As for being "epic" with "minimal cost"- if its widely available it isn't epic at all, it's status quo.

    *shrug*

Not seeing any validity in your complaint.
You have a point. I would say not ANYONE can be arguably super given those specific conditions, but most can. True. So, I'll give you that.

'Proper', as defined by the same people in this very forum, constantly telling people that they need to learn how to use the market to their advantage. I could pull up specific examples, if you like, but I'm sure you'll find it. Someone even mentioned it in this very thread.

Usually that 'proper' boils down to being efficient, patient, and knowledgeable. And I'm not saying that's bad or that those people are not speaking sound logic. I'm just simply answering your question.

I'd argue that "effort" is quite subjective in this case.

A newbie purpling out their warshade in a month is equivalent to a new high school graduate thinking that he should be able to jump right into a CEO spot in a major corporation so that he can have a Lamborghini in a month. That's not the way that things work.
That, I think, is exactly where we disagree. To me, a game shouldn't be a direct representation of the real world. We come here to relax, have fun, and have a good time. To me, a game should enable me (and everyone else) to have loads of fun. High rewards, low cost, low risk. Being a Game Design student, that's how I look at games. And what I say is, why SHOULDN'T that new player feel powerful with minimal effort? Why SHOULDN'T you be epic with minimal cost? It's all in a virtual world and a video game.

However, as I've said many times, I'm a realist. And my vision of this game can never be true because not everyone shares that vision, and for that reason, the market rewards the players in an unbalanced fashion. And it will continue to do so until everyone begins using it properly and the developers introduce various smart, and creative solutions to fix it. I think the introduction of Hero/Villain Merits was a step in the right direction. Now even that new player can access the rewards. It's just a matter of time and patience. Sadly, for some (me included), that cost is still unrealistically high (a month of doing Tip missions and buying Hero/Villain Merits for a SINGLE purple IO?! Yes, I do realize it's more efficient to buy some big recipes, sell them, and use that cash to buy the purple. But still. I'm putting myself in place of a new player.).

I know have this correct. I used to do my own share of marketeering. Even now, I try my best to try and be as efficient as possible in my inf. income (even though I usually have little patience in waiting for bids to hit).

The issue is that I realize and understand that there are people who either do not have the knowledge, or they simply don't want to spend the time and effort to do what the more experienced market users do.

And telling me marketeering, flipping, and farming/selling is healthy for the market because it destroys some inf. in the process is just a poor justification. It makes the game miserable for people I mentioned above by taking money away from the poor and giving 90% of it to the rich, and 10% of it to the trash. This causes a vicious cycle that keeps increasing the overall prices of items in market across the board. A mere 10% net loss in infamy (and the common effort of the whole Crazy 88s thing (They have my thanks! )) isn't nearly enough to slow down this cycle.

And sure, one would say "If you're not willing to put in the time and effort to earn money and spend it wisely, then you shouldn't expect to get all the cool shinies instantly!". Yes. That's very, very true. However, there was a time one could afford a single Apocalypse IO for 50,000,000 inf. to 60,000,000 inf., an Alchemical Silver for 10,000 inf. to 50,000 inf., and most Uncommon and Rare Recipes for under 1,000,000 inf. Now, those number have grown exponentially. That same Apocalypse IO is 500,000,000 inf., the Alchemical Silver is 100,000 and even 500,000 inf., and most recipes easily hit 5,000,000 inf. Though the market of most of the Uncommon and Rare recipes has been stable.

During this inflation, the only methods introduced to help the poor get more inf. without having to invest in the market were the introduction of Reward Merits, AE Tickets and Hero/Villain Merits. Sadly, the rich ones began taking advantage of those too, which only made the process worse!

