  1. I was clearing the wall in Cimerora last night, and a player came up and watched me.... from the other side of the barrier. I finished the spawn and stood there, at the barrior, facing him at the other side. He had his little demon pet following him, and he superjumped away, drawing aggro from the mobs inside there.

I know the story for the zone can't have heroes just running over there defeating everyone since the ITF and another mission or two has you "entering" as the mission, but man, that'd be loads of fun! There's some huge spawns there where you have 30 to 50 soldiers in formation. I'd love to set my blaster loose on them.

TonyV and you other RPers, which servers do you play on? I think it'd be fun to make a character there and try out some of what you do.

The problem for me is I havent been exposed to the ones who RP in good fun. My first and only experience with RPers was with 2 idiots who found it necessary to harass the SG and take things to a unacceptable sexual level.

    [/ QUOTE ]
And those two people stepped far over the boundary of decent behavior by passing themselves off as something else in real life, and by being overly sexual. The mistake you're making is assigning that behavior to all the various roleplayers, regardless of how lightly or deeply they're into it. With that reasoning, I could say that all COX players are overly-aggressive jerks because that's what I find on my teams at times.

For the majority of the game though, you'll find that there is quite a bit of RPing going on in various degrees. Sometimes it may even be just a few comments that would seem appropriate for the character being played. A lot of times, I doubt the player even realizes they're doing it. You have a big beefy Inv/SS tank and yell out "IT'S CLOBBERING TIME!" as you run in to grab aggro... that's minor roleplaying.

I don't have the patience for hanging out in pocket d and typing up long stories. I put that effort instead into AE. But for my two female characters, I give them a "personality". Nothing more. I think quite a few people do that, they just add some personality to their character. That personality doesn't have to be sexual, unlike those two in the SG. My DD is a bit flirtatious, but she's definitely not going to cyber with you. If anyone does start getting ideas, she just says "Hon, I had to sign papers with Feedom Corp promising that I wouldn't play around until the doctors are sure I won't hurt anybody again", and they get the idea I'm not interested.

What those two players did is like when you see losers going into chat rooms pretending they're someone else just to play mindgames. They were losers pretending to be roleplayers.

    [/ QUOTE ]
But pretending to be a super-hero is okay, right?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Never said I had a problem with males playing the role of a male super-hero. My problem is males playing the role of a FEMALE and leading on people to believe they are FEMALE IRL.

Not only that, but then taking it to the next level with involves sexual remarks that are unacceptable.

You should re-read the first 10 pages or so.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm pretty sure you were against males in general playing female characters. Because that's what caused the uproar in the first place.

EVERYONE has agreed with you that people who lie about their gender IRL -for the purposes of disruption, aggravation, etc- are a bad thing.

It's the "guys roleplaying girls are bad" attitude that people are having trouble with.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Wrong

I even said I had a female character. But I dont go around pretending I'm female when playing on that toon.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You don't roleplay that character as female though, do you? Not say YOU YOURSELF are a female in real life, but roleplay the part of a female super-hero.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I dont RP at all. When I log onto the game, I come to "play the game". I dont sit at work waiting until I can get home and assume the role of a super-hero and I surely don't get off pretending to be female....with respect to ANYTHING in life whether it be a RPing game or anything else.

When I would play Mario Cart, I never thought I was Mario. I would just sit and race around the stupid tracks.

I just don't get how people get off on pretending to be someone else or their character IN-GAME. Ok, I can understand on the forums. I can see that the RPing forum here is very active. Its text based and I get it. Its a way for people to be creative and express themselves. I don't think its the same IN-GAME. While in-game, it can and is taken to inappropriate levels. Sure, not by everyone I know. But when does it get turned off?

Again, how do I or anyone else know when you're RPing or just being straight up?

Wiki brought up a good point...is there a RP dedicated server here? If not, why not? If so, then don't bring that crap to other servers.

    [/ QUOTE ]
As it was pointed out, "roleplaying" takes various forms. People don't necessarily "pretend they're that character", a concept you seem to disdain. I have two characters I will "roleplay" on occasion, both female. The reason is the same reason I wrote an arc for AE.... being able to create. When I made these two characters, I wrote an interesting backstory for each. When the characters were online, with their backstories, it seemed odd to have them acting like I would. Since I relate more to my male characters, I never really roleplay them because they're just extensions of me. With those two though, I bring them to life. It's why an author writes a character into a novel.... not because he wants to pretend to be the character, but because he wants to bring that character to life on the page. So my elderly female stone tanker speaks more gently than I would, and is much much more conservative.

