  1. Fare thee well. Hope to see you at HeroCon '10 anyway.

  3. Thanks for all the "Happies" folks!

Couple of clarifications: I'm actually at the "shotgun loaded with rock-salt" stage, and the cat can go ahead and have the cake. I've never had much of a sweet tooth.
  4. Actually, the most irritating thing I encounter with mobs running away is their almost unerring tendency to run into drones (outdoor mobs, obviously), thus "kill-stealing" themselves. I'm on the verge of bugging this once a week until they fix it, ban me, or shut down the game.
  5. Q. How many mods does it take to frighten a thread to death?
    A. Eight, apparently.

    Was gonna say:
None. That's what pets are for.

Look closely; her entire outfit (except for the Enforcer belt) is new. I suspect it's one of the new costume themes (Alpha and Omega) mentioned here. Also wondering if the Alpha and Omega auras mentioned might somehow be structured to give them that Tron-like glowie armor that so many people have been begging for, but that might just be wishful thinking.

So, anyone know what this is or if it's just a zone decor item I've somehow missed for four and a half years?
I'm assuming that, yes, you just missed for 4+ years, or at least for the 3 I've been in the game, having started red-side. I remember it pretty clearly from rushing my first villain to level 10 so I could start my first VG. Ah, the energy of "youth".

But yes, it was one of the oddities I noticed at the time. I was significantly MORE shocked when, during some zone event or another (zombie apocalypse possibly), the disk was NOT in it's accustomed position - just blank asphalt. It faded back in when the event ended.

I wouldn't really call this an "easter egg" per se, since such are often difficult to locate, and this is out in the open. The (Easter?) Egg Hunter badge and Developer's Dungeon under Grandville are good examples.

    Is it a butt slot?..

Heh, pre-I16, my default operation on any of my (7 on Justice, alone) MMs was to crank the difficulty up a notch every 10th level, i.e. +1 at 10, +2 at 20, etc.

Now I have more flexibility to do things like solo BNY missions at x8 and start at -1, upping the diff on each pass, til I get killed.

Every player is going to vary in their play style, but MMs are (more so than many ATs) not for everyone. They need a very different mindset, have their own finesse, PARTICULARLY on teams. But, as stated before, if you're relying on an MM to heal your butt, you should have PUG'd with a Corr. MMs that have an ounce of sense are debuffing your opponents, buffing you (if that's an option), tying up annoying ambushes (i.e. "distractions"), harassing the LTs around the EB/AV *you're* fighting (i.e. "other distractions"), throwing their disposable minions in harm's way, and healing THEM so they keep the heat off of YOU.

    Probably.

On the other hand, something else that occurred to me about character names: I'd like to be able to use my OWN names more than once on a given server, i.e have more than one character by the same name on a particular server.

I've occasionally wanted to make identical characters with different powersets, to represent them having the versatility to change roles. Would also be nice (GR not withstanding) to have a character that can hop freely between red and blueside.

You may want to ultimately respec the Soulbound Allegiance over to you Grave Knights. Unlike every other MM type, your 3rd tier pet is NOT your main damage dealer. Those are, indeed, the Grave Knights, who would benefit most from the superior buffs SA grants, as well as the buff proc, if you ever acquire it.

  13. Comments re: my necro/dark build:

Necromancy: Life Drain is the only non-veteran ranged attack he has, simply as a supplemental self-heal. Soul Extraction I originally took because it's nice to fill a gap in your line with an instant replacement that's tougher and more mobile than the original. A new pet aura (from Expedient Reinforcement) was just icing on the cake.

Dark Miasma: That pool largely speaks for itself; lots of debuff in there, very solid group heal and group rez, and an 8th pet that (at the suggestion of a good friend) is now a -to hit bomb. Stacking its Chill of the Night AoE with Darkest Night and Shadow Fall (and later, Oppressive Gloom) is a nice way of saying "why buy defense when you can't hit me anyway?"

