  1. Just found something that would probably sway me to an intel chip for a budget system, i5 2300 is only 166 bucks on amazon.com. I'm not a hardcore AMD fan, just pointing out that that you shouldn't just automatically ignore them because of the intel chips being faster. For the price vs performance, they are comparable. But, at 166 dollars for the 2300, its a great deal.
As for choosing Nvidia cards over AMD, for anyone that plays CoH, they should def get an Nvidia card, the problems with AMD drivers and CoH are bordering on stupidity. I don't know if this is the fault of CoH or AMD, but it doesn't make any sense at all.
  2. Spoken like a true intel fanboy. I've been building systems for years, and never had any kind of issues whatsoever running AMD processors. I've used both, in my own systems and customers systems, and for general gaming and all around use, there is virtually no difference. If I was doing serious multitasking, or video decoding, or something that is processor intensive, I would recommend an intel processor, but for CoH, and any other MMO around, as well as 99% of other games out, anything more than a solid AMD quad core is just overkill.
I recommended the 4 core over the 6 core purely because of clock speed, and the fact that unless you are doing some serious multitasking, you arent going to see a performance increase with a lower clock 6 core.
The power supply(which is a Corsair Builder Series) is 80+ certified, with the system components running at 422 watts (at max, which would very rarely happen) would be perfectly fine to run these components. If you were planning on adding a second video card or something down the road, get a bigger PSU.
The motherboard is a cheap one, but I've used ASrock in several systems and have had no issues. Your personal experiences may vary. Mine have been good.
As for the case, you could go with a full size atx case and have more room to work with and hide cables, but you'd probably be surprised how much bigger it is than your average oem computer. This case has very good reviews, and will work with the card I've listed, I've used the combination before.
You could spend a little extra money and get a WD caviar, or maybe a SeaGate Barracuda hard drive, but all in all it wont make much of a performance difference.
We aren't talking about a high end gaming rig here, which is what you guys seem to be recommending. CoH is near the very bottom of the spectrum when it comes to graphics load. I play CoH on an AMD 4450e system with a 9800gtx, and can run in ultra on 1440x900 with no issues whatsoever.
If you don't mind spending an extra 200 bucks on the system for what amounts to brand name preference, by all means, go with Intel. It is faster, and because it is, will probably last a year or 2 longer. But realize that the hardware is WAY ahead of the software right now, and this has been the issue for a couple of years. Having an I7 or i5 is great, but there really isnt much out there that requires the performance increase that they have over AMD processors.
  3. I tried tw/fa/fire as a farmer as soon as tw was introduced. I spent quite a bit trying to get it on par with my ss/fa/mu, but it just wouldnt compare, speed wise. With fiery embrace, the dmg of both of the cone attacks is much better than footstomp, while whirling smash is roughly 60% of footstomps dmg(and thats just at a guess, compared to my own ff/sa, with oblits slotted in both). I expiremented with several different builds, even trying a build without burn(which was a total and complete bomb by the way). The redraw really is a killer, i know that momentum helps in some cases, but you cant have it ready every time you need to click an incarnate, a heal, or burn. If played just right, i think tw/fa could be as fast as a "slow" ss/fa, but really lagged behind once you factor in mu or pyre mastery. None of this is scientific, and i havent crunched any numbers, this is just from my personal experience, im very much looking for something that can perform as well as my ss/fa/mu in farming, because spamming footstomp is just too damn boring.
  4. Here is a build, including monitor, that would run you under 1000 dollars, and thats including buying a copy of Windows 7 64.

The power supply in this build could be a bit bigger, but the 500w should have no issues whatsoever pushing everything, and Corsair is a very good brand. This system would be able to play any modern game at high settings with great fps, and CoH on ultra would be a breeze.
  5. The intel i5 processors are great, but for just web surfing and gaming, and AMD chip would be much cheaper, and work just as well. The AMD 970(4 cire 3.5ghz) is only about 130 bucks, and while it wont benchmark as high as an i5, is easily overclockable and built for gaming, not to mention the AMD chips are much easier to mount the heatsink and fan on. I've ran both AMD and Intel, and for everyday tasks, you can't really tell a difference.
  6. For farming, ss/fa is still vastly superior to tw/fa. The redraw(every time you use a fa ability, you have to put your weapon away and draw it again) slows things down quite a bit, not to mention missing out on rage. TW is capable of farming I'm sure, but i would pair it with something along the lines of WP or maybe EA, something that doesnt involve a lot of clicking of defensive powers, and its still gonna be a bit slower than ss/fa, because of the absence of burn.
  7. Havent really played with WP too much, but did some playing around with your build and this is what i came up with. This gives you slightly more defense in most areas, as well as an extra 5% recharge, plus the ff+recharge proc in crowd control, but you lose flying and have to use either ss or sj as an alternative. Personally I use ss, with CJ its easy enough to get around most zones.

