  1. Sure, Arcana and Talionis,
This is what I've always believed in doing: Certainly stay well-rounded, but absolutely focus on - and continue to improve - your strengths.

Now, I don't think any of the current scenario has to due with true failures of CoH (nothing is perfect, but this game could have continued to run and earn a profit for some time to come). It's the failure of NCSoft to recognize the great thing we had here and its value. That failure just simply costs us what we loved.

Also, using World Of Warcraft as a measuring stick is the same foolishness that has doomed many companies ever since Blizzard's big success. It was a perfect storm of so many converging circumstances (including the merit of the product, so no insults implied... insults about WoW are entirely transparent and easy for me to make, so I'll not ever hide them, haha).
Chasing the numbers attached to WoW's heyday has continuously killed companies, games and communities within the mmmorpg universe and for players to do the same is a bit looney (which means - fully expected! So, carry on!).

Any product (at any time, under any theme) may be an enormous winner. That really doesn't change the realities of a genre being niche. And that fact can still play a negative (and positive) role if other factors don't provide the best of circumstances.

This game's popularity sure could have been bigger. Then again, it could have been smaller.

Whether or not the niche aspect of this game is due to the genre or other factors is mostly irrelevant. The game (and us fans of it) were certainly a niche group. And we are a niche group that NCSoft no longer cares about.

The real kicker for this game's population lies within the first few years of launch.
I came her after that period and this game was truly marvelous. However, large enough amounts of customers may not come to three-to-seven-year old games. That was always the problem with trying to bring in new people now. We know it's a great game. And new people can discover that... but how many new customers, ready to spend money and get invested in a new ongoing game, choose the one that came out 8 years ago?
    It's just a natural handicap.
When a game is good enough to become the greatest it has ever been at the 8 year mark, people want to hold that as a negative attribute.
    Alas, this is humanity.
Show me a sane human and I will show you an ape that believes the hype.
  2. Beautiful setup, Red Valkyrja!

I'm happy with what I'm using now, but, yeah, the main thing I needed was for the window to lead to the outside. One of those, fly up to the window and visit sort of things that just can't be altered, due to the feel of that type of visit (in my opinion).

Regardless, I love that bed setup, especially.

You remind me how much I'd love to visit people's bases though...
  3. Very interesting!

I really like the mindset behind this game and where the designer says he's coming from regarding it (both in philosophy and in my interests).

I hadn't heard of this, so thank you. I will definitely be keeping an eye on it, at the very least.

There's just one aspect that would make a huge difference for me and I imagine that it falls outside of their focus and would be too much of a drain of resources compared to the virtual benefit it would provide (for me)... personal character (and ship) customization.
It's just a huge, nonstarter aspect of any and all games for me. And this was not born from my playing of CoH (it's really why I gave CoH a try). I've been of this mindset since before most any games offered character customization... and then, once I got the taste of what could be done (years ago), I just can't go back, hehe (seriously).

So, I am not bashing this game if it ends up not offering a lot of character customization. It's just a matter of fact that it'd majorly thwart me being a part of it.
So, I'm curious to see what happens along those lines, because it might offer such things (in spades, even). The video about immersion was nice and all and I agree 100%. For me though, having the same body shape, outfits, colors, just a selection of faces would kill all the other tremendous aspects of immersion that they are putting into the game. And, again, they very well may let players go nuts with it... we'll see (have you seen any word on that?)!
I'm also curious about nonhumans and aliens and such. I prefer my space fare with aliens and things, but if it is maybe a scenario of first discoveries, I could maybe enjoy only being human.
I'm just curious about those aspects.

Regardless, it seems to be a great project and I'm highly intrigued by it.

    Haha, you will crash, indeed!

Great job so far everyone and to everyone pitching in and doing this!

I had realized that one of the demo edit videos I planned on making could make a great little endorsement of this event. And I was hoping to put it together and finish it in time... but it is looking like I realized all of this in just too short an amount of time to pull off (in combination with how busy I am otherwise).

That's okay though, I don't think my video really would have helped! Just a way to give a little more. Anyway... really just wanted to bring attention to this some more and say thanks to everyone involved!
  5. Thank you, DR/Sam/Michelle...

    *sigh*
    That disconnect countdown got me.

