  1. I've read that post, and most of what she said in that thread appears to be more in line with people not respecting others in game or the forums relating to PVP as noted from the mentioning of terms like greifing, breaking EULA, banning. Sounds more like a call for civility more than a failure of a game mechanic as well as getting "constructive" feedback for PVP as opposed to flame fests that apparently follows it unlike other subgroups such as base construction.

Again, i'm not saying there's nothing wrong with PVP mechanics but that Ex Libris post was more a call for order and respect among players. It was directed towards the PVP side of the game only because the strife appears to be found more commonly there than in other sections.

I'll reread it again a bit later in case current feelings are leaving me a bit bias, but so far that's what i'm getting from most of what you quoted.

    EDIT:
    [ QUOTE ]
Your subscription isn't the issue here. What HB is referring to is .................
Is the current PvP system that is in place earning its keep for people who use it for their $15 a month, and is it earning it's keep for the developers. Obviously, the answer is a no. Again I will state, if you are a developer, and you are losing people from the game due to an issue, get rid of that issue.

    [/ QUOTE ]

But i contend that the "issue" or at least the main one in regards to Ex's post is a failure on the player side not respecting each other than the game side turning people off.

If i don't like one aspect of gameplay of CoX that's not enough to quit the entire game. However, if for instance, while participating in the parts i do like i end up getting berated, chided and belittled by, let's say a good portion of the players i need to interact with, then yes that would make me want to find other ways to spend my leisure time.
  2. [ QUOTE ]
That's hairsplitting. Either PVP is earning its keep subscription wise and worth reinvesting revenue in or it's not.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not quite sure what you're getting at here. I don't have a dev quote but from what i can tell, the core of the game is PVE with PVP, crafting, market and other aspects as mini-games, by that i mean they give players options to diversify their CoX experience and as long as there is enough player interest in the other areas, the devs will be intested.

They seem to be all about giving players options.

I don't game the market and i don't PVP but my subscription is not at risk because of my lack of participation in those areas, doesn't mean the devs will stop work on them.

If you prefer to call it splitting hairs that's fine, but i believe having player interest but limited participation in an area means to me that the devs would want to work on it more. Whether or not something happens all depends on the complexity of the task and not so much on the devs lack of interest.

But we're veering off a bit now. The post that started this particular derailment was about a hypothetical situation you posted regarding a PVE-free PVP environment.
  3. [ QUOTE ]
Denial that PVP is just fine in CoX is Whistling In The Dark.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I never said PVP is fine, "interested in" and "enjoy playing" are different things. You wanted clarification why i think there are many people interested in PVP and i mentioned where i got that impression.
  4. This thread and many others like it, forums added for PVP, the contests/events that keeps getting posted and yes i've peeked once in a while in pvp zones, mostly in the top (or bottom now) 4 servers.
  5. [ QUOTE ]
If all the PVE content were removed from the PVP zones I wonder how much development attention CoX PVP would ever see again.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So long as there's enough people interested in PVP, and from what i've seen there are, it will be on the dev radar. What would likely happen, as mentioned, is that the people found in those zones is almost guaranteed to want to fight other players.

Perhaps might be easier for the devs to add more PVP zones or features if they didn't have to think about balancing PVE elements with it.

The main reward of any significance that retains player interest in PVP is in the fun of fighting an intelligent opponent, if you're there fighting unwilling or uninterested opponents, then the challenge is not present and might as well just stick to fighting NPCs.

The devs already tried to entice all players to PVP by adding PVE elements into those zones and as expected, the common result is animosity between divergent personalities and preferences.
  6. [ QUOTE ]
I don't understand why people would complain about something like that.

If you want it, go get it. If you don't like it, don't do it. If it's too hard for you, do something "constructive" to fix it or just leave it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

That specific offshoot of the discussion is a recurring one and ongoing in other threads.
  7. [ QUOTE ]

    Merit System
...spendable merit-alikes can be earned from PVP along with ephemeral "rep", then a broader section of the game can have something to PVP for.

...The selection obviously wouldn't have to be limited to the Siren's Call temps either. Custom weapons and exclusive costume pieces could be offered. Off the top of my head: is there a Wrestler's Championship Belt or Luchadore Mask costume option already in the game?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not quite sure about the quoted part. Not everyone dislikes PVP solely because of CoX's PVP shortcomings but more of personal preference or bias against the playstyle.

