Quote:But if people gather around and play cards for 3 or 4 hours its called fun. If they play a sport for 3 hours its called fun. Some people like to play games repeatedly for hours and have been doing it for thousands of years.
Alright everyone, lets farm Pinochle!
However, to bring that analogy more in-line with what is being said...
People wouldn't necessarily enjoy playing the exact same hand the entire 3 or 4 hours (one person might, hehe).
Of course, no analogy is perfect, but the complaint is not playing CoH for 3 or 4 hours... it is playing one tiny aspect of it repeatedly.
If the people playing CoH would be happier playing a card game without much variance, then they could do that instead of a mmorpg with 7 years of content.
(And this should not read with any negative tone. I went to put a smiley face at the end, but that seemed more fake or whatever... so... ya know... I'm just conversing with ya, nothing else!) -
Excellent and interesting replies, so far!
Quote:Not to suggest that this is a bad suggestion at all, but just in case you don't know (and so this may help you from now on), you can save your settings as "default" and then all characters made after that will start with those settings.
2. Most options have to be toggled individually for every single character you make. Really, Paragon/NCSoft? In a game that prides itself in its ability to induce altitis?
I know, it took me a while and many alts before I did this myself!!
I can't quite remember where and how this is done in the options window off hand, but I think it is pretty simple, once you find it and know to do it. -
Quote:While I don't consider them ridiculous - and I think they're certainly cool for some concepts and such - I definitely think that this power (as much as any) deserves an alternate option.I would personally love to see those ridiculous sparkles removed from Dark Armor's Murky Cloud. Or at least some alternate effects. It's difficult to take a DA toon seriously when they twinkle like a particularly depressed Twilight vampire.
As for alternate effects, how about a void vortex swirling around the character, drawing in the surrounding shadows, sucking the very life from the air like an abyssal black hole.
Something very shadowy and dark to fit the darkity dark dark types who want to stay dark! -
I still think the Boils Aura for Heads (and possibly Eyes) is much needed!
-
I was thinking about my own answers to this notion and was curious what others around here might come up with...
Things with the game, UI, etc. that may be a turn-off, problem or just seem odd (in a bad way) as a new player coming into the game...
(the following are just my opinions and none of this is aimed to be a rant of negativity... more so just some thoughts about how we might think the new player experience could be fixed up a bit in order to help make 'em happy and positive and stick around!)
So, as a new player starting things up...
- Why can't I set the resolution and graphics before starting the game? Or, at least, have the default starting resolution be the desktop setting. Instead, I have to go through MAKING a CHARACTER (possibly with crazy dumb low resolution - in which much of the shapes are distorted due to the improper aspect ratio), make all of those decisions of powers, costumes and such (with things looking so crumby and skewed)... load into the game, change my settings... and THEN quit and restart the game... JUST to get the game's settings right? This doesn't seem like a good introduction to me.
- Why oh why is the default mouse control the opposite (at least for what I'd expect)? While it is rather simple to go in and change this setting, I really am surprised at the default setting... and even the simplest of things can be a turn-off. Of course, I may be alone in thinking the default mouse setting is inverted (as opposed to what they call "inverted"). Not a huge deal, just one thing that I personally found very odd.
- I could say the lack of capes in the initial character creator seems rather odd and may likely seem even more odd to new players coming in today (so, I guess I will say it
). That could be an issue for some (obviously, the Paragon Market and Boosters may/can alleviate that, to a degree... but I don't know if that really prevents the negative response that no capes?? can cause for a new player starting things up).
None of this is doom and gloom, however, I could see some of them being obstacles in the way of new players giving the game a fair chance (As petty as it may seem, initial bumps in the road -no matter how simple to overcome- can spell the end of any hope for winning a person over).
Obviously, this game is much greater than any of these potential quirks, so I'd love to see some of the obvious things addressed to better satisfy the new players we hope will be coming!
What things might/did bother you as a new player? -
Quote:And/or unfair to those specific servers (as per your third point).A few points
- To designate Freedom, Virtue, Union or any existing server would be unfair to the other servers.
Count me as someone who definitely wants my home server (Virtue) to welcome new and old players, free, premium, re-subbing and/or bumming from their parents!! -

I suppose if Flarstux said the same thing about a Supperman movie with a brown-eyed Superman, he'd take just as much flak?

Quote:I feel very similarly about what you were saying about character and costume creation from the beginning and this is, in no way, a counter to that... This is just an In case you didn't know sort of (potentially) helpful reply......
...but the fact of the matter is at no place in the entire game could I see what my character would look like doing Claws attack with the Rularuu Claws. Since I don't know if it'll look good or not, I don't care.
