AAB must be brought back; failure to do so will result in...em... no more AAB. And that is a not very good thing, not at all.
Em... something like that. -
The problem I have with PvP is not to do with the mechanics but rather the motivation behind it. The only motivation appears to be that of having a harder challenge or plain just beating people.
I don't PvP so I don't understand or even know any pvp tactics. As far as my untrained eye can see it appears to be a case of jump around like a demented tigger and hit someone repeatedly until either he or you are dead. This doesn't appeal to me.
What would appeal to me is this; a better objective than just killing/arresting people. A capture the flag type game is what is currently appealing to me. Perhaps you have two teams (or even two SG's) who each have a base on their own instanced map (would have to be a big map though). In each base there is a power switch which would lower the bass shields and allow the orbital ray to destroy the base. Access to the orbital ray's controls are restricted until one or more teams defences are down. The defences automatically restart after a short period of time.
Your team has to guard your base while attempting to take down your opponents defenses. Should your defences be taken down do you try and stall your opponent preventing them from getting to the controls in time or do you split the team and attempt to destroy their base while all their focus is away from defence?
Ok this idea is hideously complicated and not well thought out having been spouted from the top of my head but it gives an idea of something I would rather do than just hit people... at least in PvE there is a story and a reason to hit people! -

We also have duplication of effort. Such as the Announcements, patch notes etc. This work could be reduced with a merging of the forums into one CoX forum, instead of the two seperate ones.
[/ QUOTE ]
The effort is not in the posting of patch notes on two forums (fora?) but rather the translation and localisation. Unless all support for the French and German communities is dropped completely then the same amount of work would still go into it. -
Mini hippo returns.

Well, at least it doesn't say merry christmas on the wrapping paper... -
Union.
I have precious few character concepts that keep me playing my characters and so far all of them have happened to be on union. I have a few characters on Defiant but none over level 15 I think. -

Not a lot of sense in this offer as you get a months free time if you buy the game,so why pay 6months subs in one go for the same free time.
[/ QUOTE ]
Because it is more free time?
I am failing to see your point, I am afraid. I already have the game, why should I buy it again? -
There is a 12 month sub on the EU? Last I checked that was only available in the US... has this changed?

I am late to this thread as I haven't really been on my computer for a week. My screen resolution is 1920 x 1200
Works great windowed mode, looks a bit silly when I try and full screen it... not that I ever really do that though, the windowed version works fine for me. -

I do have to work with kids though!

And we have to team with them at some point... Can't you petition a new lesson called "CoX 1 o 1"
[/ QUOTE ]
If I tried to deliver a lesson called CoX 101 then I doubt I would still be a teacher... -
I don't get to choose when I have a holiday. They are all dictated to us whether we want them then or not...

Wouldn't have to be PvP. They could organise a community event to force spawn Jack and Eochai and kill them.

Or take down Lusca.
Or, possibly something that the villains could get involved in too... -
That was phenomenal.
It really shows what this game is possible of achieving if enough people put the effort in to make something like that happen rather than stick to their own wee game (something I am often guilty of). -
Walks the earth is usually used in a horror or si-fi setting as a profound reveal that some mythical or otherworldly creature is alive and, literally, walking around on this planet.
Steve: 'The dead walk the earth!'
Jeoff: 'you mean zombies are real and shopping at tescos?'
Steve: 'Well, yes, but I was trying to be, you know, dramatic!' -
Although the forums seem to indicate otherwise I know that it is bushbaby's birthday today.
Happy Cakeday!
Have a good one. -

In a way I do agree, but can something that is fun not also have a material gain too?
[/ QUOTE ]
Sure, but I don't see the point of playing a game for "material gain", which is only monopoly money, if it is not fun, and the amount of fun is not proportional to the level of material gain.
[/ QUOTE ]
But can you not see the benefit of giving an additional incentive to re-playing that 'fun'.
When I first did the ITF I had an 'oh wow' moment. I will never get that 'oh wow' moment again because I have seen it and now expect it. The TF reward is a good added incentive for me to do it again. I could achieve similar amounts of fun joining a normal team but there is another reason to do this specific task again.
I think that we are both approaching this discussion from different points of view and there is some shared understanding missing. Somewhere in all this typing I think I have lost your point and I am not convinced you have understood mine either... -

