Quote:yeah it would be hard to get a total number of people but in reality unless he stay on all day and night and count every two seconds then it will be hard even if he count every second there are always people coming and going and goign and coming. But I dotn think his data is all bad nor snapshot methos is unheard of. every poll thye tout as "majority of the people polled approve of this." usually involve a few thousand that they pass off as to represent the whole population of america. And of course there are variables with region and etc. I think the only way to get cold hard data of actual population is from the devs themselves and I dont see that happening anytime soon. They know what the population is. And know where subscribers are.The problem with your analysis here, is that you're only looking at a snapshot of a moment in time. There might be 5000 people online right this second. That doesn't mean only those 5000 subscribers logged on today. What about the ones that logged on this morning and played for a couple hours? What the ones that logged on after you did your count?
I would bet there are more players that only log on for an hour or two than the hardcore ones that are logged on for hours and hours. My WAG would be that however many players are logged on at any one moment in time, that the number of actual players who logged on that day is at least double that amount.
After thinking about it for a few days, I came up with a question of what kind of image would server merging portray? It might portray a dying game even if that aint the case. Or a game that is on it's last leg. And if they have more games in the pipeline, from a buisness standpoint they dont need that.
Would be interesting if they posted that data one day. I mean many other MMORP have posted data.
oh just found an article from 2004. Says that COh has reached 180,000 active subscribers since three month after launch. At that time they predicted it would continue to grow. BUT they never said for how long. So maybe it eventually did hit over the 200k mark but really do anyone think there are 180,000 or over or anywhere near that many today? Mind you WoW was first founded in 1994 and in is said to continue to grow, with 11 million active subs in 2008 and about that many now or about 64-66% of the world MMORPG players. If there is 180,000 or such active subs. then that's a lot of people, according to Bill's data, that is not playing at any given time or not even 1% of that number. So I would assume there are enough subs to keep things going and in the end whether or not a player plays or not the devs team gets the money. But less than 1% regular logging on is hard to believe to me.
Update 2. official reports accoring to the financial reports released by NCSoft in 2008 subscribers was 124,939. Wow! that was not that long ago considering. And that's a lot of people. So from 2004 to 2008 about 40,000 peopl walked. and if ya assume the same decline in 4 years that would put the population at about 100,000. but that is just assumption. I'll see if I can find more recent like 2009 or if I'm lucky 2010 -
Well I have a SR toon and it's straight. Most of the time the mob is whiffing but when you get hit you feel it a bit more than say an invul who get hit more often but can absorb more of the hits or a regen who can regain hp faster.
For the most part though even a SO SR can survive easily in most situations and an IO one can survive a bit more but all just about irrelevant if you come across a mob that has super extra hit or one that chop away at your defense. Well in a way every build have some sort of kryptonite one way or another and just so happens that the one for SR is ones with very buffed up acc.
Some people use SR in conjuction with dark melee or one of the two blades with parry or the likes. I dont see much SR anymore though.
Call of the sandman is not exspensive so it's one of those sets you can try out and if no work well get rid of. -
In the mind everyone is always right and everyone else is always wrong. Their logic is unquestionable while everyone else is illlogical. They are the beacon of intelligence while the rest of the planet is idiots besides the people that share their logic or for a few share logic they can understand. If they cant understand it it must be wrong for they are right. Human nature.

Quote:interesting. you gotta data* that basically says that at that time, victory total population is less than half the population for red side? Well if this all taken at the same time, wouldnt the relative population by definition grow through out server? Meaning if you did go ay peak time, wouldnt freedom and and virtue grow in population logged in as well as the "low pop" servers or is it that only "low Pop" server people are the only one that do beta take vacations, take breaks stay hidden etc.Just for giggles:
1am CST
Virtue Red: 315
Virtue Blue: 518
833
Pinnacle Red: 45
Pinnacle Blue: 77
122
Victory Red: 32
Victory Blue: 92
124
11 servers total
Being nice, we'll average those three and multiple that by eleven for 3960 users found ignoring the hidden. Knowing that Freedom and Virtue are really the only high pop servers, it would probably be closer to (2*833)+(9*125) = 2791 users found ignoring the hidden.
But it's late. People are in beta. People are on test. People are waiting for GR go live.
While it's certainly possible that the vast majority of us stay hidden from searches, I do, I find it difficult to believe. But let's go with a generous assumption that 25% of the playerbase is hidden an we'll go with the big number of 4000 across all servers, hell let's bump that all that way to 5500 players logged in.
