I felt you first post was overly preachy and more of a peeve than actual advice; regardless of how you intended it to sound. This latest one though, this is just silly. Almost nothing in the game world is accurate or realistic, and trying to pin down a whole genre of character concepts to fit your conceptions of what they should be based on your own limited interpretation of a narrow real-world field is just over the top. People's characters are inspired by a long tradition of comic literature and lore that is evidently beyond you.

Excuse me now, my character needs to go pick up a cache of enriched plutonium one of these street thugs happened across, and I need to get it done between dawn and dusk, which as you know is a fifteen minute window. It's okay though, since I run at 60 miles per hour, even while wearing a ridiculous costume. Mostly I worry about gunfire from snipers on local buildings, but since bullets only travel a hundred feet or so, and rarely break skin when they hit, I think I'll make it.
Remind me to ignore you from here on out, as you openly attack me and stand on your own soapbox. Have a good one.

This was intended for discussion, and the name of the thread is "My opinions" perhaps that was too vague for you? Maybe I might need to dumb the title down for you to understand it?
  2. Artificial Intelligence and Cybernetics

    1. A.I.

Measuring A.I. growth potential and computing power in form that allows people to come to an understanding of how quote "powerful" an A.I. is or how "Capable" it is of understanding humans is something I've worked on for a long time. If we attempt to put this all in actual mathematical terms we have the following,

Ray Kurzweil, author of book known as "
The Singularity is Near", one of many people who have done this, has a guesstimation as to the computing power of the human brain. This guess, is around 20 petaFLOPS, or 20 Quadrillion FLOPS.

What is a "FLOPS" you ask? "Floating-point Operations / Second" or a measure of computing performance. And why is this important to us in regards to A.I computational power?

Well simply put this is a "benchmark" of computational power, aka for an A.I to be capable of "near-human" thought and or self awareness, it must be able to process information at roughly the same speed as a human being, if not more so.

The current world record for "FLOPS" is held by the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folding@Home "Folding at Home" project. Which is around 4-5 petaFLOPS. Meaning in our current time, we have a super computing cluster capable of 1/4 the computing power of the human brain.

So take this into account when creating your A.I, and it's age. But also take into account the rate of technological growth with-in city of heroes. As well as "Moore's law" which states that computational power doubles every 18 months, and "The law of accelerating averages" which actually proves that technology is growing faster then Moore's law states. As we've achieved greater computational power milestones in less time then each previous milestone. Meaning that each time we double in computational power, the time to the next doubling shortens.

So, bunch of rambling now you're thinking right? Well yeah, but it's all important if you want to be as accurate and realistic as you can be with A.I.

So, onward and upward in the conversation at hand. We know that the human brain operates at or around 20 petaFLOPS, if we take on board all the science mumbojumbo people are tossing around then we use this as a means of showing just how powerful an A.I. needs to be to reach that point.

Hopefully people are following me so far, but more is coming!

This is funny, seeing as I don't have a Cat Girl character at all. But now that you mention it, I might go make one now out of sheer giggles.

I've got more coming and what you read into what I write is your prerogative, but you're still wrong. To many people are infact ignoring the prime lore of CoX and or misusing said prime lore because they don't understand it entirely. I just had someone come to me for help two days ago in setting up a back story for her widow, because she doesn't know the Lore. Anthro-form is just what I choose to look at first, mainly because there is such a divide on it.

If you want to read that, "i haz cat gurl and she got hated on, wah!" then well, that's your right. Anyway, more coming tomorrow. Have fun!

  5. So it's become apparent to me that there's a rather large issue on Virtue, and that's people who missunderstand the actual lore behind City of Heroes and missuse certain things with in the Lore to create a backstory. So, below are my opinions on specific origins and how to use them to create your own back-story that people can bite in to.

    Genetic Manipulation and Mutation
1: Genetic manipulation is something of a standard in super hero comic books and role-playing games. There are a few distinct back stories that one can use to come up with a unique character. How ever the first form of genetic manipulation, which is the use of animal genetic materiel infusion to enhance soldiers and regular humans, which is something that has existed in several comics, stories, and games..seems to carry a lot of negative intonation on Virtue.

I blame this on the ERP crowd, and those that create anthro-form characters with no real background other than, "I is catgurl" and other examples.

Proper usage of this can create unique characters, and there is even a Signature "Cat-gurl" hero in the CoX prime lore.

