Quote:Thanks for this bind and advice! After having done both the sharkhead Hellfrost and the Cap Au Diablo Hordeling routes for 9 characters, I can definately say that the Hordeling route is my preferred method. Stick to the northern coastline between the western woods and the eastern mountain range and use a keybind. Mine was ...
/bind h "unselect$$target_custom_next enemy alive Hordeling"
Fly/Jump back and forth along the coastline hitting the "h" key and "f" to move toward the target along with a ranged power to fire off as soon as the target was in range. Keep the camera panned out as far away as possible so the targetting bind above has more area to "search". -
First of all, great idea, great cause, and I'm really impressed that a bunch of gamers here got together to do this.
Secondly, my SG has recently been on a huge base design kick. I recruited an old friend back to CoX, and his girlfriend started playing for the first time. She is absolutely in love with base design. As a result of her great efforts, we are in desperate need of a prestige bump to expand. I'd love to be one of the recipients if this is still available.
Thanks and best of luck with the charity! -
Quote:Heya Cat. Long time no chat! How's ya been. The bold is a load of exaggerated horse manure.
The italic suggest your memory is faulty.
Sorry, but its neither an exaggeration nor a faulty memory (I am old, but not that old). Its just what I am seeing on Triumph, and what the established folks here have confirmed.
A ton of members of my old SG coalition have moved a goodly portion of their characters to virtue as a result. -
Quote:That's not the case for Triumph. I use the server's main chat channel, and not only is there nothing going on later in the night, but the few people on the channel bemoan the fact and have sadly accepted it.Whenever people say they can't find teams, I ask them if they're using the search function, making friends, and more importantly, if they're using their server's chat channels. 9 times out of 10, that fixes the problem.
Quote:Heck I was wondering if Praetoria was going to be more empty after I19, but nope, I see people all over in those common areas.
This is not doom and gloom. I'm not saying the game is dying. It would appear that CoH has a pretty stable, base line population that keeps the staff supported and NCSoft happy with the income.
But distributed over 11 servers, with no server clustering for TFs or anything, it can be really rough on some of the low population servers. That's all I'm saying here. -
Quote:Are you on Triumph Watch? If you, you know what I mean about TFs and such coming to a screeching halt late night, morning, and even early afternoon. We get a few hours prime time and that's all.I play on Triumph too. I don't stand around waiting to see someone to decide if people are there with all the zones and instanced missions because I don't expect people to come to where I am to let me know they are there.
Or do you think you just form teams and wander around Atlas Park so people can see you?
Don't get me wrong, I love Triumph. I don't really want to leave it at all. I'd much prefer they figure out a way for people to join TFs globally. But in lieu of that, some free server transfers would really help the problem. Heck, even if it was something like only allowing level 50 transfers ON to Triumph. -
Quote:Exactly my point.I think about 18 months ago a lot of people were close to quitting due to the sense that the game was dieing. The free server transfer was a pretty creative solution to that issue, IMHO because it allowed people to take their favorite toons to a server with a large population. I don't know how much money they make from selling transfers, but I doubt it's worth as much as extending the longevity of this game. IMHO, they should have free transfers all the time. If there's a game breaking way to abuse this function, they can limit it to 1 move per week or something.
Keeping people subscribing because they are able to find players at all hours of the day/night to run TFs seems like it is worth a lot more money than whatever they make off paid server transfers. -
Forbin, that was some impressive net stalking there. Kinda makes you wonder if you're dealing with this issue rationally or emotionally.
Quote:The reason you can't find anyone is
1. You are still on everyones ignore lists even tho you've been gone for 2 years.
2. People spend most of their time in missions or one of the dozen AE buildings where you can't see them.
3. Super Sidekicking made it so much easier to get teams together that players only spend the bare minimum hanging out in zones.
