Years? More like weeks. The devs fixed both the nipples and the flesh colored tights by the time I entered the game in August 2004. I remember the forums at the time had a thread on how to patch your game client with the original art to allow you to use and see the "nipple" costume pieces but only on your own computer.

This post from a few years ago by Lothic explains the history a bit more in depth.

With those colors available it was very easy (or at least much easier than it is now) to create naked-looking characters.

The original appearance of female nipples in this game were never really as blatantly obvious as some people remember them to be. Basically the way the polygons looked on the female body form made it look, from certain angles, like there was a bit of something sticking out there. I think all the Devs did was slightly edit the model just enough to smooth over the rough edges so to speak to minimize the mere 'hint' of nipple.

From a realism point of view I wouldn't mind if there were more direct ways for these kinds of things to be part of the character models. But I understand that as a Teen rated game there's only so much realism the Devs are going to tolerate and having to be be stuck with featureless Barbie and Ken dolls is clearly safer from the "don't want to piss off overly sensitive parents" standpoint. I suspect the only reason female nipples were nerfed to the degree that they were was to appease someone who complained about it. Oh well. *shrugs*

Sadly, I believe Interface may be right. I was in Virtue Pocket D after CoH's closure was announced and one of the "Red Names" appeared and threw a massive party that included Nemesis Ponies, Fighting of Hami, dozens of AV's and even a trip to the Old Paragon Dance Party. Yes I have screen shots so it did happen . The "Red Name" also opened up the Ski Chalet on VIRTUE. He was asked if he could please open it on other servers, but he implied that he lacked the access to do so.

Either way I hope someone can restart the Ski Chalet.

PS. Special Thanks to the "Red Name" for that party, It made the bad news a little easier for me and my friends to take.

Unlike NCSoft, I would suggest that Paramount continued to support the fan base of Star Trek in the same manner that CoH fans at a minimum deserve. They did the equivalent of gamings "maintenance mode" (keeping the servers running but producing no new content.) In 60's TV land this was known as "Reruns" and in both MMORPGS and TV it allows fans to still enjoy their favorite characters doing the same missions from the past.

NCSoft's actions are the equivalent of canceling "Star Trek", refusing to license or resell the rights, refusing to rerun any episodes, and if NCSoft's past history is any indication they will try to take legal action against any fan clever enough to have recorded StarTrek on a VTR*.

Paramount by placing Star Trek into TV's "maintenance mode", instead of doing an NCSoft, allowed the Star Trek community to grow. In return Paramount profited to the tune of billions of dollars and now holds the rights to an IP that will last a 100 years.

To all my friends on Liberty, I say farewell. I am going to greatly miss this game. I can't believe this. I thought this game would run forever, and I would have plenty of chances to every so often be VIP. I haven't had much time to play games in the past few years, but I always tried to be on here a few months out of the year. So many personal memories for me with this game. Back in the end of 2004 my step dad got me into this game when it was first released, my mother before that even. Then in 2006, I got my(at the time GF) into this game. She later became my wife. We all had so much fun spending time together playing CoH/CoV. It kept us in contact and we had so much fun together. Then in 2009 I made a thread Giving the good news about my daughter being born. On the Liberty server( it's still there...http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=130904 ...

Also, this was my 1st MMO. I was never a MMO type person, but this game....there was something about it besides being able to game with my parents and my wife. Maybe it was the excellent people that I met in game, the awesome game play, the atmosphere in game. Who knows what just the one thing was or wasn't.... So many things....

You all will be missed, the game will be missed. Take care my gaming friends, and may fortune be with you all. Sending Love your way!

    God Bless You...................................

PS: I play Age of Conan once in a while, so if anyone decides to play that game I am Abacannazar on Set server. Farewell......
  7. Tony,

My GF and I as well as 2 friends, are willing to help with time and financial support. While I know it’s not a lot we can afford upwards of $150 a month towards a realistic project. We have also discussed that if NCSoft is actually willing to sell PS to the community and the community has a viable plan, then we our willing to invest between $5K and $20K in a community/PS venture.