"But Sam!" I can hear you saying "Aren't the Incarnate costume unlocks account-wide?" Yes, but they still don't show up at character creation, because you have to make a character, name it, claim them AND THEN visit a tailor to use them. About the only reason I stopped giving a flying rat about the Incarnate costumes stuff is just this - the claiming tech is just not good. So, yeah, I've basically chosen to leave those costume pieces alone. If I can buy them AT CREATION, swell. If I can't, then oh well.
At the time of this particular endeavor of yours, there very well may have been zero way for you to see those claws...
But the AE allows you to make costumes with those and other unlockable pieces and can be rather valuable in that sense.
Make sure to unlock any and all costume parts with your AE tickets and just go in and create a custom enemy. Load and save costume files, as per normal and such.
Anyway... I imagine that you do know this now... And I know that it doesn't really change the real matter of your post!
Just wanted to post this in case it helps you or anyone else a little!! -
I was going to do one multi-quote post, but it felt wrong with the conversations having rather different focuses...
Quote:Yep. I try and bring my head back to this idea whenever things aren't entirely appealing to me or others and whatnot.Perhaps it's simply because it's the product they choose to produce. I have seen the developers discuss the fact they consider themselves to be casual and not hardcore gamers.
Some will like it, some won't and it's financial suicide to even try and make everyone happy, IMO.
In the case of the trials, like anything else, there are simply people that don't like them. That does not make the trials, the reward structure around them, the people that like them or the players that don't like them right or wrong, sadist or masochist.
It just means the developers decide they wanted to make them and based upon the information they have, that there would be ROI in doing so.
IMO, nothing more, nothing less. No animosity toward players, just that the trials and the Incarnate system were are what they wanted to make.
As an artist myself, I always try and respect that there are people and artists that simply want to deliver what they want and what they've designed and that it is not always going to be what I want and that is okay (and, just for the record, I enjoy a lot about the trials and think they're fun. Especially when I first ran them!).
The difficult point to figure out is how much does the audience/customer-base factor in for a lot of this type of work?
I'm not raising that as a counter to what you said above... more so as just how that is the difficult line to balance upon. Sometimes you're going to go over that line, on either side, and that's fine (either intentionally or incidentally).
MMOs are interesting in this respect, I think. How much are they art to be what they want to create and how much are they closer to the side of a wedding band (so to speak)?
I don't think they're that far on the side of having to aim for what the customer wants, but they're not just free artists creating their own raw interpretations of whatever their hearts require, either.
MMOs are a little more on the side of giving the audience what they want (and, no sometimes the audience doesn't really know what they want or how much they'll enjoy what they don't even know they would).
It's an interesting aspect of these creations and I don't think the developers here have strayed too far or anything. It is a very difficult balancing act and I've seen this team sway this way and that and generally result in a lot of pleased customers, so that's a great job in my book. -
Quote:I agree. Its not that it is just one playstyle. Its a playstyle that has proven not particularly popular in the games past. Hamidon raids (Still the best reward/time in the game), mother ship raids, shadow shard tfs the long hardcore events are all things people like but only in small amounts.
I think that the developers saw this limited style of events as being epic.
And they're not entirely wrong to look at it that way... However...
I think that most of the players now see the Incarnate System pretty much akin to level 51+... new powers, new top level(s) to reach.
Few players don't intend to reach level 50 with their characters (even if they're not desperately focused on that goal and in no rush... they still intend to reach it some day and not cut them off).
When the Incarnate System first rolled around... there was a lot of talk about how you don't run all of your characters through this stuff, and so on.
However, I think this is becoming more and more of just the additional steps of our on-going level/power progression... and people are not going to want to stop at level 50 with their latest alt...
And the repetitive path that it takes to get through the Incarnate system is likely going to become more of an issue for these players.
Anyway... right or wrong, I just think this is part of some players' bad feelings about the system...
I think the design goal of Epic, limited, super-super stuff is what the Devs had in mind...
I think it gets processed by much of the playerbase as More Powers and Levels and STUFF for us to get for our characters!! Just like Epic Power Pools and such. -
Quote:I think that a big part of this is differing definitions of "casual".It doesn't take a rocket scientist to foresee that grinding trials in a casual MMO will be controversial.
And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to foresee that locking an entire progression system behind very little content would also be controversial.
So I don't know what to believe. I agree that they didn't do it out of sadism, but then why? Good faith or plain ignorance, or something else?
The Trials certainly are casual compared to other trials and raids and things of that ilk.
However, some people do not find large team to multi-team content of any sort to be definable as casual.
