I have been working in mids for quite a while now, trying to come up with a decent Ice/Ice Tank. Having played Abominable Snowbeast to level 41 I feel I have a good handle on playstyle. I am getting ready to use his second build as a Pseudo-Respec. Please tell me what you think of this build guys. I recognize it probably has many holes that will need attention. However, I have contracted screen blindness from working it over so many times. Here ya go.

Well, my question to you is what are you going for on this build? It seems like you were aiming for HP bonuses, but with Hoarfrost up and a couple of the bonuses (or just two of the +HP Accolades), you're going to already be at the HP cap, so I'm not sure that is a great direction to go.

Also, you don't need any -KB IOs, since you've got Wet Ice. As such, those slots could probably go someplace else.

I know this is a respec build, but taking Wet Ice that late to get tough in early seems like a waste, to me. I'd much rather switch those two powers around, mostly because I like to make sure that I get my status protection as soon as possible.

Frozen Touch is one of your best single-target attacks. Slot is as an attack that has the side effect of doing damage. As of right now, Frozen Fists is your only slotted single-target attack, and that's not so good.


You may want to slot Icicles for some EndRed, or at least include some IOs that decrease the end cost. It costs about as much as all of your other toggles combined, except maybe tough and weave. But if you're having many endurance problems, that would be a quick way to solve some of that.

Wet Ice doesn't need any slotting for Recharge. You should be leaving that on all of the time. Slot it for EndRed. As little as that gives you, it's more than a RecRed will give you.


Energy Absorption: This power almost screams frankenslotting. You can get good percentages on RecRed, EndMod, and DefBuff if you slot it well, and you should try to.

Congrats on getting your ice/ice to the defensive soft cap. But personally I'd never want to play this toon.

I have no experience with Ice Melee so I can't really comment on that portion other than this: Only two legitimate attacks until lvl 22 and then you're really only throwing in Ice Patch? Yikes. Hope you're teaming a lot as you're doing no damage what so ever for a while.

I hate seeing most defense/resist powers with more then 4 slots in them. There are exceptions to this rule but the defensive powers in Ice Armor don't fall into those exceptions for me. The steadfast +3% def/res is one of those unique IO's that gets an exception and is great being added to Tough beyond a 4 slotted set of Reactive Armor. The rest of the set bonuses and -kb you're getting out of the Karma sets, I don't think they're worth it. YOU especially don't need the -kb protection with Ice Armor.

No end redux in either Chilling Embrace or Icicles? I prefer having the equivalent of one end redux in Chilling, and the equivalent of two in Icicles.

Hibernate: If I recall correctly you can only use Hibernate every 60 seconds so having a third recharge in it is a waste of a slot.

Again, this is your toon and you need to decide what works best for you.

And Aett said everything already. And why chase so many recovery bonuses when your end problems disappear at 26 with 1 rech io slotted in EA?

I'd do something like this: same regen, less recovery (you don't need much but this build has enough), less hp but dull pain, i mean hoarfrost only has a 9 sec downtime and caps your hp, 80% recharge (with these numbers I'd personally try to fit Hasten in - I take Taunt on all my Tankers too, both of them lol, but kept your powers the same, just rearranged the power order and slotting):

Freezing Touch at 35 seems very late. Do you have enough attacks when SSK'ed down to a lower level? Ice Sword's not much to brag about, but it's kind of a bread & butter attack too. At least pick up Ice Blast from your epic?


An Offensive Guide to Ice Melee

Yikes! Your defense toggles are way, way overslotted, and as Aett said, Ice Armor does NOT need KB protection. Unless you're slotting for a specific, very desirable bonus, 4 slots is plenty for a standard defense/resist toggle. So drop all the Karmas and put a LotG Def/Rchg to each defense toggle, which will free up six slots for other things. Similarly, drop the Steadfast Def/End and KB IO and add a Reactive Armor Res/End/Rchg for the S/L bonus.

Wet Ice and Chilling Embrace both need an end reduction slot; pull the recharge from Wet Ice, it's pointless in a toggle.

Health is unslotted for Heal besides the procs, I'd add 2 common heal IOs at least. (or the Numina's Heal and a common IO if you want the Regen bonus.)

As Aett said, Energy Absorption should be slotted for defense as well as end recovery and recharge--and it's currently very overslotted for recovery. The easiest fix is to drop two Efficacy Adaptor slots (I'd suggest Acc/Rchg and Acc/End/Rchg) and replace them with 2 common defense IOs. You could also use two LotG or GotA if you prefer, but it they won't give you as much defense enhancement.

Icicles is woefully underslotted for well, everything, but end reduction is especially important in a high-end damage toggle. Try 4 Erad and 2 Scirocco's Dervish, with one proc with at least 60% end reduction. Multiple procs are okay in some situations, but I wouldn't recommend it for Icicles unless you can fully slot it for Acc and End Red, at least. I'd suggest the same slotting for Frozen Aura, though you don't need quite as much end reduction.