We our willing to do this because we feel that The Game, The Devs, and the Community have all been fantastic and we have many fond memories. Last nights gathering with Arbiter Hawk at the “Paragon Dance Party”, just reaffirms that belief. It’s just icing on this cake that I seem to remember that when PDP was released, it was stated that one of the Devs had made it during their lunch breaks.

I respond showing that the pictures you posted are not relevant and Xenophage even points out that I did not use an absolute statement and instead used the word "Most" when I said "Most versions of Batman have him refuse to use guns against humans."

Now at this point if you were not serious and it was just "tongue in cheek" you could simply say, "I'm not serious, It was a joke."

Instead you get all serious and post more pictures showing Batman shooting people and make the false claim, similar to one that Xenophage had already pointed out to you, that I said "You couldn't find one instance where Batman ever used a gun against another human being." Furthermore you continue a similar discussion with another poster.

I point out that you are using a Strawman argument, misrepresenting my position and make it clear that my position is that "MOST versions of Batman have him refuse to use guns against humans"

Once again you could calm down and either acknowledge your mistakes or even just say nothing, but instead you act like someone who has been twice corrected for misrepresenting someones points by responding with a post telling me to calm down and quit acting like someone kicked my puppy.

The OP was using a "What would Batman Do" argument to say he wouldn't use trip mines, yet felt that full auto machine guns that target humans were OK. My entire point was that Batman is commonly portrayed as not using guns against humans.

"Most versions of Batman have him refuse to use guns against humans."

I directed you to the very page you have now chosen to post pictures from, so I would expect you to at least try to contradict what I actually said, instead of posting the very pictures I pointed you towards to refute some a strawman. How does posting 5 pictures out of at a minimum of half a million Batman comic panels spanning 2000+ issues and over 60+ years dispute my claim that

"MOST versions of Batman have him refuse to use guns against humans?"

You seem intent to try to put words in my mouth but so far you have failed to show that my statement is false. One more time since you seem to keep missing it.

"MOST VERSIONS OF BATMAN HAVE HIM REFUSE TO USE GUNS AGAINST HUMANS."
  10. Edit: Xenophage says what I mean better and with fewer words.

And how does your post counter my statement that "Most versions of Batman have him refuse to use guns against humans." None of those shots show him using a gun against another human.

Out of Batman's 2000+ canon (Not alternate reality) stories, spanning 60+ years, I CAN NOT think of 3 instances where Batman intentionally use a gun to cause harm to a human?

I don't recognize all of the pictures you posted but the first one is apparently from an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE story "Batman/Doc Savage Special". Using an Alternate reality Pic is about as valid as countering someones claim that "Statesman is a hero" by bringing up "Tyrant."

A website that actually looks at Batman and guns is

    http://sacomics.blogspot.com/2005/08...-and-guns.html

If you look it over you will quickly see that there are very few instances of Batman using a gun and virtually none where he intentionally shoots another human to cause harm.
  11. Others have pointed the out many flaws in your argument, but I am surprised no one has pointed out the logical inconsistency of your first post since in later posts you resort to asking WWBD (What Would Batman Do.)

Really? Considering his feelings on guns do you think Batman would be any more likely to run around with several giant sacks full of gun drones?

Additionally, You tried to portray that Batman's Sack would need to be huge to carry the Trip Mines but using the same logic for Gun Turrets means that multiple Giant Bags of Holding would be needed for all the Gun Turrets that you say are "Fine As Is"

If we dip into reality, rather then game graphics then an explosive device with proximity detector would weigh less than 8 ozs and over a dozen of them could fit in the pouches of the "Bat Belt" with room to spare. By comparison a single robotic full auto machine gun turret would weigh in at 30-50 pounds and need to be carried in the "Bat Back Pack". Considering the number that can wind up being destroyed in a single mission he had better also have the "Bat Hernia Belt" handy to carry them all.

