  1. I'm killing one of my characters to free up his name but he's got 1 hero merit. What's the best way to spend that? LotG +rech costs 2 so I'm tempted to try to roll something good. I guess some extra cash wouldn't hurt, but I also wouldn't mind an IO that fits every build no matter what the AT is.

    Any advice?

That's kind of what I figured but didn't want to think was true :/ Thanks for the info.
  3. So when exactly does this go live? It's 9:25pm PST (which is Friday on the East Coast) but the prices aren't updated.
  4. Just as an extra note, you can cash in merits from TFs at Merit Vendors in WW and other places. With merits, you can buy recipes (if you're a crafter) and you can do reward rolls where you kind of roll the dice for valuable recipes and salvage. It's worth it, especially when you get a recipe worth 200m for a simple 20 merits.

Aside from that, running with higher level toons also comes with the possibility of being recognized as a lowbie/newbie and being given some extra cash. As you've probably already seen, people are very generous in this game and if you get to know people (by playing through an 1 1/2 hour TF, for instance) they'll see you're new and a nice guy and they might throw you a quick 10 mil just for existing. Don't be ashamed to admit you're new and trying to make a decent late level 20's/30's build for a measily 3 mil because if you're nice about it you'll be rewarded. I was teaming with someone new to the game a month ago and after some chatting I found out he was so happy about making 20 mil off of a recipe so I gave him 100 mil. I don't do much level 50 content so I'm not super rich, but he seemed cool and really appreciative of 20 mil so I knew the 100 mil would blow his mind (pretty sure it did). There are far richer people than me doing that on a daily so venture out of your sewers and explore!
  5. All the advice in this thread is solid. I'll reinforce the fact that you're missing out A LOT by not doing the Weekly Strike Target TF. It gives you an autolevel (or 1/2 bar, forget how it works) and double the merits you'd normally get. Plus you get plenty of xp and goodies.

Add the "Virtue LFG" tab, if you're on Virtue. You can find teams easily with that. Also, go here to find out what TF is up for WST:

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=251519

TFs can be a lot of fun (can be) and doing enough of them (certain ones) will earn you accolades, which give you permanent bonuses to that character/toon. Some of those accolades will help a lot post 50.
  6. Do Lore pets buff your teammates or just you?
  7. This is all helpful and great advice, thanks a lot.

Is there a way to identify purple IOs by looking at them, or should I consult a list?

Ouro has a level 25 requirement so no one under 25 can do flashbacks, right? Can I still get older mishes as a level 50?
  8. I don't have much experience building a tank so I had a couple of quick questions that I couldn't find answers for. I've read a bunch of tanker guides (mostly the general ones about being a good tank). I have a Shield/Electric that's leveled to 39.

    1. With Shield/, you're working with 2 different types of defense, right? So can I soft cap all situational with an IO set, or would I have to use enhancements in other powers to meet it? Is it possible to get close to soft capping typed damage (lethal/smashing, etc)?

    2. Is there a guide that details what enemies do what type of damage? As a Shield/, what type of damage is a big weakness?

    3. I've seen that LotG is a really popular set. Is it that much worse to use, say, Red Fortune, or one of the other sets? I'd say maintaining aggro and being able to take damage are a lot bigger priorities than doing damage, for what I want to do with this toon post-50.

    4. Are there any tanker-, or Shield-specific, things I should know as far as slotting, damage types, situational defense, etc goes?

Thanks in advance for any help!
  9. I'm leveling up a Shield/Elec tanker specifically for hosting fun teams with lower level pubbies. I want to play some of the older story arcs, run tips mishes and TFs and just enjoy some content I've never played much (Midnighters Club/Cimerora, Croatoa, Ouro, custom AE mishes, etc).

My plan is to level him to 50 as soon as I can (he's 39) and then do as many trials as I can to unlock some incarnate slots. I realize I can start now without having incarnate slots, but I'd rather have them first. In that time I'll try to pick up some IO sets and make as much money as I can so I can pass out some cash and just generally be a fun host for lowbies/newbies.

I've read about how enhancements work with exemplaring but I'm not sure I completely understand. Also, I don't have much experience with Flashback missions. Is it easier to enhance with however high level enhancements I want and play flashbacks, or enhance somewhat lower so I can exemplar back?

Any other ideas about things I can do to make it easier to exemplar down, and/or enjoy the content I mentioned above?

Any advice? I've even tried scaling the resolution down to ridiculous levels, where my character is made up of like 9 pixels, and I STILL have this issue. This tells me that it's not my video card and it's the 1 GB of RAM causing a lot of the problems.

