Not sure about the SHIELD support angle. Kinda undercuts Spidey's downtrodden status.

Quote:Well if you look at the arrow it's more of a grappling hook deal.Another Link of Hawkeye
1:21 seconds in...doing the whole hand against the cheek. So far, it looks like the one author is basing it off the scene of Hawkeye falling out of a window while trying to fire off an arrow before...you know...he falls to his death. -
Not sure why I feel optimistic about this movie but I do. I felt this way about the latest Transformers movie, and while that wasn't great, it still had what I think was the best action of the series.

I'm excited about this whole opportunity for Whedon. He's been given this huge chance to show everybody what he can do and I sincerely doubt he's going to disappoint. This is going to open a lot of doors for him and hopefully the good mix of action, comedy, and characterization that he's known for sets a new standard for these kind of superhero films and lights a fire under WB to get their act together the right way.

I'm just liking the look of it a whole lot more. And I'm kind of a sucker for superstrength fights so seeing someone getting rammed through a pillar piqued my interest.

It's somewhat depressing to just watch a single episode of Lost on Netflix and see how superior the acting and handling of an ensemble cast are compare to The Walking Dead.

So, I haven't seen much discussion about this upcoming movie on these boards, and the trailer almost prompted me to necro my own thread about good trailers deceiving us into seeing mediocre or bad movies. But do you guys think that's what's happening here? Free from their attempts to recreate the classic, are the folks behind this movie going to come up with something truly epic? Or is a 2-minute blend of Greek mythology and rock music just that intoxicating?
To me, this movie seems to be more GoW-like in its scale and style, which I think is a good thing. It kind of makes me think that people would be more excited about this movie if they skipped the remake and started with this sequel instead.

Lothic, I'd actually say that what The Walking Dead is doing and has done so far has been undermining the kind of ensemble character work that made Lost so successful. I bring this up specifically because of the "island" reference. I think fans of Lost could agree that the show was prone to stumbles when the exploration of the mystery as to the island's purpose became more important than the characters stranded on it. Even though The Walking Dead hasn't turned the zombies' origins into a great mystery to be explored, it's become clear that the writers want mystery-induced drama to maintain a presence (Jenner's whisper, the ominous barn, etc). The problem here is that we aren't given the same quality of characterization and presentation to forgive the lack of delving into the background mysteries or the blatant introduction and wringing out of those mysteries.

Saw this yesterday. I thought it was fairly entertaining. There were times where I was genuinely surprised at how much it seemed everyone bought into this movie, from the amount of CGI that no doubt shot up the budget like a rocket to the lines that were at least half Martian verbage. At the very least you can say that the movie has some heart and imagination for such a big budget spectacle. It could have used some polish in areas, but it did quite a bit right and received laughs and even applause for all the right moments.
Still, with this CGI epic that's essentially introducing a new generation to a space-based franchise I can't help but be reminded of how WB bastardized Green Lantern by giving it neither heart or imagination and I worry about the future of DC movies post-Bat-Nolan. -

Quote:I'm not sure that's what we're seeing from the clips. It looks more to me like Iron Man and Cap against Thor for some reason, most likely upon their first meeting, because in the trailer it would've been a perfect opportunity for some snippets of Iron Man fighting Cap when Tony is quoting Fury's assessment, particularly the "doesn't play well with others" part.I suspect the three way fight between Iron Man, Captain America and Thor comes about due to the whole "who's in command in the field" thing. I suspect it gets decided when Captain gets a hold of Mjolnir (mewmew) and can actually wield it, even if it's no more than picking it up and handing it to Thor. It's the only way I would expect Thor to accept him as the leader.
I do hope that they reserve Cap wielding Mjolnir and Cap saying, "Avengers Assemble!" for the movie experience, though, because those are bound to happen. -
Quote:Also let's not forget that Whedon is the one who gave us essentially the best single-shot introduction to an ensemble cast ever in the beginning of Serenity. In a matter of minutes we knew exactly what those characters were about and were left with just enough hinting of their character arcs and relationships that you couldn't help but want to see more.Joss Whedon is not known for directing anonymous characters with no personality. Even the trailer seems to suggest there are lots of dialog-heavy parts to the movie designed to showcase the characters.
As you say, we already have the prequels, we already know these characters. In fact I believe they recognized that an Avengers movie *couldn't* be made without all these prequels, specifically because we needed to get over the "origin of" parts of all the characters because it would slow things down too much.
The trailer alone shows a confrontation between Loki and Stark, and Loki and Fury, and I think its going to be Loki that becomes the linchpin for the plot: it will ultimately be each of those characters having to face Loki, not just a big shootout.
"How desperate you are that you that you call on such lost creatures to defend you?" That suggests to me that Loki has by then become familiar in some way with all of the Avengers. Fury is the one that brings them together, Loki will be the one that tries to rip them apart. That dynamic seems exactly up Whedon's alley. -

Quote:I have a feeling that Hawkeye and Black Widow will be given moments of such badassery that the folks who are saying this now are going to be eating their words later.Looking forward to this big time, but I still roll my eyes a bit every time I see that shot of the entire group as the camera spins around them, waiting for Iron Man to show up. You have Big Hulking Man, Big Hulking Man, little guy with a bow, Big Hulking Man, little girl with a pistol.
I know that Hawkeye and Black Widow are talented fighters, but they're still bringing rocks and sticks to an Epic-level fight. At least give her a bigger gun -
Why do folks keep assuming it's the Midgard Serpent? o.O
-
Quote:Yeah I'm pretty sure it's her.You think? Does not look right to me, but I could be wrong.
I have a buddy who works in the film industry. If I could catch up with him, he might know.
Also. -
Also, looks like that actress was Ashley Johnson
-
She looks familiar to me as well. Noticed that when the earlier trailers came out, but didn't really look into it. I can picture her crying in some other role I've seen her in, which makes me think it was probably some minor role in Law & Order or something, or perhaps a minor role in some chick flick, but can't really narrow it down more than that.

Quote:I fear that WB won't have the patience to do it like Marvel did and they're going to **** it up so bad.I have high hopes for this movie because not only do I like the Avengers but if this thing ends up making a boatload of money then maybe the chances for a long-awaited Justice League movie will be that much greater too.

I don't mean him. I doubt that it'll just be Loki at the head of this army that came out of nowhere without any leadership of their own, unless there's some kind of mind-control doohickey involved.
-
Quote:I'm thinking alien robot. Doesn't seem big enough or serpentine enough to be the Midgard Serpent. As to that thing at the end when IM said he was bringing the party to them.....alien monster, alien robot, or the midgard serpent? Pick one. If it is the midgard serpent that could be bad for THOR given the prophecies of Ragnarok.
The only thing that worries me about this movie is how Loki's army comes into play. I doubt Whedon's just going to have Loki show up with an army without giving them any kind of motivation or background, so there may be some degree of shoe-horning involved and whatever time spent delving into that is going to take away from Stark one-liners and Hulk smashy smashy. -
So . . . did anybody actually see this movie?
