FA will win on damage, AoE damage, ST damage - you name it. Your survival depends on Healing Flames and killing the hell out of stuff really fast (which FA can do).
SD is arguably the next best secondary for offense, however the level of defense it provides is well above what FA can provide. -
Quote:You mean Spiritual for Recharge and Healing. The Nerve Alpha boost would be of much more benefit to you. Increasing your healing and getting closer to perma-Hasten is much better than a 5% S/L resistance increase.
And depending on build goals, I would also consider the Musculature tree. -
Quote:You have OWTS turned on. That's the major discrepancy in resistances.Whoa... sorry to post again so soon, but I may have mistaken on my previous comment on this build tweak.
Now I've re-read the numbers 3 times, and unless I'm losing my mind (Highly possible), then your tweak has me losing a bit of defense, and a LOT of resistance. I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure I'd want to go that direction if I'm reading everything correctly.
Maybe I posted the incorrect build? This is the one I'm currently trying to better, if possible:
Quote:Also again, just to make sure, how do my def debuff resists look? Good enough? Or am I missing something?
Otherwise you're at 59% DDR, and around 83% when double stacked.
You can either look for a third slot for AD for another HO, or you can just carry a few small purples with you "just in case". -
I'm debating picking up my fourth.

If you're going to spend all that time on a build, all that INF to purchase all of your IO sets, then it makes no sense of any kind to leave out accolades.
So I think you we're doing the right thing. -
I'm going to heavily recommend fire.
Here's why:
Provides both excellent ST and good AoE damage.
Requires much less endurance and much less rehcarge to to run a decent ST chain than any of the others you mentioned.
WM on low recharge is also...really slow. -

Quote:Scrappers can keep that edge, talking means we are not killing.Scrappers have the edge in a "social" team, where players are pausing to banter or taking time outs to discuss strategy, because little pauses don't make you feel like you're losing fury.
I'll just add that if you are capable of doing that consistently and successfully, you will come to find it extremely difficult not to play a Brute. -
Quote:At L17 60-70% is pretty par for the course. What does this mean exactly? I never played a brute until like a week ago. Now I have a brute, but as of level 17, I don't think I've ever gotten past about 60-70% fury. What is something "extreme" that you could do to get it higher? I mean there's only so many attacks you could use in a given time. I spam my attacks, while getting attacked...but it has never gone anywhere even close to 100%, no matter how long I spam them for. Is 100% fury even physically possible to attain now?
Maintaining 80% pretty much requires you to be fully saturated in an aggro cap worth of enemies and attacking constantly - and generally this will at the minimum require you to be L35 to 40+, even 50 in some cases and have your endurance under control.
The further you are towards an endgame build with IOs, the faster and easier it will be to build and maintain fury.
For my L50 brutes 80% is a pretty consistent number, with long peaks at 85% possible. -
Quote:You could always go brute and pick up darkest night.I would like to learn how to calculate the math needed for this game so I can become a numberz cruncher lol. I think I'd shoot for 60% using defense bonuses and keep my Spiritual AS to increase my recharge it doesn't seem like it is a reasonable trade off until I get to the very rare when I have a 3% wiggle room in order to add more recharge.
-
If 60% to all positions is required for the new "softcap" in the new world order, I think my days left playing this game are numbered.
-
Aside from what Werner already explained, I tried a few ways to work out the bonuses using mids.
Basically I looked at each defensive power and wrote down the amount of current DEF enhancement in each one, and how much defense that grants.
Then I rounded down what the eventual Ultra Rare would would add to each one, so +7% enhancement, affected by ED and +13% enhancement unaffected by ED.
Then I slotted each individual DEF toggle to reach that amount of enhancement on top of what my original numbers were.
Take the total DEF bonus for that power, subtract from the original bonus and then add up all of the differences to get what the build would get overall.
Or you could just eyeball it and say about 2~3% DEF overall.
Edit: I was curious, so I went through my build and I would get (approx):
+2.355% Melee Def
+2.585% Ranged & AoE Def
It's nothing to sneeze at, and people (including myself) are willing to pay 2 to 3 billion for a single 3% boost from an IO.