Lastly, I need to make it clear that I'm not flaming, complaining, or trying to bash the marketeers. I'm just stating my personal observations, and why I think "fixing" the market is not something that can be done easily, or blamed on a small number of individuals. "Fixing" the market requires the effort of everyone who uses it, those who developed it, and the balance of the game in general. And that is, given the circumstances, something too massive to tackle with ease, unless someone somewhere comes up with a creative, cheap, and realistic solution.

Until then, the prices will continue to rise. Experienced and/or determined players will keep getting larger sums of cash. And finally, the new and/or not-so-determined players will continue to complain about not being able to afford anything on the market.

I may sell X for 3 million, but I only get 2.7 million. 300 000 inf is lost to fees.

Market activity is to be encouraged. Selling to Vendors however, increases the net inf in game.
So, farming AE Tickets, getting a stack of 50 Alchemical Silver Salvage pieces, and selling them for 200,000 inf. each is actually good for the market and the users because it's destroying some inf. in the process? Well yes, good sir! It's destroying the inf. of those who're buying all those Alchemical Silvers! ^_^

And later on, getting a whole bunch of inf., and using that to flip another common salvage item like Scientific Theory by buying large stacks of it, and then re-listing them at 1,000,000+ inf. each (this happened last week), is good for the market because it is destroying some inf. in the process? Again, of course! How do I not see how much of a positive impact these things have on the global economy of the game as a whole! I must be blind, or stupid! ^_^

Now excuse me while I go farm some tickets and sell some common salvage for 500,000 inf. a pop! I want to contribute and make the world a better place!!!

Honest question here... what's your normal playstyle like? I'm curious about how it differs from mine. Why? Because the fact that you can sell crafted uncommon recipes for what feels like a ridiculous amount of cash is making me rich from playing the game. I'm using the prices I can sell uncommons at to help afford rares and purples.

I think this is a good thing.
For you, yes. But since everyone else is doing it as well, it increases the total cash everyone has. That makes it easier for people to then spend that large sum of cash to spend it on more stuff, and hence increase the general price all across the market. It's a vicious cycle.

I don't know how one could "fix" this. But just because you and I are profiting from this, doesn't mean it's a good thing for the market system as a whole.

I've personally played a */Dark Armor Scrapper, and a Dark Melee/* Scrapper. I didn't like the former much, but I loved Dark Melee. It's really fun, especially when you get all the IOs and bonuses! Hopefully you won't have endurance issues! :)

Sure, lots of people made stupid amounts of inf with various exploits, BUT they are more than happy to give it to YOU for minimal effort.

These people are sitting around with a surplus of influence and a deficit of knowledge. Take advantage of them.

    You too can be hyperinflated!
I wish that was the only issue. I rarely complain about the market, and I rarely even post in these forums. The thing is that the inflation in the market is just getting worse and worse.

There was a time when having 2 million Inf. made you rich! There was a time people got happy when they received "125 infamy" from one of those Christmas presents.

Now if you have 2 million Inf., you would use all of that to buy 5-10 Alchemical Silvers. You could fully SO-out your level 50 character with that much money.

And yes. I realize there are smarter ways of going about it. I try to do them too. But my concern is the worth of Inf. and how it's declining each day. Making farming and grinding and being "efficient" or "patient" a standard, rather than a way of being smart with your money.

But oh well! *sells a Purple IO for 500,000,000 and rolls in cash!*
  8. Bright Shadow

    Dark*3

Well, you have a net endurance gain of 0.95 Endurance Gain. You also have that Chance for +END in Stamina. On average, in a perfect world, that Chance for +End is equivalent to 0.2 Endurance per second ((10 end x 20%) / 10 sec = 0.2). So your average Endurance Gain is actually roughly equal to 1.15 Endurance per second. The downside is that this bonus Endurance comes in chunks of 10 Endurance per 10 seconds, with only 20% Chance of hitting.

The alternative would be to replace that proc with a simple Endurance Modification IO, and you'd have a net endurance gain of around 1.10 Endurance per second. The difference is that this is stable and reliable, where the previous methods depends on the random number generator.