    Challenge Trials

Short Response> I can see adding a timer function and a few other features to AE so that such missions could be designed by players. Other wise the proposed system would likely run into many of the same issues that PvP did, as well as give support to the claim that the game is "Pay to Win" OR upsets those who pay. I doubt that very many players would feel a Dev designed competition system to be a good use of Dev time.

Detailed Response> A good way of doing this is that the Devs MIGHT (S Code Rant) be able to "easily" add a Timer system, a few arena maps, and a few more enemies (Pylons, etc) to AE. Maybe even add a powers disabled feature like Ouroborus/Arena. This would allow those who want to compete create challenges and to debate what maps, levels and mobs are fair and leave the Devs out of it. It would allow for non competitive uses (Personal Best Times, Testing of different Builds, etc) thus being useful to a wider range of players, and would avoiding the badge and PL problems listed bellow.

By comparison a Dev created one would have a difficult time avoiding the same elements that limited PvP to a minority of the player base and would likely upset a percentage of players in the same way PvP has.

    1) PvP powers worked differently then they did in PvE in order to achieve "balance". This alienated many PvEers as well as some PvPers from the system. Even in your opening proposal this is already occurring. For the 4th challenge, You are calling for eliminating "Resurrect" a perfectly valid power used by my main character.

Would rules be added limiting fly (range = less damage), Phantom Army (invincible taunt tank), Phase shift (Can't touch this), and many others? If they are added then you alienate many players. If you don't add them then certain builds will have significant advantages and be FOTM.

    2) The Devs can expect even more complaints since what ever maps and enemies they choose will favor certain builds and result in criticism of the system.

    3) Specialty builds and teams WILL win. I can't see a reasonable way to prevent this. This will result in the perception that the average player can't possibly get their name in lights.

    4) All about the Benjamins. PvP predated money having an impact like it does now so a new and significant problem would be that those with money will have tricked out builds and powers that the poorer VIP players will lack. , Money will give a decided build advantage just with

    a) "Enhancement boosters",
    b) tens of thousands of "Super Pack" merits convertible to billions of influence allowing any in game enhancement to be bought at Wentworths
    c) "Store Bought Enhancments"

And what about all of the store bought inspirations and powers? Would the Devs disable them in this system and upset there "Paying" customers, or would they allow them, thus placing the bar that much higher for the poorer VIPs.

4a) Vet rewards. Allow them and even more players will not bother to use the system, disallow them and you risk upsetting your most loyal customers.

    5) Future additions. What happens when a new power (As an example the other new Power Pools like Sorcery) or a change to an old power (Time Bomb I25) is released that breaks the system even further? What if it's free? What if it's paid for? No matter what decision the Devs make people will be upset.

    6) Badges for high score. Just like PvP, this will upset a segment of badgers while at the same time another segment of badgers will likely find a way around the system (AFK Farms, Standing in Sirens Call safe areas, etc) which will upset those using the system the "correct way."

    7) "PLing"/"Extreme Farming" for rewards. How often have the Devs added a new system, Only to find that certain players had figured out how to gain rewards faster then the Devs liked then wound up nerfing the new system and upsetting not only some of the PLers but also some of those who first supported the system and even used it the "correct way".

Right off the top we have AE, PvP ranking system, AE, TF reward system (Speed Katie and Speeden), AE, Portal Corp missions (Wolf Farms, etc), AE and in case I forgot, AE!

And when all is said and done how many players will use the system? Compare that with how many players will be upset over the amount of Dev time needed to create and maintain it.

In real life many viruses can travel between different Species (as well as Family, Order and Class) and the minute we step into the realm of SciFi/Fantasy there are numerous examples of aliens and humans cross contaminating each other with viruses going at least as far back as "War of the Worlds".

It also happens with much smaller files, and even with the QuickChat file. Granted the smaller the file, the longer the bug will take to crash the client, but regardless it still happens.

