  1. Taunt is a good set mule, there are a couple of inexpensive Taunts sets with very nice bonuses you might want to slot for. That said, however, I think it's definitely optional for a brute; a "take it if you want it and can fit it in" kind of power. The drawback of taking it so late is that you that if you're taking it for set bonuses, you won't be able to put more than 4 slots in it.

    Other issues with your build:

Your slotting of your defense/resist powers needs some work. A typical defense/resist toggle rarely needs more than 4 slots, and you do NOT need to super-slot non-damage toggles for end reduction, so skip the End and End/Rchg IOs. Passives like RPD rarely need more than 3 slots unless you're slotting for a specific set bonus. Also, it's pointless to slot one single-attribute set IO in a power like the TC in RPD; you're not getting a bonus, and the set IO has exactly the same enhancement value as a common IO of the same level.

The Titanium Coating bonuses are pretty "meh", and since it sounds like you're planning to get Weave, I recommend that you put 4 slots of Reactive Armor in TI, UY and Tough. RA has S/L/E/NE defense bonuses that will stack with Invul, TH and Weave.

In addition, I'd recommend some changes to your power order. UY should be taken when it becomes available at 16; you may want to delay SJ until after Stamina so you'll have room (And BTW, unless you're a 60 month vet, you won't be able to take it unil 14, anyway.) Foot Stomp and Tough Hide should also be taken ASAP; the Fighting pool can be delayed until the 40's if necessary.

The Kinetic Combat set in Punch needs Accuracy as well as Damage; if you want additional end reduction, use a CI Acc/Dam/End instead of the Dam/End.

Slotting the Numina's proc in Dull Pain is not optimal; it will only fire when DP is up. Put it in Health instead and add another Heal common or a Numina Heal, so Health is more completly slotted.

If you want to go slot for more defense bonuses let me know and I can give you some additional suggestions. But I definitely recommend getting the Steadfast +Def and slotting it in one of your resist powers--RPD would be a good choice.

EDIT: I understand this is a respec build, but I recommend using a power order something like this so your build will also work well for malefactoring.

If you're using Mid's and mouse-over a slotted power, any power attribute that shows up in red is past the ED cut-off for that type.

So you're saying skip Stamina? That would be great if I could, but I've never tried it on a melee toon. Otherwise, your advice is very interesting, I'll look into it as soon as I can.
No, no. You'll still need Stamina. But recovery and +end bonuses will help avoid end issues despite Stamina, and can eliminate the need for something like Conserve Power or Physical Perfection.

I definitely want at least two of those, the question is what else should I be looking at now that Epic Pools are on the horizon.

My build is not soft capped to all Def postions, but it's pretty close. I think I've got about 34% Def across the board. I'm all SOs right now, I'll add some IO sets later, but those don't depend on Epic Pools so I'm not as concerned about them. I'll probably start off with some basic +HP and +Regen as soon as I can build up some funds, I'm pretty broke right now.
Urgh, you should have taken "the big three" as soon as they were available. I think a respec is definitely in order, you don't want to wait until the 40s to get all your AoE attacks.

Call_Me_Awesome's advice is sound, as always, but it would help if you could post your current build. Hitting the soft-cap is much easier with Weave, especially if you don't have a lot of influence to spend, and IMO, soft-capping is much more important for a shield tank than adding epic pool powers.
  4. What have you taken from War Mace? I recommend everything but either the tier 2 or tier 3 attacks. Is your build soft-capped to all positions? That's also a big priority and I'd make sure I had that taken care of before considering epic pools.
  5. Just wanted to give an update and a big THANK YOU! to everyone who provided assistance and advice.

Once I figured out where the hard drive was in the laptop, getting it out and moved to my desktop was very simple and straightforward. The biggest problem I had was that the power cable to my regular hard drive came disconnected if you breathed on it wrong, so I spent a lot of time reconnecting it and hoping it would stay connected when I moved the computer.

So the data is recovered, and the laptop packed up and ready to ship. Thanks again, everyone!
  6. Is the Fighting Pool mandatory for tanks? Not at all! You pretty much need to take Weave if you're going to soft-cap defense, but you can make a Invul tank that's plenty sturdy without soft-capping.

Regarding the newest build, if you can't find/afford the Hami-O's for the KC, any Acc/Dam set IO will do fine. A level 50 set IO's enhancement values are just a few percentage points lower than a Hami-O. (I've certainly never bothered with Hamis for that purpose.)

It's been a while since I've posted in this thread, so apologies if I've said this before...but I'm not a fan of ToD for typed def builds. It's a lot of expensive slots for relatively little return. Replacing the ToD in Bonesmasher with another KC set would give you the same S/L def bonus value as a set of ToD *and* the Oblit set. Then you could slot 3 or 4 Eradication in Whirling Hands for a E/NE defense bonus.

That would also free up a slot or two, one of which could go into Taunt for a better S/L bonus for 4 Mocking Beratement. Since you're over the S/L resist cap, you could easily take a slot from RPD, for instance, and use it elsewhere.

Here are the changes I'd make. I've left a couple of slots open to use for procs, or to use as a 6th MB slot in Taunt, if you wish.

