Interesting, indeed.
I'm a little confused about the point your friend made about the origin story. I'm not sure what was unclear about it in the original Conan.
In my opinion, there are a number of factors that put the original far apart from the new one, but the biggest thing I found is that the original grabbed you on a deeper level to be involved within the movie and story.
The new movie, to me, was like watching a music video (although, without entertaining music). A lot of "Cool" images flashing across the screen and not much else going on.
The two major factors that I think makes that happen in the original are:
- The way Conan's origin is displayed - the talk with his father about steel, the village being slaughtered, the death of his parents by the hands of the cold enemies and the montage of Conan pushing that wheel around and around over the passage of time.
- And the (sometimes crude) philosophy that is a constant throughout the film. From the beginning quote from Nietzsche (if I recall correctly) and through much of the narration and dialog throughout the entire film, there is a deeper connection between the character's world and the audience through the words than most action movies have. In that way, it is much more like a good martial arts movie than just an action movie.
Quote:Honestly, I thought that the music for the new film was extremely cringe-worthy.Another thing we noticed was the music.
Neither of us could remember any of the music from the Modern Conan after we'd finished watching it but the themes of the 1981 version were far more memorable.
It was clean, very typical/cheesy shallow hollywood fantasy/adventure film score... As opposed to matching the grittiness that the art design was likely looking for. Very disappointing, hehe.
All just my opinions, of course! -
You pretty much nailed my ONE thing in the OP: Goto/Stay Aggressive and/or Defensive.
If I tell you to stay there... stay there!(I could see some AI elements countering that, but they should be infrequent if at all)
Although...
I'm debating whether I would choose that or some degree of Pet customization...
Even just colors... Of course, a number of NPC models with colorization options would also be nice.
Tough call for me between those two... -
Aww, you will be greatly missed, Avatea!
My wife and I enjoyed meeting you in New York! And having you on the community team has been (well, not to put it too much on the nose) SUPER!
I was really looking forward to running into each other at another meet and greet some time. Hopefully we'll all run into each other somewhere around the world again!
Your next adventure truly does sound like a fun one, so best of luck and do please keep in touch!! -
Edit: I didn't notice that this was in the Scrappers Forum. The below reply is entirely about Elec/Elec Blasters! Hope that's what you meant!
Oh, Elec/Elec is fantabulous!
Now, I'm not strictly a blapper, so I'm not sure if that is your intention. I feel like abandoning any one aspect of an Elec/Elec (or any blaster, for that matter) is doing yourself a disservice...
Of course, your regular ranged attacks can be used in up close melee too.
First off... a direct answer to your question on what else do you do to survive besides killing your enemies quickly is... You kill them quicker! Hehe, but also, pop GREENS and PURPLES as needed (greens are my very special personal friend).
As an Elec/Elec specifically, there are other great things for blapping (at various levels).
Eventually, you can remove all the endurance from your enemies with Power Sink and Short Circuit. Then wipe them out by zapping and bapping them.
Using the holds is a major boon to survival. Tesla Cage comes pretty early and is great. The best is when we get the second hold (Shocking Grasp) and then we can lock down a Boss with the two holds, siphon everyone's endurance and beat them all up with our punches, Ball Of Lightning and whatever else we feel like using.
So, I see Elec/Elec as the great Blaptroller! Some may call what I do blapping, since I do most of it in the middle of all of my enemies. I just see it as playing an Elec/Elec!
Once you get high enough for Epics, Shocking Bolt is fantastic as you have three holds to lock things down (it's nice to have a backup in case one of the first two miss against a tough Boss opponent and/or multiple enemies you want to lock down before pummeling them).
Positioning can be key. Hopping in and out of the fray is important. You have to remember that you ARE a blaster, so there are times you'll need to back off and avoid some of the melee attacks/damage, then either wait around a corner and let them come to you or charge back in to dish some more damage to them. Again, the holds and the endurance drains are wonderful saviors for survival when dishing it out isn't doing it quickly enough... AND some well timed Green Inspirations will extend your health just long enough to win the battle. Popping three or four purple defense inspirations will also make most of your enemies miss you for the duration. I don't tend to do that unless it is very special circmstances, but I'm a bit weird!
Here's a big thing that some players may not be comfortable:
It is okay to not have FULL HEALTH! Learn to love the battles that end with you having a sliver of red Health when the last of your enemies drops!