To test for yourself, if you are capable of macroing a keyboard (outside of CoX), create a macro to open QuickChat, then close it (Escape key closes) and have it repeatedly open and close the QuickChat file (I had my test running several minutes) and you will see the memory slowly rise each time it opens.

The size of the popmenu file is irrelevant to the problem happening, it just speeds up the process.

If you happen to know, can you tell us how much memory is used use each time a small (<1K) popmenu is opened?

Are you seriously trying to tell me what a former customer and MY friend would remember and do?

Last time I talked to him he remembered his main characters as well as a half dozen PnP "Call of Cthulhu" characters from 2000 to 2007. He last played in 2009 his main being a fully IOed level 50 Ill/Rad. Are you seriously trying to say that he would not recognize his character? Heck I was gone from December 2009 till Sept 2011 and had no problem recognizing my characters and the game has not appreciably changed since then or between spring and fall of 2009. The only change I saw as I had to spend a few weeks getting my incarnate stuff and my reflexes back.

As for what he will play when he returns I am sure he will play both a new character with his son, as well as his old characters with his old friends.

As for signing on he has not done so since 2009 and is unlikely too until 2015-2017, unless he heard of this sort of change. Since he was unaware of "Freedom" until December 2012 when I last talked to him, it is quite possible that such a change would miss him as well as hundreds of thousands of other players.

Business wise this would not make sense. Upsetting and alienating thousands of potential returning players does not strike me as a smart move for NC Soft when the benefits are so small. I have never heard of a player quitting because they couldn't get a name they wanted. I know in RL two other players who would never return to the game if their main character's name was taken away and from the response in other threads it is apparent there are many more in that camp.
  16. This would be a major mistake for the Devs.

I owned a comic and game store from 1994 to 2002. I knew it was probably going to be a good day whenever a well dressed, new customer in his mid 20's walked in the door. Often it would turn out that they had last read comics 4-8 years earlier right before they went off to college and between the lack of time due to studying & socializing and the cost of college leaving them a total of $2.42 cents a month for their hobbies they had cut out there comic habit.

But having graduated and landing that $50,000+ a year job these customers returned to their roots with thousands of dollars a month to spend. They would open up a saver for the 30+ titles that they had always wanted and would buy every back issue for the past 4-8 years that I had in stock. There were several times when the total would hit in the thousands of dollars.

I was around long enough to see the same thing happen with teens who had played Magic the Gathering. They started returning in 1999 and would invariably want those cards they could never get as teenagers. I could count on any Lotus, Mox, or other Power of 9 card to sell quickly on those days for $200-$1000+.

CoH has been around long enough to see this same scenario. Kids who played between 2004-2008 are now graduating college and with the ability for old players to catch up and buy all those veteran powers the Devs have the potential for some fantastic sales. I would not be at all surprised if a good percentage of the the current market success is specifically from players, 22-26 years of age who have been absent for 4+ years. If this is the case then every year a new batch of college graduates will enter the work force and return to Paragon City after a 4 year absence.

That is they will return as long as their favorite characters that they have fond memories of haven't had their name taken away.

As a side note one of those customers is still a friend and played CoH from 2004 until he married and had a son in 2009. I expect him to return with his son sometime around 2015-2017 when his son is old enough to start playing, assuming the Devs don't take any actions to alienate him.

Are you referring to some sort of tax from the European Unions formation/expansion or a local tax for your country? Does this tax also affect manga?

Here in the US manga is quite popular. In fact I will be going to Fanime in the Bay Area, a 5 day convention with attendance probably ranging from 15,000-30,000 people. 15 years ago the same con pulled in less then 1000. 10 years ago 2-3K, and 5 years ago it broke 10K so anime is growing in popularity here as well.

In turn the distributor - mostly Diamond IIRC - tends to want like the independent retailer because they can then encourage them to take more stock etc.

