Quote:Post on Forum: "Hey, I haven't played this game for a long time, since Issue (some low number). What's different?"But again, singular reasons like that just confound me. You log into a game you haven't played in a long time. What do you expect to see? Me, I'd expect to see all the things I recognise. Where does this expectation that everything will be different come from?
Forum replies: "Everything! It's like a brand new game!"
I think that is a part of it, at least. -
Quote:When I get that One Single Thing response from people, I find, after further questioning, that it's because it's the first thing that came to mind, and they actually had more complaints. You know, I hear this from time to time, and it's the sort of thing that makes me want to punch people. This overfocusing on one specific aspect of the game just gets under my skin. When I hate something (and it takes quite a bit for me to HATE it), I have a whole laundry list of things to hate bout it. But just that one thing? You'd think the entire game were nothing BUT looking at the inside of an instance, ignoring the fact that there are enemies in it, that you can make your own characters with your own look and your own power selection. No. None of that matters. I want to look at different interiors. Ugh...
They just mention that one thing because they assume I'm not the sort to drop whatever I'm doing at the moment just to, as it were, explore the conversation tree for as many Codex Entries as I can find. -
He's not in any dire financial straits; he can afford fifteen US dollars a month, and probably the GR Complete Collection purchase. (If he buys now, likely he'll get the Architect Edition on Steam.) I asked him about this specifically.
It's just that he's a lot more fiscally responsible than I am; he's not going to pay anything above a couple of Singapore dollars (works out to be one dollar twenty cents or something US?) sight unseen. He's not miserly, just cautious; if he likes it, he'll buy it.
He also just bought a PS3 and FFXIII, so he's wary about spending big lump sums of money in the immediate future.
Anyway, based on responses in this thread, I'll probably tell him to wait until Ultra Mode is in, and then see what he says about it. -
I may be misrepresenting him unintentionally.
All these questions he's asking me are not because he's "hemming and hawing". It's because he knows almost nothing about City of Heroes.
For example, he didn't know that CoH and CoV are now available to all players. He didn't know about customization. He didn't know how combat even works in CoH.
This is because there is nothing available about CoH here by way of advertising. Store presence is limited to old copies of the CoV box. (Not GvE or anything; CoV.) Up until I mentioned CoH to him, he had no reason to even think about the game.
Now that he knows about the game, he wants to know about it, before committing bandwidth and time to downloading the client. Hence all the questions. -
Quote:Interestingly, I'm also working on that. He's not the sort to participate in the forum communities. (He's a very prolific blogger, though.) I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to convince him about the community as well. And for so many people, the community is as much of a draw as the game itself. And the community is here, Now - why not jump in and experience "us" as we are now, before we get a flood of clueless newbs with the upcoming updates?
Saying "it's one of the better ones" doesn't mean much when he doesn't bother with any.
As Westley mentioned, I'm also afraid of pushing too hard.
This must be what Marketing feels like. -
Quote:Emphasis added. You shouldn't have told him that. Read Posi's edited post for Ultra Mode cards here
If the 5770 is doing excellent, and they expect the 5870 to be one of the fastest, then the 5850 is probably going to be more than satisfactory. -
Quote:I don't know. The thing is that up until recently, he has said "no".Still too early? This game has been around for over five years. There's over five years worth of content he can go through... if he just doesn't want to play CoH, he won't play it.
And to me, it sounds like he just doesn't want to be convinced and is making up excuses when he just doesn't want to.
Sometimes people just need to learn to say "no".
Now, he's saying "maybe".
Boiled down, what I'm asking is this: should I push him to try out CoH now, after Issue 17, or after Going Rogue?
Because now he's interested, but the stuff that would interest him more is in I17, and the stuff that is even more interesting is in Going Rogue, but he'd like to see these interesting things in action first (in general, not just I17/GR) before committing.
And I was thinking that this may or may not be a common situation we face when trying to convince others to play CoH.
EDIT: To clarify, yes, this game has been around for over five years, but Ultra Mode and Going Rogue are not out yet.
