I noticed that any noob can heal, on any noob team. Healers will actually increase the team's survival rate even if the team is completly borked with blasters aggroing first, controllers blasting instead of holding, tanks acting like scrappers, and scrappers running aroung in the mission collecting glowies. Even in this terrible, aweful, horrible, completely noobish situation, healers are helpful.
But wait... defubbers and buffers on the other hand, if playing in a borked team like above, will be almost useless. Their AOE debuffs typically require that the baddies be grouped up tightly so that they AOE radius will affect them all. That takes teamwork to accomplish.
There's the rub.
Otherwise, I also really, REALLY like debuffer defenders. I think there are some cases where a healer is more useful on a team, but then the same is true of debuffers. -
Nice comments, Konoko! Wow! Didn't even know the "/UNBIND" command existed. It doesn't show up in /cmdlist. Excellent addition to the bind guide! Your other good comments are appreciated as well. Thanks.
-
Just wanted to say that out of all the AT and powerset options available to me in COV, Dark Stalkers are my favorite. Thanks for giving us these.
-
Yeah, had trouble making this work too, and gave up back in the day. I DID create an autoreply bind using my Logitech G-15 Gaming Keyboard that works great! It made team builing way easier. However... now, as of I7 at least, we CAN create such a bind. Try:
/bind <key> "reply This is my message text, buddy!"
The "reply" command can not reply to global tells, only tells from players on the same server. So it is more limited than the "autoreply" command in this respect (autoreply recognizes global tells), but since you wouldn't typically be sending standard reply messges to people on different servers, it works out fine! -
Just wanted to say thanks for this guide. It really helped A LOT!

Lab Coat clips with nearly all pants (except perhaps skin tight) on male heroes. The lab coat needs to be expanded a bit so that the pants do not come through the back middle of the coat. Thanks.
-
How about an update including the new I7 emotes? -
YAY! The I7 Arch-villain nerf is here!
They still got a regeneration buff, about +300%, but nothing like the +1100% buff they had before this last patch. They are now defeatable -- uh, at least with a full team and a dark defender on it...
That said, I would still classify radiation/radiation defenders and controllers as THE arch-villain and giant monster killers, unequaled by any other archetype or power set. -
Ok. Another personal update. Previously my dark/dark defender helped defeat the AV Battle Maiden. I just fought Chimera and was unable to defeat her regardless of how much I spammed my -REGEN powers Twilight Grasp and Howling Twilight. We didn't even make a dent in the AV's hit points. Full team of 1 stone tank, 2 defenders (dark/dark and empathy), 1 controller, 2 scrappers, 1 PB, and 1 energy blaster. Not fun, and had to abandon the mission.
I wonder if a rad/rad defender could have killed Chimera?
Can't wait for the AV/GM fix to come through in a week or two. -

Binds execute left to right, but POWERS in binds execute right to left. This can cause some confusion as to the order to do some things.
I believe powers may be pushed into a LIFO stack as the bind executes.
[/ QUOTE ]
Excellent, excellent insight, Linea_alba! I've tested this and concur. Commands in the bind string are executed from left to right, but POWER COMMANDS in the string are activated from right to left. This is the reason that the "bind_load_file" command is placed at the end (far right) of the bind string... so that the other commands in the string (including powers) have a chance to execute before the new bind is loaded. This is something I should have noticed and mentioned, but didn't. Thanks to fellow gamers like you, great strides are made in our understanding of the game. Excellent and well done!
Bugger. All right, I've rewritten the entire ARRANGING YOUR BIND COMMANDS section to adjust for this realization. The most updated version of my ADVANCED BIND GUIDE can be found here .