So I'd suggest that not finding them in general outlets is not necessarily the best metric with which to measure popularity.
What do you mean by "encourage them to take more stock etc"? Do they use a carrot or a stick?

I owned several comic stores here in California about 10 years ago. At that time Diamond encouraged us with carrots by giving larger discounts the more we ordered (something like 35% for $400-$999, 40% for $1000-$2000, etc) as well as special exclusive pieces (Alternate covers, Life Size Inflatable Spiderman, etc) if we ordered 25-100 of a particular title.

Other product distributors we dealt with would use a stick to "encourage" you by shipping you 0% of your order if they only received say 50% of the product and would instead make sure their large accounts got the product first.

How does Diamond encourage the outlets over in your neck of the woods?

Another question if you can answer it, When we produced an advertisement and used a DC or Marvel character we would be reimbursed for the percentage of the advert that the character used. In other words if the bottom quarter of a $300 newspaper advert had Spiderman than Marvel thru Diamond would reimburse us for $75.

Not according to Paragon Wiki. The developers have had Primal mirror our world in many aspects. This seems to be one of those cases since according to Paragon wiki...

"1945...August - Nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.[28] Japan surrenders soon after, but the Imperial Wind [A super powered group] refuses to stop fighting."

Substitute "Imperial Wind" with Extremist Japanese Elements and this is exactly what happened in our world where Hirohito surrendered but some military elements refused and either continued to fight or committed suicide.

Superhero events have been added to our history to make Primal history, but little if any events in the real world have been removed from Primal Earths WWII.

Notice that Battle for Britain, Pearl Harbor, Pacific Theater, DDay, and End of War all take place in the same place at the same time as ours.

  23. It occurred to me as I wrote my last post that unless Emperor Cole was an idiot he must have studied the history of his opponents to see how they fought and to learn how they waged war. That history would have shown him exactly what fate awaited the last Emporer who fought against and was defeated by America and her allies.

That emperor and his people who at the height of the war were hated far more then Cole. An emperor who's military attacked America by surprise during a time of peace and who's military murdered hundreds of thousands of civilians and war prisoners. An emperor with enough authority to order his military and civilians to fight to the end, destroying any thing of value and likely would have seen that order carried out. An emperor who was told by the enemy that only an unconditional surrender would be acceptable and who knew that such a surrender meant he might well be executed by the the enemy.

Emperor Hirohito of Japan surrendered August 15th, 1945. He was allowed to remain emperor of his country. Japan within 20 years of the surrender was once again a major power and within 30 years was winning the automotive trade war with America. 44 years later when Hirohito died he did so knowing that his former enemy had become one of his countries staunchest allies and that Japan was arguably one of the ten most successful countries in the world. Now 66 years later Japanese culture has saturated America. We buy Toyota, Eat sushi, Read manga, and play Pokemon.

If I am in that situation then the answer is YES! I surrender and assist the Primals in whatever way I can to defeat our common enemy.

My people are my concern and are the ones who have claim to the city, the art, the building, the culture, and the resources. Not I.

I have two enemies. Hamidon and the Primals.

Hamidon has already wiped out most of my civilization and given the chance will gladly destroy every remaining person from my planet.

The Primals, are made of people like mine and many have accepted the surrender of my soldiers, taken them prisoner and kept them in conditions better then or at least no worse than the ones I have kept my own citizens in.

The Primals who in final days of this war have spent time and resources that could have been used to bring me down, have instead used them to give my people shelter from the final battle and my true enemy Hamidon.

No I would not throw a temper tantrum and destroy everything, I would negotiate a surrender and do my best to make sure my people had a home, and that Hamidon, the first enemy, the enemy who had started all of this was defeated.
  25. While "free and easy server transfers" substituting for a "cross server trial system", might have advantages they must be weighed against what others have mentioned as well as the following problems.

    Super Group Effects
Since transferring results in you being removed from your SG this poses a number of problems.