It's just a matter of taste which one you'd like more.

As for Dark Consumption, if you take that Steadfast Protection: Knockback Protection out of Obsidian Shield, you'll have one free slot to use on Dark Consumption. If you fill that slot with a common Recharge IO, you can reduce its recharge time by around 7 seconds to about 72 seconds (your build had a level 21 Accuracy/Recharge IO in there. Replacing it with a level 50 one, gives 79 seconds recharge time). The difference is that now you might get knocked back every now and then. But it's rare, since most knockback attacks in PvE do less that 4 points of KB. So you just have to weight that against having Dark Consumption come up 10 seconds faster.

One thing I noticed is that you're taking Obsidian Shield at 49. While that's fine, this build is, in no way, exemplar friendly. Obsidian Shield is your Mez Protection, and you need it as early as you possibly can. If you're not gonna be exemplaring down once you hit 50, it's fine. Otherwise I'd swap it with Cloak of Darkness. Or Weave.

Im not very convinced of this last change, where do you would put it? Death Shroud 5 slotted with sciroccos?
I usually put the Performance Shifter: Chance for +END in Stamina. However, I only do it if I don't have a character with a reliable +END power like Dark Consumption. I'd suggest you replace it with an Accuracy/Recharge enhancement in Dark Consumption. I'd say just forget about Chance for +END in Dark Consumption. As it's slotted, with just one enemy around, you're gonna get most of your endurance bar filled every time it's up. The extra +10 Endurance isn't really that much of a boost. Increasing the Accuracy and Recharge would be more beneficial.

The problem with Death Shroud is that it costs a lot of Endurance. If you slot it with Eradication, you WILL have Endurance issues with it. There are two things you could do, that I think, would be more efficient.

    1. Try to squeeze out one slot from one of your powers. Maybe that 5th slot in Shadow Punch. Or the +ACC Unique in Cloak of Darkness. Put that slot in Death Shroud, and 5-slot it with Scirocco's Dervish (all 5 of the set, minus the Damage proc. While fun, the damage proc in a PBAoE damage toggle is not all that spectacular). That puts you at 73% ACC (overkill, but it's worth the bonuses), 95% DAM (good!), 47% Endurance Reduction (awesome!), and 53% Recharge (you shouldn't care about Recharge on a PBAoE Damage Aura toggle).

    2. If you can squeeze out a 2nd slot from somewhere in your build (this would be rather hard, since you might lose some bonuses), you could make Death Shroud six-slotted. Slot it with a full set of Multi-Strike, and you'd get 73% ACC (same as above), 98% DAM (almost same as above), 91% Endurance Reduction (MUCH better than above!), and 47% Recharge (which we don't care about).

The first way would make Death Shroud cost more endurance, and gives you a flat 3.125% AoE Defense. The second, would reduce the endurance cost, but it'd only give you 1.875% AoE Defense, along with 1.875% Melee Defense, and around 1% Smashing/Lethal Defense.
  10. Bright Shadow

    Dark*3

I like the latter build more.

I slotted Soul Drain like a simple PBAoE attack with a full set of Obliteration on my Dark Melee Scrapper. With Hasten and the Recharge bonuses and the Radial Spiritual Boost in my Alpha Slot, I have Soul Drain up every 35 seconds or so. So it's just a tad away from being perma.

On its own, it also does a lot of damage under the right conditions. It's a really good power that's both a nice AoE damage and a boost to your ToHit and Damage. The thing to note is that Soul Drain is "front loaded". You can't see this in Mid's. But if you're in combat against just one enemy, you get a huge chunk of damage bonus with Soul Drain, and then you get a smaller bonus for every other enemy in the area. So it's like a perma-Build Up, except only better!

Another thing to note is Death Shroud. Personally, I put a lot of value in "active defense" or "offensive defense". I think a damage aura substantially increases your performance because enemies die faster, and you only need to survive for only as long as enemies are alive. So I'd take it early and 6-slot it when I can! But that's a personal preference, and it's just not some people's style.