Oops. Didn't mean to imply that no other combibation of archetypes could possibly defeat an AV. For example, if you had 4 heroes on a team that each had EM Pulse, then they could conveivably stagger their use of it every 30 seconds so that the -REGEN effect never wears off. This means that a team with 4 blasters with EM Pulse would be enough to defeat an I7 AV WITHOUT a rad/rad or dark/dark defender on the team. FYI
-
[ QUOTE ]
The Unfounded conclusion would be Sonic is less important than -regen. For sonic to be more important than -regen it would have to debuff -100% res and double your damage. It's a nice boost, but not double.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think you're right. I've been experimenting with my rad/rad defender to see how he does against GMs and AVs, and it looks like -RES alone doesn't cut it. Without the -REGEN from Lingering Radiation, the GMs took absolutely no damage. With the -REGEN, however, the team as able to inflict damage on the GM. We fought Paladin.
So this would seem to imply that -REGEN powers are NECESSARY to defeat the new I7 AVs and GMs, which would knock out Sonic Defenders, Controllers, and Blasters; and Storm Summoning Defenders and Controllers from the list of achetypes that can defeat the new AVs. Also the EM Pulse powers work, but wears off after about 30 seconds, and the recharge rate of the power is so long that the AV's regeneration rate is able to restore itself before the power recharges and we're back at square one. So blasters and Trick Arrow Defenders and Controllers that have this power won't ensure an AV defeat.
So this means that only 3 archetypes will ensure that a team defeats an AV or GM:
1) rad/rad defenders and controllers
2) dark miasma defenders
3) kinetics defenders and controllers
It's possible that the Kinetics Defender/Controller's -REGEN power Transfusion might be to weak to be useful, but I don't have any data for this. -
Here is an updated list for COH (someone else might compile a list for COV?)
The following is a list of all powers and hero archetypes in COH that you will need to defeat an arch-villian.
Powers that reduce the REGENERATION RATE of Foes:
Lingering Radiation Radiation Defenders and Controllers
EM Pulse Radiation Defenders and Controllers
Twilight Grasp Dark Miasma Defenders
Howling Twilight Dark Miasma Defenders
Transfusion Kinetics Defenders and Controllers
EMP Arrow Trick Arrow Defenders and Controllers
EM Pulse Blasters (Electrical Mastery epic power pool)
Powers that Reduce the DAMAGE RESISTANCE of Foes:
Enervating Field (toggle) Radiation Defenders and Controllers
Fallout Radiation Defenders and Controllers
Tar Patch Dark Miasma Defenders
Freezing Rain Storm Summoning Defenders and Controllers
Disruption Arrow Trick Arrow Defenders and Controllers
Acid Arrow Trick Arrow Defenders and Controllers
Disruption Field (toggle) Sonic Defenders and Controllers
Sonic Siphon Sonic Resonance Defenders and Controllers
Shriek Sonic Defenders and Blasters
Scream Sonic Defenders and Blasters
Howl Sonic Defenders and Blasters
Shout Sonic Defenders and Blasters
Screech Sonic Defenders and Blasters
Dreadful Wail Sonic Defenders and Blasters
Well, it's pretty clear that Radiation Defenders/Controllers are still the most effective AV killers. However, who comes second is somewhat uncertain to me. Dark Miasma Defenders now seem to be the next best pick because of their 2 new -REGEN powers and their 1 -RES power. However, the Sonics Defenders just might make up for not having any -REGEN powers with their many -RES powers. Having never played a Sonics Defender, I don't feel qualified to judge, but my guess is they'd be very effective. After these, of course, it's a toss up and depends upon your team's make up. Needless to say, ALL of these powers and archetypes would be useful against an AV, and just might turn the tide in your favor. -
I have a personal update. Decided to take on Battle Maiden last night... and wiped the floor with her using my new -regen powers!
The team consisted of 1 tank, 1 contoller, 1 PB, 1 dark defender (me), and 4 blasters. It was shakey at first, but I continued to spam Twilight Grasp and Howling Twilight whenever they recharged, while also blasting away... and it worked great! Twilight Grasp and Howling Twilight didn't reduce the Av's regen rate for long, so I had to keep activating those powers as fast as I could. I also made sure Smokey (my dark servant pet) was always up and by her side so he could also spam Twilight Grasp. Once our blaster hit her with EM Pulse, it was all but over. She got knocked down to 3/4 health, and never really recovered. From there it was a steady (but slow) decline in AV hit points. Nice.