In regards to the story arc merits.
How would it work if the merits were awarded between each story arc mission and not just one big lump at the end?
like, a arc that has 4 missions give 6 merits. That equals out at 1.5 merits/mission. so the 2 shortest mishes gives 1 merit while the 2 longer gives 2 each.
Awarded in this manner, anyone who joined anothers arc in progress or would have to leave just before the final mission wuold get the reward they're due for.
[/ QUOTE ]
I had considered this idea also but I came up with an easy exploit to take advantage of such a system, and if someone as simple as me can come up with one then there are sure to be people who can come up with an even better, quicker and easier one too.
[ QUOTE ]
Personally, I don't understand why anyone would do something in the game for any reason other than for fun.
[/ QUOTE ]
In a way I do agree, but can something that is fun not also have a material gain too? Or does getting such a sordid thing as a material gain spoil the fun?
[ QUOTE ]
I see in the US post linked above, that it is only the mission owner who currently gets the merits in the version on test.
[/ QUOTE ]
This worries me as it appears to discourage teaming. Why does the team leader deserve more reward than anyone else in the team (presuming of course that the team is doing the leaders missions; after all he/she gets to choose them). I enjoy pick up groups and this factor may make them more scarce as people may only want to do THEIR missions to achieve these arcs. The only way that this benefits all people in the team is if they all get the exact same story arc at exactly the same time and play through it all together. This may work for an established SG, but for someone who just wants to team casually...? Hmm. -

[ QUOTE ]
I would have assumed that if you complete a story arc as a team then everyone in the team would get a merit(s) in the same way that everyone in the team would get the badge for completing a certain mission.
[/ QUOTE ]
That would be truly awesome and would push casual teaming a lot imho but, although I don't have evidence of this not happening, can see it is difficult to implement, let's suppose a 10 mishes story arc, would everyone in team be rewarded merits per mish completion or at story arc's final mish? teams change a lot and getting reward if you are at last mish can be potentially abused.-.
[/ QUOTE ]
That is my only worry about this merit system. I doubt that they are foolish enough to just reward everyone on the team with a set amount of merits just for participating in the final mission of the arc as that could lead to obvious exploits.
Similarly I worry that the merits will only be awarded to the arc owner as this COULD destroy PUG's.
I applaud any idea which encourages teams to actually do story arcs rather than repeating radio missions but if it leads to a decision on whether to join someone else so that they can earn merits while you earn none or soloing... I suspect that many people would choose to solo in order that they get the merit rewards.
I trust that the devs have considered this implication and have come up with a far better way of coping with it than I could. -

What Im getting around to saying in my normal, verbose, way is that a lot of whats mentioned both here and in the other threads sounds like maths professors discussing the 35th digit of Pi.

Now, I am no maths professor but... the 35th decimal place is 8... what more is there to discuss?

what? -
Ooh, thankyou for that.
Reading these replies and the talk about the further changes for APP/PPP (if I understand this new change correctly) I am now much happier! -
My take on the things about I13 I have happened to read;
Merits; I am extremely happy with this (with the corrollary that I have yet to actually TRY the system, so perhaps I should say I like the IDEA)
New Powersets; Love new powersets, will definitely be trying them out.
New costumes; Always happy with new costumes (again, I have to say I haven't actually seen them myself)
Day Jobs; a nice touch, not something I am particularly excited about, but a pleasant addition to the back story of my characters. Anything that makes me think about my characters as more than just a means for gaining xp is welcomed by me.
APP/PPP changes; This is the first feature announced that has ever made me go, 'I don't like that'. ED? No bother; GDN? don't care. Some of these changes however... hmmm.
PvP changes; although I don't personally PvP from what I have read I can't imagine it to be working as intended. Of course this impression is taken from second hand accounts rather than personal experience so perhaps it will, with time, come to be understood more and accepted as a good thing but for the moment it has made me even less likely to join in with PvP.
Bases; The reduction in cost of various items is a fabulous thing however I hear that teleporters will need Hamidon Goo to create which indirectly makes them much more expensive and will likely prevent me from making a larger base, something I would dearly like to do.
Overall a mixed bunch of good and bad impressions although I think the good does outweigh the... less than good. Of course, others may well give these different issues greater or lesser weights. -