4. There are three factions now and players are split between them.
5. Judging from some of the complaints you've made in the past
You play the game when the population is at its lowest and so you are in no position to judge how many players are any server.
1) Uh. No. Nice try though.
2) That's nice. But on Triumph at least we have a global channel that has been in use for 4+ years for organizing server activities. Everyone knows about it. Everyone also knows that by about midnight, there aren't enough people on the server to get much of anything going, and they are sad about it. That's not good population.
3) That doesn't explain there being NOBODY for hours anywhere.
4) Uh huh.
5) See above.
Look, it doesn't do anyone - especially not NCSoft/Paragon - any good to try and cloud the issue. Most servers are dead with the exception of a few hours in prime time. If you miss those, forget about doing a TF. That's not a good thing for business.
If you want to make up bogus excuses, that's fine, but that doesn't help CoX keep customers happy, and thereby retain them.
I don't like server merges any more than the next guy, so I'm not saying that has to happen. I'd love to hear more about that globalization stuff they talked about years ago.
Heck, what if zones like Fort Trident could be global staging areas for TFs so at least you could get groups for that? Just a suggestion.
But without something like that, you'd got 2/3rds or 3/4s of the servers that are very low population. Other than Freedom and Virtue, its pretty rough. That's not good for CoX. Free transfers either to those servers or away from them is a way to let players remedy the problem themselves. -
Yeah that's the problem I am seeing: upgrade to boss as soon as there are 2 people. This is a bummer, because you used to be able to do +2/x6 back in the day, although you had to do it using "fillers" which was super annoying.
-
Quote:No, I'm not a doom and gloomer. I just resubscribed a week ago after 3 years away from the game. I'm not a hater. I'm giving CoX another shot after a long break.... Yes, because all that extra activity means the servers are dying...
Or are you one of the "The Devs shrunk the server hardware" types?
I play on Triumph, and holy moly is it dead. I can go hours without seeing a single person. It is so much less than what I remember from a few years ago that it is shocking.
The point is, the game clearly doesn't have the population it once had. NCSoft kinda admitted that a few years ago when they stopped disclosing CoX's subscriber numbers in their quarterly statements. But so what - if the game is fun, that doesn't matter.
The part that DOES matter though, is when they keep the same number of servers, but don't give people a free way to do some transferring. Because there are a few servers that are super dead, and only 2 or 3 that are high activity most of the day/night.
My point is that a subscription is ultimately a lot better to have than a couple server transfers. Losing customers who get bored on low pop. servers can lose you a lot more money.
One final note: the red/yellow/green dots are all relative. They aren't raw numbers, so you really can't conclude anything from that. -
Quote:What kind of dark armor toon are you using it on? And do you use it instead of OG?I consider my Cloak of Fear effective with two slots - L53 Endoplasm and L50 Nightmare acc/end. It could certainly be better, but I didn't feel that making it better was worth the additional slots. Yes, I'm running the cardiac boost.
What is your overall experience with it?
How helpful is the fear? How helpful is the -tohit? -
Quote:They lose a heck of a lot more money when people just unsubscribe because their server is dead. You are correct. That's exactly how they would lose money.
The fact that they haven't merged servers, or simply made server transfers something like 5 free per month, amazes me.
CoX has a severe population problem and too many servers. They don't want to merge because it looks bad and they know people will crap if they lose their character name.
The only logical and fair workaround is free server transfers on a somewhat regular basis. -
Gah. They still kept this in place?
Why the heck can't you just dump an arc you are not interested in? Having to clear up old arcs was miserable back when it was just a level issue. Now with changing sides, having to make an alignment change to clear up an arc sounds positively soul crushing.
Is there still no way to just dump/abandon/close an arc completely? -
If you are able to recast hasten before it expires, do you never experience hasten crash?

