Random PuG last night running PI missions on my rogue Widow. First mission was easy, Carnies and there were only 3 of us, so no bother.
Second was a timed mission, we bulked up to a 7 man hotch-potch of various squishies and scrappers. Turns out to be +3 DE. My Widow got eaten alive within seconds, as did the Scrapper and Stalker (damn Eminators). So the Domi offers to switch to his tank, and a second tank joins as well (and I flipped builds to my Fort for the AOE).
Mission becomes a steamrollering juggernaught of destruction, two nice aggressive (and non-bossy) tanks sharing aggro (often splitting into a "I'll jump into the next bunch with one or two others, generally me and the DP Blaster so we can soften them up, while the rest clean up this lot"). -
Quote:For those who roll, it's because you can get 5 randoms for 1 A-merit. The LotG 7.5's and the various uniques, plus a variety of other orange recipes, cost 2 A-merits each. Others just cost 1, but you can't get more than one thing of choice with a single A-merit. Rolling randomly, you have a chance at getting multiple good things. You also have a chance at getting the kind of dreck the OP found in his tray after rolling, though. It only takes one random roll with 2 LotG 7.5's and a Miracle: +recovery to make up for a lot of trash rolls, but that's the gambler's fallacy talking. You have a LOT more trash rolls than you do rolls with even one of the truly valuable recipes, let alone multiples - but that's what people are rolling for.
No, they do not.
Ah, I see. That makes sense. I thought it was 1 roll per merit.
I suppose given the recipe exchange rate (50 merits + 20 million is it?) could kinda make sense, 20 million for 2.5 rolls. -
Can't you just buy specific Recipies for 1 or 2 A-Merits?
I mean why roll 5 when you could buy 2 LOTG or Miracles and 1 Performance Shifter or Achilles Heel, or am I misunderstanding how they work?
Why would you roll them? Do they have a chance of giving purples via rolls? -
Quote:With i19 on the way and a bit of a slot-crunch coming since you'll have 3 new power choices but no new slots Taunt makes a lot of sense for a Brute. It's a very handy tool for certain Brutes, especially those ones which like enemies close to fuel their buff auras (WP, Inv and Shield). Most brutes do not take taunt. It is a useful tool, with many applications, but it wastes a power choice and in truth Brutes do not need it. The only possible desperate need is when you are in a large group and people keep hogging your agro. Then taunt will circle them around you for more fun.
A comment was made above about Brutes not taking the damage tanks can, so no taunt. There is a lot of truth to that. There is also a lot of truth to Brutes being the premier meat shield in the game, the only one redside for a very long time, and many builds (Stone, Invul, when tweaked a bit, Willpower when outright built out like a billionaire can do, and Dark/dark also taking a few billion to set right) will tank very seriously. Stone and Dark will generally only work at 38+, and Will shines as a easy tanking experience in mid 20s to mid 30s when the tweaks need to be seriously done. Invul Brute makes a fun redside tank for everything except Psi missions, although you will sacrifice some damage output for a solid tank build. Of these 4 that I mention only Will and Stone would generally take taunt, even tanking.
The general rule for a Brute is to run in first, survive the alpha while it pegs your rage bar, and smash. Working with a good Dom can spoil you, cause they hardly need you except for mop up. This run in 1st tactic will work with almost all PUGs, no taunt needed, right up until the team can no longer handle the spawns at all. Smart squishies use the brute as a ghetto troller, getting all the mob attention, then doing their thing.
The -Range is also pretty handy for encouraging things to get closer (and to stop paying attention to that Scrapper and to hit you instead for that lovely Fury).
It's not a must-have but it's effectiveness out of the box can make it a useful pick. -
Quote:Given the wording of the Ochos post that's not actually that cynical of you, especially considering the Party Pack emotes and how they were available on Test for everyone in GR Beta.Very pleased to see these are coming "as standard" and not part of a paid-for expansion but the cynic in me does wonder if that's because they were leaked somehow.
They look good though
Or maybe I'm just as cynical as you -
Quote:This is an excellent point. HP bonuses >>> Regen bonuses for Willpower. Why? Because the regen bonuses are typically 10%, which is a drop in the ocean for the average WP Brute with a few enemies around him. You won't even notice them. Whereas more HP means a bigger "alpha cushion" coupled with more HP/S regenerated. The key to WP is to play the set like old school invulnerability. Your survival is dependent on the number of critters around you just like your fury building is easier when you got more mobs attempting to attack you. What I focus on with WP is HP buffs which will make the regeneration better. Set bonus and accolades are key to this. Then I focus on melee defense once I get as much HP as I can since you get almost no smash/lethal defense. Pretty much all the powers are useful in some way. Strength of will makes it where you dont need tough and weave but with the issue 19 changes you can easily squeeze it in without having to sacrifice much. Personally I would hold off on respecing till then unless you got a respec in the bank already.