It's not a right or wrong sort of thing, it's just personal definitions and/or personal preference.
So, if some people consider any or all of the difficulty metrics within the trials, the amount of time they take, the amount of players required to start/to succeed to be beyond their definition of casual, it's not casual for them.
And the opposite is true and I think this is where the Developers may have overlooked (if they did overlook it), most likely through their own exuberance of the systems.
If none of those things register as being beyond another player's definition of casual, then it is casual to them.
Regardless, it is possibly a temporary situation and the types of content linked to the system may open up across more forms of content.
I'm not saying people shouldn't voice their criticisms, I'm just saying that there are some reasons why things may have gone the way they did, even if we don't like them.
Even if it is through making mistakes... we all make 'em.
I, personally, agree that tacking on the endgame system to this game as something so heavily focused on these new trials is odd and disappointing... but that's just my opinion (and anyone else's who shares it).
It takes a lot of time to make this stuff and not everything that is going to be made is going to be on my side of the fence. Hopefully things will even out eventually. -
Quote:Sam, I apologize for this slight derail ahead of time, but I have to make a comment.
I've seen this guy play, he's not kidding. Even on SOs (as I'm pretty sure that's all he puts in his characters), EK is living proof that there is more to survival than the softcap and hitpoints. Active mitigation and quick thinking can survive just about any onslaught.
Aw, thanks, mate. That means all the more coming from you. (and makes up for someone calling me stupid for dropping to Nova Fist during a Lambda, lol)
And yeah, the S.O. only thing is correct. I've kind of come to the point where I feel like changing that would be wrong for me to do... I can't give up being "living proof", haha!I must continue championing for the S.O. campaign!
(However... I will throw my SD/SS Tank in as an experiment in IO building... and I'll try and post that for you to peruse later today)
EDIT: Oh, actually... that is "Standard IOs"... not just regular Single Origins, hehe...
*ends derailment* -
Gotta admit... I feel an alt coming from this!
It's definitely been something I've been waiting for since they started proliferation.
Although, I hadn't really thought about concepts until now that I've heard it is happening... hmmm...
And... I don't care what it does or doesn't have. I'm sure I'll be happy with it, whatever they decide. I think I'll probably enjoy this powerset combo because of what they've said about it being control focused and such.
Sounds like my kind of blaptroller!! -
It's a funny question (in a good way)...
I find that I don't normally think of the ATs in this way, so much. Mainly because I've found a lot of versatility within ATs and I've never been one to pigeon-hole much anything.
First off, I am a concept creator, role-player and those are main aspects of my enjoyment. The concept and staying true to such things are most important, so we're similar in that regard, I think.
And, while I enjoy just about all ATs that I've tried so far, Blasters are my favorite (although, I'm not sure I like the standard mash'em up AoE damage glass cannon Blaster that many others seem to).
Electric-Knight - Elec/Elec/Elec Blaster (hands-down, my favorite character to play) I can see having some of what I might consider a blanket Blaster AT vibe... The confident (cocky) ace fighter pilot type... Live on the edge, blast the blazes out of the enemies, have no fear because if you pause to fear, you're likely kissing dirt. Failing is generally not an option, but the only way to ensure that is to dive in and take them out as quick as you can, because that's your best bet. Now... with these powers, however, that includes multiple single target HOLDS and multiple target Endurance Drains, so it's not all damage for him. Lots of mini-control. Then he leaps in and uses electrically charged melee attacks and anything and everything at his disposal to wipe them out before they have a chance to recover.
Most (good) fights end with E-K's health bar low... but his opponents defeated.
With a few tricks to spare, when things get too intense (kind of like Dechs mentioned above... I am similar in enjoying a character/powerset that can prevent a team wipe and/or remain standing through anything... "With a Blaster?" you say? Mhmm...) I have EMPulse to stun everyone and buy us time, more endurance draining, holds, purple and green inspirations, nuke(s) and, of course, more damage to prevent team wipes and outlast any and all encounters.
Sorry, I may have digressed there as I love talking about playing that character...
So, that's one Blaster (and my desire to live through all encounters and hopefully help the team is a desire a carry through all my characters, as a player), but another favorite Blaster of mine is The Loyal Guardian.
The character concept was clear. I needed a somewhat traditional super hero who could fly in and save the day, no matter the odds.
He's really big, super strong, comes from another planet and has very powerful cosmic powers along with his immense strength and durability.
A Tank, to me, is often a character who puts others above himself and does whatever he can to shield them by taking the brunt of attacks.
However, I couldn't get the cosmic feel that I wanted with a Tank (I wanted ranged attacks and some psychic type of abilities that extended beyond himself... and laser eye beam close to level 50 wasn't good enough).