I have to say though, that the Longbow liftoff scene was awesome and made me laugh.

Thank you for sharing this - your work and your feelings.

Thanks! (Sorry, I've been preoccupied and not been by the forums for a few days...)
This was actually more for a private hospital room, where the patient recovers, etc. that has a window to the outside.
I think I've managed to overcome the lack of such a location by good old fashion movie magic of just using a different wall with a window whenever I want to show that one wall of the room. Editing brings worlds together, hehe.

By the way, the Vaz medical stuff, unfortunately, is too dark/thematic, as I was looking for regular medical equipment (not the scary, rusty variety).

All good though. The camera angles make what I've got work... Now if I can just figure out some other problems I'm having, hehehe... (seriously, I have no time for this right now, but the closure is making me really want to finish a few of these videos I have screaming in my head).

    Thanks again anyway!
  7. What is in a name? That which we call any of our City Of Hero Servers by any other name would be as sweet.
  8. Positivity is correct.

The same measures that regular development teams take.
It's the same process, the same mentality and the same degree of smarts and adaptability.
They put measures in place preemptively and they react and respond to anything that may come up in testing phases and, usually, they're good to go.
However, exploits happen on live servers and developers implement fixes.
It's a fact of life and it doesn't prevent an emulator from being great any more than it does for anything else.

You're talking about complicated systems that educated/skilled and talented people are working with. It's not just some guys following a youtube tutorial on how to emulate a game... they have the know how and take pride in the work that they put in to provide that emulator for the community.
  9. You guys are amazing.
I meant to comment and thank you before, but I've been very busy with some complicated work (unrelated to CoH) and I wanted to wait for a moment when my brain power wasn't being used up quite so much before I tackled these scripts.
Coding and these sorts of scripts are pretty foreign to me, so I am completely amazed with them. They're one of the closest things to magic for me right now, haha (you digital wizards, you!).

They look simple enough for me to grasp and follow, but we'll see...
I'm finally going to tackle this Sunday (or tonight if I catch another wind).
If I do get stuck, I may start pounding and screaming for help like Inigo Montoya calling for Fezzik to break down the door!

I don't think I'll have any such problems though... we'll see!

    Thanks so much!

Oh and an update for you from this morning:
Haha, project Z is not a CoH emulator.

And the idea that every emulator becomes a hacked ruin due to player control is laughable.

The people capable of making and maintaining emulators (especially the ones I know of within this community) generally have far more intelligence and common sense (and a respect for the game) than that.
Haha, but you stick to your beliefs, please.

Usually, you'll have an emulator that recreates and doesn't alter. Then, from there (once that is functional, smooth and running), other alternate servers may come to be with variations (certainly not always, it just depends on whether people with the know-how - and the desire to put that sort of work in - have the desire to make such alterations to the emulated game).
Many communities reject additions and alterations, especially if they differ greatly from what once was and/or was likely to be under the original system.

The only playerbase I ever saw with 'windows' was someone's orbital space station room where they did a PHENOMENAL job of making it look like windows out into space, with small, medium, and large lights as the stars. Really fantastic job.

    Although...

You MIGHT be able to cheat by demoediting... I'm not sure if there's a hospital bed/stretcher/thing that's available as an object (this might work - V_OO_Vahzilok_Operating_Table), but if you could map that in, then you could maybe use Studio B in the AE building of your choice, put the bed there, put a medical station (which DOES exist as an object in as well - V_OO_Medical_Cabinet_01), and put said character on the stretcher.

Yes, I was coming up with some ways to cheat it, just in case, but I knowing those object models could be enormously helpful! Thank you! I never ever think of being able to do that with demo editing!! (and have no idea which objects can or can't be done)

But yes, I was checking out the AE building as well as the Atlas Park Atrium and a few other locations. Didn't think of Marchand's Office map (love that one) and the Loyalists' Office. I'll have a looksee. With the right camera angles, I might be able to fake it. Not sure which direction I'll go with yet.

I've been in a few bases that took a very large room and made it like an outside area and then built buildings (with windows) all around and among it.
Unfortunately, the one I have access to isn't the right fit, but I am sure I can whip one up for my purposes pretty quickly. Just wanted ot make sure there wasn't something that already existed in the game world (which might have better art assets than what I could do with the base, really).

