If the VIP server is named Flarstux I'll move a bunch of my guys there. Otherwise, hey - new slots for new tewns! Woo hoo!

I'm not sure I can sustain interest in this thing if it's just another Wheel of Time (author dies before series wraps up) or Aubrey-Maturin (author gets really tired and falls off in quality as series nears end) thing in the making.
If Wikipedia can be trusted, two more after Dance: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.
  6. I think it would be nice if there was a way for free/premium players to earn Paragon Points in game.

  9. A lot of people who fought Trapdoor before that patch. He was a big silly pushover before that patch. Hell, my electric/ice tanker clobbered him without even bothering with the bifurcates. My human-form WS was defeated once, but rezzed on the spot and with the help of a single fluffy, finished him off post haste.

After that patch, though... well, there were still controllers allegedly defeating him in 10 seconds or less, but none of my other guys could replicate that feat or defeat him without having to take out an inordinate amount of bifurcates in the process, which I found not challenging at all, but ANNOYING. Much like trying to light a candle while being pelted with water balloons.

    /win.

For the record, I canceled my subscription several days ago in protest of the game's 'new' direction. Bored with the old, annoyed by the new - what's a poor unhappy subscriber to do?

That thing is: Why are so many people obsessed with being rewarded for the time they spend playing City of Heroes?

I see complaints about the drop rate of Incarnate Shards, purples, and any other thing that you get while you're playing, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it is so important that people get these things.

Try something real quick: Think back to when you first started playing the game, and why. I can guarantee that, whatever your reason for playing the game was, it did not involve purple drops or Incarnate Shards. In fact, I would go so far as to say you started playing the game because it was fun.

Now, when I read the forums, it seems that for a lot of people, the amount of fun they have is directly connected to the amount of rewards they get while playing.

Look at anything else you do for enjoyment. Lets say you enjoy bowling, for example. When you go out bowling with your friends, you're going out for the express purpose of going bowling. Having fun while bowling is it's own reward. You don't get upset that you didn't get a trophy for it, you had fun bowling and that was the point of doing it.

Why are video games, and MMOs in particular, so different? You would think that it would be the same. If you go bowling to have fun, why wouldn't you play video games for the same reason?

But I see a lot of people saying that they are playing to get the rewards associated with it, and complaining when they feel that they aren't getting them fast enough. That would be the same thing as going bowling and getting upset that you didn't get a trophy at the end of the night.

What happened to the fun? Why do people feel the need to be rewarded for entertaining themselves? You don't expect a reward from watching TV or a movie. You don't expect a reward for playing catch with your son (or dad, as the case may be). You don't epect a reward for going bowling, or hanging out with your friends. In all of those activities you do to entertain yourself, the fun you have while doing it IS the reward.

Why is a video game so different?
A bowling alley doesn't keep adding things like purple bowling ball recipes that increase your chance of rolling a strike or offer you a badge if you pull off five hundred 7-10 splits.

If we have a reward-driven mentality here it's because the devs have driven us to it with all these rewards.

Boo! BOO!! BOO!!! To the devs if that's what they do.

As much as I enjoyed the Praetorian journey with my Loyalist Corruptor, as much as I felt that I was along for the ride while my character grew and developed right before my eyes with every choice she made, for good or ill, it was all laid waste when she went to Paragon City at level 20.

All that build up... all those revelations... all those opportunities for communication and cooperation, foiled over and over again by blind Resistance hatred and unremitting violence against the people of Praetoria...

    and then...

when at last the incontrovertible truth was revealed...

RESOLUTION DENIED! Go do something else for 20 or 30 levels.

    Never again.

At least not in any fun way.
  16. Hmm, well then, how about this:

!god yzal eht revo spmuj xof nworb kciuq ehT in 10 seconds! 10 seconds - a virtual eternity!

    or

zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba in 10 seconds! Maybe while standing on one foot...

    or

I helped defeat the Mad Typist and all I got was this stupid badge and a token for a free pony ride should such ever be added to the game. in 17 seconds, or 20 if attempted while wearing a beanie cap with a spinning propeller (video proof required)!

That's the beauty of the game - there's heaps and gobs of regular content for those unable or unwilling to rise to the challenge, and their game play won't suffer at all if they don't earn the coveted and prestigious 'Five by Five Flying Fingers of Furious Fury' badge.

If it was easy, anyone could do it - and it wouldn't be a Challenge! Without Challenge, well, where would we be today? Still turning over rocks with sticks to find delicious grub worms! So get out there, people, and sharpen those typing skills!

Personally, I think it's still too easy. How about if, during the 30 second countdown, every 5 seconds there's a 95% chance that a random member of the team will sustain 3500 points of Challenge Damage which can neither be avoided nor resisted. That will make things much more interesting! While still allowing a dedicated soloist to complete the arc, this will encourage teaming, as the more people there are on the team, the lower your chances of being zapped! It's brilliant, if I do say so myself!

  22. Here's a challenge for everyone here, and I'd dearly love to see something like this included as a requirement to advance in the Incarnate System:

The Mad Typist has what you need to advance in the Incarnate System, but he's locked it in a safe that's impervious to all external damage and he's rigged the safe with a timed explosive device that will destroy the safe and its contents - from within! - 30 seconds after you defeat him. The only way to stop the explosion is for you to type The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. twice in five seconds, after the countdown has begun. Be sure to capitalize that first T! Don't forget the period at the end! Spell everything correctly! Copy and Paste won't work - the letters and spaces must be entered in the proper sequence!

Let's Beta Test it! Skip ahead to the end of the big fight...

The Mad Typist: You have... defeated me... but you have not... yet... won... <keels over>.

Safe: Self Destruct sequence activated! Counting down to self destruct in 30... 29... 28...

Never saw any comic book vending machines. Around here they were on those spinner rack thingees that were around 5 or so feet tall, and they were in grocery stores, drug stores, convenience stores, and book stores.

The ones in the grocery stores here nowadays are mostly reprints, and those other places don't have any at all. So, thank goodness for the local comic book shop!

    That's it.

I was off by quite a few years and in the wrong key, but had the chord progression of the chorus right except for a minor chord where a 7th should have been. Whew!