What he said is interesting to him are the bits and pieces that have been released about UM and GR. I would think that if he plays the game now he'll find other things to interest him, but that's only a possibility. The actual "hey, these look good" bits are not in the game for him yet, and he (and I) are generally not convinced with the "jam tomorrow" promise. -

Firstly, whatever powerset I haven't tried before, and which I know can be soloed easily. I usually come up with the concept from there. Last time it was concept first, but after a string of characters I quickly got bored with, I found I did better when I made up silly puns and injokes for characters.
For individual powers, apart from the Absolute Essentials, whatever I think I'll need later. I've noticed that when I try to ask for advice, the power I end up picking based on that doesn't fit my playstyle. However, picking what I think I'll need later is not a spur-of-the-moment thing either; often I have to wait five to ten levels before I can actually choose that power, since there are so many others I wanted to pick first. -
Quote:What he'd really like is a game that he can talk about with the rest of us. CoH is not that game, because, as mentioned, I'm the only one playing it.It depends on what matters to him as far as the game goes. If graphics is really that important, then wait until i17 and Ultra Mode, then everything else will be gravy one he gets used to the game.
Failing that, he's interested in the customization, which may allow him to feel "cool" when playing. The more customization, the better... except he expressed the most interest in Dual Pistols customization. And then there are the Veteran Reward costume pieces...
Side-switching is actually part of that: he wants the option to switch if need be, such as playing a hero Mastermind. Based, again, on customization.
I suspect that he wanted newer graphics because of his new ATI 4850 card. I did tell him that it probably wouldn't be able to render Ultra Mode in its entirety, based on the recommended specs. But he did say he was not impressed with the current CoH graphics. (Yes, I know WoW graphics aren't all that amazing either, but that game has many other advantages for him.)
The whole superhero thing is irrelevant to him. (And me.) He's a reader of superhero comics; I hesitate to call him a fan because he enjoys complaining about the terrible plot decisions in the DC or Marvel lines. But since CoH is not based on either DC or Marvel, the superhero thing doesn't matter. (The ability to play out an anime-esque character, however, does. Hence customization.) -
Technically, this being Rikti, it's still not zero-risk for people with stealth: Rikti Drones are kind of annoying like that.
One of the reasons that mission is problematic in my viewpoint is that there is no real way, without prior knowledge, to know that you'll need stealth. Or, and I've accomplished the mission like this on my non-stealth characters, using a travel power to sort of exploit the NPC AI: they might notice you, but they won't actually attack for a few seconds.
A temporary stealth power would be very useful for that mission, and still keep the idea of not attacking the critters. I don't know why one is not offered (or at least hasn't been offered the last time I did the mission). After all, there's a mission villainside which sends you into St. Martial to deliver something when you're below that level, but gives you a Phase Shift temp power to accomplish that task. -
Recently I was trying to convince a friend of mine to try out City of Heroes. Normally he wouldn't even consider paying a monthly subscription fee, but another friend was lured into World of Warcraft (so much that the rest of us are seriously considering some sort of intervention), and for some reason this made him receptive to the idea of fifteen US dollars a month (working out to be over twenty Singapore dollars).
I don't know, it's some sort of socio-psychological thing.
There was some iffy-ness about the restrictions on trial accounts. I don't agree with the implementations, but I understand why they were put in place regarding the whole RMT spam thing. It's not a very good introduction to the game for a new player, though. In fact, it's pretty terrible.
One thing he seemed interested in was the weapon customizations, specifically for Dual Pistols. Are those available for all players, he wondered.
Only with the expansion pack pre-purchase, I answered. In other words, he'd have to buy the game, then buy (or pre-buy) the expansion pack. Remember the exchange rate between US and Singapore dollars: even if the actual price is objectively the same, there's this odd psychological reaction to seeing the bigger numbers. (Also I think the relative cost of living is slightly different, and the price comparisons are usually with local examples.)
He was willing to at least consider it, in any case. But the hurdle of getting the game just got higher.
"What about side-switching?" he asked. (I'd previously explained that despite the game being City of Heroes, he'd also have access to City of Villains.) I told him it was coming with the expansion, but no amount of pre-purchasing would make it arrive sooner.
"What about the graphics?" he asked. "They look kind of old." I told him about Ultra Mode.