That is one of the great thrills for me. Time your green inspiration use well and don't panic! Blapping isn't for the faint of heart!(this mindset also makes Tanks an absolute breeze, hehe)
If you are teaming and the aggro management is going well (tanks and/or controllers locking things down) then it is pretty simple to just pile on the damage (Lightning Field helps too... and Voltaic Sentinel is also some more damage for you).
I tend to enjoy soloing with this character, so it's a little trickier.
I do all of this without any IO sets for extra defense or anything. All just standard IOs and using my noggin and the powers the makers gave me!
I hope some of what I said may have been a bit helpful (I'm not much of a numbers guy and just sort of wing things most of the time, so I don't tend to offer strategy help!) and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! -
I definitely would like to see masks that are not just painted on. Hopefully a number of styles - from domino masks to Batman-like masks (Ruin, Demise) and many of the current styles we have as painted-on ones currently.
There is something more that'd be very welcome with these mask options... two color options (trims and/or different pattern options).
At the very least, some of these types of masks could have two color options (to be either filled with the same color or two different colors of our choosing).
Another major thing I have wanted is eye-coverings/lenses! We have the Sonic detail option from the Martial Arts pack... They could give us some more standard mask lenses (Spider-Man).
A few different shapes and sizes would be great.
Another set of options that could really use some additions is the Full Mask Detail 1 options.
The fins and flares and such. There's always room for some new designs. -
Quote:Haha, it is silly... but that is a great punchline!Wish I could remember where I heard this lovely tale:
A language professor at a prominent university was explaining to the students about double-negatives. In many languages a double-negative is a positive. There are some languages (I forget which) where a double-negative is still a negative. Likewise, a positive-negative is usually a negative.
"But," he concludes, "no language on Earth has any example where a double-positive is a negative."
And a voice in the room pipes up:
"Yeah, right." -

Quote:I understand where you're coming from, but that is running with the opinion that your example statement with the word "figuratively" does not create that effect. That's an opinion I don't agree with.I agree to an extent, although I think "literally" is often not directly interchangeable with "figuratively." A statement like "I've figuratively been to hell and back today" has a different tone. I actually can't think of a word to replace "literally" in that sentence that indicates that the speaker is aware that the statement is technically false but so extreme as to be almost true.
The statement "I've been to hell and back today" is already extreme and also clearly false. Add in figuratively and you're just qualifying it for those who may be questioning your sanity (Or someone who thinks it is possibly true).
So, I'd say... if someone feels as though "figuratively" takes away from the impact one is looking for... Just leaving it out works perfectly fine.
Just my opinion and the way that I take the meanings of those words and types of statements.
I know that you're not alone in taking it as you do, but it is clearly out of error that it started. Not that this makes it completely incorrect... as many bits of language stem from misuse and become the new rules.
As opposed to what you said about it being a correct word to express the acknowledged hyperbole (and thus requiring the word's opposite meaning to be an alternate meaning), I'd just say it is used somewhat ironically (depending on your personal definition of that, hehe).
Using "literally" is using the opposite word, wryly, to express the hyperbole to the extreme, hehe.
Really though, any statement we come up with as an example where one could use literally instead of figuratively, does not actually need such a qualifier in it.
I figuratively leapt out of my skin!
I literally leapt out of my skin!
I leapt out of my skin!
For some reason, I guess some people think hyperbole needs more hyperbole in order to make it more impressive, hehe.
P.S. In case it's not clear, I'm not taking this too seriously or anything. I just found it to be interesting enough to discuss. -
Quote:Yeah, if the powers are in the code (even if not released yet) and they have animations... and a person figures out the names of those powers...I'm still confused about 1) How a fan made this and 2) How a fan made a video that so accurately matches what the devs are actually working on that the devs showed the video as a preview of the powerset.
I suspect neither of these questions can be answered on this forum.
They could type them in via demo recording, using the proper command lines, fire up the demo record... and watch it play out!
It is impressive and required it all to be in the code already, but it is very possible.
I found it interesting that they actually used that video though, hehe... -
Quote:Ugghh... That is utterly ridiculous (literally).Yes words do change meaning over time. "Literally" literally means figuratively now.
It's not entirely surprising...
I don't think it is officially recognized openly yet, but (let's face it) the word "idiot" will soon be held as a great title of respect. -
Serious question: Has the English language been decimated?
-
Wow!
By "Little Shop Of Horrors" do you mean the original (black and white and not a musical)? (Oh, 80s/90s... c'mon... you have to see the original!)
That is a fabulous comedy!
I'm curious... have you seen The City Of Lost Children/La cité des enfants perdus?
Anyway...
I'd choose The Goonies first. Don't know why, but I'm sticking to that.
