Quote:I'd have to agree, such sentiments do not exactly jibe with our friendly community mantras. And, y'know--come on, ya gotta know--a low attitude like that says more about the OP than it does about the roleplayers. All of my characters are RP characters. But I'll note here that my team search comment often reads something like "RP, non-RP friendly". And one of my best, long-time pals in the game is a complete power-gamer--one who respects differing playstyles. THAT is City of X at its best. This attitude is greatly disappointing, as it amounts to "I'm more important than you because you're playing the game wrong, so I have the right to ruin your fun however I like." And we used to have such a friendly community.
Actually, the vast majority of RPers are role-playing in missions (playing the GAME). Still, even though I'm not one of the barflies at Pocket D, I've spent, collectively, hours listening to their conversations. Some bad, some worse. But I've also eavesdropped on lots of smart role-play chatter--highly talented improvisation for after-action reports.
Most MMO "RPGs" do not have significant RP communities to begin with, which makes the role-playing community on Virtue noteworthy. Maybe even worth preserving, but at least worth tolerating. But that some people have zero patience for gameplay outside their narrow-minded preferences does not surprise me at all, nor the developers I'm assuming, judging by the existence of the ignore filter. -
Somewhere in this thread I said I was going to wait patiently for a hot fix instead of freaking out and messing with my computer (which isn't broken, contrary to Issue 20's bug affecting SP2 users). Now I'm glad I decided to wait.
The hot fix will be in tomorrow, says Dev Zwillinger.

Thank you Paragon Studios! -
Quote:Thanks for the clarification, that explains why I've seen a few updates. No, they don't. Microsoft may, on occasion, decide to backport critical fixes where it's trivial to do so, but they do not have any formal support for SP2 in any form and have not since July 2010. Unless you're one of the few enterprises willing to pay vast amounts of money for custom support contracts from Microsoft, your chances of having SP2 machines that are up-to-date and secure are effectively nill.
For some crazy reason (yes, I know why) they're continuing to support XP SP3 until 2014, but after that, no more XP support of any kind. -
Might try this as a last resort if Paragon Studios can't fix the problem, but doubtful as it might introduce more problems than SP3 could. Windows 7 will be my PC's next upgrade, not SP3. Since that isn't happening in the near future, Issue 20 might really be the endgame (for now). At least they'll still have me subscribed for the Vanguard Pack.
I appreciate the effort you put into this, Leandro. -
You made my point more succinctly. If reasons to upgrade to SP3 were piling up on me, that would be a different story. But they're not, and a seven-year-old game shouldn't require it when bleeding-edge games don't require it. I'm not going to risk giving myself a potential avalanche of problems for a workaround to a problem Paragon Studios can hopefully fix.

Quote:I was kind of wondering why people were doing that on official game forums. Especially when Microsoft offers its own alternative solution. Anyone who doesn't want to install SP3 using Windows Update can go here to download it and install it manually. This area of the Microsoft website is just offering a manual download and will not ask to scan your computer first. Feel free to ignore the bit at the bottom that dissuades single-computer users from the manual install. That bit is there solely to persuade users to visit Windows Update. Alternatively, you may go here if you want to download a CD image file to burn to disc.Folks,
Two things
1. We're currently investigating this issue.
2. Please refrain from posting instructions, advice or anecdotal comments regarding the pirating of software or digital licenses on these forums. As fellow software developers, we consider it a professional courtesy to not encourage or foster an environment where this type of activity is discussed.
Thanks

However, I'm going to chime in as a SP2 user who is waiting to hear back about a possible hot fix. I am fully able to install SP3 if I choose. I never installed it in the first place because it was superfluous considering what my personal computer gets used for, and SP2 users still receive critical security updates (contrary to popular belief). The differences between SP2 and SP3 shouldn't be related to problems running MOST NEWER games, let alone an older game like City of Heroes. I will be upgrading to Windows 7 at some point, not SP3. SP3 is a piece of garbage that sometimes causes so many problems after installation that people are required to rollback or reinstall Windows XP entirely. -

The documentation of the offending function can be found here: GetLogicalProcessorInformation Function (Windows)
Notice the Requirements specifications at the bottom:). I'm still going to wait until tomorrow before installing SP3. I never installed it in the first place because it was superfluous considering what my personal computer gets used for, and SP2 users still receive security updates.

Quote:Well, if you read (more) carefully you'll see that we're not really at a disagreement.Except that's it's not necessarily "tacked on" with little regard for existing lore. I don't think "Primal fired the first shot" is synonymous with "Primal invaded first". I think a lot of people take it to mean that and given how little information we were given I can't really extrapolate from that that we invaded first.
I'm betting you're correct and the story's going to be airtight in the end. But people basically seem to be worried that the Going Rogue story is going to be the equivalent of an over-hyped, over-long "villain of the week" arc, when it should be more akin to Marvel's "Civil War", something far-reaching and significant. So my point was that a new batch of comics would have been the perfect thing to help the fans "get" everything leading up to Going Rogue, and help establish more confidence in fans for the reach of the story. MMORPG dev teams sometimes have "story bible" references that are at least hundreds of pages long. -
I feel similarly about City of Heroes as I do about the comic books I read. I'm interested, engaged, invested. So I can understand some peoples frustrations who have been playing the game for years and are more familiar with every nook and cranny of the lore (I don't even have my two year badge yet). "Tacked on" (other peoples words) content like S.A.M. doesn't bother me, because I consider it to be light drama. It broadens the story superficially, but not at the expense of fancy new villains and game mechanics. S.A.M. is like the "villains of the week" that appear in The Amazing Spider-Man comics between more serious story threads. I find those arcs very enjoyable.
However, multiverse-shaking lore like the Going Rogue storyline should not be approached superficially by writers. Of course, the "first shot" debacle could be explained easily by subterfuge (I mean HELLO, Protean's involved). In such case, getting this across in the context of the game should be achieved with clarity--but undoubtedly there will be twists and turns in the story throughout. I saw this spaghetti-like tangle of new story-lines coming when Going Rogue was first announced, and begged on the forums for Paragon Studios to create a few new comics for Going Rogue, to help illustrate and explain everything coming down the pipeline (I don't think that post got any replies from anybody).