Sidenote... I need to throw a party, redside, in my Rogue Universe casino hotel some time soon.

Thanks for the ideas! Those objects very well might make a huge difference!
  12. Sort of an odd request/question, as I'm putting a bit of time into a CoH video:
I'm looking for a hospital room (where an injured patient would be staying) that has a window. None of the hospitals seem to have windows. I checked the Praetorian ones just to see)... So, I am thinking maybe a player-made base might be the best option.

Does anyone know of any such location (even if it is more of a bedroom looking place with a window, that might do better than a hospital without a window) developer or player created? Hrm, Manticore's mansion didn't have any such room with a window or anything, did it?

I may have to create it myself in the base editor, but I figured I'd ask here. By all means, if you have or know of a player-created base with something like this, let me know.

    Thanks for any help!

That's the one thing we will have regardless. Our clients will still play back demos, no internet/server connections required. Same as it is right now.
  14. Absolutely.
I'd not choose an emulator over a Paragon Studios developed game, but if there's only an emulator version? Zero question.

I love playing this game. Often times, I play solo. Other times playing with my wife and good friends.

While I love both this game and the community, they've both always been somewhat separate things (which sometimes combined in various ways).
Plus, it's entirely possible that a great community could take form around an emulated CoH. I'm not counting on that, but it is certainly possible.

I very much relate to this and feel the same.

    Hahaha, exactly.
Sounds like the kind of shot that was really making me think I'd love to have something to help me out with this!
  16. As someone mostly unfamiliar with using most of the advanced features in the existing demo editing programs (and having never before used scripts such as Leandro's recent releases)... I've long been meaning to ask some experienced people about this:

Are there any good tools for creating positional movement paths?

I've always just edited such things by hand, editing each line in notepad when I didn't simply capture what I wanted while recording the original demo.

If I have the starting point: POS A and the ending point POS B, are there tools out there to create the path according to the speed/rate that I desire?

Recently, I've been wondering if there is a way to take Leandro's amazing scripts (of using images to create spawn locations and spawn parameters) to create actual movement paths or any such similar means to somewhat quickly and easily create some movement paths for characters, objects or cameras (but I may be getting greedy, hehehe).

Or if there simply already exists great tools within the demo editing program to accomplish this and I just haven't realized it, could you please point me to them?
  17. Friggin' amazing, Codewalker and Leandro.
    Thanks for the improvements!

Truly impressive. I love watching special performances and that seemed to be one of them, to me. That horse moment gave me supreme chills! One of those, "No, they did not?!? Wow... how nice for them to be a part of something so well done!".
  22. There's also the Titan Network forums, brought to you by the network that has managed to provide us with Mids hero builder and the paragonwiki.
They're not going anywhere and will be working to save the game or resurrect it from the dead, if possible.

    And, yeah...
  23. As related to my earlier questions about finding current CAM POS (camera position coordinates), Leandro whipped up some more magic and posted it in this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...=1#post4411464

It's a small secondary program that will keep track of your CAM POS, so you run it while moving around in your demo playback and can find out what the POS is... then, wham, edit them into your demo. Just something that may come in handy after moving around in a demo playback. Man, I used to wish for these features...

I'm going to keep wishing for CoH's continuation. So many wishes come through with this game already, heh.

I mean... damn... you can record a demo... play it back... FREEZE it... move the camera around, find some great shot... or keep letting the demo loop around and view it from all sorts of angles... It's a demo editing/playback dream.

Also, I love the idea of a co-op zone. Honestly, while I like the Rogue Isles, I've long felt that villains should be in Paragon City too... I mean, they are all over every street corner anyway. May as well be player-controlled villains as well.

Anyway... wow. Just incredible and more stuff I would have been excited to see when they announced it. Really nice work on this zone. I especially like what looks to be a covered ramp up to the train station (even though it doesn't rain, haha!).

I so very much love the fact that they were making a zone with some very nice areas and some very shady areas. After visiting First Ward, I kept saying that I'd love to see more zones within Paragon City with that type of zone (architectural and theme) diversity.
Only thing that would have made it better is to put the train tracks across the middle to divide the two neighborhoods.
