Quote:Oh wow. I think I really like that. And I can just keep it around as a backup later on or something. I may very well order it and those other two things today, save me a trip to Fry's. I doubt I'd find a better deal there. Here's a 240 GT for $25 after mail-in rebate. It's a low end card, but not the very bottom end and will definitely be an improvement over what you're using.

Father Xmas will probably have better suggestions than mine. If this is the first computer you've built, congrats, the next one will be better, stronger, faster. Have fun with it.

EDIT: And I think this would be something like the 3rd or 4th computer I've built for myself. This is only counting Windows PCs, mind you. Before that it was Amiga computers, lol. -
Perhaps I will go with NewEgg instead, hmm...

I suppose I could afford a video card after those two things, but I don't think it could be more than $50. I don't know if it would be worth it. -
It's such a downer, you know? I was intending to get a copy of Windows 7, and then an SSD drive. I was going to get a video card with a built-in water block, and I was going to stuff a two radiators into a HAF-X case. The whole thing was going to be bathed in blue LED light from every single fan within the case. I was going to get a Ceton InfiniTV 4 so that when I wasn't playing games or watching movies on Blu-Ray (or via Netflix), then I could use the computer to watch FiOS directly.
I was even contemplating getting a Killer Xeno Pro, hahaha!
I figure I'll continue this project anyway though. Like when I get my tax returns next year. By then, however, I might want to think about getting another motherboard altogether. I guess I'll see. -
Quote:I have indeed tried both. The 7800 GS has only 256 megs of VRAM to play with. No Ultra mode, and the framerate on most maps and zones is under par. Doing the BAF trial with a full league, for example, usually gives me a slide show.I'm pretty sure your 7800GS would make a better gaming card than the onboard 8300GS. Try both and see for yourself. You should backup and wipe a hard drive and start building already. Have fun!
EDIT: I might have failed to make it clear that right now, I'm using a spare 40 gig drive (from an even older system with no other usable components) as a boot drive for the MSI motherboard, which I have in a spare case right now. I installed CoH on that system last night just to see how well it would look.
As for the CPU, I will look into that! -
Earlier this year, I started gathering components in order to assemble myself a new computer, but I got stalled on that due to insufficient income. I plan on restarting that project as soon as I can, but as a result, I have this spare hardware lying around.
In the meantime, I've decided that I am going to make a new machine out of the new components, and use what I can from my old machine.
The new bits of hardware I was able to acquire are:
* An MSI NF980-G65 motherboard
* A Rosewill Lightning 800 watt PSU
* An APC BE650G 650 VA 390 Watts UPS
-----
I also got a few components that I had considered "temporary"; stand-ins until I could get parts more powerful or larger. This includes 4 gigs of DDR3 1333 memory, and an AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz Socket AM3 45W Single-Core Processor.
My old system has an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ CPU, with 2 gigs of DDR1 memory (sorry, I forget the speed). Its video card is an old GeForce 7800 GS AGP. The new motherboard's onboard video is capable of much higher framerates and is able to use some of CoH's Ultra Mode options (ambient occlusion seems to cause a huge decrease in the framerate, so I have to turn that off).
-----
The parts from the old system that I can still use are:
* Its hard drives (the 200 gig and the 500 gig drives; the 80 gig boot drive I would not want to use, but I will want to copy its data)
* The sound card (Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCI)
* The TV card (A Pinnacle PCTV model that I can't remember right now).
* The case (ATX; Mid tower size)
* The PSU (A Rosewill RP550-2)
* The operating system (Windows XP Home; I actually have two legit reg codes for this)
------
The thing is though, the hard drives and the optical drives are all PATA, so I will need to get a PCIe PATA interface at the Fry's tomorrow, if I wish to do this. I also plan on getting a SATA hard drive for use as the boot drive. The optical drives can use the single PATA port on the motherboard.
That's what I plan to shop for tomorrow. But I was wondering off-hand if anyone here could give me any suggestions? Remember, I don't really have a lot of money right now. Getting another hard drive and an interface card will be kind of pushing it already. But I'd really like to play CoH at a decent framerate for now! -
Looks like the evil Glitch Gremlin is on the loose in Atlas Park!
-
To keep in theme with recent events in CoH, I say that this is the cowboy costume we need in the game:
-
So our only choices are to either alienate free players from the game, or else allow ourselves to be deluged by RMT spam again?
-
Haven't I seen this on TV Tropes?
"Long ago, the wizards all banded together and created the Great Barrier, to keep the Big Annoyance from pestering us ever again!"
"Well yeah, but that was a long time ago, and I wasn't even alive then! So we should bring the Great Barrier down because the Big Annoyance isn't even around anymore!"
"...but the Big Annoyance is gone because of the Great Barrier."
"That's what I mean! The Big Annoyance is gone now, so we don't need the Great Barrier!"
"..." -