Adding PVE usable rewards that can only be acquired by actual PVP matches might garner similar complaints that we get now with the current PVE usable rewards, even though getting those only require entering the zone and not fighting anyone. Either that or we'll see more of what you call "cheating" by taking falls just for the rewards.

PVP flagging would solve the complaints for the current rewards in those zones, but your merit system may create new ones.

Of course i can only be certain of my own actions and even with your suggestions, i'm anticipating i would use the PVP mode off flag to get the rewards i currently avoid and think about dual-boxing cheats for the merit rewards.
  8. Add another vote for base NPCs.

Customizable would be nice but would settle for citizen NPCs that walk around, wave at you and spout random text.

Also be able to specify which citizen NPC. You know, those npc with certain first letter in their name that when clicked, tells you the game time, server time, logged time etc.

EDIT: In the same vein, i think the street vehicles in-game are also considered NPCs so maybe have those available as well. If only just non-moving decorative vehicles would still be good.
  9. Maybe things have changed but i do remember EQ2 character pics are not automatically displayed. You had to go and manually upload a pic for each character profile. I don't remember all the privacy settings you can check off but there were a lot of them and they were managed on the website not the game client. Still not sure why NCSoft is doing it that way...seems inefficient and awkward from a user perspective.

I haven't had an EQ2 account in a long time so memory is very hazy. Maybe someone who's currently playing EQ2 could chime in.
  10. So from the NCSoft Q&A all character names, server location and costumes are displayed via the vault regardless of the in-game settings?

    [ QUOTE ]
. As noted back on the 20th of November, "you will have the option of hiding your Statistics, Powers, Badges, and Friends list from inclusion on the public web page." You'll have to live with knowing your character's name, image, level, server, archetype, and origin are searchable via the Vault

    [/ QUOTE ]
  11. <QR>

Just in case i missed a dev post or interview in the last week, was there a good explanation as to why these settings are managed on the game client, aside from the options already being there, instead of in the upcoming webpage?

If they just make it so you have to log in using your account credentials, like you do when using the character copy tool, then by default you can only see your own characters on that account. From there you can individually flag each character to "public" that you want to show off.

So by default everyone will still be using the new feature but remain private until they choose to change it.

If this new website turns out to be CoX's version of myspace then i definitely only want it to list characters that are active with spruced up bios/pics or whatever. If every character is public by default then there's going to a ton of bios listed with "aaaaaaaqqqqqq" and such...you know you've seen those.
  12. Setting those options for each alt is an added chore that we didn't have before but it's fine since we got advance warning.

However, if something useful does come out of this such as others have mentioned of a web page players can use to look up their own characters for a convenient single point of reference, i'm afraid the binary nature of those settings seems discrimatory to the privacy conscious. If someone wants their privacy yet still wants a web page reference only for their own characters, then they seem out of luck or depend on third party sites/software.

Any way to add options like: Show <setting> - Disabled, Private (viewable by player owner only), Public (viewable by all)

Perhaps default setting to Private then would be fine to all. Everyone will still be using the new feature by default while still remaining, at first, private.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
To those worried about RMT.. well people have their character data in their signatures already right? They have characters on SG websites, tracking websites, and a bunch of other places... how will this option change anything?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I won't speculate whether it will make the spammers task easier by having something like this to gather names instead of taking time to log into every server and wait.

However to address what i quoted, for my case it would be a change since i don't make use of any of what you mentioned. The only way to get my alt names is to catch me online or if someone happens to put them on their friend list with or without my knowledge.

And a side note, i never make any alt names that remotely resemble my forum name although others have.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
As has been mentioned, they already have everyone's names, for the most part.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm thinking that's a bit of an exaggeration. I know for me, the RMT spammers reguarly hit 2 of my alts on one server and the other 22 never get any spam.

So might be safe to say they do not have every alt's names.
  15. Just wondering for the privacy conscious, even if this system doesn't publish their character names, if someone else has their name on a friend list for positive or negative reasons, their names could still be made public without their consent?
  16. [ QUOTE ]
Cool I guess, but look at the competition! EVE is good, the rest... not so much.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well it said the list is based on user feedback. Not sure if the whole list was user based or just the ranking.