Defenders and Controllers didn't feel right either... He needed to be in the thick of things and seem tough...
Blaster? Blasters... tough??
Mind/Energy Blaster, focused heavily on the Energy Melee attacks worked out fantastically.
He wipes out the enemies without any notice that he's got very little defense and hitpoints. And the energy melee attacks are some of the best at showing off immense strength, with all of that knockback and such.
Telekinetic Blast, some cosmic/mental powers, plus Tough, Weave and the Force Master Epic Powers (Temp. Invulnerability and Force Of Nature for the toughness and Personal Force Field plus Repulsion bomb) all add more of that ooh nifty cosmic power alien super hero guy feel that Blaster seemed to be the best suited for.
I hope that long read actually translated a bit of what you were asking... I figured you may enjoy pulling it out of all I had to say about those specific examples.
I think the game is so diverse, even within ATs, that I don't find myself thinking of ATs as set... arch types... haha, at least not conceptually so. Playing-wise... yeah, I know that, as a blaster, I need to focus on taking them out before they take me out with a lot more urgency than when I am on other ATs.
I was going to say more about other ATs and other concepts, but I'll spare you all the scrolling for now!
EDIT: Meant to say... I do see further/future proliferation possibly tripping me up in regards to basing things around concept. It just hasn't yet for me.
The more things are ported across, the more the decision may come down to which AT works better... I just can't think of any examples of that for me... not yet.
Also... on reading through this after posting... was not long at all. Now it's a tiny bit longer... and even more so now... annnnnd....... :P -
Very interesting...
I've not been following this at all, but I'm liking the looks of things...
Has a Frank Frazetta feel to it.
I'm cautiously interested in this one...
Especially seeing Ron Pearlman ("One"!), haha... I didn't know he was in it!
Also... I liked this image:
We'll see... -

While not necessarily the most emotionally vested mission, during the Hero Alignment Mission - where you go to Grandville to rescue an Arachnos agent from execution - when I made my way towards the center of the plaza... and the crowd of citizens standing around all began to shout out my name and cheer me on and such... That was the most amazing touch that I've experienced during this game.
Seriously, I've always loved when NPCs say something to characters as they walk by ("Hey'd, you see Loyal Guardian's new cape?" and so on...), having them all standing around and cheering and shouting out that "The Electric-Knight is here!! You can do it, Electric-Knight!!!"... That was beyond awesome and I'd love to get that into a few more missions.
Seriously, the dynamics of the missions have gotten to some great levels, with the shifting objectives, and some really cool objectives at that, and I absolutely loved that touch.
Having a crowd of onlookers, cheering me on, made me really feel like I was a super hero showing up to do some good for the people.
Quote:Haha... You said "arc hiney"...Can I just say, I'm LOVING reading this thread. Fine. I'll say it. "I'm loving reading this thread."
It brings me back to some of the original writers of the arcs from years gone by as well as the new ones who have come on board and kicked some serious arc hiney.
Thanks, everyone!

Yeah, honestly, I like them all pretty much equally...
The Science Pack may be my most used... especially when I consider the ability to adjust height and body types at the tailor. It's allowed me to do some shape changer stuff that I always wanted to do (not to mention just adjust heights, if I felt like I chose the wrong height originally)...
Plus, I use the different goggles from the Science Pack a lot.
I also use the Martial Arts costume pieces and think they're great... so, our subjective opinions on these things are clearly different.
The Valkyrie Pack may be next on my list. I use some of the parts somewhat frequently (I like the varying shoulder options, the kilt/skirt, the chest piece, the boots and the belt the most... Plus the Mission Teleporter is quite valuable for that one mission that would require multiple zone hops and/or when I just want to get there immediately (especially if I just log in and team up, or something).
The Mutant Pack actually has some great costume options and much of it can be used in bits and pieces... The shoulder parts, the big head organic head detail (kinda like horns), the gloves, the chest and pant details aren't bad either... The wolf tail is very nice (if you have any use for it), the sword is rather different and large... And yeah, sounds like you'd like the power.
It really depends on what characters you have and what you might like to add and/or would like to make...
The Steampunk Pack has a backpack option... Plus a power much like the jump pack from GvE that could still be useful with Ninja Run. And it has a good amount of elegant looking costume pieces for females (since you've mentioned liking the wedding pieces).
Eh, I really like them all, hehe... -

Quote:I'm going to take a slightly different tack. It's good to know Coyote is staying around. But I feel like in the 7 intervening years there have been plenty of helpful players around who should be given a similar honor in the new tutorial. I don't think it should be put to player vote or even nominations. The devs should pick someone(s) to honor that represents the 7 years the Live community has shaped the game.
