I've actually started subscribing to both World of Warcraft and Champions Online (although I'll probably drop one or the other after next month) just so I have something to scratch that MMO itch during maintenance.
It does get irritating sometimes, but I figure the forums have enough negativity without my harping on the matter. I do find some small pleasure in responding to those sarcastic "oh, I wish I didn't have to work so I could play CoH/V during maintenance times" posts with "unless you're in a different time zone, of course". The sarcasm tends to evaporate for a while after that. -
Quote:Close: I mentioned poster registration date, which makes the argument more "if post count and poster history don't matter, then neither should reputation", with the assumption on my part that poster registration date is directly linked to poster history.I already explained this.
It sounds like you're taking issue with the arguments in the past that post counts don't matter in order to make a false analogy that "if post count doesn't matter, then neither should reputation." This is a meta argument I'm not going to have with you. The premise is not just flawed, but utterly broken.
The premise may be utterly broken, but since I don't know why, I'm just going to file it away as "agree to disagree" until it's brought back out to be rehashed.
The point of all this is that yes, you may be partly the reason for the "Forum Cartel" title, but I don't see what bearing it has on anything other than an academic study of the history of the forum. The original negative rep comment "Look, if you like WoW so much, go play that and stop trolling our boards" is indeed rude and in my opinion uncalled for, but the response you gave in public here of "Does no one remember their history?" implies to me that you expect this history to be self-evident without elaboration on how it applies to the argument at hand.
You did mention that these are not "your" forums, just as it is not "their" forums. I interpreted this as saying that these forums are somehow "more" yours than theirs, because you named the 10k posts title. Which, since postcounts are supposed to be irrelevant, makes it seem like an odd justification. -
Quote:Which doesn't really prove much. Certainly not to the point of the question "Does no one remember their history?" What history is this in particular, and why should it matter?Post counts are irrelevant, as are registration dates. On the other hand, poster reputation shouldn't be.
However, being as I'm partly responsible for what happens to your title when you hit 10k posts, I kinda think that someone telling me to get out of their forum is more than a bit hysterical.
Not that it's my forum, either, but you know, at least I left my mark. -

I think I'm going to have to start learning even more timezone conversions.
What's AEST as applied to GMT? -
Hold! What you are doing is wrong! Why do you do this thing?

Quote:What, really? What criteria for "good" are you using?About the only good use of twitter I've seen is Othar's Twitter.

There was quite a lot of rage over the GDN in Issue 5 as well, which tends to get conflated with the rage over ED in Issue 6. While I do admit I haven't seen anything quite as bad as those (I wasn't around during the Smoke Grenade thing), I have no desire to break that record.

Quote:Back Alley Brawler seems to think so.Any idea if those not in beta will be able to log into the CC as in prior closed betas? No need to point out how much goodness is in the foyer this time 'round.
EDIT: Dammit, Zikar. -
Quote:People with zero rep either way have a lighter grey than people who have turned off their rep.The amount of rep you can give to others (both negative and positive) is based on the rep that you have. A grey means that the person has either turned off THEIR rep, or the person has no rep at all, and so their rep counts for very little.
I could be wrong though, and it could just mean their rep is turned off, but I THINK it also applies for people with zero rep either way.
Unfortunately I don't have an example screenshotted or some such. -

Every time I bring out my Mastermind Bdaly Spleled I feel a little tingle of satisfaction.

I just noticed that this thread is tagged "aebies raetarded" (sic). Why is this?

Quote:I think it was the one at the beginning of the first game. The one which went something like "oh, We appear to have been on a drunken bender, and We broke the stars... but it felt s-o g-o-o-d. *heart*"This sounds awesome, and I'm kinda curious which monologue it was.
Well, I laughed.
Reading through the posts about the new forums and the rep system, I've noticed that the people who would have otherwise gotten a lot of negative rep (mainly through being less than polite when posting) have already disabled theirs, so anyone with actual negative rep is likely not actually a bad poster, but has just been neg-repped for no real reason. -
Quote:This is actually one of the vague suspicions I have about the whole "new forum account is current game account" thing. And even though its a small thing, I like your personal page too. Who knows maybe we will see the City Vault with the new forums
A runner-up for awesome forum feature for me would be a much easier way to obtain the link for individual posts. -
I remember on the old forums that at least part of why the forums loaded slowly was because twice an hour (once at 17 minutes past the hour, the other time I forget) the dev and community digests get updated. So if you happened to be clicking on a link then, you'll get a time-out error if you're unlucky.
I haven't encountered anything like that on these new forums, but it could just be luck. -
All this discussion about the rep system reminds me of the old User Star system, and what happened when CuppaJo disabled it.
For the most part the move was greeted with approval or indifference (mostly indifference), but the explanation of where the user stars went was basically Cuppa posting a monologue from Katamari Damacy verbatim. Which promptly got criticized for being too "flippant", making Cuppa have to apologize.
I still don't know what to think about that, but I am curious if we'll be seeing something similar happen for the rep system if it gets removed. -
"Post is devoid of meaningful communication", perhaps? I see it as akin to reporting a glitched blank/empty post: the poster wanted to say something, but circumstances prevented them from communicating the message effectively. They are always free to try again; meanwhile, the mods can clear away the deadwood.

Yeah, on the other forum with a reputation point system I go to, the reps are anonymous. I usually sign off with my nick as a courtesy; on a possibly related note, I've also always given only positive reps. People I'd give negative reps to are usually those who would end up on my ignore list anyway.

I've seen several. Usually they start something like "judging by your post count", and depending on what that post count actually is, may branch into "you need a life" or "you're too new to know what you're talking about".
