Well I got my mage, Sanaki, up to lvl 8, and a scout, Shikkoku, up to lvl 3.... both completely solo, but I feel like the game is more geared to solo play, at least at low levels.
Playing on the the Zikel (or however you spell it) server on Elyos. Will probably switch when I find out where some of my friends will be playing. -

Kheld PvP:
Nova form for the 2 ST blasts, slot em for max range, damage, and a couple procs, this is where you do your damage
Dwarf form for Heal (5-6 slot it), -range (from taunt), and TP, dont slot any dwarf attacks
Human form for heal (5-6 slots), dull pain (5-6 slots), and quantum flight (phase), and build up, anything else in human form should only be slotted for set bonuses only. -

It is untrue that powers like fireball check anything other than aoe def. Regardless of whether you are the primary target or otherwise it checks aoe def. This is the case for all aoes such as energy torrent, footstomp, fireball, icestorm, etc.
Either way, I still consider AoE defense next to useless.

If I actually set out to build a character for this, I'm sure I could tank 'normal' stuff without the occasional deaths I deal with now - just like a well built tank. -
Capped ranged defense is good, I got 35ish% on my own fire/kin corr without sacrificing anything. I play in melee/short range combat all the time on my fire/kin corr and the ranged defense does make a difference.
AoE defense on the other hand will not help you much. AoE defense only protects from PBAoEs(which can be avoided by staying at range and utilizing that ranged defense of yours) and splash damage from targetted AoEs (which can be avoided by not standing near the person taking aggro). If you are the target of a targetted AoE (such as fireball) it will check for ranged defense, not AoE defense. -
Just get a stealth IO and stack it with either super speed or stealth from concealment to 'toe bomb' foes.

If Nin is more fun for you than Regen then you should go Nin over Regen. Both are very good sets, numerically.

The thing that worries me about SoE is their tendency with a few games to release a new paid expansion every 3 - 6 months. They may have relaxed a bit on that front, but that was ultimately a large part of what made me leave EQ.
But as I said, if there really is no subscription, I figure it will at least be worth a look now. -

WSs are not very good in PvP -
I'm going to Steam Con instead. It's on the same weekend, and in my hometown, and will save me about 300 bucks + no missed work.