Out of 120000 subscribers at last count? Only 4.5% (and again, those are VERY generous estimates) of the subscriber base is logged in on a Friday night?
I'd be concerned if I was in charge. But I don't have the subscriber numbers. I don't know the percentage of hidden players. Hell, I didn't even get the exact numbers for every server.
About one month after GR go live, we should check again. During primetime. Tallying up all the servers. Maybe we'll be closer to 10% of subscribed players actually playing the game.
*note: available data that may or may not be complete per say. -
oh, then. Well hey, the forum is full of good info. But when you find a good charcter make haste as a good one today might be bottom of the barrel tomorrow.

Quote:The usual (and correct) points about hide options, the game being largely instanced, the summer/pre-GR slump, etc have already been made, so I'm not going to rehash all that. It's been said, the copy/paste has been done, fine.
Yes, population is lower now than it once was. There are many reasons for this, including time of year, the fact that a beta is currently in progress, the fact that a major new issue/expansion is upcoming, and just that this is a six-year-old MMO that doesn't currently have a major shelf presene (though this will change with GR). So yeah, population is lower.
This is not, in and of itself, a cause for concern. It is not a reason to merge servers. In fact, merging servers is quite likely to drive significant numbers of longtime players away from the game as this thread has already demonstrated (albeit in an anecdotal sampling).
The only issue raised in this thread that I can see as a legitimate cause for concern is one of new player perception. Servers other than Freedom & Virtue are not 'ghost towns' despite what some fond of hyperbole choose to believe, but to a new player unfamiliar with global channels, tells and our less-than-stellar team search system, that perception is an understandable one.
To recap: it's the perception that is the problem, not the reality. However, it's still a problem. On the one hand we have players on these supposedly dead servers who team quite nicely thank you very much. I'm one of them. So what's the difference? In most cases it's use of global channels and/or savvy use of the team /search and /tell systems. These aren't things that it is reasonable to expect a new player to know about and may not be reasonable to expect a new player to learn. In short, they shouldn't have to learn it in order to team well.
So what's the solution? Move to Freedom, where the blind invites flow like water? No, obviously not, because we have that option now and it does nothing to address concerns on other servers, not to mention that "lol u picked wrong server n00b rofl" isn't the message we want to send. So merge the servers, so the blind invites flow like blood? Also no, that could easily create more problems than it solves, and there's a better solution with none of the fallout. The solution is to fix the teaming interface so that new players (and not-so-new players) can find teams more easily without the need for the extraneous measures most of us now take for granted. We need a "team looking for more" option. The aforementioned "auto-add" feature where your character automatically links up with a team that has a matching "looking for more" set up would be even better.
Such a system would solve the problem of a new player's 'ghost town" erroneous perception without the numerous problems of a server merge (one of which happens to be sending a signal to those same new players that the game may be dying*).
* No, the game is not dying.
Well I dont think I can say anything else on this subject as this sums it up as nice as it can be summed up.
The game will never die as long as we keep playing. Anyone planning a mass leaving since the l33t left anytime soon. I like this game. Actually anyone miss em? the game goes on.
For real this adds new perspective. An old player, more than likely will be able to find a team on whichever server regardless how empty it seems because more than likely they have a nice network, know where to look and how to look. Even between virtue and freedom, there are different methods for finding a team effectively. Freedom all I have to do is log in and wait. Virtue, usually I have to change my status and maybe send out a message that I'm looking for team and I'll get one. Victory might take a bit longer and learned not to be in a rush and if I didnt know some of the server VIPs finding a team might be even harder as many people there dont do PuG. Liberty, when I was there, kept more an eye on the request channel and foudn teams. Champion sometimes I might get blind sometimes I just say looking for team but seem to come lot quiker if I make sure my status is green.
But someone first coming into the game who dont know what server is what might find somewhere like Liberty a little hard to find a team if they dont know how to look. Of course word might get to them that tells flow like water on freedom so what they do? Go to freedom of course!
Victory overall have a nice experience people there but many of them are stuffy and dont seem to want to do with anyoen outside their coalition they never heard of or SG and this can be frustrating for a new guy who of course dont know anyone. About as fristrating as tryign to finance a car and the dealrer saying that they cant finance you because you never financed a car here. -
[QUOTE=Forbin_Project;3037377]Just a polite reminder, The main reason we don't see servers getting greyed out as often is because the devs have upgraded the servers to handle more people more efficiently.