I like the way you slotted Dark Regeneration now.

The last thing I'd change is the slotting in Stamina. I just think it's way too much. I'd free up those slots and put them in things like Death Shroud, Dark Consumption, or Soul Drain. You'd lose 3.125% to AoE Defense, and I don't think that's important, compared to the benefits you'd get by making Soul Drain come up faster, Death Shroud be more useful (higher damage, higher accuracy, lower endurance cost), and making Dark Consumption come up faster.

If you still really want that 3.125% AoE DEF, take 4 slots out of Stamina, put it in Death Shroud, and slot Death Shroud with Scirocco's Dervish. You'd have to take Death Shroud earlier though. It'd give you the same AoE DEF, make your PBAoE damage aura more useful, and fee up a slot.
  11. Bright Shadow

    Dark*3

Here's a quick build I made for you. I left out one power slot empty, along with 5 slots. You can use them however you want. You could take Shadow Maul and 6-slot it, or take whatever else that you might find handy and spread the slots around to other powers. You could also take Hasten, which would mean you can use Soul Drain, Dark Regeneration, and Dark Consumption faster!

At first glance, you may think you might have Endurance issues. But in practice, I doubt you would. Just make sure you use Dark Consumption liberally!

The first I noticed in your build is the way you'd slotted Siphon Life. You've 6-slotted it with HOs, and with zero Recharge enhancement! You're at 94% ACC, 94% DMG, 94% END, and 94% HEAL. To me, that's a lot of overkill, especially considering those HOs will be incredibly expensive, and the fact that there would be zero RECH!

    Here's how I've slotted mine:

    Level 8: Siphon Life -- Mako-Acc/Dmg(A), C'ngImp-Acc/Dmg/Rchg(9), C'ngImp-Acc/Dmg/EndRdx(9), C'ngImp-Dmg/EndRdx/Rchg(19), Nictus-Heal(39), Nictus-Heal/HP/Regen/Rchg(43)

With that, you get 68% ACC. 68% ACC is more than enough to put you at ToHit Chance cap up 95% against most common enemies. Even if you think that's not enough, chances are, you'll get some ACC bonuses from random sets littered across your build.

You'd also get 88% DMG, which is only a reduction of 5 damage points. It's almost negligible.

You'd get only an increase of just shy of 2 Endurance points with my slotting.

Also, with my slotting, you'd lose around 30 heal points per use of Siphon Life.

However, you'd gain an increase of around 3 seconds Recharge, which would compensate for that loss of 30 heal points.

The biggest difference is that mine would most definitely be a lot cheaper to slot without any significant change. But since I don't know your budget, I'm just making a suggestion!

The 6-slotted Stamina and 3 slotted Health are HUGE, HUGE overkills to me.

I'd free 4 slots from Stamina (reduce it to two slots), and one from Health. You have 2 heals (Siphon Life and Dark Regeneration) and one +END power (Dark Consumption).

Furthermore, I'd also lose the Kinetic Combats and replace them with Mako's Bite or Touch of Death for positional defense, since you don't have a lot of them to stack to get a much higher defense to Smashing/Lethal compared to Melee/Ranged Positional.

I would put more slots in Dark Consumption....and Soul Drain. Is Soul Drain just your set mule or something? It's one of your most important powers, and you've only given it 2 slots?!??!

Why do you have Touch of Fear 5-slotted and Soul Drain 2-slotted?!??!!

    ------------------------------

That's for slotting. For powers: I would definitely pick up Cloak of Fear. Maybe drop Touch of Fear and get Cloak of Fear instead.

Also, I'd personally forget about Shadow Maul. But that's just my opinion and playstyle. I realize people either dislike Shadow Maul, or love it. I'm in the former category.

