This is pretty shocking and unexpected. I mean all the talk about issue 24, the news about tech knight (which I was really looking forward to), everything up until last night appearing to indicate that CoH had a future.
I purchased City of Heroes and activated my account on May 18, 2004. Unfortunately, due to a housemate having an overly aggressive intended-for-business firewall, I couldn't actually play until I moved out of that house on June 1st. I was able to play City at friends' houses, and even got them sold on the game by letting them try on my account. I remember letting friends use the costume creator pn my account to illustrate their characters for a tabletop roleplaying game (Aberrant, for the record).
I still play my first character. Well, only first on a technicality. She's a reroll of my first character, made less than two weeks after the first character. I've taken this character from a level 1 dark/dark scrapper fighting Contaminated in Outbreak to a level 50 Incarnate who's also taken on many signature characters single-handedly. And in that time I remember learning to play without reliable status protection and with armors that excluded each other. Dark Armor today is so different from Dark Armor at launch, and I'm glad I stuck with the character.
On the forum, I was fairly prolific. I commented in a thread that I wondered if there was a title for 10,000 posts as I was very close, and the first person likely to reach that point (although I believe Satanic_Hamster tried to give me a run for my money). CuppaJo PMed me to tell me that when I made 10,000 posts I could name the title - which I did, as "Forum Cartel." A forum joke at the time that someone else could probably explain far better than I could.
Anyway, I haven't been subscribed here without any breaks, although I wish I had been. There were times I couldn't afford it, and there was one time where I was so annoyed with a few people here that I didn't want to come back.
The best times I've had in this game were the first year, the City of Villains beta, the loyalty period prior to the launch of Going Rogue, and the time I've been subscribed since CoH freedom was launched. That last actually kept me here: All the new costume options kept me paying. I purchase all the costumes and I tinker with all of my characters' looks rather frequently.
Losing this game is one thing, too, but losing this community is pretty painful. I know I've been in a lot of arguments with people here, sometimes over things that seemed trivial or over misunderstandings, and sometimes just trying to make a point, and I really can be abrasive at times whether I want to be or not. But I have enjoyed being here when I could be here
I have also appreciated developer involvement over the years. There have been times when the devs have been more open or more quiet, but overall it seems that devs have often been open to some feedback and discussion. Coming back to learn that BAB and Castle were gone since the end of 2010 was a big surprise, as both were pretty open with players. Not to take anything away from anything done after they left.
(Also, I remember arguing with Tic-Toc years ago, but I remember nothing of the details - finding out BAB = Tic-Toc was a big surprise to me. Also, that iTic, iToc, iTank avatar is brilliant).
Anyway, thank you for the only game that could absorb just about any whacked out concept I wanted to throw at it.
This whole post is rambly. I am having a hard time processing my reaction to this. This was not the worst news I had today, but it's the one I have an easiest time trying to deal with right now.

I guess I should screenshot all my characters and costumes.
I'm at a loss about this, otherwise. -
The only thing I care about regarding coffee talks is that there's no transcripts.
But as for the idea of the thing, I think it's great that they have weekly chats for players to watch, though. Some may interest me, some may not, but I am disinclined to expect that every one of them will be what I want to hear.
What I primarily care about is information. Social chit-chat just bores the heck out of me. I can't sit through an hour of that or mostly that. But other people like that sort of thing, and more power to them, as long as they don't try to drag me along. -
Quote:It's hard to do so. A lot of brown recluse bites result from rolling over on one in your sleep, and it bites in self-defense. You probably practically squished it and it was all "NO U" and bit.My usual policy. Don't tick it off, and it won't try to kill you. Don't make it feel threatened, don't invade its home, and you'll be fine. This has served me when encountering copperheads, rattlesnakes, bears, bobcats. No idea what I ever did to tick of recluses, come to think of it...

Thread had significantly viewer views than codes when I first saw it (I think I saw 64 views). Now it looks like views exceeds codes*, but I'm not sure by how much. There are a lot of codes, and many of those views are repeat views, not unique views.
* Edit to add: Views were still lower than codes when I wrote that. -
This thread currently has fewer views than codes by a huge margin. What'll be frustrating is for late arrivals who dig through the posts trying to find those last few valid codes because so many people are going bottom or middle first.