However, you have to compare it to the other potential benefits, chiefly Spiritual & Cardiac.
My personal opinion, I would rather have Spiritual & Cardiac vs. Nerve. -
Quote:SS/Fire is pretty boring stuff as you just wait for your one button(FS) to come up every 5 seconds. You can't use Rage either because the end drain slows you down to much. Elec/Fire is busy all the way killing non stop and LR has a bigger radius than FS. SS/Fire people have never tried anything but that build. I have both and SS/Fire is far more boring and I don't like managing the end if I don't have to. So what fun is it if you don't even use Rage?? You just have to rely on Red Insps of course.. and that means any AT is just as good if not better.

Quote:I disagree.
As a matter of fact, I ran one of my fave's, a MA/wp scrapper, through a pug ITF last night. I routinely took on whole spawns of cimmy's, solo. If I started to have a cascade failure (rare, I think it happened three times the whole run) I solved it by hopping out of the spawn and heading for the next spawn. By the time I got there, the cascade had vanished, as it usually does, and I was back to face-stompin' goodness. Mobility is your friend.
If you have to run away, you have been defeated.
Quote:Trust me, wp with equal investment is WAY tougher than SD, with the possible exception of a bs/sd.
I have multiples of both, I have Brute versions - which favor WP even more and I wholly disagree with you. -
Quote:The reason you don't see it mentioned as much is because Rad E + Sonic Blast is generally considered to be better on a defender. What about sonic blast? It is repeatedly touted as being a single target monster and an AV killer when paired with radiation emission or traps. The -resistance secondary effect of sonic also benefits teammates, as well, making it potentially even more attractive to him.
-
Quote:I have a friend (no really) who wants to start CoH, but is somewhat particular about what he plays in MMO's, and has asked for a character that matches the following:
- must be evil (villain)
- must be ranged
- must be high damage
- must be focused on single target damage, preferably the highest ST damage
- preferably the combo would be hard to play *well* skill wise (as opposed to hard to play due to bad synergy, gimped, etc)
I explained to him that CoH does tend to favor AoE in many areas, but he still wants to be the ST guy.
I have no experience with Corruptors, but just looking at paragon wiki I was thinking of Rad/Kin, as it appears to be ST friendly, and Kin allows for stealing +DMG.
However, I could be way off about how Rad is performing and where it sits in the AOE to ST spread.
Any ideas on challenging villainous extreme ranged dps?
Fire/Kin would probably be one of the highest ranged Corr combos, the problem is the /kin aspect requires you to head into short range - I would think to be a fairly challenging build to play for a first time CoH player.
??/Fire Dom also pumps out impressive Damage (Fire/Fire/Fire for all out offense).
Tell your friend not to avoid the AoE attacks, he is not playing ???MMO. -
Quote:If you're more interested in the melee-controller aspect as opposed to straight out melee, I would actually recommend Tanker over Brute.Thanks. Since I'm not a huge melee fan, I think a "mini-controller" WM/DA would fit my playstyle better.
The Tanker has:
- HP advantage
- Resist advantage
- A stronger heal in dark regen (due to having more HP)
- Can use OG or CoF without worrying about them hindering Fury.
- Gauntlet, to further cement your crowd controlling capabilities.
-
Quote:I never use auto-brawl, and rarely use it at all once I have a halfway decent attack chain going.Pretty straight-foward question. In these days of massive amounts of recharge, do brutes still keep brawl in their chain, much less on auto?
At high end recharge, the only time I use brawl would be on my SS Brutes when they rage crash. -
Quote:I agree, although you only need to survive long enough to kill everything.I agree that ITF's and large groups of cim's create serious problems for wp toons, moreso than SD's, but SD isn't surviving indefinitely in a mob of cim's without a heal of some kind either.
Quote:I also prefer SD, because being a scrapper lover, I enjoy offense and killing things, and SD is clearly superior in what it brings to that table. But for pure survivability based on the powerset alone, I would still argue that wp edges sd by a bit from start to finish, all things being equal.
Quote:But the argument that once fully io'd, both sets are virtually unkillable except in extreme situations, so why not take the set that is clearly superior offensively, is certainly valid, but then you might want to consider the recent trend of the newer high level content containing more than average defense busting enemies, which makes sd's survivability drop faster than wp's.