  15. Depending on how much I enjoy playing a character, hitting 50 for me is usually less than a month or 2-3 weeks. (not counting my first couple of 50s!).

Currently, I seem to hit 50 way faster than I -want- to.

I enter Praetoria, and within the first day, I'm around level 15.

The second day, I'm around level 24.

    The third, around level 29.

    Fourth, around level 32.

    Fifth, around level 35.

After level 35, I simply join lots of ITFs and begin truly grinding with Tips and papers. It gets better with TFs once I hit 45, and then it's a small gap to fill to 50.

What's interesting to me is try not to farm at all. I like to do Story Arcs or TFs so that I can get the bonus XP from arcs (giant chunks of free XP!) and have a huge collection of merits by the time I hit 50. What's more interesting is that I don't like to team up unless it's for TFs and the such! I enjoy solo'ing more! It also seems faster to me.

Claws/Fire?! How would that be an AoE death machine? Last I remember Claws was very efficient in Single Target, but not so much in AoE (I'm not being snarky/sarcastic, I'm genuinely curious!).
  18. Energy Blast/Energy Assault/Energy Melee:

I just love those sets. I've played 2 Energy/Energy Blasters to 50 (deleted them to open room, and I still wouldn't say no to leveling up a third one). I've played a Mind/Energy Dominator to mid-30s, and I've played an Energy/Energy Brute to 50. All that knockback, the visual effects, the Nova, the pom poms of doom. It just makes me smile!

    Anything Psi-related:

I just love the concept. I've had two Mind Dominators (not 50, sadly), a Psychic/Energy Blaster, a DP/Mind Blaster, a Fortunata, and I still wouldn't say no to rolling more psychic-themed characters. Oh I would pay to see Corruptors get Psychic Blast...or better yet...a debuff set centered around Psionics: Psychic Domination.

You know. I want to argue with you. I want to tell you how shallow and judgmental your view on peoples' appearances and its relation to their morality is. I want to prove to you how hypocritical your sound and how everything you say on these topics come off as double standards...

But I know that you will simply not budge. You're padding your post count, and disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing (as someone mentioned).

So I'm just gonna smile and nod! Yup! You're right! Statesman and Reichsman are the same, but the way they dress shows that one is a Hero and the other is a Villain, even though their bodies are the same - they've both chosen the way they dress, but they have no choice about their body. I fully agree with you and say that you speak sound and valid logic. You're also consistent in your opinions and are a paragon of non-discriminative behavior, along with great reading comprehension and great self-confidence in your image and what you represent. Yup! I wish I could be more like you!

    Just smile and nod, guys!

Perhaps 'hostile' was an unsuitable choice of word. What I meant was that the original post was rather aggressive and assertive. I came into the thread expecting a technical issue of some sort and a maybe a major flaw in the game, and the player having a question about how to solve it.

Instead the player introduced a number of things that bothered her personally as "issues" with the game that need to be solved, while sounding incredibly insecure about it all, and then proposing a list of solutions that would be "very easy to implement" and the tone suggests that she's simply blaming the lack of these options on ignorance and inconsideration of developers.

That's how the original post came off to me. It was a complaint, followed by a poorly thought-out solution, followed by the assertion that the particular solution would 'fix' an otherwise broken game.

It's the difference of saying "How dare they not allow us to do such and such?! I have an issue with this flaw!" rather than "I would like to have such and such features in the game!"

And yes. After she cleared up some questions, I did cut her some slack. But then she keeps changing the context and purpose of her original post, threatens someone to die in a fire, and then tells people that she knows how to implement these features and they're easy as pie to implement cause she's written 3 games.

At this point, I don't even know what to say anymore!
  21. Bright Shadow

    AoE Monster!

    I recently hit 50 with a Dark Melee/Fiery Aura/Soul Mastery Scrapper.