Quote:I do think I had problems with this during the Issue 22 beta, but this time around they updated instantly, for me anyway. My tokens on Beta haven't updated in ages, not even when copying characters.
On the other hand, most of the costume sets I've unlocked on live are not unlocked on beta.
Quote:I don't care for these Coffee Talk things because a) they're an excruciatingly slow means of communication, for me anyway, and b) despite the fact that the company has been talking more since F2P launched they've been saying less and less. -
Quote:Really? Every token I've generated on live is also generated on test. I purchased all of the Tech Knight pieces about a week ago:Plus, at least for me, I've not generated any tokens on beta/test since Freedom launched, so I couldn't even check it out if I wanted.
But I mostly took that shot to show off customized Hasten and Superspeed. -
Quote:I did this, but I was tier 6 with a lot of unspent tokens from vet rewards when I resubbed earlier this year. Still, the siren song of those costume sets pulled me in.Now see, they talk up the Tech Knight costume set, and it just may give you desire to shell out money to become Tier 9.
I know of at least one player who was nowhere near tier 9 and spent the money needed in a months time to become tier 9, just so they could access the tier 9 costume sets. -
Quote:This is the best post in the thread. The Cthulu Spider (Argiope) on a human hand, for scale. And pants wetting.
(4 minute Youtube clip)
The Meme spiders were all a form of jumping spider. They don't usually get very big (rarely bigger than a fingernail) and can be fun to play with. I've had two of them chase the spot from a laser pointer. I've had several drink from a drop of water in my hand. I've also lured them over to other spiders I don't like in the house and the jumpers have earned their keep.
The GF and I import them into the house from wherever we find them.
Clearly I was right - they are tiny and cute, and not hostile to people. -
Wibbly wobbly timey wimey...stuff.

Yes, but this thread is essentially complaining that extra #237 appeared in episode 202 of <random TV series> after extra #237 who may or may not have been portraying the same character was killed in episode 118.

Quote:It carries no relevance in AT comparisons, I think. It only carries relevance as a possible bug.Statistically noteworthy perhaps, but unless it is intended behavior I don't think it carries any relevance to a comparison between Scrapper and AT X performance.
If it's not a bug and it happens to you, go buy a lottery ticket. -
I always feel bad for the spiders stuck in the bathtub. I get some tissue paper they can climb onto and put them on the counter, where they can explore more easily.
Also, I mentioned those three spiders in the memes being tiny because they couldn't possibly eat all of my liquefied guts. -
A mission where one gets all crits is much more statistically noteworthy than a mission where one doesn't get any. I'd run a second mission to be sure, and then file a bug report if it continued. I might still file the bug report on the first mission just in case.

I started reading under the expectation of a completely different discussion.

Quote:Yes, it does. I'm sorry for mischaracterizing your statement. I really didn't understand what the problem was.It doesn't. It stung A BIT when it happened. I got over it, being a grown-up and all. (And having seen lots worse things happen in life.) I'm just saying that in the context of this particular game at that particular time, it was a teensy-weensy annoying to find an exclusive thing wasn't exclusive any more. You know, like when you get a splinter. You don't dwell on it, you just get aggravated while trying to work this small bit of pain out of your finger, and then years later someone mentions how they got a speck of dust in their eye and you say, "Oh yeah, one time I got a bit by a splinter in my finger, so I get it."
Does that spell it out enough? -
Quote:This isn't true, but I have never seen anyone truly express pride in "white anglo-saxon protestant" culture. It's usually just straight up white supremacy. What exactly do white anglo-saxons do to celebrate their culture? Have biscuits and bangers for breakfast? Get rowdy at football (not the American kind) games? Watch Monty Python? Spell words according to Her Majesty's English? (colour, armour, etc). Head down to the pub for a few pints? Stop and think "What is celebrated here?"Let's come at this in a different perspective. Touting one's cultural heritage is generally viewed as having pride in one's roots. It's also done all the time. African-american culture. Asian culture. Russian culture. Hispanic culture. The list is quite long.
However, as soon as someone wants to tout their White Anglo Saxon Protestant culture, it's immediately labelled as "racism". Why aren't the previously provided examples labeled as "racism" then? It's no different. At least to me, it isn't. But, that's another discussion not for these forums.
But what do I know? My heritage is Irish Catholic. -
Quote:They were exclusive eight years and four months ago, and remained exclusive to anyone who had the appropriate pre-order code until November 28, 2006, when the Veteran Rewards program went live (issue 8), at which point they automatically became available to everyone who had subscribed for 12 months. So that was two and a half years of exclusivity. I don't even redeem the damned things because they clutter up my power list.I can see that, I suppose.
Although I must admit that it did sting a bit when every Vet got the pre-order Prestige sprints, thus devaluing the ones those of us had as badges of early-adoption, it makes some financial sense to let everyone have everything eventually. Doesn't do much for loyalty, though.
If this sort of thing still stings...well, I don't even understand how. -
Quote:Eh, most spiders aren't particularly aggressive toward humans. Besides, those three are tiny.Cute until they sting you paralized, liquefy your innards and then proceed to slurp you up.
Quote:Whomever linked that one of the giant spider eating the snake, may the fleas of 10,000,000 camels infest your nether regions! -
I just don't even get that argument. "Hay guyz, the seven-year old (at Freedom's launch, eight years now) well-established communities on Virtue and Freedom didn't break up to reform on Exalted. This totes proves that VIP isn't worth it." Huh?
-
Quote:It says that Freedom and Virtue have been the most populated servers since launch, and the creation of a new VIP-only server by itself isn't sufficient to attract players from their established communities. I think a lot of people have characters on Exalted, but I think most don't play there much. I have characters on Exalted, but I prefer to play on Champion.+1.
At this point of the thread we have people arguing how great minor perks are. That is fine, but don't try sell it as amazing perks, because that is not the case.
The funny thing is the most populated servers are still Freedom and Virtue, not the designated VIP server. That says it all really.