Frozen Fists needs another slot; currently it's underslotted for accuracy and damage. And as Aett said, Freezing Touch needs to be slotted more like a normal attack.

Lastly, the Recharge slots in Hiberate are wasted. I'd recommend pulling two of the slots and use them for something else.

EDIT: You've got plenty of defense, so you could save yourself some influence by replacing the Kinetic Combat set with Smashing Haymaker. And since you're also well above the soft-cap for E/NE, you could use Scirocco's in Frozen Aura instead.

TF over, dinner over etc etc and its fair to say that everyone has contributed something worth looking into. Swap a couple of powers out and put in haste and taunt and you could generate my ice/ice tanks build from these suggestions. Hibernate though ya might as well forget even a single rechg as the rechg meets the nophase period. Even if it were a PvP build (which isn't because he has AoEs and powers that would be useless in PvP, plus no SS and SJ), he would need zero kb protection.

Most toons with built in KB prot (Wet Ice in this case) also have 1000% res to KB (or 10k %). Only toons with no native kb prot (fire armor, dark armor, ninjitsu, squishies, etc) need 35-41, some would say 45, points of KB prot. in PvP.

First off, THANK YOU!

I have been trying to come up with a decent build for a long time on this guy. I come from a blaster background and really have no experience with tanks. I have read all the posts and have tried to incorporate the suggestions. Though I have been known to be a bit thick in the past, so here is the new build. Feel free to poke holes in it as I want the best Tank I can build. You might notice that I switched to Flame Mastery. This is nothing more than a style choice(though I do like that I can have an endgame attack chain of Fire Ball, Frozen Aura, Freezing Touch, Frozen Aura, Fireball for the win.) Much better, you now have a better ST attack chain with Fire Blast-F. Touch-F. Fists, and perma hoarfrost with the recharge and Hasten.

But Chilling Embrace really doesn't need a Taunt enhancement. Things like the second steadfast could be removed, you have energy absorption, you don't need to waste slots for recovery bonuses. A range IO in Frost could be used instead of the taunt in CE. Mobs already stick to you with CE+Icicles even with CE slotted with one endredux.

Also, click on 'View Active Sets' in Mids. You're capped (more than five) on a LOT of bonuses, like the hp ones. You could use for example performance shifters in E> Absorption instead of E. Adaptors, you don't need a lot of recovery bonuses.

My Ice/Fire tanker stopped having endurance problems when he was still on SO and EA was slotted with 1 recharge SO only. No need for extra slots for tiny recov bonuses like the one in Steadfast, that's the kind of thing you do with Dark Armor

Ok, How's this? I clicked View active Sets but I dont know how to fix that without losing other desired benefits(whether thats set bonuses or just the enhancement values). Any suggestions on fixing the various sets that exceed the 5 limit rule without taking one step forward two back?

Use the phpbb/zetaboards formatting so it appears normally. And post the data chunk please. It's annoying to have to download a file and have mid's open another instance automatically when clicking the link.

But on the build you posted before (not this last that I cannot see), I modified it. Removed all the excess bonuses getting better values in your toggles and restored your defenses to capped, s/l wasn't capped without E. Absorption in the builds 3 posts ago. Put a Kismet unique too in CJ, always a great little IO to have.

Whoa, why all defense the slots in Combat Jumping? It has a small base value, so the benefit you get from those slots is also small. I'd find a better use for at least some of those slots. Why not slot a Kismet +Acc in CJ instead and drop the Serendipity IOs?

Also, as Kioshi said, the Steadfast Def/End is not necessary, but you need that slot in Weave, which is currently underslotted for end reduction.

Stamina is also very overslotted; I take two of those slots out and put them in Health for some non-proc enhancement.

You're also under the soft-cap for S/L without EA on, so I'd try get a little more in the way of bonuses. I'm not usually a fan of Obliteration for typed defense builds, but since you need S/L def a lot more than E/NE at this point, you may want to consider putting an Oblit set in FA.

If you can spare it, then it might be a good idea to put 3 Gift of the Ancients on each of your defense powers, instead of exotic stuff like Luck of the Gambler. The +Regen from Gambler is really nice, but each 3 Slotting of Gift of the Ancients will add +2.5% Fire resistance, and fire damage is a serious vulnerability for Ice tanks.

Your basic resistance of 12.5% just isn't going to cut it.

I'm a big fan of Gift of the Ancients, and the F/C resist bonus is nice, but it's not something I think is worth deliberately slotting for on an Ice tank. As I said in response to your question about slotting to fill the 'psi hole', it is very difficult for an Ice tank to accrue meaningful levels of psi/fire resistance or defense without sacrificing other goals.

If an Ice tank can fit in Permafrost without giving up something more important, fine, but I think Hoarfrost and S/L/E/NE are always going to be the 'front line' against fire and psi damage.

Hey btw, does it matter what level I slot all these enhancements? I really enjoy running TFs and that means a lot of exemping. Should I bother slotting my enhancements at a lower level to make sure I keep them or will that be unneccesary?