    Located here: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Mynx

Mynx, volunteered for a Crey Industries research program which logic would dictate was a genetech research program designed to infuse animal DNA into a target recipient and thus create an anthropic-form with a human appearance and animal traits. Myx is the only example at current, but that does not discount the usage of Genetic Manipulation to create anthro-form individuals with increased strength, speed, reflexes and heightened senses as a valid background.

As a note: There have been some instances in the D lately where people have a distinct hate for anthro-form humaniods. There is a difference between this and the Furry, but regardless, I really hope people can grow up just a little and have a little more maturity and respect for peoples chosen play-styles and character preferences. While I myself might have an issue with the ERP crowd, or those that make anthro-form characters with (in my personal opinion) crappy back-stories, I will not walk up to said person and tell them how much they suck, or that they should not be playing the character. As I respect their personal preference and chosen play-style.

Coming up next: Undesired Mutation as a Back Story, followed by High Technology Backstories, such as Artificial Intelligence and finally Time Travel and Dimensional travel.

Also, as a further note...Anthropomorphism, is something that has existed in human society since ancient Egypt and before, Aesop's fables Anthropomorphizes the north wind. Do not think that Anthropomorphism is linked solely to humanoid animal like creatures. This would be ignorant of the truth of the real definition Anthropomorphism.

I've actually challenged a few people to arena fights and they never want to, they always back down and say "No, we'll (text) fight right here so I can win and god mode" well, that last part was added by me, but you get the point.

    Read that again.

Your "hero" beats the snot out of a bunch of innocent people who have been exposed to something that essentially mind controls them into being aggressive via violent and terrifying hallucinations, innocent people who badly need medical care.

It gets even more entertaining when you realize that (later) you mug crazy homeless people who have been infected with an alien virus which mutates them into being monsters for samples of their blood, so that you can make an experimental magic wand and then test that wand's magic on them to see if it will cure their infection.

Do note that if you use the magic wand on one of the Lost, that the other Lost around the newly cured immediately start attacking it.

And this is just the first two examples that come to mind. Would you like more?

There is certainly an epic battle of good and evil. However, I suspect that our "heroes" aren't on the side that they think they are.
I really actually have to agree with Sun here. This puts our "Heroes" in a whole new light when we look at things from a different perspective. Would a true "hero" act this why? Or would he or she find another way to fix these situations?
  8. Apologies...the title should read,

In want of Discussion, about RP.

  9. As my first "rant" post elsewhere on this board put me in a rather bad light, I've decided that I actually want to sit down and ask the community proper for a discussion based on "Roleplay" mainly with some things that bother me on Virtue. Now this post is not a rant, and I will endevour to keep it this way, I'm going to ask some questions and respond with what I think and look to you guys for your input.

A little about me before I start,

I do not consider myself a "Leet" player by any stretch of the imagination. I've been playing off and on since 2005 with one of two account. One of which is long gone and the current one only has one level 50. Along with a ton of 20 somethings, but hey that's what I get for playing to many games.

This want for discussion started due to me being really active in roleplaying again on Virtue, thankfully I've made friends, joined groups and had the privilege of roleplaying with some fantastic people. People that have forced me to step up and practice and really work on creating lasting and memorable characters. So shall we on with the actual discussion then?

    First things First.

    Pocket D
In the Lore for Pocket D, DJ Zero is a rather powerful mutant that can create tunnels and bends in space time. He uses his power to maintain pocket D and has gone to great lengths to keep it a neutral ground. Now here in lies the rub that irritates me so..

    Fights in the D...

    My opinion on this,

There is a power suppression field in affect here, and as this is DJ Zero's world/dimension/time-space it revolves around his rules, he is literally "God" here. You can do all the god modding you want, all the "I'm super powerful!" that you wish and it still falls flat on it's face. You are never going to out power the person who created the Dimension you are standing in, ever. "I'm an Incarante!" so what? DJ Zero is god here.

    My question to you,

Is a rather simple one, what do you guys think? Do you think "So what, let them rp fighting, maybe Zero likes a laugh?" or "I agree with you on this one, this crap is annoying."

    Number two.

The "I don't take level into account" Bio post..*grumbles* My first response to this is usually, "The I don't take your existence into account." Now I understand to most that this might seem a little harsh, but to me this paves the way to all manner of Power-posing and God-modding. When a lvl 1 brand new character can walk up to a fully IO'ed LvL 50 Incarnate and seriously say "I can kick your ***" it breaks things a bit for me.