His response: "So why should I get the game now when there's all these good things coming soon? Why not get it later?"
Why indeed? Extending that argument, since CoH is an actively-developed MMOG, there will always be good things coming soon. Should there be a point where a prospective player goes "this is where I will jump in and play"? Why should this point be right now?
As the person trying to convince him to join this game, I think it has to be now, or at least very soon, because there's competition. He's interested in CoH now; he might not be as interested by the time Ultra Mode comes around. I'm not the only friend trying to convince him to play a MMOG; the aforementioned WoW friend is also dangling a buddy trial offer.
(Tangentially, I'm the only one in my group of friends, and indeed among anyone I know, who plays CoH. Whereas it seems like everyone who has ever paid a monthly subscription fee for a MMOG before has played WoW, currently or lapsed, including me. There's an obvious shared topic of conversational options here.)
Should I push my friend harder to try CoH right now, while he's still interested? Should I wait until Ultra Mode or Going Rogue, when his interest may have cooled? Or should I not push at all, and simply leave CoH open as an option, passively waiting?
Has anyone encountered this sort of problem before? -

UPDATE: Response arrived within two days, stating that they were escalating the issue. Today, I received an email stating that they fixed it, and I'm eligible for the 63-month award.
That means City Traveller, and the Reveal Map power.
*dances*
Thanks to GM Roland. And thanks to everyone for their advice. -
Quote:In my case, it's because I'm so familiar with the tilesets that I know where the spawns are. Which means I know when to just rush along, and when to be careful about something around the corner. This lets me gain the rewards for defeating enemies more efficiently; it's not something that I approve of actively, but since I've got the knowledge, might as well use it.Why is it that I feel that the same old tilesets never bothered me?
Perhaps I'm just hard to bore?
And I know that new tilesets would get old soon enough too, so I don't ask for much.
The tilesets bore me, but they don't bother me per se. I'd be happy to see some new ones, but there's always the possibility of getting another layer cake cave room or Oranbega. -
Quote:Unfortunately I already used the in-game petition, since that's the advice I was given when I raised the issue in global channels.Pro tip: Use the Ask a Question feature in the NCSoft account page (not an in-game petition). I've had to petition for a vet badge the last two times, and both times I went directly through NCSoft and got it taken care of in a day or two. Since that's where you see your calculated time, it would make more sense to involve the people you're actually sending money to, and not the folks that make the game.
If I use the Ask A Question feature, would it create a duplicate ticket? -
Quote:This, pretty much.Generally when I see option A, it's advertised as Level 50 only ITF, and they stress the fact that it's level 50s only. So that sentence by itself I would assume as Option B.
However, I would also assume that the leader has gathered a group of 50s to start with, and would expect to run it without worrying about a non-50 falling behind somehow (I understand this is more probable with player skill than character level). In this case, they'd accept, say, a level 45, but a level 36 may raise eyebrows, even though logically speaking the difference wouldn't be that great.
So if I was the sort to join TFs, and I wasn't on a level 50 (or high 40s character), I'd expect them to at least consider my offer to join, but I wouldn't be offended if they rejected. -
Quote:The problem is that the usual poll often doesn't address why, for example, I'm going to move my characters from red to blue.My issue is that mostly I'm seeing people talking about moving characters from red to blue. Pretty much every poll response in the Going Rogue Side Switching Poll thread was about people moving from red to blue.
In my case, it's because I like playing the hero more, and it makes me feel better to do so. When I play morality-choice games like Mass Effect I often end up so far into the "light side" I out-light the representative Light Side character.
So there's very little that villainside can do to make me prefer it more than heroside, assuming ATs are common to both, without turning villainside into heroside.
It's a personal, subjective thing.
Whereas I've read posts from some which talk about how they prefer the Ancillary Power Pools on blueside, or how they like blueside zones, or some such. Weirdly, I've not seen posts about preferring the blueside markets other than posts complaining about posts like that, but then I don't exactly read every post on the forums, especially if they look like they're going into a rant.
