You know what? I'd agree, and I've felt like the minority with that attitude.
Lambda has a fast pace, stays smaller in size (particuarly with the split for acid/grenade collection) so you feel directly like you are contributing, The Marauder fight isn't a straight up AV bash, and the overall length feels about right time, etc.
Keyes really isn't bad either. The setup steps are a bit mundane, but it makes sense and now that the pulse isn't overpowered, it feels about right. That last fight has a great pace and frenetic feel to it.
The others... bleh. BAF feels like a first try at trials that lacks flair. UGT would be cool, but is way longer than it needs to be and that weighs the whole thing down (though ascetically, I love UGT). MoM is... well, it wants to be epic, but it is just a goulash of psionic slop from what I can tell on my repeated attempts. I haven't even bothered with TPN based on everything I've read.
So for the OP, I'd personally like to see more things like Lambda. Sharp, fast, smaller sub-teams in different areas and then a regather for something like Keyes/Marauder finish. -

I caught this on the big screen before Sherlock over the weekend.
It looks just as fun as awesome as the previous two - best on screen renditions of Batman. period. (And certain people's opposition just makes me more convinced of that.)
-
So, I'm... angry because nothing is happening? It just sounds wrong and goofy.
I'm afraid I do not alike the concept and /unsign this.
(Besides, there is nothing really needing changing with tankers.)
-
I had not gotten any until today (12/18) on a Manti. It was so bad that even attempting to select the TF character at the server screen resulted in a failure to connect to mapserver error. Took about 5-6 tries to get reconnected and playing.

Quote:That's weird? The really wierd thing though is that people complain about original content trivialized since the incarnate system came into play, but then complain when the Devs give them something that is more powerfull than them.
So a character works and learns and develops - fighting against the worst that Paragon has to offer. Sometimes he is defeated, only to jump back into the fray. He works alone, pushing the difficulty of his foes to the limit. He works in teams, facing powerful Archvillains for the greater good. He (ok, or she) rises in ability to gain a status of incarnate... and suddenly, nothing can be achieved without forming leagues of allies.
I can't speak for everyone, but I doubt it is that being an incarnate trivialized the old content and something more powerful was wanted. For me it was I wanted something that let me continue to face scaled foes and challenges and continue my story (stories). Not for the the level of opposition to jump through the roof.
Being dissatisfied with this is weird? No, it is weird that when a character is supposed to be at its most powerful it feels the weakest. That is weird.
(Opposition is scaled in form of challenge throughout this game. Failure and limitation is possible, but not insurmountable because you are the SUPERHERO and meant to overcome.
This isn't your normal content tossed into some MMO. You aren't a faceless soldier. You aren't some witty smuggler. You aren't a knight. You are a superhero. And as you reach for the peak of your power you suddenly you can't do anything new alone, or even with a small team. I get that this is an MMO, and I get that many thoroughly enjoy the trials, and I've played Lam, and BAF, and Keyes, and UGT repeatedly and had fun. But for me it just doesn't feel right with the motif. And now, these two new ones.... well, I sure don't feel heroic getting crushed in confusing waves of brutal psionic attacks or letting a rock from some wickedly buffed average joe lay an incarnate out for any reason.
Give me a challenge, that is fine. New mechanics, quirks to drive cooperation and balance in the teams - these I accept. Reducing 16-24 incarnates to a struggle simply because of insane damage is neither amusing or fun. It is certainly not a challenge that I appreciate.
There is a formula for this game that is crazy fun and success from 1-50... and then suddenly the formula changes.
Again, I recognize the place for trials in an MMO. Yet, I hail the coming change of Dark Astoria, and I still contend it was an abject design failure to wait as long as they did. I hope it returns to the successful core of this game.
They bought 12 more months of my loyalty with hope before when I wavered. I am wavering again, and only DA and letting me feel like a HERO again is likely to save it. If that doesn't deliver... I will make a sad face... and I am becoming apprehensive about it.)
edit: You know, after years of being on the 'we don't need to raise the level cap' bandwagon I am starting to think that raising the level cap and adding appropriate content would have been much better... -
Quote:That is the question though... What level will he die at? The death in the ep4 was when we were, what? 40? If they play eps 5-7 at 50, then the issue shrinks some, but they already said they were adjusting content throughout the game related to the affected character, so there are interesting possibilities in store.I can't see those arc's changing as they are in the "past" and Who Will Die is in the "present" time of the game.
Also, remember time is by level in a character's career, right? Not chronological time for us as players. -
Quote:Ok I am not sure if this has been addressed yet, so who do we talk to about the STF then? BaB? BaB BaB BaB (holding up a sign chatting that)
Or what does poor Maria ask us to do now?
edit: they did say they have a lot of content to rework due to the death. It will be interesting to see how that arc shifts and the timing of when Statesman is supposed to die in the Praetorian time line... -
Quote:But it does undercut the strength of the in-game story telling. And that is my problem with it. It cheapens their product.I'm throwing my lot in with the contingent of players who think that the overall SSA has been pretty good and that revealing now that Statesman will die in chapter 5 ISN'T going to doom the entire arc to failure. Really, there are far too many ways things can go now, especially factoring States' "death" into things, for me to consider this a deal-breaking spoiler.
