Quote:This reminds me of a conversation with a dev at herocon where they reflected how they were tired of writing "comic book" stories and wanted to start to do something different. Said they wanted to explore the parts of CoH that weren't typical comic stuff.Praetoria / Incarnates, as it is currently being executed, is such a bad idea. I think what's going on is that the devs are bored with the superhero / villain game and are trying to transfer themselves to another game while keeping their current salaries and positions. They're doing it by changing the superhero game into something else.
Boo hiss.
I don't want to play a game where the goal is to fight an evil empire, and to become a god in the process of dethroning the evil god. It's the classic bad AD&D story with sci-fi scenery. Bleh.
Well, since then that has pretty much been the case.
Boo hiss indeed. -
Quote:Nothing to evaluate. Is simple. An investment of time in the game combined with a hope in what is to come.I can appreciate that you're not happy with the content we've received. I can also appreciate that you just want to know if there's anything in the future that you will find interesting.
But what I find ironic is, you claim you don't need a break from the game, yet you haven't found anything interesting in the game since i13 (Which by the way I find extremely hard to believe). That's 5 issues that have come and you're telling me that there is absolutely nothing at all that has interested you?
There's obviously something keeping you here. Might be time to re-evaluate what that is.
Not to mention I am tired of everytime somebody voices an opinion that is anything but fanboi drowling it is answered with waves of posts about what is wrong with anyone that has even a remotely negative post. I think there should be more story content focused on capes and tights heroes. Obviously this means I should take a break. Obviously there is something WRONG with me. Geesh... is it so awful to just let somebody post their opinion wihout having to try to "fix" them? It is possible for a person to have an opinion contrary to the main without anything being "wrong" with them.
Plus its not like I felt like I do right now the instant I13 came out.
But to the point liked nothing. Hmm... Ok.
Issue 13 - Day jobs are fun. But... umm... where is the new content? Story?!?!?
Issue 14 - Mission Architect. Well we can't think up any more stories. Here, think them up yourself. Oh, and by the way. Gold farming and power levelers are now going to really make the game fun for everyone. Good luck trying to have a conversation in Atlas Park.
Issue 15 - The worst writing we've had in the game. The 5th Column Task Force. Wow... that was bad. So Nemesis, Countess Crey, Gyrfalcon, and Vanessa DeVorr are working with Reichsman why? Maybe they aren't working for him, but Reichsman has captured them and is using them... maybe? What is going on? And how does Requiem feel about losing control of the 5th Column? Horrible. Just bad. Really bad. At HeroCon I've had Devs admit to me this is bad. But, they add it can't really be changed now. ;sigh
Issue 16 - Hard not to like power set customization. But no real story content update. (again what I said attracted me to the game).
Issue 17 - Email attachments, very much full of win. 4 mission story arcs. Good fun. Not perfect, but ok. So yes new story. But, not the best writing we've gotten in CoH. And no thought to how silly the dialog would be for a Praetorian just arriving in Paragon, or a hero just getting their cape. (Should have made this story arc at least level 25)
Going Rogue - New maps. New missions. New Stories. All wonderfully done. I wont say anything here is bad. (Ok aside from Ambushes anyone?) But I play CoH primarily because I enjoy playing a hero. The shades of grey in GR is wonderfully done. To the point that there isn't a path that I really find enjoyable. I have occasionally enjoyed the CoV side. But 90% or more of my game time is blue side. I'm not saying anything wrong with things. Just it isn't what I like. So I have to figure that the missing content from I13 through I17 all went into GR. At this point I was hoping with GR out development would not stay exclusively focused on Praetoria. After all, development did not stay focused on the Rogue Isles after the CoV release.
Issue 18 - Tips are fun. But how the Heroic Alignment mission has anything to do with being a hero is beyond me. Pardon me, please just stand there while I murder this person right in front of you. Right then, I'll just be off. Weee... your a hero. o.O
Issue 19 - Merged Monorails, Ferries, and Black Helicopters, about time. Wonderous. Incarnate? Meh... Seems to have just been about phat loot and raid grinding.
So, whats to come? This is just one vote for some regular capes and tights hero story along with this new "end game" content. -
The skies roared with thunder and the earth heaved,
Then came darkness and a stillness like death.
Lightening smashed the ground and fires blazed out;
Death flooded from the skies.
When the heat died and the fires went out,
The plains had turned to ash. -
Quote:If I leave I doubt I'll be back. I like my 7 year VET status. ;shrugIt sounds like you could do with a break from the game - there's no point playng if you're not enjoying it, and as I20 doesn't have a lot of content that you'd enjoy, now might be a good time to go recharge your batteries, and then come back for I21.
(nearly unbroken except for a 2 week stretch while I was deployed to Iraq and couldn't fix a credit card issue. (old one expired, new one needed to be added).
My real worry is that Issue 21 will be more of the same. Heck... 22, 23, 24... just worried that this is the wave of the future.