I know and think if they didnt upgrade servers virtue and freedom would still be contantly greyed out. -
I wsh the devs would put up population numbers or averages and then it will end it all. But that would be much work on them on top of what they already have. it would be nice but at the same time I rather they keep focus on the more "important" stuff and get to it when they get to it. only if it was a way to see raw data of actual population of the srvers at anygiven time.
-
always thought pinnacle to be decently populated on average.
-
Victory and most servers used to be a bunch of lively servers. In fact I remember it used to be as lively as Virute is now. Back in the day when Freedom stayed grayed out. I still think you're right about this game will be around a long time, assuming that the most populated servers dont go "empty". I dont think the total population of game have decreased to a panic point but I think it's more like a population shift. When's the next free transfer thingy gonna happen?
-
good changes. very good.
-
you can pvp with just about anythign now and days.
Spine/dark full purp probably means you dont have heavy end using issues anymore. Go for it and see. you already spent billions worth so go for it. -
never ever seen victory in third place in ages. I've seen at the top of the list (under the last accesses server), Hell I even seen it towards the middle but never in third or fourth from the bottom.
Compared to freedom and virtue, hell yeah victory feels empty. Even though it's a common running joke that victory is so empty that you might run into one other person, there is usually enough people, blue side, to form a team. Villian side might be hit or miss as many villians on that server seem to prefer to solo or it's more apparent since they are less of them. But with a lower population, there of course is a greater chance of not finding a team and every 8 man team on victory means more people that are left out of an 8 man team. On virtue and freedom, it's nothing to find hordes of 8 man teams, with a MS raid, LGTF a STF an ITF and you still can find plenty ofopen teams that are nearly full. On victory, get a couple of TFs going and that is less of a pool of people to team who a) might be afk b) might not want to team c) might not want to team because of level difference (not that it matters "much" but people are like that). or d) are looking for a team too that is bigger than 3. There is always an excuse for the low population of the low pop servers. One day "oh it's everyone is in beta. "oh, everyoen is on test." "oh it's a weekday." "oh it's a weekend." "oh it's a holiday" "Oh it'a not a holiday." all said on one server. Over a course of time I heard all of those and more on a "particular" server. Hell I guess the pop will be up when hell freezes over and flying pigs win the super bowl while wearing "Hail Butter!" tan tops while ice skating into heaven to pull God's beard. Wake me up when that happens.
Victory is third from top under protector and under my current server (at the top). "Man, Victory is sure is the second coming of New York city. Soooooooo many people." -
wow. Post of the year material.
Can I get a second on that motion? -
nothing important really this time.
-
nah, maybe rushed. as I tend to do many things at once. Like most of the time here I'm on the phone, playing ches, playing COH and searching wikipedia all in a cycle so here I dont worry about too much about grammar and all that other nonsense. DO that 8 hours a day anyways and have no desire to try to do it here too where I'm not even paid for it.
-
who is getting angry? I'm not angry at all. No point in getting angry here.
Like I said it's just all words on a screen. The reader adds everything else (i.e emotions that are usually not there to begin with.) -
how do I sound like a dude over a forum that makes no sound? All this is nothing but an arrangement of words on a screen in a particular order to get a particular point across.
Everything else is added by the reader. -
Hm, first of all you should not use words you dont know the meaning of, such as brain. That word is a bit too advanced for you right now.
And second of all who the [censored] ever said I was a he, numbnut? What? are you trying to suggest that only males play games? Hm, try to get your own chain of thought into current times before you challenge someone elses. Well I guess with your chain of thought is that anyoen who disagree with you or challenges your answer that is illogical to begin with must be stupid. Sounds kind of childish. Cant win them on a intel level so you resort to childish behavior that fit for a two year old. Oh well, I guess everyone cant be the same. Someone have to be the knuckle draggers.
Plus there is no word limits. If my posts are too long, no one is forcing you to read them at all. I'm going to say what I want to say when I want to say it and how long I feel like saying it. If you read it, I dotn care. If not i dont care. But if I feel like writing 20 pages, I will and what the hell you goign to do about it? Read it like you are doing anyways even though you said you will stop? Is it that compelling or you cant even control your own brain, slave. -
no feelings here.
yet some people are a bit sensitive.
no matter. -
all quiet on the Western front.