  7. For someone who supposedly likes scranking, your attacks are poorly slotted. All the Kinetic Combat sets (except Boxing, if you're using it purely as a set mule) are underslotted for Accuracy and Damage, and need at least another slot--I'd try to find two for KoB.

In addition, Ob Shield, CoD, Death Shroud, Foot Stomp and Weave are all underslotted for end reduction. Physical Perfection will help, but I'm not sure it's going to help *that* much.

Lastly, given that a) you need slots elsewhere, and b) you're looking for typed def rather than positional, I don't think the Gaussian's and BotZ bonuses are worth devoting the slots to get. Instead, you could get a bigger S/L bonus from Rage by slotting 2 Rectified Reticle and 2 common IOs, freeing up two slots for something else.

I also think that Op Gloom is much, much more useful than Soul Transfer, and I'd never make a DA character without it, but that's more personal preference.

Your basic resistance of 12.5% just isn't going to cut it.
I'm a big fan of Gift of the Ancients, and the F/C resist bonus is nice, but it's not something I think is worth deliberately slotting for on an Ice tank. As I said in response to your question about slotting to fill the 'psi hole', it is very difficult for an Ice tank to accrue meaningful levels of psi/fire resistance or defense without sacrificing other goals.

If an Ice tank can fit in Permafrost without giving up something more important, fine, but I think Hoarfrost and S/L/E/NE are always going to be the 'front line' against fire and psi damage.
  9. Honestly, I think the best protection against psi attacks is Hoarfrost, and making sure S/L/E/NE defense is at the soft-cap to protect against attacks that are typed psi and something else.

Starting at zero, getting psi defense or resistance to meaningful levels would require a focus on that goal to the detriment of other (IMO more important) things you could slot for.

I actually think it's an advantage to have more than more than one mez type available to you, since it gives you options if you run into a foe type that's resistant to one or the other.

I don't know where the idea comes from that Stuns are ineffective damage mitigation. Sure, the 10% "chance of" attacks can't be counted on to always work when you need it, but Clobber is completely reliable damage mitigation. Between Jawbreaker and Clobber a Mace tank should be able to handle most situations that come up in the early levels.

Yeah, I replaced the power supply on an old Dell desktop a few years ago and I remember I had to buy a special, Dell-compatible replacement. Kind of a PITA considering it was fairly expensive. Glad to hear they're getting away from that.

    Thanks for your help!

I found this out when a dell of mine failed and I went to put the drive in a different system. It worked fine in an older dell but my new system couldn't read it till I reformatted it.
It's an MSI, so unless there's something I need to know about them, I'll try the desktop drive bay trick.

  14. Thanks, Bill, I'll look for one of those tomorrow...I'm hoping Radio Shack has one. (I'll order from Newegg if I have to, but it's my daughter's laptop and she wants it out and back ASAP.)

    Thanks again!

I was concerned about the warranty too, so asked the rep on the phone that gave me the RMA about it. He said removing the hard drive to back it up wouldn't void the warranty.

I know it's a SATA drive, and I see that the options are for 2.5" and 3.5" drives...I'm guessing it's a 2.5" since space is at a premium on a laptop. At this point, I mostly want to make sure there's not something special I need to get or whether any 2.5" SATA drive enclosure would work.

    Thanks for your help!
  16. Yes, I couldn't get into Justice and it, Protector and Champion are all listed as "Unknown" server status. Bummer.
  17. So this is only kinda sorta a CoH problem, but I'm hoping for some advice/suggestions.

I need to send a laptop back for warranty service, but I'd like to get some data off the hard drive first. (The hard drive is fine, but the laptop screen won't work, most likely a graphics card problem. Hooking it up to an external monitor didn't work.)

The company says they probably won't need to erase the hard drive, but I'd prefer to get a copy of the data before sending it off.

What's the best way to do this? I know I have to take it out of the laptop, but what then? I believe you can buy enclosures for hard drives that would allow me to read the data and copy it elsewhere, but I have no idea what to look for.

    TIA for any help!
  18. Whoa, why all defense the slots in Combat Jumping? It has a small base value, so the benefit you get from those slots is also small. I'd find a better use for at least some of those slots. Why not slot a Kismet +Acc in CJ instead and drop the Serendipity IOs?

Also, as Kioshi said, the Steadfast Def/End is not necessary, but you need that slot in Weave, which is currently underslotted for end reduction.

Stamina is also very overslotted; I take two of those slots out and put them in Health for some non-proc enhancement.

You're also under the soft-cap for S/L without EA on, so I'd try get a little more in the way of bonuses. I'm not usually a fan of Obliteration for typed defense builds, but since you need S/L def a lot more than E/NE at this point, you may want to consider putting an Oblit set in FA.

Here's the changes I would make to your build. (BTW, the new Mid's seems to be defaulting to the UBB forum format, which is why your posted builds look so bad. Try setting it to the vBulletin format before you export.)