Then work in the original Friday The 13th. -
Quote:Hmm... "awful" and "artificial" relating to a house of worship...Just because "ain't" is in the dictionary doesn't mean I accept that, either.
Yes - an example is that upon completion of St. Paul's Cathedral, it was originally described as "awful" and "artificial" meaning, "full of awe" and "a creation of art". They've evolved drastically over time.

What is it that my brain wishes me to type about that... -
Quote:If we decimate the dissenters those numbers'd be 76% and 36%.
Decimate originally referred to the killing of every tenth person, a punishment used in the Roman army for mutinous legions. Today this meaning is commonly extended to include the killing of any large proportion of a group. Sixty-six percent of the Usage Panel accepts this extension in the sentence The Jewish population of Germany was decimated by the war, even though it is common knowledge that the number of Jews killed was much greater than a tenth of the original population. However, when the meaning is further extended to include large-scale destruction other than killing, as in The supply of fresh produce was decimated by the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, only 26 percent of the Panel accepts the usage. -
Quote:Good golly, yes, thank you! (I saw that video title over and over and kept assuming it wasn't it, LOL).Would that be this?

I know as a Medic in a time of war, I myself have felt the same way at times.
Every time I watch that scene, I think, "Eh, maybe this is going to be a little cheesier than I remember", but then his performance kicks my ***.
Awesome. Thank you, Mr. Morgan! -
When it comes to these things, subtlety is definitely great.
Try and keep in mind how most people don't run around screaming their own true thoughts at anyone and everyone (a mistake I think a lot of role-players and writers make).
That being said...
This isn't such a bad prejudice to play, as compared to others, because it's not a specific one that any of us have had to fight in reality (well, I mean, a lot of people hate me because I am so super, but that's different! Hardy har!).
Now, I do have one character that I role-play that is very much a jerk. And I enjoy it a lot (I have so many inspirations to draw from and he helps me let go of the frustrations that real jerks amply provide).
A few things, off the top of my head, that I try and do...
- Remember that everyone present is looking to have fun. So, I try to represent a jerk, without giving people a terrible experience. This can come from subtlety, applied humor/wit, ridiculousness and backing off (use that inner brain editor that sometimes stops you from cracking an improper joke in the wrong place, hehe). We try and stay true to our characters, but one of the great things about role-playing is the give and take and you have to keep others in mind.
- Especially with strangers - give clear OOC indications that you and your character are very different. Again, your character's prejudice is not so offensive (in as much as a prejudice can be inoffensive), so there shouldn't be too much question about it. Still, it's not so much the revealing of the actual prejudice, but the actual acts of jerkiness that should be present most of the time... And that's why a few OOC messages of goodwill can go a long way.
- Not that you want to follow every single jerk move with an OOC apology, but I do err on the side of caution. Strangers and PUGers get friendly OOC greetings before or after my jerk character may say something potentially jerky.
- Base it on each individual situation. If something particularly jerky is going on with your character, offer out an OOC acknowledgment that you know it's jerky and see if anyone has a problem and/or if you should avoid going further with it, hehe.
His biggest bias is his obnoxiousness to women. And that is a really bad prejudice to play, but I haven't run into any problems with friends and strangers alike.
I am, however super considerate and careful when dealing with others.
I wouldn't want to be known only for playing this character, but I do enjoy playing the role and he's been pretty popular with others that I play with, hehe.
Best of luck! -
Aw, man... 96, not bad at all.
So much that he did so well, but I don't know if anyone could play the drunk as hilariously as he could.
I enjoyed seeing him in that MASH reunion special that was put together a few years ago. I knew he had to be up there. He certainly still had his wit! And you could see how highly everyone there thought of him.
Can't forget his Dragnet days either!
Anyway, I just loved how he could flip from the humor to the drama so well.
I'm trying to find this little speech/soliloquy that he had on MASH that hits home every time I see it... Damn you, youtube...
Thank you, Harry Morgan!! -
Dumpleberry, I am disappointed in you...
Obviously the email was sent to Lineage II users for proofreading! -
I really enjoyed Titan Weapons on Beta and recommend it for anyone who wants to play a character that feels like they're wielding a massive weapon!
Both from a thematic standpoint and from a fun gameplay standpoint, I give this powerset an A+!
I'm glad to see the weapon pack is free! Very nice. Even if it is limited time only, it's still free right now and that's a nice move on their part, since they obviously feel they can and should earn money from it! -
I'll offer you a shred of decency and a jar of dead batteries!