Regardless, it's quite ... rude to come into a game that's advertised as a roleplaying game and criticize people for doing so. Even though you may not want to, it is a premise of the game. It's like going to a gym because you like the aerobics class, and then telling the weightlifters that they shouldn't lift weights around you because you don't like the noise.
  5. You know how the zone ends on the wall in Cimerora where the soldiers are, and you can see formations of them on the other side? How do you get inside the fortress? To the other side of the blue barrier?
  6. I don't think it's so much as the city forgets about you when you have only a little inf left, but more like it's not going to keep investing in you if you're not actively fighting crime. "I know you want some rare purple enhancements, but you've been hanging out in AP dancing to a boombox while those other heroes are busy taking down Lord Recluse. If you want us to put a lot more mone into you, we want to see you working harder." Kind of like that.

  8. If you haven't done the Midnighter's Arc, then you won't be able to get to Cimerora. Go to Steel Canyon and speak to your contact in the University. He'll put you on an arc that'll give you access to Cimerora and introduce you to the content there.
  9. Yes, that's what I paid. Just another humorous little story to lighten up the day....

I was bidding on a recipe. I wasn't that concerned about the level, as long as it was above a certain threshold. So I bid five million on it. Would wait to see if it took, then cancel and try the next level. I kept bouncing around like that until I finally got it for five mil. It needed a circuit board or some other silly common salvage. They were going for anywhere between 2K and 5K, so I figured I'd just bid 5000 and be done with it.

You can see where this is going, right?

After hitting 5000000 so many times, when I went to type 5000, my finger just added on the extra three zeros. As my finger was speeding towards the Enter key, my mind started to balk, but I couldn't stop the action in time. I actually cried out "Nooooooooo" while I was depressing the key. ROFL.

I got the salvage with no problem.

I decided to just grin and bear it and be happy that I made someone else VERY happy.

    I wanted to cry

We always had this problem with people who PL'd through Peregrine or gained a lot of levels during certain events. AE really multiplied it by several factors though. Special events only occurred a few times through the year. To get PL'd in Peregrine, you'd have to know that you can get PL'd in PI, and find a way there (something not easy for a level 2 to do).

AE, though, is right there in Atlas Park, and it's the busiest one heroside. Invites for teams come pouring out, and the ones forming teams don't know if the player they're inviting is a new player or an older player who has rolled a new toon. If you look at it from a new player's perspective, it's hard to avoid getting PL'd. You log in, are running around Atlas trying to learn a few things, and you get an invitation to join a team. Next thing you know, you find yourself in an AE mission and you're in your 20's or higher. Now, instead of having to pick out powers one at a time, and getting used to them, you've got to pick out a dozen of them, slot them, learn about enhancements (which is something that's not intuitive), figure out which zones are appropriate for you, figure out how to get to them, etc. We can take all this for granted, but for someone who's seeing this for the first time? No way they can jump into the game and hold up their end of the stick when teamed. And if, by chance, they liked AE and managed to get to 50 and roll a Kheld, they're only going to get worse. Khelds, even for experienced players, can be a challenge just from having to figure out how to slot them.

A new player doesn't even know enough about the game to know that they shouldn't be getting PL'd. If I came into this game now, instead of five years ago, there's a chance I'd be one of those bAEbies.

I have to say, and this is to everyone who has suggested it so far, the notion that Defenders should be left alone because Rad/Sonic Defenders would be overpowered is... *ludicrous*.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I agree. I also think that the notion that defenders need a damage buff because some defenders are outdamaged by some controllers is equally ludicrous, if not more so.

This is a pretty good discussion in a lot of ways, but there's some real communication issues. A lot of things are not clear to me. I would like someone to explain to me the following:

    1. Why do defenders need a damage buff?

    2. How would nerfing controllers improve defenders?

I hold the position that defenders are just fine. I play an emp/arch and have no trouble soloing. Just because I am outdamaged by a fire/kin controller doesn't mean my defender needs a buff. It doesn't mean that defenders in general need a buff. It also doesn't mean the fire/kin controller needs a nerf, and certainly doesn't mean that all controllers need a nerf.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Actually, I do think Controllers should have their secondaries scaled down a little. Not a lot, just a little so that the difference between the Defenders' primaries and the Controllers' secondaries are more noticeable. The Controllers' secondaries are such a large percentage of what Defenders can do, the difference is subtle. It should be more noticeable.