It would be nice to hear different. I don't need to hear anything specific. But would be nice to know that something other than Preatoria or Incarnate content (and by that I mean stories, not a new "system") are coming... and soon.
And for the record I have been taking a break. I've been playing other games where I can wear capes and tights. I do not think it is a better game. But there are stories there, missions there, that I haven't run 14 million times already, and playing doesn't feel like a grind.
Edit: I walked away and started to think about this. I do not need a break. What I do need is content I care about. If the game, and the majority of players has gone a new direction then so be it. But just because I don't like the current direction, does not mean I need a break. Quite honestly I've been hanging around hoping for something that interests me since Issue 13 (I am rather patient).
Just saying that I hope that Praetoria and Incarnates are not all we will see in the future. Give us something other than TF grinds, please. -
Really not much to draw from that interview. Overall it didn't excite me. I've been here since the beginning ish (CoH closed beta).
I know that people take all kinds of different things out of the game, and that is a wonderful thing.
I like the stories. I prefer capes and tights, super hero stories. I do not like the Praetorian stories. They are ok occasionally, but really I could care less about Praetoria.
The Incarnate content is ok. I wouldn't miss it if it was removed. I am not a power gamer. It is great that some people are, and I'm glad they are getting this content. Just is kind of "meh" to me. So far it is uberness that lets me do TF's so that I can become more uber. o.O
In the last year my life has changed. I no longer have the time to play I once did. The grinding of TFs, is just too much for me. I've been trying to get the Incarnate levels, just because it is the new stuff. But, it has been very frustrating. If a TF fails I do not have time to reorganize and try again. Last week the PUG I was on couldn't dent Battle Maiden. Last night I couldn't find a group to do Numina. I sat next to her for awhile at midnight EST. Even attempted to form a group on my own. Didn't work. If I can't find a group tonight, then I'll miss out on another week of trying to get a notice.
I would do "regular" content. But after 7 years I have finally gotten over my altitis. There just isn't any content I care to see that I haven't already done.
So reading in that interview Praetoria and Incarnate as the big things to look forward to, well, does not excite me.
I know these are to two new things. But I hope that there is something other than these two in an update soon after Issue 20.
I always said I would stay with CoX till I was kicked out. Have even said I'd like to be the last person kicked off a server if it ever shuts down. But lately I am just finding it harder and harder to find anything to be excited about. I know some love Praetoria and Incarnate stuff. I think that is great. This is just how I feel. -
Quote:I read the entire thread, did what the red name suggested. None of that worked.I clicked on the link in Q#2 and downloaded the file and try to run it. It pretty much destroyed my ability to play. The old shortcuts didn't work, and the file downloaded didn't run at all, and there was no new program installed anywhere...
I had to download the launcher that Zombie Man provided and downloaded the whole new installers. That seemed to work.
After trying the red name suggestions, I then tried the above. It did work. And I can access the game now. -
Which MSXML do I install? It gives me the option for:
msxml6.msi 1.5MB
msxml6_ia64.msi 3.6MB
msxml6_SDK.msi 4.4MB
msxml6_x64.msi 2.6MB

This... THIS... was why there had to be signed NDAs? This is the amazing new content that needed such hush, hush...
;sigh
I am happy for those that like this. But, a bunch of TFs, and thats all? For me it is a big:
Meh... -
I fail to see why it has to have a tragic ending to be good?
It can have a tragic ending and be good. Or it could have them escape and be good. Either done right could be a good movie.
You seem to be arguing that the only way it could be a good movie is if it ended tragically.
Frankly I think the clue is in the title. I have expected from the beginning that the ending will be a "Sucker Punch" to the audience. -
Quote:Same here. The cuts without the voice over just seem flat. It has to have the voice overs. My hope is they put the narrative voice of Decker BACK IN THE MOVIE!
I don't care what Ford thought or whoever else!
I loved the voice over! It added that whole crime noir detective feeling of the movie I loved!
Or maybe I loved it because that's how it originally was, and so I think it's better that way! I don't care! I LOVED IT!
Keeping the fact that Decker is or is not a Replicant, doesn't bother me at all. Leave it in the air or say one way or another, but leave the VOICE OVER IN! -
Quote:I'm not sure this could have been said any better.I'd vote for a delay, but this isn't really so much of an issue about pets or whatever, but it's the thrust of why the Incarnate System exists in the first place.
To me, pets that have powers are interchangeable things with animations that should be customisable.
Honestly, if the point of the Incarnate System is to achieve 'godly levels of power' or however the game or you as the player want to explain it, there's an expected level of customisation or signature ability display (and really, didn't this start with people saying 'hey, Statesman has that cool lightning power, how can we do that?') then why can't you as the player have some say in just how that manifests?
Currently as it stands, the way you spend your shards to get the Alpha power of your choice (and to be fair, you have a good range of choices) has a desired level of flexibility. You want Damage/Defense, you can specialise in that. Great.