This was a dramatic change from the previous night's battle with the AV Nightstar. I didn't know about dark defender's anti-regen powers then, and we had to bring in a rad/rad defender to defeat the AV. But now... well... I guess I'll have to put Dark Defenders up there at the top of the list of AV killers, right below Sonics. -
Great info, Luminara. Thanks. That PDS Index makes my brain hurt!
-
[ QUOTE ]
It's a noble and admirable goal, and I agree. But it needs to be thorough, and correct, so the players who use it to build AV teams are getting the right information and not kicking or ignoring some players because they aren't Rads.
[/ QUOTE ]
I agree. So let's fix it up.
I logged in, and checked out my dark/dark's powers. Right clicking on them, there is no mention of -regen or -res. Neither is it in the powers' info for Howling Twilight or Twilight Grasp.
Checked out the free download Issue 7 Prima guide ( http://coh.primagames.com/ look on page 89 for Twilight Grasp). No information on heroes' powers in it, only COV... and I'm not entirely certain that power modifications in COV apply to COH as well... do they? -
Oops. That's absolutely correct about Sonic controllers. They don't have sonic blast... so cross them out of those powers!
And I forgot to add Controllers to Sonic Siphon, they have it too.
I don't even see EMP Arrow listed anywhere (is it a brand new epic pool for archery or something?).
I did find one omission, though, EMP Pulse in the Electrical Mastery epic power pool for Blasters. This power reduces regeneration rates as well. So thanks for making me go back and check it.
My stats and info, btw, are coming from the COH manual, and double checked with the COH Planner.
Well, if they fix the AVs, then great. I'd be happy to delete this whole thread. In the meantime, though, I thought it might be helpful for those of us who are trying, STRUGGLING to complete their AV missions over the next weeks or months while the Devs are mulling over what they should do. -
[ QUOTE ]
I was under the impression that Twilight Grasp, and Howling Twilight from Dark Defenders also provided brief click based -regen.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nope. Twilight Grasp has -Dam and -Acc. That means, it reduces the damage that the foe is able to inflict upon heroes... rather than their resistance to damage inflicted upon them (RES).
Howling Twilight has -recharge, disorient, and slow... but not -RES or -REGEN.
IT would indeed be nice if these powers did have -Res and -Regen, wouldn't it? -
Welcome again fans and foes! Today's lesson is on how to work around the newly upgraded (i.e., broken) Arch-villains. With the advent of I7, AV's regeneration rates and damage resistance were significantly enhanced. So much so that it is now IMPOSSIBLE to complete any mission that includes an AV without a specialized archetype of hero on the team who also happens to have the right powers. This applies to nearly all missions of levels 40+ (and a few below).
What's the trick? Well, obviously the team must reduce the AV's newly boosted regeneration rates and damage resistance. Only a few hero archetypes can do this, however, so you'll have to be very choosey when you build your team and/or super group once you've reached level 40.
The following is a list of all powers and hero archetypes in COH that you will need to defeat an arch-villian.
Powers that reduce the REGENERATION RATE of Foes:
Lingering Radiation Radiation Defenders and Controllers
EM Pulse Radiation Defenders and Controllers
Transfusion Kinetics Defenders and Controllers
Powers that Reduce the DAMAGE RESISTANCE of Foes:
Enervating Field (toggle) Radiation Defenders and Controllers
Fallout Radiation Defenders and Controllers
Tar Patch Dark Miasma Defenders
Freezing Rain Storm Summoning Defenders and Controllers
Disruption Arrow Trick Arrow Defenders and Controllers
Acid Arrow Trick Arrow Defenders and Controllers
Disruption Field (toggle) Sonic Defenders and Controllers
Sonic Siphon Sonic Resonance Defenders
Shriek Sonic Defenders, Controllers and Blasters
Scream Sonic Defenders, Controllers and Blasters
Howl Sonic Defenders, Controllers and Blasters
Shout Sonic Defenders, Controllers and Blasters
Screech Sonic Defenders, Controllers and Blasters
Dreadful Wail Sonic Defenders, Controllers and Blasters
Looking over this list, you'll notice that Radiation Defenders and Controllers are by far the best at reducing a foe's damage resistance and regeneration rates. A TOGGLE power, such as Enervating Field, that reduces an AV's damage resistance is by far the best choice. Click powers merely reduce a foe's resistance and regeneration rates for a few seconds... which typically allows the AV to recuperate once the effects have worn off and you're back to square one. In addition, Radiation Defenders/Controllers have a lot more going for them because they can also reduce a foe's regeneration rate. If you look at the list, there are only 3 powers in the game that do this, and Radiation Defenders/Controllers have 2 of them.