Quote:What pets can slot tends to be erratic at best. For example Singularity cannot slot Immob, Slow or Hold set IOs, but Dark Servant can slot everything you'd expect (including Immob and Hold). Warshades Extracted Essenses cannot slot Knockback sets, but Singy and Phantasm can.<_< I'll have to Frankenslot them and put in two generic endMod IOs.
Someone really needs to look at them again because at the moment there's no rhyme or reason behind them at the moment really. -
Remember, come i19 you'll get Stamina and health for free, so that gives you room to squeeze in Tough and Weave as well, each stacks up well with your Resist and Defense toggles respectively.
I'd aim to have them circa 30 or 35 or so (which should be fairly achievable given you'll have no need to pick Stamina, it'll just be handed to you).
Strenght of Will is pretty handy, if you can afford it. It's great for when you're about to jump into a tough spawn and take a heavy alpha. Plus the crash is pretty managable. -

Oooh. Didn't know this. Very interesting (and lots of potential fun being Mr Bowling Ball when one is bored)

Quote:If you want the super-dooper-uber items in the game you've to work to earn them.Sadly, I can't agree with your side of the argumentas a casual gamer myself, who spends most of his time studying, working, or picking up chicks, I can't devote all the time in the world to getting special digital items with purple names. The time I do spend playing is spent having a good time with people I've met who are of a nice sort, and whom I enjoy beating up villains with. Your argument suggests that not only should we be paying 15 USD per month, but we should dedicate all of our time to the game as well.
Personally I would enjoy one or two breaks, such as in the form of day jobs, that increases chances for rare salvage dependent on the amount of time you playthe less frequent you play, the (slightly) better chances you have of getting rare items. This means I could enjoy the game on par with those who play more often than me, without having to sacrifice more time, money, or chicks.
There's nothing in the PvE game that particularly requires them though, and there are lots of ways (including merits and the new a-merit system) which will let you focus towards earning any special items you do want at your own pace.
Since moving to the US side I've made myself a few pretty nice items (Luck of the Gambler unique, Miracle unique, Steadfast Protection Unique) from doing a Citedal TF (got the miracle from that as a random roll), just playing the game (the Steadfast popped in at some point from me just playing my SoA) or running tip and morality missions (LOTG, along with two other rare recipies).
Did I get a bit lucky here, sure. I could have gotten Crap of the Hunters instead. But as a fairly casual player myself (maybe 5-8 hours a week, an hour or two in the evenings a few nights a week) and who alts a lot I don't particurly think I deserve or need Purples in any way whatsoever, especially compared to someone who focusing on playing their level 50 and running 50s only content solo with a mind towards purpling themselves out -
Quote:I'm a bit confused by how SS works. Doesn't debuffing an enemy with 'cane / dropping a LS cause the superspeed to surpress for a few seconds?I went with Super Speed for several reasons. (a) The Stealth in Super Speed combines with Steamy Mist for full Invisibility -- no stealth IO needed. This helps all through the game, but especially in later levels when you want to lead Singy in to be your aggro magnet. (b) Super Speed is great for "herdicaning," turning on Hurricane and running around the outside of a group of foes to debuff their ToHit and bunch them up or push them to a particular location for AoEs (like Freezing Rain) or trapping against a wall. (c) Super Speed is great for running in, casting Lightning Storm and running out. (d) If I need flight, I can always use a Raptor Pack/Jet Pack.
Teaming on a Grav/Storm is a bit of a challenge. You need to be aware of your teammates' powers and work with them, often limiting what you can do. If you are going to use Wormhole, make sure everyone knows -- as you can really anger the Blaster who just fired off his Nuke after all the bad guys disappeared. Constantly running Hurricane is not a good idea when you have several melee teammates who rely upon keeping foes near to buff their Defense (Invuln), Damage (Shield) or Regen (Willpower). I found that my main contribution to teams is to use the Freezing Rain+Crushing Field combo, then take out a few individuals. The knockback powers have limited use in most teams. -
Quote:This is happening to a lot of people. Some things which *might* work (they help sometimes, for others they do nothing)I have to relog everytime i click on something. How do i fix it?