And yes, I do play controllers and I love them dearly.
  13. Keep in mind that many people find Fly, fully slotted and at its cap, to still be too slow. Yes, you could cross a zone with it, but you'll probably wish you sprung for Fly just as a Quality of Life power.
  14. [ QUOTE ]
I agree that the current respec system is incredibly cumbersome. That aside, I'm a bit surprised to hear the more experienced forum-ites not using Mids' Hero/Villain Designer and specifically the Repec Helper. It makes respecs a breeze.

Window > In Game Respec Helper > History Short or History Long

For those that don't know about it, Mids' will pop-up a window that shows the level that powers and slots are taken (History Short), and if additionally desired even the specific enhancements used (History Long). Also, there is no need to Alt-Tab because the respec helper window stays on top.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Unfortunately, even Mids requires that you totally spec out your character, including duplicating your current IOs into their respective powers. While it may save you work and help prevent errors inside the character respecification, you still have to put just as much effort into Mids beforehand. You're really not saving any time or effort, just lessening your chances of making a mistake.

Then there are the guys who ask ANY female character: r u hot irl? It never occurs to them that it might be a guy sitting on the other end of that question. I have fielded a couple questions like that. I answer: Yes, I am. Are you gay? Because I'm a guy. You have never seen a character disappear from your screen so fast.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I had someone on my team who didn't even bother asking me. He just jumped right into "wanna cyber". Hmmmmm. I just assumed it was a "he", anyway..... My dark defender is a wonderfully sexy, if intimidating, female. I have no desire to be female. I just wrote such a good bio for her that it seemed a shame to have her act just like anyone else, so I gave her her own personality. It works too well though. I don't like to burst people's bubbles, so I don't tell them I'm a middle-aged guy. Maybe I should tell them. "Sure I'd like to cyber. I'm gay so lemme get out my male character."

    RP?

    [ QUOTE ]
We (The Stoned Templars) had 2 members who told us they were female and even went out of their way to maintain that "sex" in pretty much everything they did and said. Of course...they were "lesbian". *rolls eyes*

It wasnt until we added Vent and invited them that we came to the conclusion that they were both dudes. They both declined to use Vent every time we asked them to join it.

From that point on...I just assume punch RPers in the face. They're useless if you ask me. Dudes RPing as chicks......get a life. Seriously.

    [/ QUOTE ]
No, you should get a life. Seriously. You come into an MMORPG and complain about the RPG part? Get real! If all you're doing is just playing to get exp or inf, then go play a single-player game.

RPing is not necessarily pretending to be that character. That's a mistake some people make. They seem to think that if you're RPing a character, you're always pretending to be something you're not, and they don't understand that. I have two characters that I mildly RP when the mood strikes and when the company is appropriate (no holier-than-thou anti-RPers). When I RP my split personality female dark defender, it's not because I want to pretend to be her. It's because I think she is an interesting character and I'm trying to bring her to life. When I RP my elderly tanker, I'm not secretly wishing to be an 80-year-old female stone tank, it's that I think she's a unique interesting character and I want to bring her to life too. When an author writes a novel and has all those interesting characters in it, he's not pretending or wishing he was those characters, he's breathing life into them, creating new personalities. Roleplaying is very often that... an act of creation. A smart person would realize that, recognize it when it's presented to them, and enjoy the show.

I used to play Shadowbane. Loved that game! One of our guildmembers was a woman that we didn't realize was really a guy RPing. He had it down pat, and was a high officer in our guild, often being in charge of our city. We played alongside her for a couple years. When the excuses why she couldn't use Ventrilo didn't work anymore, she finally came clean. Some of our guildmembers really didn't take to it well. I thought it was great. His character was much much more interesting than he ever could have been had he just been himself, and he added a whole new dynamic to the game. We all thought she was a conservative, polite woman and it totally changed our demeanor when she was around, adding a lot of variety into our game. And even though I knew on an intellectual level that people aren't necessarily what they appear to be, he did it so well I had no clue at all.

As to the OP.... there's different levels of RPing. You may go fully into your role and all discussion and actions are determined by the game environment, always being the hero/villain, for example. Or you may just have an interesting character bio and play it up a bit. I saw one hero who was a "demon" in one of the lesser circles of "Heck". He would come out with things like "Gaze upon me and feel mildly apprehensive!" I laughed for hours. That's the great part of playing an MMO. If someone on your team is RPing, look at it as a free sideshow you get to enjoy along with everything else (assuming they do it well or entertaining).