Just my thoughts.
While the in-game Coyote is indeed a tribute to Mathew Bragg and the impact that he had on the community during his time here...
I think this one tribute to him, in a way, represents the best of us all.
No one else needs such a tribute... we have Coyote and that speaks to the community, past through present and (hopefully) into the future, for us to all strive to be the best we can and continue the legacy of being together in this fun ride. All others who are so deserving of such remembrance are equally a part of the tribute that this game's developers have already implemented.
This tribute displays that our actions, efforts and personalities transcend us simply being players, subscribers, developers, designers, fictional-heroes, pixels... and that it all directly impacts the game world that we all share (and beyond).
And that the developers recognize this and were so impacted by Mathew Bragg... and he shall remain a tribute to the best we can hope to be within our community.
Just my thoughts, upon reflection. -
Heehee...
Pushing two thousand here...
Dear Damz...
If you are someone who would have pooh-poohed any concern over this before... SUCK IT UP!!
Haha... I've often thought the tailor cost at higher levels is ridiculous... But it's all I usually spend my influence on, so I try not to worry about it.
Plus... 12 is still a lot...
I think we just like hording such things, just to know we still have them there...
But now I only have TWELVE free tokens!!! What if I want to use ELEVEN of them??? I'd only have ONE left!!!!
Haha
Decide what is more important, big boy...the market or your style?
(Really... I do think the tailor fees are too high. I think they were set back before the market and when there was basically nothing else to spend money on!)
-
Definitely not dead!
As mentioned, Freedom and Virtue are the top populations [Actually, not sure where the European Servers fit in the population Ranking below those two] (although, I think plenty of the other servers are fine! I only play on Virtue, the unofficial Role-Play server).
As others have mentioned, it can be misleading when looking around and not seeing others... but that is mainly because there are so many zones and most people are in mission zones fighting things (in teams, big and small and solo).
So, the community uses global channels to arrange and gather teams and events and such.
Not that things are dead outside of that, but the right global channel on a server can make the difference of silence and constant communication.
What is also awesome in this game is that you, alone, ca have a ton of fun... Plus, you said that you and some friends are considering it...And, if you can play at the same times, you can pretty much tackle any and everything with just that group (plus join with others for fun and/or for if you ever want to take on something that needs more!).
Basically, this game is based around a very casual, fun, friendly set of systems. Hop on and play for a bit and enjoy beating up bad guys (or good guys) and send them flying. Enjoy watching your character do a cool variety of attacks, powers, etc.
If you like to take a super hero/villain concept and bring them to life and watch them play out super things on your screen... You'll love it.
Even if you don't, you may just enjoy the game itself.
It has layers of complexity (plenty of number crunching if you want to [it's just not needed at all], enhancement choices -to boost your powers effectiveness-, crafting inventions to give more stable and better enhancements, advanced set bonus invention enhancements, Post-Level 50 Incarnate End Game progression, joining/running Super Groups, Organizing/Running events/raids/trials...).
However, you can also ignore all of that and get a host of entertainment just from playing...
Some even fall in love with the character creator, costume customizations, super group base designing, writing your own missions, creating enemies to fight, creating story arcs, etc.
I see zero reason to not give it a chance. You may just be lucky and fall in love with it like so many of us!
I tried the Free Trial, just for fun, with no plans of staying... and I ended up subscribing and I've been here since.
Quote:Completely valid points, but they could also be things that you love about the game (like me... non-traditional loot was a major plus for me. Give me my costume and never make me have to collect some weapon or armor to be the best I can!).Things that could possibly turn you off:
Non-traditional "loot"
Endgame isn't as "serious" or "competitive" like some mmo's (there's no world firsts or "my guild is number 1 on the server" type of environment)
...
I know I'm probably coming off more as a fanboy salesman now, but screw it...
Another thing I think is great about this game is the variety...
Not just of what I listed above, but also just in the selection of powers within each Arch Type!
Not only are the animations and effects different, but the powers do a variety of different things that make each and all of them play differently than each other.
My Electric Blast/Electric Manipulation Blaster plays very differently than a Fire Blast/Mental Manipulation Blaster...
Never mind a Dark Melee/Regeneration Scrapper... or a Gravity Control/Empathy Controller!
Someone could probably give you the numbers of different powerset combinations... I'll just say it's a lot and it actually means something and I've never played any of them that weren't powerful enough nor completely fun.
There's no wrong choice with this game... other than not playing it!!
Haha... hope you all enjoy it... and do let us know!!
Best of luck!