O RLY?
Well then I guess you'll be happy to know that I spec'd out of not just Detonator, but also Resuscitate, so that I may have both Provoke and Caltrops, and that I fully slotted Provoke with the Perfect Zinger set.
Now I just have to get a hang of this new style of play before I ramp up the difficulty.
EDIT: So far I've just tried it with level 54 Heavy Assault Suits and level 54 Rikti mobs in the Rikti War Zone. I'm drawing their fire more effectively now. I just have to keep myself away from my bots so they don't get hit with any AOE's. -
It's never been necessary for me. Mobs die too quickly anyway. *shrug*
-
BTW I'm keeping Photon Grenade. Again, for thematic purposes. You know, because just using Provoke is not enough.
"Knock, knock!"
...what the...???
BLAM!!!
Plus I really like having the Ragnarok set in there. It's fun to see them get knocked down by a blast of energy. -
I had included all three ranged attacks mostly for thematic purposes (I play on Virtue). Whenever I play, I usually use the Photon Grenade to get the mobs' attention to focus on me and let my bots do their thing. I've since discovered that Provoke is better at that sort of thing.
I'm not sure if Caltrops will really help me very much, even if it's pretty good. The reason for that is my damage output is already pretty damned high.
I will likely replace the Winter's Gift set for Luck of the Gambler, and the recharge global in particular. That way I can have Poison Trap available to me more often.
EDIT: Also, what I will likely do is pull off three slots each from health and stamina, and that way I can give six slots in Provoke (and I could put in, say the entire Perfect Zinger set), plus another slot I can put somewhere else.
Edit 2: Or no, just leave Hover with its inherent slot, and that would give me 3 bonus slots to put somewhere else. I'd still put in a LotG global into Hover tho; I've already got that one twice. I could use it a third time! -
OK, I guess I will try posting it by memory. I'm at work tho, but I'm pretty sure I can remember it all.

Edit 2: Seems to me I can probably pull off some slots from Health and Stamina to put them into Provoke, no? -
I have the Tactics power on that MM, which I use all the time.
To answer the other person's question, I've never used Mids or whatever to plan out my builds. I've gotten pretty good working it out in my head. So I don't have anything to post, unless I write it all out here by memory. -
I don't think there's any IO in a taunt set that enhances both accuracy and taunt duration?
-
I've decided I am going to respec my robots/traps MM. She has the [Detonator] power, but I can count on one hand the number of times I've used it in the last six years. After doing a bit of research, it looked like the best power to replace it with would be [Provoke] from the Presence pool.
The thing is, that power only has its inherent slot (with a Nucleolus Exposure in it). If I'm going to replace Detonator with Provoke, should I bother trying to steal slots from other powers to put there? Otherwise, I think I'll just put a single taunt IO there. -
I noticed this last night while playing my bots/traps MM on a mission with Carnies in it. My bots would stop attacking the ones that could phase when they did so.
In retrospect though, I should have noticed this when I first used Return to Battle in a Lambda trial. -
They're trying to be true to superhero comic book lore, right?
That means "The Coming Storm" will be an epic reboot of the universe.
That means, all of the signature heroes and villains are going to die.
But it's a comic book death. After this "infinite crisis", everything will be reset and all the changes made to the game's storyline since the game went online will be wiped out so they can start over again.
Great Scott, this is heavy. -
This happened to me on my rogue bots/traps MM. I decided to go through it again just to see if I'd get a shard from the glowie at the end of the last mission. Alas, I did not!

88 mph, Rocket Board, Time Manipulation, MARTy...
I'm sensing a theme, here! -
Quote:I think it would have been more cool to have Statesman, Cole and Recluse all standing there looking epic or something, while you had the Avatar of Hamidon behind them.Has there been any explanation provided as to why the signature image for Freedom shows Statesman fighting a nameless warworks robot?
I mean, why not Lord Recluse or Emperor Cole? Or even Hamidon or his Avatar? How was it somehow deemed more awesome to show him fighting a non-living robot? (and by the way, what is the robot doing -- about to punch him with a gun??).
And then, behind all that, there'd be Nemesis' shadow looming over all of it. Oops, I mean that Coming Storm thing. Yeah! -
My biggest problem with it is that it won't work on water. Unless you have power.
