank would be a good idea.
Summary: Not enough personal investment in SG-bases. Answer? Give players their own personal rooms.
[/ QUOTE ]
That sounds like an elegant solution to some different player goals. Why NOT combine apartment requests with group bases to give 'em a little more personal connection? I LOVE our SuperGroup on Infinity and CONSTANTLY play my alts in SG Mode to support the group and our base, but given a choice of a room to design, it'd truly feel like HOME.
And let's face it, this is NOT without precident. Most famous super teams like the Justice League and Avengers regularly build some sort of living quarters for their members. -

[/ QUOTE ]
...provided that it doesn't lead to a drop in your commitment to fixing bugs in individual missions.
Don't get me wrong. It will definitely be good to know a mission can be dropped if we can't complete it, but at the same time we do want to complete those missions too.
Many missions, especially the ones prone to being bugged, have something special inside them that makes them more important to players than a standard one. People will invariably get more upset over not being able to do the 30 Fir Bolg mission, for example, or the last mission of a story arc than a regular "Defeat X and his minions" one. Being able to drop the mission is less desirable than being able to complete it.

Just thought I'd add this story from the meet & greet that Posi told us:
My wife was commenting how she like to watch her character's posterior (she has a female character ironically - she's jelous of her avatar's figure). Matt used to work for Eidos back when they were developing Tomb Raider. Ironically, the reason why the main character for Tomb Raider is a shapely woman is apparently for the same reason. When your demograph are males ages 16-40, and they have to play most of the game looking at a character's backside the whole game, what kind of backside do you suppose they would like the most?

This is the reason why my friend's cousin keeps making female toons. And I can't say I blame him. -

Because I am a firm believer in the need for multiple playthroughs to see/achieve everything. I don't agree with being able to earn all the badges/fully experience every mission on a single playthrough. And fixing it so you can't earn badges through missions that are not your own is a good way to fix that.