I use the same on my ss/fa/mu, but the proc only lasts for 5 seconds. With one in each pbaoe, you could have have the recharge proc up a big chunk of the time. You also need momentum to use whirling smash, which i assume is the footstomp clone you are referring to, and though it has a pretty short recharge, it also does considerably less dmg than either of the cone attacks. Granted the chances of the proc firing will be smaller on these other 2 powers, but getting the extra slots for each is not detrimental to the build in any way that i can see, and the enhancements themselves arent expensive at all.
Edit: The extra recharge would have a positive change in the dps of the build, but probably not a huge one. With the 3 st and 3 aoe attacks, you'll not be waiting for something to recharge,my intent is more aimed at keeping momentum up and being able to use the highest dmg attacks as much as possible.
  9. Here is the build i came up with. I used Battle axe as a template for TW. Chop=crushing blow, swoop=follow through, gash=rend armor, and the three aoes are all pbaoe knockdown like tw. The levels arent the same, so youd ultimately have to move some stuff around in the end, but this is defense capped for s/l/c/f/n, with 150ish% recharge, and procs in every aoe attack. After reading this, and talking about it, I think this might be my next character. This is just a quick one i threw together, so I might have broke the 5 rule, but this should give you a good idea of what you can accomplish with TW.

  10. You're right, I have never played EA, but with an endless endurance bar, I would change all of these bonuses out for recharge. With my tw/fa build, I was able to get 180% recharge. One thing that might help a lot with tw, most of the powers have kb or kd, so you could slot a force feedback chance for recharge in all of the aoe attacks, with 5 oblits. I'll try to work up a build when i get my lunch break, though I'm not sure if there is another scrapper primary with 3 PBAoe knockdowns to simulate TW.
  11. You can't go wrong with Microsoft Security Essentials, works great, and not nearly as intrusive as any of the other AV programs I've tried.
  12. I think both of these look fairly solid, however there are a couple of changes i would make. Defensive sweep is a low end cost, very short recharge power that with just 1 def io slotted adds about 12% defense(melee, smashing) with every use, that stacks. On top of this, it also creates momentum, which makes it a very good power to keep in every rotation, even though the dmg is very low. This would free up quite a bit of slotting room you could use to add more end recovery bonuses, or possibly recharge if you arent having any end problems.
This brings me to my second point, my tw toons are all brutes, but with tw/fa, the endurance use of tw is very high, even with t3 cardiac i found myself having to eat blue inspirations quite frequently. This was with about 40% more recharge than either of your builds, and aoe heavy, but with considerably less static end usage(1.62% in Rook's build, 1.42 in Infini's, and about .99 in my brutes).
So, in short, I would focus a little less on smashing/lethal/melee defense in each build, and use sets to improve recovery/recharge time. Losing up to 12% defense in each of these makes the defense easily replaceable by popping a single small luck, and gives you a lot more room to pursue other bonuses.
I would also drop tough in both of these builds, as it seems to be used for nothing more than a mule for defensive set bonuses. This will free up some slots to possibly add to attacks as end redux, or maybe accuracy.
Rook, I would swap Focused Acc for Tactics. The end cost difference is pretty considerable, and you could 5 slot it with Adjusted Targeting for an acc and recharge time bonus.
  13. Ok, dropped recall friend and a slot from maneuvers to get Hell on Earth and the 2 io's you suggested, build looks like this now:

  14. This post was cross posted in the masterminds section, just to see which one got more feedback. I realize this is frowned upon, but wanted to test it after reading this post: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=279893.
  15. This post was also posted in the build workshop section, just to see which one got more feedback. I realize this is frowned upon, but wanted to test it after reading this post: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=279893.
  16. I'm looking for some build critique on my Demon/Thermal MM. This character will be used almost exclusively for Itrials, with some mission soloing. Personal survivability isn't too much of a concern for me, but pet survivability and damage are my highest priorities. I tried to focus mainly on pet dmg and recharge for forge spamming. Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for your help!

  17. I was wanting some critique on my demon/thermal build. This character will be used mainly for Trials, with some solo questing as well. I'm trying to get the most dmg possible out of my pets, and am not terribly worried about survivability, with all the buffs ill have during trials. Any input on this is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

  18. Im looking to buy a Gladiators armor +3 def, any lvl is fine. 2.3b. Thanks! Send a tell to @demon forge or @fourthhorseman.

    Edit: Bought one. Thanks all.
  19. For the past 2 weeks or so, I've been crashing very frequently. The thing that will always crash CoH is AE cave missions. Some times i can be inside the mission for 30 seconds and crash, sometimes up to 10 minute. This has been happening despite several changes ive made to my system. I've reinstalled windows 7 64 bit, and the biggest improvement was before any updates were applied to W7. I've also got a WinXP Pro32 bit partition on my machine, and the crashes happen in about the same amount of time. Changing the video quality and/or resolution seems to make no difference. I've also tried with 2 different video cards, an nvidia 9500gt, and my onboard ATI hd3200. This seems to make no difference either. Here is COHHelper data taken right after the latest crash.