It's fine that this continues into the Lore slot, but why tie a system that's obstensibly about customisation and mixing these Incarnate Abilities to something that is extremely visually specific? I don't want one of the biggest threats to Primal Earth's pets. That's like saying 'hey, well those Nazis over there? We need to stop them, so we'll use Nazis too.' If we're drawing on the power of the Well and that implies some degree of ability to use it, then let us have the choice of what we draw upon. I could care less about the mechanical/gameplay effects...they can be the same, and we know this from seeing the Mastermind pets.
Don't throw away customisation this late in the game to feed the beast that is the Praetorian storyline. There's stuff beyond Praetoria; let's have a stepping stone on that road not be so closely tied to it rather than be tied to the greater story, that of the road of the Incarnate.
S.
This doesn't have to be difficult. If this is just a buff pet, then give us something generic like a wisp and be done with it. Just don't force villain NPCs on us, praetorian or not. It just doesn't make sense. -
I am beyond tired of Praetoria. It is the only real story content we've gotten since Issue 13.
We all get different things out of the game. It is wonderful that there are so many ways to enjoy the game. What I like are the stories. I don't care about PvP, or grinding for new stuffs.
It is no wonder then that lately I've been playing other games. I find that when I'm deciding which game to play I sit and think a moment. "Do I want to grind out another TF just to get a notice? Or experiance a new story arc in another game?"
Lately I've been picking the other game.
I like capes and tights. I love super hero comics. I would love it if there were more stories focused on those kinds of stories. I could care less about shades of grey Praetoria. I am just worried that the content of CoX is going to be rooted in Praetoria for quite some time to come. -
Quote:This, absolutely this. I don't want any NPC at all. There is no reason my hero would have a villain npc following behind.Generic ones that can be interpreted in a greater number of ways.
I could probably come up with dozens of them if I really had to.
Make it different colored versions of the wisp and I'll be fine. Just not what it currently is.
As has been said, this game has been all about customization, why change that now? At least give us something generic enough that we can call it what we want.
Edit:
I don't care if they delay the entire mess. I remember a time when the devs wouldn't release things until it was good. Please don't start now releasing just to be getting stuff out the door. So my vote... Delay and get this right. -
That is exactly what happens to me too. I actually figured it was the same as Tenzhi's problem.

Quote:You got it to launch Live?!?!?Installed, and launches both Test and Live just fine.
The buttons on the side COULD stand to be a bit bigger, but I can live with them as-is easily enough.
The EULA and NDA are very hard to read, though. White letters against a light blue background (CoH loading screen) are not very easy to see.
I figured that it was part of testing that I could launch everything, except live. Hmm...
Umm... Never mind my never mind then. o.O -
Ok, I think the above post is a "never mind". I was trying to launch the live game with it.
Test and Beta launch just fine. (Can't get onto the beta server, for the record. But it does launch the game.) -
I installed the launcher and updated all 3 versions (Live, Test, and Beta). But when I click on "Play Now" the old launcher opens and I get this error:
Can't delete file I:/City of Heroes/NCSoft/Launcher/NCLauncher.exe some other program has it open! Aborting.
I click ok on that box and the old launcher closes. So I am unable to get the game to launch.

It isn't a "big deal". But it is for me a disappointment. Right now I have limited play time. The last few weeks all I've managed is to run the weekly task force missions. Having this TF before Issue 20 means that I will be very short of shards.
Great for people that don't have that issue. For me it means it will take longer to get the next tier alpha.
I'm not rage quiting, I'm not crying doom. Just saying that this TF might have been better as a target after Issue 20. -
I've been on the fence with comics lately anyway. If this is true... it think it will be the nail in the coffin. I am already planning on going in to my local comic shop and canceling at least half my subs anyway. This tempts me to just cancel the entire thing.

Ramiel didn't have anything new to say to me.
-
I am back from a conference and still have this issue.
I have two computers connected to my Verizon FIOS router. One computer can access CoH pages, the other can't.
I tried something new today. I opened the Command Prompt and typed:
ping www.cityofheroes.com
On one computer I got host not found and on the other it gave me the ping rate.
So what would cause one computer to not be able to find the host?
I have not had a problem with any other website, just CoH. -
Quote:This is very much like my issue.I've had this issue for a bit. I posted in this forum last week about it.
One PC works fine, this one won't see it. I've narrowed it down to an issue with DNS (which is odd, since I use the same DNS server for both PCs).
I corrected it on this PC (somewhat) by adding an entry to my HOSTS file for boards.cityofheroes.com. When I launch my CoH client, however, the top window of the updater displays "Cannot display this webpage' messages.
This PC has IE 8, the other I *think* has IE 7 (although I can't even tracert to the DNS name, but I can to the IP address on this PC).
Also, I have Fairpoint Communications for an ISP.
Also, my other post was http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=249895 -
