You got me rolling here:

Thanks, you two! -
We still have one!
And we may not lose it!
Something I've seen people talk about is how we're used to CoH and need to give other games time if we're going to give it a chance... and there is, of course, some truth to that. So, I'm not fully arguing that, but there is another aspect to that.
Many of us love City Of Heroes not because we got used to how it plays and works... Rather, we fell in love with it because it plays and works how we enjoy and/or would want a game to be.
I know that's true for me.
I had another mmorpg love of my life in the old SWG.
After that was destroyed by the NGE, I was a refugee and gave a CoV free trial a whirl.
It was supposed to be my first free trial of all the mmorpgs out there.
Well, a few days into playing the trial and both my wife and I decided to buy the game(s) (both CoH and CoV, at that time).
Sure, I love this community, I love the personalities and friendliness of the people at Paragon Studios (of course that does play a part in the game they made too) and I love the customization of the costumes and the powers (the multitude of available choices alone)... But I really love the actual game.
Right now, I don't know of any games that come close to having the mindset that the design of this game carried. In some ways, CoH was a downgrade from the old SWG (but, in a lot of ways it was a massive upgrade as well). Regardless, those two titles had some things in common with respect to the freedoms and choices and wide variety of personal approaches to playing those games... and I very much enjoyed the combat, movement and interactions of the actual gameplay in both games. You know... some games just feel right while you play them. Then, if they have all those awesome options on top of it and allow me to make things look the way I'd like... and allow me to play the way I'd prefer... The whole thing comes together.
Unfortunately, these were two of the last mmorpgs that kept away from the EQ/WoW model.
Not sure there are any major titles out there that have followed those paths and/or true paths of their own. At least, none that have that type of gameplay that just feels right for me.
So... here's to hoping that Paragon City remains within our reach for some time to come.
I know I'll be here through November, at the very least... and I believe I will be there afterward as well. -

