A quick question here...where did the 5 zone info come from? All of the information I've read/heard has said "several new zones" with no specific number. If you've got a source for that it would be appreciated so that someone can update the wiki and info posts.

The problem isn't with saying that Closed Beta is going on....if you mention that you're in it, then you have a problem, but merely mentioning that it's going on is public knowledge.

If the former, it should tell you directly what it wants from you in terms of cost, and something has gone a bit haywire. However, it is part of the normal account activation procedure for every MMO I've encountered to ask for payment info of some sort - it won't actually be charged anything until the free time packaged with the game expires, unless you cancel it by then, as you are free to do.
This is what it should be doing. If you input CC info it won't charge you until your free month is up. The other alternative is adding a timecard (prepaid time) to the account.

Do you have an ATI video card, by any chance? The ATI video cards can produce those water effects independent of the game or its settings. Ultra Mode will also involve the addition of other things, such as ambient occlusion which will change the look of the game. There are some screenies on this page that illustrate the differences.

Yep. I thought I had messed that up so I checked and double checked. Oddly now the shortcut removed the -test later on. Is this normal?

    - dark -
I know that it's normal for it to remove the -test flag after install on Win 7...it's been long enough since I installed on XP that I don't remember if it does it there, but it's certainly possible.
  7. I've got the Test client working on Win 7 without any issues. What I did was create another shortcut to the regular client updater on my desktop, then right click to change the Properties and added -test at the end of the target line (after the quotes containing the file path. Then I double clicked it, selected my install location and (in my case, because I had a pre-existing folder for it) allowed it to verify files and patch. Now, I did notice during this process that it deleted my modified shortcut and put a fresh shortcut to the regular installation on the desktop. So I opened this new shortcut, added the -test switch at the end of the Target line again, and I was good to go.

Now, depending on the way your UAC is set you may also have to go to the Compatability tab in Properties and check off "Run this program as an administrator". Do not, however, run it in compatability mode.

    Hope this helps!

Edit: To make the shortcut I went into the installation folder for my regular installation, right clicked on the updater and selected "Send To" and then "Desktop (create shortcut)"

The timecards that appear to be Aion-only branded actually aren't...they're regular NC timecards with new packaging to promote Aion. They still have the logos for CoH and Lineage II in the corners, with Statesman and one of the Lineage signature characters on the front, and can most definitely be used for CoH like any other timecard. And, if you manage to run across one of the old game-specific timecards, those can also be used for CoH. When NC moved to the univeral timecard system they made the serial numbers for the old game-specific cards valid for all their other games as well.

    Nvidia drivers

I'm currently using the 191.07 drivers under Win 7 with no problems. I didn't really see any noticable performance increase going up from the 186.xx drivers though. Don't go with the most recent two sets of drivers, they definitely cause some issues with CoH.

You can use the Visa Gift Cards to pay for time (I'm in Ontario, so I'm sure). My roommate and I have often used them when our little local game stores are out of timecards (though they haven't been out since the release of Aion, even our Walmart stocks them now). Yes, you can't set it up for recurring monthly, but there's an option for one-time payments for time that work perfectly well with the Gift Cards.

  12. Well, it says they've made one post, and then when you click the "Find all posts by..." link, it gives you no posts. Posting in a hidden forum maybe? A new type of forum mod seems possible...
  13. Hmmm...you may want to download Speedfan or a similar heat monitoring program and check the heat of your card. My roommate started having similar issues with his card, just playing City mind you, before we replaced the fans in his case. I'm not saying that it has to be heat, but it's something worth checking before you go out and buy a new card. Heat can produce some odd errors out of the nVidia cards.

be sure to run a drvier cleaner of some sort
I can also confirm that the 191.07 drivers are stable under Win 7 64-bit, I've been running those for a while as well.
  15. Congrats to all those promoted! The game is in great hands, and it's exciting to hear that Posi's working on something that has so much potential!

Yes, but we weren't sure if (or how big) this new end game would be. Them using the term "End Game system" implies something big. After all, you don't just throw the word "system" onto something small. Honestly, you may not be happy with the fact that the information we got today was a tidbit, but isn't that what you've been asking to get for weeks? A tidbit to "keep you interested"? Well, you have a potentially large tidbit to speculate over, with the promise of more coming, as well as a reason for why we haven't heard much. Be a little happier with what you have for a change, instead of complaining that it's not (and probably never will be) enough.

This. Alpha testers are all employed, in one capacity or another, by Paragon Studios. Friends and family of employees are not themselves employed by Paragon, so are not Alpha testers.

It's possible that the early stages may have been, but I can tell you for sure that by the time they got to the pre-order stage of Closed for CoV it definitely wasn't. That was the point that I started playing CoH/V, and I quite clearly remember the friend that got me into the game guiding me through setting up Test, which I've done on every one of my systems since.

Is this something that was mentioned at HeroCon? This isn't in the HeroCon information post, and it certainly the first I've heard of it. It would be a little odd if they did that, considering that's what the Test server is for.

If there is an Alpha going on, it's got to be internal. When they get to the point where any of us gets to play it, or even the "Friends and Family closed beta" stage, it gets put up on Test...and it's definitely not up there yet. So the only ones that know what's happening with it at this point are developers, paid testers, and other employees of Paragon Studios (and possibly a 3rd party testing company, I don't know if they include that in internal testing as some companies do). So if you're refering to anyone in the player base knowing, it's highly unlikely.
  20. Unfortunately, this thread is not something any of the devs are likely to stumble over on their own. If you want to be sure that the right people see it, you should bring this issue to the attention of Arbiter Kim, who is the red name in charge of bug hunting. The best way would be to either PM him an explanation of the bug, or point him towards this thread.
  21. Unfortunately, any mention about getting info this week was player speculation. There will probably be plenty of people that say the same thing about next week *shrugs* the devs haven't announced any sort of timeline on getting us info, though one can hope that we would get some in Q1 because that's when they're hoping to get the closed beta going. Again though, that's not really a timeline. If they feel the need to push it back, they will.
  22. That's really something you should probably decide for yourself. We have no information about outside factors that may influence your situation, such as finances. Personally, when I took my break I kept my account active. Having the extra vet time was a bonus, as was being able to hop on occassionally when I was just in a butt-kicking or base-building mood.

I'm thinking that if they did consider going this route most of the burden of that cost would go to Aion, rather than Paragon and CoH. At that point, it may be a little easier for our devs to integrate its use into our game if it's something that NC puts in anyways for Aion and GW.

Yup, we sure at in Q1. And it will continue to be Q1 for another two and a half months! Honestly, I wish people would give them a little leeway. They've been back from their winter vacation for all of a week, and the year is still very new. While they are aiming for a Q1 beta, that could be anywhere between now and the end of March. I'm almost wishing they hadn't mentioned any sort of timeline, however vague it is, so we wouldn't have people demanding "It's Q1, where's my info? OMG DOOOM!" We'll get info in due time. Personally, I'd rather get the information when they're sure the feature they're discussing isn't going to change any more, and that won't be until well into the beta.

And, back on topic, as much as I wish for moving hair, I can certainly see why they haven't with the kind of performance issues it would cause. If I got tails with belts, I would certainly be happy with just that (though I'm not going to be disappointed if we don't get it, it is a bonus after all).