-
Quote:There's a reason we announced this ahead of time. There's a reason we decided that this would be the cadence of the reveals. Perhaps all is not presently clear, and overtime it will be made as such, but there is a reason.
We wanted you to know in advance that States would die.
We wanted you to know that this is coming.
This is part of the delivery of the story which will play itself out in the coming months.
It may just be difficult to see the forest for the trees right now.
When watching a movie or reading a book I never - NEVER - skip ahead to read a key point so I can go back and then continue with that revealed nugget in order to make the story more rich and fulfilling. (for example, ever see a book jacket that says - 'On page 400 this key event will take place. Enjoy!' Or wouldn't Star Wars have been awesome if while Luke was training with Yoda the film stopped and a trailer revealed that Vader was his dad, or that Han would be captured no matter what he did, and then the movie continued?)
I categorically reject any premise that says this particular story is somehow different than any other medium of story telling.
And that doesn't even address the fact that I am so thoroughly enjoying the arc, that I was taking the time to consider which character got the opportunity to run it, and whether it is a hero or villain first to find out what happens for myself. I was looking forward to ep5 after ep4. Now I really, really don't care as much about the story anymore. Like it or not, Zwil, this decision has sullied the experience I was enjoying from WWD.
(As an aside, I joined about Issue 7 and I never had a strong opinion one way or another about anything big picture that was done until recently. And now item after item is piling up and now I feel like a negative nancy [no offense to any nancies out there]... I am becoming increasingly disappointed and unenthusiastic over the last 12 months....) -
Someone is going to die. They have said that from the beginning. The question is, would any of them have deserved it?
Now they have told us it will be Statesman. Fine. big whoop. Kill the Mary Sue, and be done.
If he comes back - at all - I will be as annoyed and all 'that's stupid' just like I have every time a comic or movie brings back the dead hero. Dead is dead. Is dead.
Alas, poor Statesman! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow
of infinite knockback, and invincible fancy: he hath
borne us on his back a thousand times; and now, how
adored in my imagination it is! -
Quote:The +resist as your health diminishes (in Dodge?) is a very nice steroid power on a tank. Very, very noticable on a tank when I almost always forget about it on a scrapper. That's another valid point that results in a strike for SR: Shield Defense has a solid 'steroid' power that can really give you a lot of clutch survivability. Elude, on the other hand, has a hard crash and is only useful when you come up against mobs that have massive +to hit buffs that completely floor your defenses.

Quote:Afterburner does give significant control of the 'sloppy' nature of fly.I imagine the key there would be if Afterburner gives you enough inertial control to counteract the relatively "sloppy" nature of the basic Fly power. My guess is that using Afterburner would be better than nothing, but it probably wouldn't be the optimal power to use for overall speed/control.
I doubt the total speed needed is there, but didn't think to try it when I was on briefly last night. Just wondered if anyone else did. -
I am curious, anyone try it with Fly+Afterburner this year?
(And as to the OP - the only characters I have that have worked for these badges also got IR as the key element to success, as per the other posters.) -
Quote:For those who think knowing Statesman will die ruins the story telling, may I ask you:
Does knowing that in every other case Statesman (and any other hero, including yourself in the CoH Universe) is going to live ruin the story for you? We all know with 99.99999% certainty that the hero of a series lives. Does such cases of knowing that the hero doesn't die *ruin* the story for you?
Ordinarily, every time the hero is threatened with death... we know it ain't gonna happen. That's a story spoiler for you, then, right?
The point of the spoiler complaint with this is that there was no reason to reveal this. Allow speculation and discussion and interest for ep 5 to continue for weeks.(particularly after the generally favaorable ep 4 response I've seen.)
Then allow the story to tell itself and let the community bubble and churn on its own when ep 5 hits live. For the life of me I cannot think of one good reason for this to have been revealed. At all. -
Quote:Outstanding post.Grandfather: She doesn't get eaten by the eels at this time.
Grandson: What?
Grandfather: The eel doesn't get her...I'm explaining to you because you looked nervous.
Grandson: I...I wasn't nervous. Well, maybe I was a little bit concerned but that's not the same thing.
Grandfather: Because we can stop now if you want.
I'm sorry, I know this is how comic books like to do it, but it's still really, REALLY stupid. From the arc title to this sudden and premature death of all the fun speculation, I'm almost embarrassed every time I do one of these at how they're advertised. It's like the writers believe the core of the work is crud, so they need these ham-fisted gimmicks to sell it. Which is sad, because it's a pretty good arc that could stand on its own, IMO. If it had a normal name and no spoilers, what was going to happen in the next week or two was going to hit like a thunderbolt we'd all be talking about for months.