So the devs can work on redside, but for people like me, I don't see how they can change redside and still keep it redside, and not a carbon copy of blueside. -
Quote:I remember using that site. I stopped when it went down, and I couldn't tell if it was down for everyone or just me.I use a site called Down for everyone or just me? which basically tells me if I can't load a site because it's down for everyone, or if it's just a problem on my end. When the boards start spazzing out, it is for everyone, so I know it's a server-side problem.

Quote:I remember, a long time ago (sometime in I4?), where there were calls for the devs to stop releasing any new content for one issue, and just focus on QoL.As much as I love QoL additions, I just want the Devs to focus on adding content to existing zones now and more mission types/variety.
I assume that the perception is they've done this, and now people want it back the other way. -

I know there's a bug going around for it, but I just wanted to reconfirm a few things.
Firstly, I'm almost sure I got hit by that bug (I only noticed because I was looking forward to City Traveller, and was puzzled when I hadn't gotten it), but the "Total Paid Time" and "Veteran Rewards Time" fields are confusing. I subscribed to this game in December 2004, and I don't think I had a lapse of more than a week back in 2007, but I could be misremembering. The Total Paid Time says 4 years 7 months (which would bring it to June 2009, at about the time of my 54-month reward), and Veteran Rewards Time says 4 years 10 months (September 2009, the time of my 57-month reward). I've paid for one month, back in September 2007, by a time card (the time of said lapse).
In-game, I've only gotten my 57-month reward. The last veteran reward entry on my accounts page is the 57-month reward, in September 2009. By my calculations I should have at least the 60-month reward, but I am not absolutely sure. I was hoping the weirdness on the account page would make it more certain.
Secondly, I tried logging into a character I haven't logged in on in 103 days. I did not get a veteran badge awarded announcement on that character. I am also hoping that is further confirmation that it's bugged.
Finally, I am uncertain about whether I need to submit my account name at any part of the process of contacting support. I know I will never need to reveal my password (and will indeed treat requests for such with suspicion), but account name I'm less certain about. If I send an in-game /petition about this issue, will it include my account details automatically? -

Quote:I have no idea, and would like to know the answer too. Is it fashionable or something?I would never make this mistake, as my speakers are constantly beaming bright blue cherenkov radiation at me.
Seriously, what is up with computer peripherals having these actinic blue lights the past few years?
Quote:As far as postits over your mouse's projector, wouldn't the red light be the first thing you look at when your mouse isn't moving to ensure it's actually working at all?
Weirdly, though, I've noticed people who check either the surface the mouse is moving on (in the case of this prank, the prankee would probably see the post-it note anyway), or just keep moving the mouse anyway. When I asked, apparently they're "used to the old mouse roller balls" or some such.
Yes, I know the ball-mouse has not been used for a long time now. I see it as kind of how I can't seem to move past HTML 4.01 into something more recent. -
I don't like the mood/atmosphere of villainside, so I think most of my villains are going blueside, at the very least to Rogue level, probably to Vigilante level, and possibly all the way to Hero. Certainly the ones created later, after I got tired of all the red-and-black of Grandville.
At least one, my Night Widow, is staying villainside, since I'm not sure if EATs are allowed to side-switch (I know this was mentioned sometime, but I forget what the answer was), and it'll feel weird to bring her heroside anyway. Probably another character, my EM/DA Brute, is staying villainside, since I've pretty much abandoned that character because I dislike Dark Armour. (Yes, this is despite playing the EM/DA to 50. I'm stubborn.)
I might leave another villain character I like playing (either my Bots/Dark MM or Thugs/Poison MM) villainside, to see what the reward is for "staying true".
I don't have any plans to side-switch any of my heroic characters. Maybe I might move over one of those I don't play much anymore, just to see what it's like, but I doubt I'll have the time, what with the new content.
Brand new characters are most likely to start in Praetoria for the New Shiny factor. First one in Loyalists, and subsequent ones possibly in Resistance to see what it's like. I know the Loyalists are supposed to be the Evil faction (as much as there's Good vs Evil in Praetoria, anyway), but more importantly to me they're the more Lawful (in D&D terms) faction. After that, I don't see any of them going villainside, although the Praetoria content might change my mind.