In the old notoriety system, a 6 man team, +2 difficulty, would not have bosses in the random mob spawns.
With the new system, I set myself to 6 people, +2 difficulty, but I still get occasional bosses. This is especially true if I actually group with anyone - even if it is only a single person.
For some of my characters, this is no big deal. But for other squishier characters, this is a very big deal.
Is this just the nature of the beast now? Is there no way to have large spawn sizes without bosses?
Thanks! -
Quote:I assume that's with a lot of set bonuses and such. I'd love to see that if you can PM me the MIDS info on the build. My spines/da is sitting at about 42% s/l defense if i remember correctly
Do you use Cloak of Fear? Does the fear actually do much? Is the -tohit noticeable?
What about defense to other damage types? I find that once you have 50% s/l resist and 20% s/l defense, you already have nothing to fear from s/l. Then its just all the other dmg types you have to worry about. -
I am not trying to get in too much of a CoF vs. OG debate, since that has been hashed out many times here. Though I understand that in any discussion of CoF, the comparison in usefulness to OG is always going to be out there just because that's basically how the dark armor set breaks down.
I've used OG for many years now, and for the most part I like it, but it really bugs me that I have to pay health to run it (that just seems unfair/negatively balanced) and the stagger effect of disoriented mobs is just annoying - not a huge problem, but annoying.
So in my rebuild of my spines/da scrapper, I'm trying to work in a lot more defense. If I can get maneuvers AND weave, that would be ideal, but I at least want one of them. This will get my defense in the 15-20% range, which puts it high enough that an additional -tohit debuff would make a difference I think.
Is it confirmed that damage doesn't truly break fear, it just lets them get 1 attack per 5 seconds? If so, then it means CoF is always providing a significant benefit from the fear, even if your damage auras are "breaking" it?
What if you have two damage auras - e.g. death shroud AND quills. Do they get 2 attacks per 5 seconds?
I understand that CoF is a slot hog, and that's a pain. Given that, I still might end up sticking with OG. But I'd like to get an idea of how much mitigation I am actually going to get out of CoF. If it is significant, I'd seriously like to consider it. -
My spines/dark has always been a project character for me. I love it but I can never get it to work just right. IOs saved it from the trash heap, since it gave me a way to have some endurance, but I still can't get it quite right.
I've recently decided to work on a build with a good bit of defense, and as a result I'm more and more interested in the -tohit feature of Cloak of Fear.
Right now I use Oppressive Gloom as a major mitigation tool, and it works pretty well. It is a tad annoying the way mobs will wander, and the health loss can be a pain, but it seems to work well.
But if the -tohit from Cloak of Fear, combined with occasionally making mobs cower, could do almost as well, it might be really awesome to switch to that.
I seem to recall there was a time that damage not only ruined the fear, but also the -tohit. Either that or a lot of mobs resist the -tohit effect somehow.
So my main questions are:
1) What are the exact mechanics for how damage breaks fear? I've read some people say it will only break it once every 7 seconds, so minions will still be feared quite a bit.
2) What are the mechanics behind the -tohit from Cloak of Fear?
Thanks! -
Base fixed. Thank you, mystery dev!
And thank you everyone who posted! -
Quote:Awesome. I sent a petition. How long does it normally take to get this fixed?im in ur base stealin ur.. Never mind.
Well-known bug. Bases that are inactive for a long period of time can get borked and they don't have any power or control. It seems just like rent is past due, but there may not even be rent due. You need to file a support petition in-game. Explain the problem and it will get fixed PDQ.
Quote:BTW, plot size no longer has any bearing on rent. It is now based on storage and buffing items.
Is there a wiki page or guide that will explain which items add to rent? I'd like to keep it rent free if possible.
Thanks! -
I just reactivated after about a 2 year break. I have most of my characters in a "vanity" SG that is just myself and my wife. We used the smallest plot that has no upkeep cost (I double checked that I didn't owe upkeep by going to the guy in Atlas Park. When I tried to pay upkeep, he said I didn't owe any).
Inside my base, the indicator bars read:
Energy Consumed: 605
Energy Produced: 0
Control Consumed: 170
Control Produced: 0
But I have a 1000 energy generator (in an energy terminal room), a 50 control mainframe, and three 50 control databases (all in the control room). So I should have 1000 energy and 200 control.
What am I missing?
Has something major changed in the last 2 years for bases? -