The second pick, for me, would then be Sonic Defenders and Controllers for their Disruption Field, which is also a toggle power that reduces damage resistance. All other powers in the list above are click powers. Sonic defenders/controllers/blasters also have a TON of attacks whose secondary effect reduces a foe's damage resistance, so they are defeinitely at the top of the list.
After these, it's somewhat of a toss up as to which archetype to choose. There's no doubt that a dark defender, storm defender, kinetics defender or trick arrow defender will help a little... but I'm not sure their powers are strong enough to allow a team to defeat an arch-villain.
Lastly, there ARE Radiation defenders/controllers out there who chose NOT to take Enervating Field. Make sure they have that power before you invite them on the team. The same goes for Sonic defenders/controllers and the power Disruption Field. In fact, the same goes for all of the apropriate archetypes. I, for example, have a dark/dark defender WITHOUT Tar Patch... so my hero would be useless (and he was indeed useless when we fought our first I7 AV, I might add).
Well, that's it Fans and Foes! I only have one thing left to say and that is... If elected Mayor of Paragon City, I will promise a chicken in every pot and a Radiation Defender in every team! Thank you. Thank you. (waves to thundering applause) -

Just a suggestion, but if someone is doing something boneheaded in your group, let them know.
I just started playing this game a couple months ago, and I'm on a learning curve. I'd rather someone go ahead and correct me then continue looking like an idiot.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hey Dude, I'm sure that's the case for most people BUT, and it's a BIG BUT, it just gets frusterating to explain it over and over every night for 2 years.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well... I'm not that impatient. I don't mind explaining. Even over and over (this is what binds are for). It's when you explain it over and over and no one listens... that's when it's frustrating! In addition, I think being willing to accept suggestions and criticism from another player is not the norm. Instead, most take it as an attack, and either attack back or get all resentful and defiant. And when players do this it's not merely frustrating, but downright distasteful. When this happens, of course, I team wipe 'em.
All is NOT lost, however! I just played with a PUG last night that more than appreciated my tank's abilities. One guy said that he had been playing COH for over 2 years and had never played with someone who tanked as good as me. Well, kinda made me blush, but it was sorely refreshing (and appreciated)!
So there is hope... -
Yeah, what is the deal with that anyway? You tell 'em you're herding. They say ok. Ask them to move back. They don't. You run in, herd the room, and just as you turn around to run back to the herd spot, you notice the entire team in the room attacking the back of the horde, prolonging the battle, and getting teammates killed. Now is that odd, or what? Or worse, the pull that is meant to save lives and to bring the baddies to the team one by one is instead taken as a battle call and they all rush in and die??!!
Or even worse... you ask the team to stand back and not to aggro anything near the portal because it will spawn a ton of baddies that will kill the whole team. So what happens, some blaster suddenly fires at a baddie right next to the portal, spawing the huge horde of baddies, and wiping the team.
Did I missing something?
Lately, I've been taking a very vindictive view of this wacky, counter-productive and selfish behavior. If a blaster wants to aggro a whole room against the wishes/interests of the team, I simply abandon the blaster and any members of the team who are following him to their fate. Let them die. Serves them right. I'll say, "Anyone who doesn't want to die, fall back, retreat, and regroup." And then I run out of the room.
I've tried using a bind to inform the team. Here it is:
"Herding is DANGEROUS! We need to keep the horde focused on the tank or they will turn on the rest of the team. This means YOU need to STAY OUT OF THE HORDE'S SIGHT until they are in a nice, tight group.