Loss of Enhancements, Inspirations and Salvage.
Since you are no longer a member of the super group you will loose access to your items. This would require finding another SGG member who is online and can invite you back AND promote you to the proper rank. For some SGs or players who play at odd times this could be quite an ordeal.

Loss of Super Group Prestige, and Time in group.
It is natural for people to want to show off their achievements of having earned the most prestige or being the oldest member of the SG. If you transfer you loose that distinction.

Loss of Rank and possibly even membership:
In order to rejoin an SG you need another SG member with the proper rank to be on at the same time and invite you. A friend of mine spent over a month trying to meet with her SG's senior members just to get her rank and privileges raised when she had met the prestige and time requirements for her promotion and access to the more secure bins.

    Global effects.

    Change of community:
This has both positive and negative effects, but it needs to be considered. Allowing unlimited transfers with no cost may well change the feel of servers and cause a migration and consolidation of certain types of players. Examples of this would be RPers, Villains, Praetorians, Badgers, PvPers, etc

In fact an example of this can be seen with PvPers. There have been numerous attempts to consolidate PvPers since at least I9 on too just one server, but one of the big road blocks has been the cost to transfer servers. If players could have freely tranfered there characters it is quite possible that PvP would have consolidated as early as I9 to just 1-3 servers leaving the other servers with NO PvPers. One might argue that freely transferring back and forth would negate the need to consolidate, but that is ONLY true if the issues I mentioned with Super Groups are solved since the importance of SG membership, ranking and enhancement access tended to be quite high within the PvP community.

This could of course be seen as a positive result by many including the Devs since as an example every villain being on the same server increases the chance of finding team mates Red Side. However unless new players are clearly informed of such server specific communities they might log into another server and literally never see another villain and assume no one plays them.

Massive over crowding of servers during events.
On Protector during the Praetorian invasion of Atlas Park when the Devs were involved we spawned 2 instances of Atlas. I shudder at the thought of literally thousands of players transferring their characters to Protector just so they can meet the Devs and get the free name addition that was handed out.

    Other reasons.

Eliminates a source of revenue for the game:
Server transfers make money for the game and are used as a reward for VIP. Eliminating them will mean a loss of revenue from the ones that are sold and a reduction or loss of revenue from what ever they replace the reward to VIPs with. If they fail to replace the reward then they will loose goodwill and quite possibly some VIP memberships.

Server transfer don’t allow players to easily find Trial/TF groups.
The current system appears to be similar to the LFG tab. If you want in on an “Underground Trial” you select “UG” and wait continue fighting, marketing or whatever you enjoy for the 20 or so minutes until one starts on one of the 14? servers. If instead we relly on server transfers you and the 7 other solo players will need to hop between 14 servers hoping to find the league with 10 players looking for just 2 more to get started. In this case most likely the league will start as soon as they get 2 more players leaving 5 players without a trial OR worse still the league falls apart since none of the 7 players bothered to check the right server in the right zone or channel that had the league forming.

    Loss of Name:
Yes you said “what if”, but unless there is a solution to this problem then it probably doesn’t matter if any of the other reasons I and others have mentioned are solved.

    Reference:
Here is an example of just one recent thread dealing with PvPer migration and server transfer. Pre I-13 this was a far more heated topic.

Can someone explain to me the allure of cross-server teaming, as an idea?

What I'm unclear of is this: What problem does cross-server teaming address, that inexpensive (free is better) and immediate server transfers doesn't? Assume you could solve "The Name Problem" (which I agree is an immense, intractable mess of a problem, but pretend there's a mythical everyone's-happy solution to it, for a moment).

I'm asking because the Survey seemed to imply that cross-server teaming was potentially a Next Big Thing for the game, into which the Devs were willing / able to pour not-inconsiderable work.

While I understand that server transfers are probably a current revenue stream, it seems like an absolute waste of time to me. Can someone who chose / suggested cross-server teaming as a high priority explain why, or why cross-server teaming is a "better" solution than reduced-priced transfers?