  19. Yikes! Your defense toggles are way, way overslotted, and as Aett said, Ice Armor does NOT need KB protection. Unless you're slotting for a specific, very desirable bonus, 4 slots is plenty for a standard defense/resist toggle. So drop all the Karmas and put a LotG Def/Rchg to each defense toggle, which will free up six slots for other things. Similarly, drop the Steadfast Def/End and KB IO and add a Reactive Armor Res/End/Rchg for the S/L bonus.

Wet Ice and Chilling Embrace both need an end reduction slot; pull the recharge from Wet Ice, it's pointless in a toggle.

Health is unslotted for Heal besides the procs, I'd add 2 common heal IOs at least. (or the Numina's Heal and a common IO if you want the Regen bonus.)

As Aett said, Energy Absorption should be slotted for defense as well as end recovery and recharge--and it's currently very overslotted for recovery. The easiest fix is to drop two Efficacy Adaptor slots (I'd suggest Acc/Rchg and Acc/End/Rchg) and replace them with 2 common defense IOs. You could also use two LotG or GotA if you prefer, but it they won't give you as much defense enhancement.

Icicles is woefully underslotted for well, everything, but end reduction is especially important in a high-end damage toggle. Try 4 Erad and 2 Scirocco's Dervish, with one proc with at least 60% end reduction. Multiple procs are okay in some situations, but I wouldn't recommend it for Icicles unless you can fully slot it for Acc and End Red, at least. I'd suggest the same slotting for Frozen Aura, though you don't need quite as much end reduction.

Frozen Fists needs another slot; currently it's underslotted for accuracy and damage. And as Aett said, Freezing Touch needs to be slotted more like a normal attack.

Lastly, the Recharge slots in Hiberate are wasted. I'd recommend pulling two of the slots and use them for something else.

EDIT: You've got plenty of defense, so you could save yourself some influence by replacing the Kinetic Combat set with Smashing Haymaker. And since you're also well above the soft-cap for E/NE, you could use Scirocco's in Frozen Aura instead.

Hmm, I think having the higher defense to S/L/E/NE would be more useful, but it's your build.

If you mean by -end drain and CJ, you're referring to slotting it for end reduction, FYI CJ's end usage is completely negible. (.07 EPS unslotted) I think it makes more sense to slot a LotG Defense instead of a Def/End, and not worry about its end cost.

The other thing you should definitely change is that Jawbreaker is underslotted for accuracy and damage. I think taking care of that is more important than the 6th slot in DP or the 3rd recharge Build Up; both are slotted well past the ED cut-off. For DP, if you simply switch out the DW Heal/End/Rchg for the DW Recharge it will be perma will all the global recharge you have, which would free up the slot to put in JB.

Regarding the Oblits; your call, but if you start have endurance problems keep in mind that those attacks are underslotted for end reduction. You might also want to consider moving the Oblits from WM to Shatter, since WM has the highest end cost of the three attacks that take AoE sets.

You know, I nearly always slot a Kismet +Acc in any non-SS, build, but I completely forgot this time. Good catch!
  22. Good advice from Deus. A couple of other suggestions:

First, I would drop ResEL for Jawbreaker; I just don't find ResEl that useful since F/C damage is relatively uncommon, and JB is a good attack. And *definitely* take CC as soon as its available, IMO it's tied with Clobber for the best attack in the set.

Instead of Impervium Armor, I'd suggest slotting Reactive Armor in all your resist toggles; defense to S/L/E/NE is a lot more useful than Psi defense. And it makes more sense to 4-slot toggles rather than passives because a) they need end red and passives don't, and b) passives have lower base values so it doesn't make as much difference if they're slightly underslotted.

Tough Hide is underslotted; it has the same defense value as Weave and IMO needs 3 slots.

Obliteration is a problematic choice for a typed defense build because it takes a lot of slots for relatively small S/L defense bonus, and because it has very little end reduction in 6 slots. Unless you've got a secondary that has lots of recovery, I wouldn't recommend more than one or at most two attacks slotted with it. I think Eradication is a better choice since it gives a substantial E/NE bonus for 3 slots and you can add other set IOs to make sure it has enough end red.

Here's your build with the changes Deus recommended and mine as well; S/L is soft-capped with 3 in range of Invinc, and E/NE def is considerably higher than in your previous build. I dropped ResEl for Jawbreaker, but you could certainly drop Unstop instead if you prefer. Note that I replaced the KC Dam/End/Rchg for the KD proc in Boxing; if you're just using it as a set mule, you might as well save yourself a lot of infamy and get the cheapest KC you can find.

    Since you asked so nicely...

Actually, it was kind of fun, I haven't done an SO build in a long time. Anyway, here's the build, a high-survivability build that also has plenty of offensive capability. The only IO is the Steadfast +Def, which gives an additional 3% def to everything.

I used CJ/SJ for the additional def bonus from CJ, but you could also go with Air Sup/Fly and drop Energy Punch, which would give you room for Hasten. You can also drop Unstop for Hasten if you prefer, but I like having Unstop on non-soft-capped Invul builds.

You could do this build with Common IOs instead of SOs, and if you use anything above level 30s you'll get better values unless you're bumping up against the ED cut-off. Note though, if you want to move to a set IO build you'd probably have to respec since the optimal slot distribution will be a little different.