I feel there has to be a foundation to work off of, I do not play my lvl 50 fire blaster the same at 50 as I did at lvl 1. At lvl 1 she was unsure of herself, new to the world, learning. At lvl 50 her powers and experience have grown leaps and bounds. She's no longer unsure of herself and takes part in situations that affect all of Paragon City. Should you solely take level into account? No, but it needs to be a foundation of some small sort in my opinion.

I know some people build the character before they place in the power sets, but I find it easier to relate to a character that has grown from the allowances of the game itself. A fire/fire blaster would grow differently for me at least, then a cold/cold one. So I'll leave this one here for more discussion as well.

    Number 3.

The "I have powers that don't exist in the game" Bio quotes. Another source of frustration and grumbles for me, and yes I know by now you're probably saying "Stop being such a rules lawyering jackass and remove the stick from your rear." But seriously, does this bother no one? When someone you roleplay with says they have a power you can't visualize it breaks the immersion and understanding of the character, unless they are really really good at explaining it. This I pose an actual question for..

Do you, or do you not RP with people that have powers listed in their bio that do not exist in the game?

    Number 4.

Last but not least in my wall-o-text post here is the one uppers. The "I'm immune to Psychics" types and the "I can see through your stealth" types. Those people that have to one up everything you can do and make you're character an ant in comparison to them..

This attitude annoys me to no end and I'd like to know how others deal with it. I've got more questions but I'll stop with this for now, and I hope we can actually have a conversation about these bullet points. I would honestly like to know others opinions and how they handle these situations.

  12. You guys really are an entitled lot aren't you? This is not your game, it's their game and we pay to play it. If the dev's actually had to run everything by the playerbase every time with "You guys ok with this? May we do it?" nothing would ever happen or change.

Let the guys do what they do best and if you don't like the changes, sure you can voice that opinion but other then that, get over it.
  13. With this thread,

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=266729

I got an idea sort of along the lines of the "hot or not" website. What I'm thinking and proposing is the creation of a new City of X Fan Website that allows
people to upload their NPC design pictures and then lets people vote on them so we can get the community's most loved re-designs to the Devs in hopes they use these redesigns as they have done before.

Example: The two vendors in Oro, they were crap when they first came out and one lucky SoB rebuilt them, posted the costume code, and people loved it and BOOM! The dev's used it and re-made the NPC's.

So, anyone like to help with this? Maybe it could be a wiki-type site, I'm not sure.

I know this is an old argument, but it seems in the new post incarnate enviroment its worse than ever.
This is thee first time I've really wanted to post on these forums, it may not be the last. My main is a tri-fire blaster that I play a lot. The whole "blasters spend more time face planted" is due to people not knowing how to play them. My build has hover, weave, and tough in it for a reason as I can keep these toggles on and still blast away all day.

Blasters are the glass cannons of CoX we are designed to do the most damage, and the trade off to that is low HP. Is our HP too low? Some would argue yes, but I'm happy with where we are.

Last time I checked CoX was a game about freedom of choice, just because someone says "Such and Such power combo on such and such AT is garbage" doesn't mean you have to listen to them. Play what you want, how you want, when you want and if people give you guff tell them to shove off.

As for your "no blasters allowed" TF..boy howdy, you go ahead and do that and see how much longer it takes you to kill things.
  16. Thanks Psion, got MIDS and I've been playing with it. So far I'm lvl 38 now, and I', only slotting SO's at the moment, figured I don't need to worry about IO's till 50.
  17. Ok, good a place as any to start is at the begining. I started playing CoH back in Apr of '05. I've played on and off again, for about 2.5 years since, getting to the 30 month vet badge. My main problem is, I've never had a chance to be in good SG's or a cance to meet and talk with oher blasters and so far, even still I have questions about my favorite character and power combo.

Currently, she's lvl 33, and I'm fire/fire. If you see Electra Sun on Virtue, that's me.

So here's he big question, with ED, and the way I have my cahracter build I'm getting tired of people telling me, "slot 2 acc, 2 dmg, 1 end reduction and 1 recharge reduc in EVERYTHING." Ok, WHY? Why is that the end all be all, works for everything, one size fits all way of doing it?

Don't just say, "Do it because I say it's good" prove to me.

I want to know if other blasters slot like I'm thinking we should, if you have a quick recharge power, why the heck put a recharge reduction in it? It's already fast....

If you have a high end cost power, why not slot 2-3 end reducers in it? +dmg/acc?

My point and question is this,

Why is it not a good idea to slot powers to work against weaknesses inherent in those powers? Why is there this cooker cutter, works for everyone way of slotting?