Quote:Huh! That's rather interesting. Indeed, it doesn't tell us much anything, positive or negative, but it is something and something done quickly... and something they didn't need to do, really.UPDATE (Tuesday, September 18)
Hey all, good news. As I indicated in my update yesterday, I asked for an e-mail address that we could use to send messages to NCsoft without interfering with company operations. Today, I received the following: "I asked about setting up a monitored email address for players to be able to communicate with NCsoft, and one has been created at: COHSunset@ncsoft.com." (Emphasis mine.)
Now I know that some of you are thinking, "But that wont do any good!" but I'd like to point out that 1) you don't know that, and 2) they most certainly did not have to do this; I appreciate that not only did they, but they did it very quickly, which shows to me that they are listening. I honestly believe that someone will be reading these messages. Accordingly, please don't use it to grind your ax at NCsoft or e-mail bomb it. If you do, that will most certainly assure that it gets redirected to a black hole never to be read again, which would be screwing over your fellow players, not NCsoft.
I'm thinking that we might should resend our polite emails to this address?
Give them all that we've said in one place and help to make sure that our solid voices of unity and positive momentum outweighs any late-coming trollish behavior towards this new address. -
The problem with flippantly belittling dreams is that dreams are the fuel that has created everything that's ever been done.
I don't fault people for not being swept away with improbable dreams, but the ones who are flippantly negative about the dreamers' chances are just onlookers - victims and benefactors of what others do or (in some cases) don't do.
Relevance has no bearing. Size matters not.Effort and relentlessness means everything.
It doesn't really matter, but that holds true for everything. So, if the beliefs of a dreamer mean nothing, how can the negative outlook of an onlooker mean anything at all?
Encouragement and support are best right now. Failures can be dealt with after they come. People will or won't lose themselves either which way and we can all deal with things when things come to pass. -
Quote:I think all accounts are VIP on beta, but I could be wrong about that... Hrm.I wish they'd flip the VIP switch.
All my husband ever played was masterminds but his account expired and since billing is gone, he can't renew to play those masterminds either.
So much unresolved RP...
Can a non-VIP account access masterminds in beta?
And, yeah, it does suck to be stuck as a premium. So bizarre that they'd just shut it down and not even take whatever money some people probably would have thrown in to have some last goes.
Two things...
You can wait and see if anything changes within the next two weeks or so...
If there are any retail box codes that your husband (or any non-VIP) hasn't applied to their account, you can buy it (usually very cheap) and apply the code and that will upgrade the account to VIP.
Things like:
CoH/Cov:Good Vs. Evil
CoH: Mission Architect Edition
CoH: Collector Edition
CoV: Collector Edition
Going Rogue
Going Rogue: Complete Edition
I'm probably forgetting some...
If you haven't applied one of those (as you cannot repeat such a code), then they will unlock VIP if applied to the account. -
Quote:Maybe I missed something in the exchange, but you don't need to be VIP to get full access on beta now (someone managed to flip that switch for us as a nice gesture).Ah. I see. Well in that case - get your VIP status and then check it out on Beta is the only solution I know of at the present time. Sorry about that.
Just in case that wasn't clear. -
Quote:You're assuming that is possible....
If the game gets saved..and that person is now unqualified for said Set..Lock it again.
If we could just snap our fingers and make that so? Sure.
However, I doubt they have any code that would do such a thing (unlock a powerset and then lock it again because the game was saved).
They did what they could, without the potential of screwing up the game's future, if it is saved (and, yes, it is a possibility)... They opened up full beta for everyone, not just VIPs.
I totally understand the frustration and disappointment over NCSoft shutting off all ability to gain points and buy more things. It's nuts. 3 months to go, but locked in points.
We'll see though... NCSoft has said they have special plans for VIPs... so, who knows what that might be. Some points for everyone, maybe (complete guess on my part).
We'll see what happens. It's been a whirlwind over there.
Think about it. Paragon Studios was working their butts off on this great game, looking to push out I24 soon and working hard on all the things to come in future issues still... And... surprise!! You're all fired, the game's done, see ya, bye!
Then, they still managed to get Beta opened for all (and fixed the beta server, as it had a problem). They're not allowed to do any developing, so no code or anything can be worked on in order to facilitate a single new feature (no special ending or anything new).
Then they've been attempting discussions with NCSoft, which we were told were going on.
And they've all been filing their papers, getting their resumes ready and out there, and looking for employment.
It's been two weeks. Currently, we're all waiting to see if NCSoft will sell the IP and allow the game to continue... whether or not Paragon Studios can be brought back together and continue... What NCSoft's further plans are for the subscribers and whatever else they have planned.
Everyone is in the dark and no one is going to do anything extreme right now (and there's very little anyone from Paragon Studios can do, really).
Yes, it's all ridiculous and sucks, but keep a little perspective on what aspects to complain about. There's hope that the game and Paragon Studios can be saved. That takes priority over giving us powersets that we haven't tried yet on the live servers, simply because we don't want to bother playing with them on beta.
Those are just my opinions about it all anyway. -
I was thinking about a "SAVE OUR CITY" one. I had only considered simple, black text on a white background, but it could actually be done nicer too.
I also thought about "Save Paragon City" for heroes and "Save The Rogue Isles" for villains. Considered doing a little something with that, if I had the time.
Neither of those are huge, but I wouldn't mind something a little tamer than the slogan you have there (not that I disagree though!).
Regardless, nice job, great idea and thank you for extending the offer! -
Quote:Excellent, TonyV. Thank you.Hey everyone, please note the update in the top post. I have voluntarily removed the e-mail addresses. I think this project has been successful in its goal, and at this point, I don't think any further e-mails will get read. Also, I want to minimize the possibility of trolls getting the addresses at some future point and using the addresses to grind an ax.
A response (with a request and not a threatening command) is not bad at all. I completely agree with going along with their request.
Thanks again, for everything. -
Really, it all means that, when all is said and done, those of us who feel strongly about this and acted upon it will feel satisfied in knowing that we did what we could and did not simply fold.
That's not to say that failing to continue CoH will be okay, but I'll always act against what I feel I must, because I don't want to wish that I had done so later on.
The fact that the guy who's supported us for all of these years by making sure that the paragonwiki and mids and all of that was there for us... That just makes the perfect focus of our attention.
Really though, he's just another one of us and it is up to all of our efforts and not just his.
If it's just his efforts, we'll never succeed (well, unless he's got millions to independently buy and fund the game, hehe). -
It's funny, just a bit earlier, I glanced at the thread title "Where will the last place you log out from be?" or some such topic...
And I thought, "Huh, I'm not going to log out. They'll have to shut them off, because I'm going to stay in and my character will be fighting!".
So, yeah... I'm there with ya. -
Quote:Absolutely. It's not even just about making sure CoH continues on... For me, at least. People say this and that is acceptable and standard big business operating procedure and that you can't fight it, you can't beat it, and so on... Well, I don't accept it. I wish to change those standards. I'll fight it and I'll be damned if I listen to anyone tell me I can't win. There is but one Charcoal, my dear Eiko.
I'm glad to see others speaking up. I think that Captain America panel was on my mind as I wrote that post. But, it's absolutely true.
Sometimes it's as simple as standing up to make all the difference in the world. Stand up, be counted, and make sure NCSoft knows your opinion matters.
Whatever the final results for this particular case may be... I hope that we turn heads and change minds and help a better approach for these types of things for the future.
You may say that I am a dreamer... But I'm not the only one. -
I saw this thread before, but didn't get around to commenting...
Just wanted to say, nicely stated, Winterminal and thank you for contributing the positive and reasonable vibes.
I've been growing tired of a lot of the negativity around here. There' just a certain level of criticism and dissent and ongoing negativity that really is unneeded and very much unwelcome.
Anyway... let me not contribute to that element by ranting about it, haha...
Quote:Ineed! Not that anyone ever reads my posts ...
But one other data point -- Posi hasn't posted his reply to our questions about the Story of CoH. If he spills the beans on everything ...
Quote:I currently have an almost superstitious dread of Posi answering the AMA. Rationally or not it's on my list of bad omens.
(See, someone did read your post.)
Maybe I'm living in denial, but I can handle the crocodiles for a while longer.
(and I read the post too, woohoo!)
Quote:That's ok. NCSoft still has to proceed with basic shutdown procedures in case the talks do not pan out. Talks won't prolong the life of the game unless they are successful.
So they still have to put out the details of what happens with left over credit on accounts etc no matter what happens.
So, even if/when we get further information about player/customer service cessations, it doesn't really mean a single thing in regards to selling CoH and letting the project, community (and, hopefully with time and favor on our side, Paragon Studios) continue. -

And... the more important question is...
Who will save City Of Heroes? -
Right. The game wasn't dead.
All the conjecture about what did it is silly... ah, but I like silly... but not this kind of silly... this kind of silly is just silly!
The obvious answer is NCSoft.
If we're going to say that the game is being shut down because it is not popular and profitable enough, then... America killed it.
How can such a great game not be more popular and profitable?
It had to be saved by a Korean company, but the American consumer-base couldn't match their lofty expectations...
Shame on you, Americans!
More seriously though...
The real answer is...
Jerkhackers.