Casual Player, all other issues aside, SP2 users should not have anything to worry about whatsoever. I could understand if there was a problem with SP1, but SP2 should not have a problem running City of Heroes. Also, the devs have not announced any restrictions, and they're fully aware that many players use older systems. However, I can see the soon-outdated launcher having problems with new updates (because we have already been warned of this in advance). So I suspect the problems in that other thread were related to players sticking to the soon-outdated launcher. Use the new launcher and you should be fine with SP2. The differences between SP2 and SP3 shouldn't be related to problems running MOST games, let alone an older game like City of Heroes.

Quote:Many people haven't yet gotten a chance to really see how fast the new launcher can suck down a big update. I think a lot of people will be put at ease when they see how fast it gets them all patched up and ready to play.I prefer the huge speed increase for downloads that come with the NCSoft launcher. I realize some people like waiting for a pre-downloader that takes forever even though I don't understand it.
There are people that enjoy enemas every day and people that enjoy being in the polar bear club but I probably will never understand that either. -

Quote:In almost every case, I agree with this. When I'm joining another person's team, I stick to the leader (the person with the star), unless and until the leader says we're following the tank. As a leader, I'm often also the tank. When I'm leading with a controller or blaster, I might direct the team to follow the tank, while I continue to direct the team's overall strategy. This is of course in situations where the team needs cohesion and direction. I usually run my teams fast and loose.I prefer "follow the star" rather than whoever happens to be able to hold aggro. For instance, often times I'm the only Tanker on a team, but I'm not the team lead. I go wherever the team leader goes. If the rest of the team goes somewhere else and cries out "Tanker, we need you!" then, well... Stick with the leader.
But sometimes things get tough. A lot of players share the opinion that teams don't require strategies, and full eight-person teams don't. Only in special cases are full teams challenging. On the other hand, many players think of a small team as a team that simply hasn't filled up yet. I lead a lot of purposefully small and medium teams, where strategies become necessary. I know how to keep a team alive and winning, but I didn't learn overnight. You need to be able to listen to your gut, and your gut needs experience. You can't learn most of what you need to know on the forums. My most trusted regular teammates don't even have forum accounts. -
But I spent time and effort on my nice pastel signature colors! You think I chose Deep Sky Blue and Salmon on a whim?! Why, you meddling rascal! You may have gotten away with it THIS TIME.

That first-hand report was nice to see, almost wish we could have seen it sooner. In some small way, ViKtoricus may have become a focal point for all poor-mannered leaders in the course of this thread. But he is still a new member to the community.
Five pages into the thread, I think our welcome mat is looking a bit too red. I have seen worse social goof-ups become likeable, regular members on my teams. Not to mention a couple of embarrassing moments of my own when I was new. -

Had an electrifying date last night. Sure, she turned out to be a villain, but she really set my heart on fire! Along. With. THE REST OF ME. Thanks, Tony! Thanks for EVERYTHING.

What Golden Girl said--No wait! Just saw your Virtueverse bio! You're on Virtue! Captain-Electric and Electric-Knight gotta team up!
Quote:It's better than sending, "Excuse me, my friends and teammates, but please do consider waiting for all team members to be ready and accompanying you before you venture farther, because the enemies may be a bit too dangerous if we separate". Extreme example used for silliness.
Not if we start a band! -
Quote:I'd never demand this attitude from someone else (and I'm sure you're stretching for sarcasm), but this is actually exactly how I feel about it when I join another person's team. If they play fast and loose, fine. But if the leader's barking orders, I stick close and do what I'm told because it's their team. When they know how to lead, I don't let my ego get in the way because these can be incredibly fun and cohesive teams. When they don't know how to lead, I find out soon enough, and excuse myself after a team wipe or three.Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but when I'm invited to a group, the leader becomes my new dad.
If dad says wait, I wait. If dad says use my best attacks, I use my best attacks. If dad says 'Will you die for me?' I shout YES and prove it. I am afraid of my dad, so I do what he says. Dad doesn't like it when I burn the bacon.
Leaders are never to be questioned. This isn't some social revolution folks. It's a game where you do what you're told, or else you will have your fun card revoked. You want to express yourself, get a diary, but it has no place in Team Chat. Team Chat is for LEADERS. Shut your mouth and do what you're told.
It's not about what works, it's about doing what you're told to do. If you do what you are told and it doesn't work, do it again and do it better this time.
Listen to your Dad. Don't burn the bacon.