    Key powers:

    Blazing Aura ->
    Shadow Meld ->
    Soul Drain ->
    Fiery Embrace ->
    Burn

The combination of those 5 powers is all the AoE you will ever need. Since you also have Dark Melee, solo'ing the 'big ones' is also no issue. You just have so much damage buff that things die too fast to be any harm. I can clear most of a Rikti spawn set for +1/x8 in the mere 15 seconds that Shadow Meld is up. Then i just finish off the Bosses and runners.

When that 15 seconds finishes, you have your heals (two of them!) and your resistance and defense to keep you alive.

It's a beast! I'm having a blast with the character. And she's the perfect balance for me between Single Target Damage, AoE Damage, and Survivability.

Even seeing the code doesn't help sometimes.

'Cause I do. I really do. What about this, I pull the links for the three games I've made, and THEN you can reconsider. And I use clicking as slang for clipping. It sounds the same in my mind. Alright? Yeesh.

And, my remarkable issue was that I was remarking about the remarkable size of the cleavage in this remarkable game, and said size was an issue for me because I wanted more manly girls. Thus, a remarkable issue.

    Any questions?

Do you know how redering works? I'm just asking, do you? YOu realize pulling the files for a muscular male then overlaying it on top of a female model, then merging the render and cutting the insides out is relatively easy, right?

And no, I don't work at Paragon. No, I don't know how the game works. But yes, I am a programmer, yes, I know how easy or hard something would be to render, and yes, you need to read what I've said before commenting.
Making a few games doesn't make you a "programmer", "modelling artist", "game designer", or an employee of Paragon Studios. I'm a student in my fourth and final year in Software Engineering with specialization in Game Design, and eventhough I've probably had more experience than you, I do not claim to be any of those things until I've had professional experience in the field. City of Heroes is not an amateur game you would write with a small team of amateur programmers. It's a massive project with a complex engine and a massive team of designers, artists, modellers, and various other people working in other fields. What you're claiming ("pulling the files for a muscular male then overlaying it on top of a female model, then merging the render and cutting the insides out") is probably much, much, much more complicated than you and I probably could ever guess when it comes to projects at such scales.

Okay. So you're bringing up an issue and a complaint. You're putting fault in something, and people disagree with you. Why do you claim "I'm just asking a question"? Why is your thread in the Questions forum?

If it's just a question, why is your original post so hostile?

Annnnnyway, thanks, Forbin, for that... uhm... present. Actually, Golden Girl, you can have them. I have a boyfriend already and I'm not interested in that sort of thing yet.

Also. Guys. Since when is this a thread about slutty looks? I just wanted more realistic proportions, never once did I say that boobs = bad. I just expressed distaste with how they were rendering, but did not insinuate that I don't like people with big boobies. If you guys want to have an argument about how to make yourself a ****, then, sure, but let's stay on topic, shall we?
People are talking amongst themselves about a different topic. No one's berating on your on the whole 'slutty' discussion. It's more about someone saying something, and someone else taking offense, and everyone telling her she's being silly, and her denying it.

You do not know how hard or easy it would be to implement this. You're not a programmer. You're not a designer. You're not a 3D Modelling artist. And last but not least, you do not work in Paragon Studios to have any clue on how the game engine functions.

You do not know how this game works, and how such features would be implemented, and whether or not they would affect other parts of the game, and whether or not the majority would embrace the additions. It's CLIPPING. Not "clicking". Clipping is when a part of a geometry collides and is inserted into another geometry (or itself) and hence part of it is "clipped" from the rendering pipeline, and would not be rendered.

Okay. Awesome suggestions! I would love new hairstyles! I'm hoping Issue 20 comes with more customization options, as David N. hinted at revamp of old costume pieces at some point!

And finally, all you're stating are various suggestions that you, personally, would like to see in the game. Why did you make this thread here and not in the Suggestions Forum? And if that's true, why is your thread titled "remarkable issues" and your original post labels the lack of these features flaws and issues with the game?! I do not get this!

Even you don't know what this "thread is about"! xD