So he was the gynecologist at the birth of CoH. Great stuff. But the game's grown and moved on. Time for a pediatrician, don't need a gynecologist any more.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Thanks LightSide, now i have a mental image of a GvE box with legs spread out on an exam table and Statesman's helmet tinkering under the hospital gown.
  18. [ QUOTE ]
All of those really big pie in the sky ideas that we've dreamed about for so long and couldn't do because there was no one who could implement them...that's all back on the table.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hehe, is it wrong for me to look at that quote and think weather effects coming to Paragon? Maybe buildings you actually walk into instead of resembling fake sets from a Hollywood backlot.
  19. <QR>

So they mentioned the new NCSoft NorCal Studio will be supporting City of franchise.

    What does "supporting" entail?

EDIT: Nevermind, think it's answered above.

    [ QUOTE ]
    But what's the secret?

...learn one of the darkest secrets of Paragon City...

    The intrigue begins!

    [/ QUOTE ]

The secret is that Paragon City is not really real.

It's all just a complex computer program. And we're trapped within it.

    The server has you.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I thought the secret was that the warwalls are actually rikti forcefields they used to slice off sections of the earth for study.

Paragon is actually inside a rikti worldship right now!

Why else do you think the lakes and oceans are only neck deep?

4 new costume sets for I10. Nice.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So how many of those are invented from the RCS only recipes?

Dare I ask, are drop rates doubled along with XP and Inf?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Seconded. Double drop rates!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hehe, i've long outgrown the need to level quickly so not really looking forward to the XP part of that double weekend if the drop rates remain the same.

But it does sound like a good opportunity for 50s to farm prestige/inf which is probably hurting on everyone after I9.
  23. When i first started with this game, for the life of me, i could not stop myself from logging in to play. But since then with every passing month, i'm finding it easier and easier to do something else of interest. I was hoping I9 would change this trend in my online behavior but it has not. Mind you, i'm still playing the game, but my interest level wasn't significantly raised by I9.

Think it's down to "it's not you, it's me" thing. I9 from a design perspective is vast and "does" add to the game for its intended target audience, but apparently i'm not part of that group. Aside from the QoL additions like the KR store and tram stops, the only aspect of I9 i dabble in are common IOs and only if i get the required drops from my regular play. STF and the new hami are nice but i was never really into TFs or hami to start with. I try them out a few times because it's new then i go back to my main interest which is altism to fuel my base-building mini-game , though lack of character slots is impeding that somewhat.

The costume additions are very nice and graphically well done but i'm not too crazy about the method to acquire them. Inventions in general is a nice addition but to delve into inventions practically requires going into the player-based economy mini-game and i have never liked those in every MMO i ever played including this one.

I do think I9 has added to the game for its target audience, but it hasn't added that much for my side of the game. If this was just a small step towards something more interesting then hooray and bring on I10, if not, then that raises some eyebrows i think.
  24. Well if growth included both growing larger (+resist +damage -recharge -defense) and the reverse, shrinking (+defense +recharge -resistance -damage), that might add an interesting new tactic. And the shrinking part would help in caves.

As has been said, without telling us what the heck you're imagining when you say Density or Vibration or Psionic Weaponry we have no way of voting for what COULD be much cooler sets than Shields or Ball an Chain or whatever that sounded like something we can see in our heads.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I can see why that is a problem, though i could imagine a couple reasons why they didn't supply more power details.

    1) They didn't have any. They just wanted a generic direction on where to direct their brainstorming sessions.

    or

    2) Specifying details would "imply" that those sets are ready to be programmed and the playerbase will be expecting them. We all know how even the smallest information can snowball in the forums.

But i get what you're saying that we really didn't know what we were voting on. When i voted, i viewed the choices like this:

O Street Fighting (ss/dark/energy melee without flashy graphics?)
O Electric Hammer (stone melee with a different hammer?)
O Energy Blade (broadsword melee with a light saber?)
    O Psionic Weaponry (um....???)
O Dual Blades (claw melee with katanas?)
O Ball and Chain * (ok that's different)
O Shield Fighting * (ok that's very different)

    O Density Control (resistance set)
    O Force Field (defense set)
O Willpower (what the heck set...resistance/regen??)
    O Vibration (see above set)
O Growth * (resistance set but different enough to be interesting)
O Shield Defense * (defense set but different enough to be interesting)