I use firefox.
Use the http://boards.cityofheroes.com url to access the boards
Wipe your Cache in Firefox (Tools -> Clear Private Data and make sure Cookies are ticked) to clear out any corrupt cookies that might be in your system. You should probably do that and then completely stop and restart Firefox. -
Quote:If you look at the page you're send to (via a sendRedirect) you'll see it's because they've incorrectly entered the sendRedirect URL you are supposed to be sent to. They forgot the http:// at the start of http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/ser...er_status.htmlI don't know if it's just me being used to live a rather easy life or if I really do have a point here.
But, am I the only who find it incredible annoying, that when the servers are down, you're being giving the website http://www.cityofheroes.com/servers/index.html to go and check the server status, but the page aren't found?
I find it a little troublesome, cause it's hard to figure out wether there's a server problem, when the server will be up again or if it's your ISP screwing you over. I know now that it is thursday which means maintenance so that's most likely it (although we had that tuesday as well).
Would love if we could be given the information that we're being directed to and not just a "page not found".
I'm PMing Av to let her know, hopefully it won't take too long for the Web team to fix it. -
Quote:YupIf memory serves, you can serve Hatchet his comeuppance in the later {loyalist} arcs.
You just don't get it signposted for you, which I personally kinda liked in terms of me as a player making an unprompted choice about how my character behaved.
In my case I worked with the Wardens, the second arc of which in Imperial pitted me directly against the sort of Crusader antics he had walked away from in the middle of Hatchets arc. -
Quote:Actually there is a choice which you can make (and my character did). Abandon the arc and have nothing more to do with Hatchet, instead go above ground and talk to Jessica whatshername and do her far more agreeable arc instead. There are several places in Hatchet's arc that ask you go in to the 'Super-black-slaughter-fest-Kill-o-Rama-3000' territory. Feeding live humans to the ghouls is a good example. Yet, despite the horror of the arc, there's NO PLACE AT ALL to turn around and bust Hatchet, Vagabond, or Wardog for what they're doing. This would make an ideal place to drop out of the Resistance and join the Loyalists, but there's no choice given.
Or talk to one of the Loyalist contacts instead and start their arcs. You can quite easily do exactly what you mention above, you just run off and do it, there's no need for the game to spoonfeed you the choice. -
Quote:Actually this isn't really true. The ongoing concept that these sets are useless from a lot of the player-base makes them very good value indeed for levelling characters. 2 Acc/Dam, 2 Dam/Recharge gives you basically a 40% recharge boost over the traditional 1 acc, 3 damage 4 slot set-up./Signed.
There is pretty much no reason to use TAoE sets than Positron's or Ragnarok because the bonuses for Air Burst and Detonation are not useful for just about anything.
The useless set bonuses rather ironically make these sets somewhat useful, since they get disregarded by a lot of the playerbase.
That being said adding a few more Targeted IO sets wouldn't hurt at all either. -
Quote:Actually I sorta agree with you here. Things like the unlockable weapon models are very annoying.I wouldn't have a problem with that, actually. Any reward that's not a costume piece, be it unique or otherwise, is fine in my book to be given out in an event. Unique enhancements or recipes, special powers, special titles - you name it. Quite literally anything that's not a costume piece is fine by me as a reward for an event.
But that's largely because of how reward mechanics work with costume design. IF unlocked costumes placed themselves in my editor at creation, I would have no problem with busting my *** to unlock them. Once. But since they have to be unlock on every character every time, and long after creation, to boot, that is not a good way to do things.
But things like the Cossie IO items I don't really mind since I can always Gleemail those to the intended character. I don't mind waiting until level 2 or 4 and going to the tailor to equip them (did it with my Plant/Empath controller).
I do mind having to wait 35 levels and then grinding Rikti to get a glowie sword, or even worse deciding on making a Roman warrior and realising I've to wait until endgame before I'd actually be able to create him properly. -
Quote:They're a part of i19, which is even better than a craftable cossie reward to me.Is there anything in this game you don't moan about? Personally I love the events and judging by the number of other people who take part in them, you're pretty unique in universally decrying them.
I'm with Canifax, I hope they are a craftable cossie reward.
I'm happy about this!