    Any help is appreciated!
  11. Any time I'm traveling through a city, I get pauses and sometimes rubberbanding. It's never a smooth experience until I get into an instance, and then it's bearable although sometimes when the screen fills up with powers it pauses for a good few seconds or more. Trials are ridiculously laggy and crappy. I decided to try Safe Mode hoping it would just be really smooth and awesome, but it still has long load times and those pauses (although much more occasionally).

The thing is, I have an extra PC that's one of those super crappy Celeron type deals and if I play CoH on Safe Mode, it performs better than my normal PC.

    Here's my rig:

    CPU
    Intel Core 2 CPU
    6320 @ 1.86GHz
    1.87Ghz, 1.00 GB of RAM

    Video Card
    7900GS

  12. Just a general SoA question:

I'm already level 18 but I haven't done my costume mish with Brick Johnson. Can I still go to him to get the mish or will a higher level contact in Cap give it to me?
  13. When you reach level 24 and do the respec, do you get access to normal costume options? I have a concept in mind and I need access to one of the pieces from the normal costume creator.
  14. Wow, thanks for all the great info. I'm definitely not against doing some damage, but I love when the attacks have even a minor 5% debuff. I usually have no trouble finding damage dealing pubbies to team with, so a friend and I will use combos like Ice/Rad troller and Kin/Rad blast defender and then we pick up all damage and we usually have zero problem pumping the difficulty up 3+ and ripping through mobs.

There's so much good info in here, so I thank you guys. I guess it's fairly obvious my decision will be between Fortunata and Bane Huntsman (although I'll read through the thread again just in case I'm missing something). The double assault/maneuvers/tactics/vengeance (huge vengeance fan) possibility is amazing so there's no doubt in my mind that a VEAT is the way to go.

Again thanks for taking the time to get me up to speed on VEATs. Anymore info is icing on the cake.
  15. I love being a defender. I get that sense of joy that a Stalker must get when he pulls an awesome AS, but I get it every single time I give out SB. Every. Single. Time. I pride myself on being the oil that keeps the gears of my little pubbie teams going. It's just something I think I'm built for.

And now I'd like to build an awesome SoA. Of course I don't want to do any damage. I'd be very happy if I only had attacks that did some debuffing, in fact.

Is this possible? What type of SoA would be best? Is it worth it to make a SoA that is geared strictly to pubbie teaming, where it can give tons of buffs and debuffs out? Pets are fine, especially if they're mini defenders. I honestly don't care if I can't solo a minion, I just want to defend. Help me!
  16. Thanks to everyone for the fantastic advice.

I ended up choosing Fire/Fire. I only had time to do a sewer run and we had an amazing team, so I haven't seen much of the build yet and I haven't really gotten to put many things to the test, but it's been a lot of fun so far.

If you guys see "He's a Tiger" running around, give me a shout so I can thank you!
  17. It's probably my inexperience at tank, but I've had a hard time being too squishy in the past so I'm leery about using anything but Stone. My partner has decided to switch to Radiation as a secondary. Will that make enough of a difference to justify using maybe Stone/Fire?

Thanks for the help so far!
  18. I'll be partnering with an Ice/Empathy controller and I'm not sure which tanker sets to choose. I'm a novice tanker so my immediate choice is Stone since I don't mind trading some offense for defense and I don't want to get destroyed not knowing what to slot.

Will their Ice primary be enough to shield me from damage so that I can choose another tanker primary, or should I play it safe as a noob and just stay with Stone?

Also, would it be worth it to use an Ice secondary to stack with their Ice? I like the idea of every mob being super slowed down but my first choice would be Dark or Kin. Definitely the thing I want to accomplish with this is to provide a really strong backbone so that any pubbies we pick up will have a good ol' time and not have to worry about getting destroyed.

    What do you guys think?
  19. Some things I'm not clear about:

    - is Plasma Shield that vital to take?
    - what about Heat Exhaustion?
    - Carrion Creepers sounds like a MTG card, so +10 for that, but isn't it just a crappier version of Quick Sand?
  20. DJ Zero. Wasn't he with Massive Attack back in the day? Yeah, I remember him, he played with Portishead and he does the beat on that new MGMT song. Awesome!

    No, not really.

    Sounds fun, can't wait : )

(just researched and found out he's a real DJ. thought he was an NPC DJ. all the better!)
  21. My fiance and I play together. We have characters that share background stories (Kid Scalpel and Kid Morphine are two), which we only play together.

We met through another game, and knew each other for 3 years before we actually chatted seriously. We had socialism and anime in common, so it wasn't long before she moved to the East Coast to be with me. Eventually we decided we'd take a little tour of the US and we ended up living on the West Coast.

Guys, if you don't have a gamer grrl, get one ffs. And force them to read a comic, gamer grrls are like sponges just ready to absorb other nerdery.