Hopefully they will mix it up a bit and not solely focus all new content on foiling defense.
Only because the ITF is popular, and Rularuu are comparatively rarer. -
Quote:Brutes are a little more survivable than a Scrapper, and do a lot more damage than a Tank.I was thinking that a brute should be (damage dealing aside) a little less survivable than a tank, but more survivable than a scrapper.
And I'll second that defense based secondaries don't really come into their own until endgame. -
Quote:I have both WP & SD brutes, and here are my observations from countless hours on the ITF.Willpower, with the HP accolade bonuses and softcapped def should experience less issues than SD does. Once SD gets hit by a big mob in the ITF it goes down quickly even with DDR, as it usually doesn't have a lot of buffer defense and has less to fall back on than WP(Regen). You may have gotten bad luck with one character over the other, had better teammates, or even had a lesser build on the WP compared with the SD.
All points refer to unsupported combats at full aggro cap, assumes full IO builds.
Willpower's regen and resistances, once defenses are crashed (and they will crash unless you pop lucks/have buffs/etc) is not sufficient on it's own to survive.
However if you do hit SoW, use Darkest Night, or carry T3 Oranges and have a good enough build - you can survive full negative DEF crashes.
SD on the otherhand will see DEF crashes much less frequently, and will recover more quickly from them - SC with it's massive area KB on a high rech provides enough cushion to help prevent DEF crashes even further, not to mention simply removing the threats outright by killing them faster.
The weak point for SD is actually massed elite bosses, who have tons of hit points, an accuracy bonus and therefore a better chance to hit you than you normally face when softcapped (something like 6-7% I think), hit like freight trains and laugh at knockback - however the above tactics employed by willpower: T9, T3 Oranges, Darkest Night can all play a major factor in survivability.
The verdict?
A capable player with a solid build should very rarely die using either secondary.
For me, that means I end up playing SD more often - because if I'm not going to die on either one, I might as well add more offense. -
Here's the same build with some slotting changes. I worked this up pretty quickly, so there might be some things I've overlooked.
Keep shatter, aside from being a great place for PBAoE sets, it's a solid attack overall. I'm not great fan of cone attacks, but this is one of the better ones IMO.

Quote:Focus on getting 5 x LoTG 7.5s into the build before you worry about purples. So I might go with this unless there is something else I'm missing. Funds wise I won't be able to slot this bugger up immediately. But I do have a fair amount of these IO's spread over 2-3 toons.
This character, Srixxon, has 2 Vet specs left and the Issue respec so what I'm thinking is I do this now, or sooner rather than later, and then IF I can I'll re-visit with purples? I don't know if that's a good idea but that's my logic for now.
I also think you should consider dropping touch of fear for grant cover. -
Quote:No, and that's a pretty bizarre situation (and not a stupid question).Deus this might be a stupid question, but I have a toon created in Praetoria that gets Hero Merits for completing Tips mission arcs (morality arcs), but my DM/Shield dude pre-dates Going Rogue, so does this explain why he doesn't get hero merits? Just curious about this.
All characters on your account, if you have going rogue enabled, are capable of getting Alignment Merits - under the stipulation that they are full hero or full villain (Rogues and Vigilantes can not earn alignment merits through morality missions).
I'll give the build a look later tonight. -
Quote:In general I agree with you, but pre i19 sometimes slots were tight, and 14% DDR could be sacrificed to squeeze something else you need in - especially if you were already running 2~3x membranes.Grant Cover adds a good chunk of defense debuff resistance. It is not a good idea to skip it.
It also depends on your primary, a high recharge Elm/SD has a pretty serious amount of KD - if your enemies aren't standing, they aren't debuffing your defense (Tanker/Brute SS/SD, WM/SD, SM/SD also get a mention here as well).
My SS/SD brute ran for quite a while with no Grant Cover, and maybe once or twice per ITF, if I was totally off on my own, I would see dangerous def buffing - usually around 40-43% def I would pop a good luck or phenom luck.
Still, as I said, with inherent fitness I would never skip grant cover on an SD build from this point forward.