    Fitness: Obvious stuff.

    Flight: More obvious stuff.

Leadership: Assault, because damage is damage, and having nothing worthwhile to slot in it "saves" slots on something you use as a ladder to something else. Namely, Tactics, which gives me pets that keep on beating stuff up even if I'm blinded and, with that 6th Adjusted Targeting, gives me +7.5% status resist.

Soul Mastery: Crowd control is always a beautiful thing, but Oppressive Gloom was an exceptional addition to the set. It will rapidly stun any Lts and minions in the radius, and with the Absolute Amazement proc, contributes to the -to hit on any targets that are still capable of fighting. I generally walk into a mob, set myself to follow the toughest SOB there, turn Twilight Grasp on auto, and watch the show.

General notes: 6 slot your pets as early as possible. Everything else can wait. Get the pet upgrades as soon as possible, for the same reason. Collectively, they are your attack AND defense.

    The Television

Bah, if you want to impress ME, put the "M" back in MTV...

Oh, and gratz on the "ding".
  18. Y'know, they're not saying that model is a PC... i.e. still no reason to assume we're (finally) getting glowie armor bits... May just be an NPC model. Certainly HOPING otherwise...

Regarding the faction symbols, any chance we can get reworks of the standard Hero and Villain ones?

Heh, yeah, that's sorta what I was assuming, given definition #2 of the one I found. And yes, that's an awesome pair.

There's a gazillion people on the forums that'd throw suggestions at you. It's just a matter of planning ahead, coming here and saying "I have a character idea for X and Y powersets and Z backstory. Any name ideas?" Also, color me a bit baffled... but what's wrong with a non-English name? Great conversation starters there.

My point being, I suppose (possibly subconscious), if you're stuck for an idea, ask a friend or three. Trust me, my friends and I pick each other's brains and give ideas away all the time. The more stuff you find that you genuinely like (rather than merely being willing to accept), the more you can check for availability and end up enjoy playing.

    As an aside:
    portmanteau

    /portmanto/

    • noun (pl. portmanteaus or portmanteaux /portmantoz/) 1 a large travelling bag made of stiff leather and opening into two equal parts. 2 before another noun consisting of two or more aspects or qualities: a portmanteau movie.

Oxford was not terribly helpful in telling me what you meant by that. Possibly a colloquialism I didn't find.

And upon further examination, I get a giggle from noting that www.askoxford.com misspelled "traveling", at least in the definition of portmanteau.
  22. Some names I was pleasantly surprised at getting (all on Justice):
Blood Speaker (originally Bloodspeaker prior to server xfer)
    Half-Life (rad/rad corruptor with a post-apocalyptic zombie look)
Mindweb (for my Arachnos Widow, no less)
    Nightstruck
    Dr. Ragnarok
    Neuromonster
    Wyldkard
    Ghost Ink Man
    Ghost Program
    Phrankenshock
    Agony Song
    Freedom's Hammer
    Brass Cannon
    Sun Shard

A name I was surprised to get, but later deleted anyway (also Justice):
Tooth and Claw (still available as of 10 minutes ago )

Yeah, I'll give a nod to blind luck for a few, but there are plenty I'm quite pleased with that aren't obvious, yet still creative.

Edit: Got bored, checked about a dozen or so (yes, on Justice), found all these available, if anyone is so-inclined:
    Shell Access
    Anne R. Kissed
    Nightspeed
    Foreign Hand
    Simple Mind
    Trouble-Magnet
    Aggro-Magnet
    Jumpin' Jehosophat
    Cataphract (yes that's a real word )

    NEW Power Sets!

Actually, any time I see Street Fighting mentioned, the first thing I think of is a primarily punch-based melee set with combo effects, a'la Dual Blades.

Have been wanting to have dark/dark doms almost since day-1.

Do I really have to say that a Broadsword Brute is painfully obvious? Apparently, because Stalkers got it first. Stalkers?!? Conan the Assassin, anyone?