Yeah, they should never take the time to whip up something extra for you again.

Something extra for us? Huh? This ain't charity. They did this to make money. Don't act like they did us a favor.

Give me a break people, what we pay them is BARELY proportional to the work they put in .
[/ QUOTE ]
You are right. These costume options and emotes took a few hours to make. If only 10% of the population buys it, that's $150,000.
I'd be shocked if it took even 10 total man hours to finish the whole job. That's $15,000 per hour.
Heck, if it took 100 man hours (no way), it is still $1,500 per hour.
So you are right. There is no proportional connection between the cost, what you get, and the time it took to create. -

Add-on sales are still existing and viable sales models. The only real question is price per content. That's debatable for sure, but the concept of buying extra add-ons beyond the subscription fee is not foreign to other games, wether it's a digital key or a physical box.
[/ QUOTE ]
Burning Crusade costs $30, or three times as much as this VD pack. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it has more than three times as much content. Comparing to WoW is a loser's gambit. They add new content constantly, and the variety is enormous. I put my time in on WoW, and I'm not wanting them to make CoX like WoW, but when the issue is content that comes with your subscription fee, CoX looks even worse when compared to WoW (or pretty much every game out there).
And I'll say it again: CoX has about 3 years worth of catch up to do. Since release, CoX has received AT BEST about one year's worth of real content additions. The game needs an enormous amount of gameplay variety added to it.
Before they can start calling anything extra, they have TONS of catching up to do. -

Aren't you above personal assaults, lest a slapping contest ensue?

For $9.99, I'll /em slap anyone you wish. That's about equal to the value of this VD pack, no? -

That's one perspective. IMHO, I don't mind paying for extra perks like the DVD items or the GvE stuff, but I'll admit (and have already posted as much) that compared to GvE, this was a little steep for price vs. content. Count me in with the crowd that thinks that $4.99 would have been a better deal for this "mini-pack".
[/ QUOTE ]
I should state up front that I have absolutely no beef with the concept of microtransactions or pay-for-perks. We actually use that system heavily in my company.
My problem is that CoX is renowned in the gaming market as being extremely lacking in gameplay variety. All we have is "run missions", and the map design is exceedingly repetitive. Where other games have hundreds if not thousands of unique maps and environments, CoX uses a handful of tilesets each with only 5-10 different configurations. That's a problem.
So until they get their lack of gameplay variety situation fixed, they really aren't in a position to start selling "extra" stuff. There isn't enough BASE content for anything to really be considered extra, in my view.

Systems? Inventions are a step in the right direction. I'm hoping (and almost betting) that the base system will get some attention real soon. But I've got to wait until Issue 12 to see where things are headed in that vein and other possibilities.
[/ QUOTE ]
I agree completely with both points. Inventions are awesome. The invention system actually brought me back to the game after a 6 month break. That is the type of new content they need to be adding every few months. I don't mean something as game altering as IOs, but something that involves at least that much development time and effort.
Bases have an awesome foundation. They need to run with that, expand it, make them DO something, and open them up to everyone via lairs.
Then they need to find entirely new ways to play the game. I already listed some in this thread, and listing more is outside the subject matter here.
The point is:
Until CoX has a more acceptable amount of varied content, it is really inappropriate to be selling anything as "extra." You guys have a lot of catching up to do before then. -

Oh NO! A game that gives us free expansion packs (which is not at all typical of the competition)
[/ QUOTE ]
1) There are no free expansion packs. We pay $15 a month for continued content development.
2) Every other successful MMO in current existence does this (releases new content periodically, for no cost beyond the monthly fee).
Conclusion: You failed.
