  1. If you tried everything and the Updater won't work try this: Go to Program Files/City of Heroes (or Program Files (x86) on 64-bit) and throw out everything remotely named cohupdater. Then download the game client from the City of Heroes web site (it's really just the updater). Save it on the desktop and, and after it downloads, double-click it.

The new updater will download itself, patch the updater in Program Files properly, and create a desktop shortcut. After that you can throw out the cohupdater.exe and the extra files it created on the desktop.

(P.S. This procedure is also in one of the knowledgebase articles)

Any official word on whether these stability issues are still being looked at? I worry now that I see an "Ultra Mode" option coming that they're working too hard on the new stuff and not on fixing the old broken stuff.
No idea yet. Hopefully we'll know soon enough.
  3. The standard Cmd-C to copy, Cmd-V to paste, plus Ctrl-C to copy, Ctrl-V to paste, can do that. Usually. Occasionally there's a bug which makes it not work correctly.

I'll see if I can try the fix above. Just wanted to share it as more info for you, Cuppa.
Please also send the content of this post to Support (help.ncsoft.com) as a bug report so they can track this issue and determine how widespread it is.
  5. There's a little more complexity involved than simply which kind of video your Mac has. I can only say with certainty that the best *chance* you have is if your Mac has discrete video. I'm only going that far right now because I'd rather not fuel speculation when it could lead to disappointment later.

For those interested though, the complexity is due to the fact that there are so many layers involved. There's the video processor itself; the OpenGL layer of MacOS X; Transgaming's Cider; and then City of Heroes.

As of right now, there's no information of whether MacOS X will support the OpenGL instructions needed for Ultra. There's no information on whether Transgaming has already added support for those instructions, or if they plan to. And while there's information about "optimal" video hardware for Ultra, there's no info yet on whether Ultra can be used in a more limited fashion on less than optimal hardware.

And there's also the possibility, of course, that Apple will release an entirely new suite of Macs, or a new MacOS X with better OpenGL support, before Ultra even hits open beta.

Therefore, any predictions right now would be premature.
  6. I can't say for sure, as...well, nobody really knows what the Mac requirements will be yet.

It depends on a few factors, including system hardware, operating system software, and how Transgaming's Cider works/performs with Ultra mode.

If I had to guess right now, I'd say you stand the best chance for Ultra support if you're using a Mac that has discrete video - not the integrated Intel models, or the nVidia 9400M "shared" graphics.
  7. I'm going to download the test client from see if it's the right build. If it isn't I'll annoy Support immediately.

EDIT: The version on the ftp site is correct - but you have to be careful to download MAC_CoH_Test_Server_US.dmg (or MAC_CoH_Test_Server_EU.dmg for Europe) and not the standard MAC_CoH_Installer_US.dmg.
  8. Ok, I see what's going on now. I didn't compare my test client with the live client directly. It turns out the live client has a key that's *missing*, not different.

So what you want to do is locate:

    <key>CiderBuild</key>
    <string>3069</string>

And add in 2 lines after it like this:

    <key>CiderBuild</key>
    <string>3069</string>
    <key>CiderGameOptions</key>
    <string>-- cohupdater.exe -test</string>

    If you already changed this:

    <string>c:\coh\cohupdater.exe -test</string>

then put it back like this:

    <string>c:\coh\cohupdater.exe</string>

    That should fix the problem.
  9. I forgot to add the part where you go to this folder:

Users > (your name) > Library > Preferences

and throw out any folder named City of Heroes.

If that doesn't work, open Console (Applications > Utilities > Console) and paste the last few lines after the client fails to launch into a reply here.
  10. You must have downloaded the wrong one.

No problem though, there's a relatively simple fix to make it work anyway:

    1. Right-click the application, and select Show Package Contents.

    2. Open Contents.

    3. Open Info.plist in a text editor like TextEdit, or if you have the Developer Tools installed, double-click it to open it in Property List Editor.

    4. Where it says this:

    <string>-- cohupdater.exe</string>

    Change it to this:

    <string>-- cohupdater.exe -test</string>

    5. Save the file and exit the text editor.

    6. Double-click the application and wait for it to patch.

    Or that works too.

Just be glad we don't seem to be experiencing the patch failures the Windows patcher is having with the training room.

You might have. Check in the "c_drive" folder (Contents > Resources > transgaming > drive_c) and see if there's a "Program Files". If there is, that means your game files might be in Program Files > City of Heroes instead of "coh". I've made that mistake myself, so I speak from experience.

The easy way to tell which one is in use is once you start patching, you can check both folders and see which of those has more than just a couple of files in it.

Try clearing out the coh folder (throw everything out) in the Training Room client, then start the patch, and quit after it begins downloading. Then copy the Piggs folder from the live client again.

someone told me that you can copy the folders over to the test and it cuts down drastically although that was on PC. anyone know how or try this on mac?
    That's covered in my guide.

    Mids for Mac.

There is also the web-based Suckerpunch planner.

Mids does not seem to work with Crossover for some reason (yet) but it will work with Parallels.

    Updater Problem

Oops...my fault, I got that address wrong. Oh well, either way let's test and see if you have a DNS issue.

These are instructions for Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), since CoH requires one of the two.

Open System Preferences (on the Apple menu) and select Network. Whichever network type has a green dot next to it and is closest to the top (the "Connected" one), select that - it's usually either Airport or Ethernet. Then click the "Advanced...".

Click the tab that says "DNS". If there are any selectable items in the left pane, click each one and remove it with the - button (don't worry about the grey ones, they're automatic and should go away soon enough). Then click the + button and type this:

    208.67.222.222

Then click the + again and type this:

    208.67.220.220

Then click OK and then Apply.

That will switch your DNS to OpenDNS, which I use and I already know has no trouble finding the coh patcher.

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to look into whether your DSL provider is blocking access to coh servers, which is something only NC Support or a phone call to your DSL provider can solve.

    Updater Problem

What DSL provider do you use?

Also, try this: Open Terminal (Applications > Utiities > Terminal) and type "ping updater.coh.com" and hit Return. Let me know what kind of response you get.
  19. You can actually load bind files from your user folder from inside CoH, there's no need to even copy them to the coh folder. There are instructions in my guide (linked in the signature):

    Loading Bind Files

The City of Heroes Mac client has a "D" drive mapped to the location of your current Home folder on the Mac. Placing your bind file there will allow you to load it directly from inside the game:

    1. Place a bind file, such as "binds.txt", in your Home folder.

    2. In-game, type "/bindloadfile d:/binds.txt" and press Return.

    3. Your binds are now available!
  20. CityBinder has source code available on Sourceforge, but it hasn't been updated in over 2 years. I wouldn't count on it being ported to Mac, or even continuing to work on more recent Windows versions.

That said, it's easy enough to create binds yourself. Set them up in-game, save it to a default file (from Options > Keymapping in-game) and then load it on each character.

    Updater Problem

Usually when it's stuck on Connecting #1... there's a connection issue. What kind of internet connection do you have?

Also, NC support usually doesn't answer support requests on Sunday, you'll probably get a reply tomorrow.

Also send a support request at help.ncsoft.com so they can track the issue as well.

    Reply if it doesn't work.
  23. Try following the steps here:

If those don't work, start a new thread and post the last few lines of your Console log (Applications > Utilities > Console) by using copy/paste.