I do think in an MMO that any events they have should be rewarded with proper unique rewards though, not just some inf and merits (or just badges, I don't care about badges and they are such a binary thing, once you've gotten it the event can be forgotten about). Things like versions of the IOs they gave out with preorders for certain vendors (Gamestop was it?), one of the things I liked about [Another MMO which featured scantily clad Dark Elves and thankfully not scanitly clad Chaos as factions] was the PQ system which let you earn decent items for your levelling character from doing them.
Mind you there is admittedly a fine line in those events where players can just not be bothered with some of them, either due to a lack of server population or a perception that they weren't worthwhile.
Such systems I like when they don't require too many people but you can just stumble across them whilest wandering around the outside world. They can really give a feel that a world is alive and well populated.
Obviously different people will quite rightly think the exact opposite though [Insert quote from random 80s comedy about world not moving to the beat of just one drum here] -
Quote:Caltrops affect is technically a "Fear". (The game refers to it as "Afraid"). There's two types of Fear effect in the game (3 if you count "Avoid"), Afraid, which is the one which triggers "Run Away" and Terrified, which is the "Stand and quake" effect.well, catrops have always caused scatter effect, but not fear.
Your mortar is probably causing that behavior. If its accidental programming, maybe the there's a disconnect w/ the mobs getting debuffed by an "object" instead of a player.
If it is purposeful, its to spread out those who are affected, and counter the chance of the same mobs gettind debuffed continuously by an object... alot of objects are just pbaoe... the mortar is range targeted....
Caltrops Afraid effect only lasts 1 second though, so it wears off a second after they run out of the patch (I'm not sure why it doesn't just use "Avoid" like Rain of Fire or Ice Storm).
What is happening when they continue to run, or run when hit by a DoT is their morale breaking. (maybe in the case of Caltrops the "Afraid" effect gives a higher chance of a morale break, which means they keep on running). Castle outlines it here, and a lot of players are reporting that it seems to be happening a bit too often for their liking alright. -
Quote:Much as I personally like messing with IOs (more for Frankenslotting) I have to agree here. Unless someone specifically asks how something should be slotted I prefer just to describe the power. If someone asks how it should be slotted I assume they mean whilest levelling and will respond with an SO/Common IO slotting, (or a combination of cheap frankenslotting, I have to hold my hands up and admit that can't help myself there).I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but this isn't news to me. Most people lost their ability to give me advice practically the moment I9 hit. It has become almost impossible for me to ask what a power's good for, what to slot in it or how it works without people climbing over each other to tell me about "set mules" or how it's good for this or that set bonus or how it helped them softcap their defences and suchforth. It's gotten to the point where I no longer want to ask for advice because I'm tired of explaining and re-explaining why I don't do Set Inventions.
Telling me to 6 slot my level 28 Scrapper with Makos Bite in every attack to softcap defenses is pointless, as is mentioning purples or HOs.
It's also the main reason I ignore most posted Mids builds, except to point out the pros and cons of the power choices. -
Yay. This is excellent news!

Quote:It flings them around, which is slightly annoying. There's no way to change knockback into knockdown reliably.Has anyone played Grav/Storm to 50?
I'm curious about how this combo would work. The immob doesn't prevent knockup, but does it turn knockback from tornado and thunderstorm into knockup or do they just fling mobs around?
Quote:Is the ability to throw stuff into a corner and hurricane it as awesome as it sounds?
But Illusion/Storm wins the "most chaotic" award though, simply because of the almighty mess (and noise) Phantom Army and Spectral Terror add. -
Quote:Don't agree with this really. The only reason I'd recommend reading them in any sort of "sub-series" order is to know what's going on. Stand-alones like Small Gods or whatever can be read any time you like really.I love each and every book in the Discworld continuum and, in my view, there is only one order in which they should be read which is chronological order. Any other order is disrespecting the author.
Quote:I have every book he ever published and haven't regretted reading any of them. Some of them (if not all) I've read more than once. "Thief of time" is one of my all time favourites, but then again, so is "Strata".
The witches are brilliant as well, possibly my favourite characters in the entire series. (I won't rest until I see Miriam Margoyles play Nanny Ogg!). -
Quote:Like I said make em cossie IOs like the myriad other cossie IOs we have. That way you can keep em and send them onto any other characters you have.I'd rather be able to do a one time purchase than earn it for every character I have, let alone the characters I've made after said events are over.
My absolute preference is for them to be available as part of i19 however.