If the horde sees you, they will scatter, attack the rest of the team, and heroes will die. Timing is everything... Wait to attack until you see this signal...
ATTACK NOW!!!
Then rush in and take the baddies out quickly before they lose interest in the tank."
However, I was berated on more than one occasion from lvl 40+ PUG heroes that "Everyone on the team has been playing the game for 40+ levels and I think we all know how herding works." And yet, more often than not lvl 40+ PUGs split the aggro, negate the tank's herd, and cause team members to die as a result. What is going on??? Should I use the bind? Not use the bind? What???
Now, I'm not one of those herding terminators, although I could be :-) . I try to mix it up. 50% herding, 40% mosh pit (whole team runs in and attacks at once), and 10% pulling. I recognize that herding can make a mission dull. Yes, it DOES generally allow the team to finish the mission quicker, and safer, but the battles don't last as long -- and there-in lies the boredom and lack of excitement. So I throw in a mosh pit or a pull here and there. Let the rest of the team shine and use their individual abilities/powers rather than merely rely on the tank's herding abilities. Indeed, sometimes the team is so good, herding is not needed at all and we simply mosh pit the entire mission faster than I could herd it. It all depends on the team and the villains we're facing.
Yet even in this even-handed situation, I run across showboaters who endanger the team and negate the ability for the team to work together... as a team. They don't listen to the leader or the rest of the team, they don't tell anyone what they're planning on doing, and they spring surprise aggro on everyone.
So what have I been doing lately in response? Well, hate to say it, but if a whole team won't pull together and act like a team... I team wipe em all. I play like an idiot. Aggro 3+ groups, scatter (not herd or gather) the aggro, and then find a nice minion by himself to attack and watch as the team dies one by one, overwhelmed by all the aggro I created. It turns out that this is a much more effective and less stressful way of getting the point across. I've found taking the team members to task, berating them for their behavior, and insisting that they play intelligently and cooperatively only serves to stir up anger and resentment and more rebellion. Yet playing as badly as they do seems to get the point across. A tank can run in willy nilly and endanger the team just as easily (if not more easily since tanks can actually BRING aggro to other individual players) as any other hero.
So what do you think? Too vindictive? -

Ok ok B Z- here's the root of why i'm such a meanie: I was looking for an ATI guide when I stumbled across yours. I needed to know why Fast writes was so troublesome for me, and maybe some insight into what variance there was between driver revisions.
None of that.
[/ QUOTE ]
You know, I can't let this slide. You're UPSET at BillZ because he didn't give you the information you wanted??? OMG, dude! Don't go disrespecting someone just because your needs are different. BillZ has put out his thoughts, ideas, and recommendations out of generosity, and all you can do is slam him for it... because he didn't mention something you were hoping to find???
Perhaps you think he is trying to represent himself as the end-all uber-expert of video cards and gaming? Dude. Is it your job to hatefully cast down false idols, or pit your ego against that of others? If so, your work is much more needed in politics. Knock yourself out. As for BillZ, he is far from the evil image you so unjustfully slapped him with and then attacked him for.
BillZ was right when he characterized your banter as "antagonistic." Everything you mentioned, Lallendos, you could have done in a positive, cooperative manner by offering something new. Instead, you chose conflict. It seems like you want to tear down all that BillZ has said, and yet replace it with... nothing??? Yeah, that's productive. I was going to suggest that you write your own guide with the information that you feel is valuable, but you know what? Bah! Just keep it. It'd probably be just another negative, counter-productive attack against something wihtout any real information offered.
As for BillZ's ATI Catalyst 6.4 guide... it's exactly what most players want. A quick fix. We don't NEED to know the HOW or WHY unless we need to fix something that's broken. Like with most things, we start with a base point, and then tweek, tweek, tweek. BillZ's guide is a great STARTING POINT.
In any case, Lallendos, I think you owe BillZ an apology. However, knowing your type, I'd be very surpised if you were gracious or civilized enough to offer one.