Now, well, it's one of the biggest moments in the history of the game lore and we've been spoiled on it, but barring any other "screaming eel" moments, we can at least wonder *how* it happens. Yay? -
I am stunned by the awesomeness of this complete ruination of story for premature marketing.
(For the record, I never would have clicked on the thread if I had thought there was something so explicit after all the hinting and vague-ary to this point...)
Quote:The feeling is that impact of States dying is not in the reveal that he's dying but in the fact that he's dying. How does he die? What does it mean for the Freedom Phalanx and, perhaps more importantly, what does it mean for the future safety and well being of Paragon City.
There's a lot more questions to be answered and story to be explored, even after his death.
And trust me, his death scene is pretty stirring. -
I think Part 4 was classic comic story telling, felt dynamic as both a hero and a villain, and tied up many of the various dangling threads from 1-3 nicely. I really enjoy it and my interest for 5 has nudged up a notch.
In particular, for the villain side, seeing the Phalanx stand around and discuss my character was pretty sweet.
On another note, this story sure is being rough on folks. -
I have little of real value to add looking at the discussion and recommendations, but I saw this little nugget:
Quote:I scanned for a response, and if I missed it, I apologize. The Magnificent Seven Is this a remake of Seven Samurai? I have seen the original.
Yes, it is a remake of the original Seven Samurai. However, it takes the premise and translates it remarkably well to the Old West of the USA. It is a worthy and enjoyable film on its own - more so if you know the source material and enjoyed that. -
Quote:AFAIK, all the 'shop bought' are attuned - which means they are always equal to your playing level. So if exemp'd for a task force, they adjust with you. If you sk up for a task force, they adjust up with you.So I was looking at the shop bought Ghost Widow stuff and the normal ghost widow stuff, and while the stats are the same, the procs have this 3 times a minute dealio.
So, does this mean that you will be better off going for crafted procs rather than shop bought? Or do shop bought procs scale down better?
It could easily be argued that they are superior to crafted versions. -
I love my doms, but I'm hardly a pro - learning every time I take one for a spin, but in it's most elegant and fun form, the mindset is:
- Hold it, kill it.
As powers and abilities build:- Hold them all, kill them at your leisure.
Think blaster where you have to shoot it quick before it kills you for frenetic activity, but that is balanced by submitting your foes to obnoxious amounts of mez that you can toss about like candy at a parade.
Speed - attack, attack, attack to build Domination and keep it going.
(for teaming, best advice is limit/avoid the aoe immob - or at least don't use it early. Your instinct, despite best intentions, will be to use it as a lead. The resulting respond can lead to bad things. Let the team aggressors set aggro and then mez the dangers and kill like a blaster or scrapper) -
Quote:Oh, no doubt there, the OP was doomed from the start.Sure, you can't make dev communication reach everyone. What are they going to do, broadcast system messages every hour about game news? It'd just tick off the people who otherwise don't care.
Where the OP went wrong (and I'm not trying to flame, here, trying to be constructive) is that he came to the forums to ask about solo content. At that point, why not look around a little? Check Community and Dev digests. Check the Announcements forum. Look in City Life (though someone new to the forums wouldn't know about VK's coffee talk summaries).
At the very least, ask the question politely and neutrally. Getting snide about it just means you look silly if the question has a good answer. "Are there any plans for solo Incarnate content yet?" is cool. "Where's our solo Incarnate content? Clock's ticking, guys," opens you up for ownage. -
Quote:I know, Gecko. I said, I like their communication, but that is because it reaches me, and most of those with whom I regularly play.
Info, is out there if you're willing to spend 2 min. looking for for it.
All I'm saying is given posts like the OP's, and a few conversations in game... people are still missing the message so the communication is not all inclusive of their target audience. I don't even know if they need/can do more, but there is a segment that is not covered, for whatever reason. It is just an observation. -
Quote:Yes, they do and I am generally impressed by their amount of communication. Then you guys just aren't looking in the right sections. The devs make frequent announcements, and where the devs don't out and out announce it, the players spread the word. Ever week there's a coffee talk with Zwillinger and whatever dev or redname drops in that talks about the current goings on, if you don't want to watch the recorded ustream vids there's a weekly transcription that covers the highlights. And they announce all of this stuff on facebook and other media.
Everything was announced at the Player Summit, which was heavily advertised, then heavily discussed and even re-presented on Ustream for everyone that couldn't attend.
The devs communicate plenty, and more so than most companies from what I've seen.
But look at what you wrote... that is heavily forums focused. Now, what percentage of the playerbase actively/regularly uses the forums? How many casually check it out periodically? How many every now and then? How many never? -