As it stands now, do what I do: use your cell phone to take a picture of your enhancement screen

    [/ QUOTE ]
I've done that. Except that with IOs now, you can have partial sets spread across several powers for frankenslotting, and there's no telling them apart unless you hover over each one. Apocolypse: Damage looks identical to Apocolypse: Accuracy/Damage.
  20. While people have said it's not necessary (and it isn't really necessary. Actually, respecs themselves aren't necessary.), they do point out that they use third party tools or carefully write down what they want to do and plan it out, and that's why I very strongly support it. Frankly, there isn't a single thing in the current respect system that aids the user in any way. I said once that respecs are as difficult as they could be without intentionally making them more difficult, and I stand by it. You're not spared a single action that you've ever performed.

While not necessary, think about it people..... imagine being able to type "/respec", click on a slot to remove it, and click on another power to drop the slot there. 40 seconds later, you're done. Or just click on a power and hit a "remove" button, then click on the power you want in its place. A minute later, you're back in the game again!

I think that would be incredibly awesome. I have a bunch of characters I want to make some changes to, but I simply live with them the way they are because I don't want to spend all that time respeccing and chance making a mistake that's even worse than what I'm living with.
  21. When respecs were first introduced, they were a wonderful feature. Even as good as they were, it wasn't expected that players would respec very often. Only three respec trials were created. Eventually, respecs were given out with new issues so that players could compensate for changes in powers. And then they were given out as vet rewards. And now there's recipes offering respecs. In other words.... players respec a LOT.

Please consider making a respec system that actually is friendly to the players. If you examine our current system, there really isn't a single mechanism in place to offer any ease of use at all. None! Whether you want to totally pick out different powers, or just move a single enhancement slot, you have to carry out every single action you've ever carried out when leveling up. All over again!

When you're level 10, it's no big deal. A level 50 who realizes they don't use their snipe but once in a blue moon must go through every single leveling and slotting action they've ever done throughout their career. Even the most minor of changes can tie up a player for hours. Sure, people say "Plan it out using Mids" first. But really, should an internal mechanism like respeccing practically require that you use a third-party program? Either you spend time in Mids, or you spend time writing down every power you have and every enhancement in those powers. For players that do it a lot, it can go relatively quickly (compared to other players). And they may say "It's no big deal, I can do it in 10 minutes". But what they forget is that they can only do it that quickly because they've spent what is most likely dozens of hours doing it before. I would estimate that the average player, to properly drop a single power and take on another, must spend between a half an hour to an hour to write down everything they have, write down which IOs are in which powers, carefully go through the entire leveling up procedure, and then place all those IOs back into all those powers (which aren't being changed anyway).

Please please please please please consider giving us this quality of life feature. Let us just move slots, drop powers, and pick up other powers without having to go through the entire ordeal all over again.

At its core, the Blaster AT is all about doing massive damage from range.

    [/ QUOTE ]

At its core, I disagree with this definition. Inferno, Short Circuit, Fire Sword Circle, and Havoc Punch are just a few very good melee-range attacks.

I would tend to recommend Fire/Ice. You have two good approaches to mitigation- the corner + ice patch, and Shiver. Shiver will double or triple your lifespan, because enemies will have half or a third of the recharge. One warning-it's nearly a half-circle and it's got a HUGE range. You may aggro people you can barely see. Fire primary brings lots, LOTS, of damage. Firebreath/Fireball will generally drop even con minions without using either Aim or Build Up. Yes, ten at a time. Yes, in four seconds. Yes, every ten seconds or so. Yes, it's fun.

I like Sonic and Ice primaries, and mental and elec and energy secondaries, as well.

Maybe this will help your playstyle.

    [/ QUOTE ]
That does it! I'm respeccing and getting Firebreath back. I'll drop my snipe. I hate giving it up as I like having a high damage attack with huge range, but I really miss my firebreath.

If you shiver first on a spawn its boss + and or (minions and lts). If you lead with it you take the alpha, and have to deal with more enemies which undoes much of the mitigation from shiver. Icepatch certainly will help with the minions, but given the duration and the duration of the boss battle its something of a push. You don't have to deal with them while fighting with the boss, but have to deal with them immediately after.

If you go into hover mode you have the mitigation of only ranged attacks hitting but that is offset by having the non boss enemies pelt you with their ranged attacks.

I was on a Hollows PUG with Mr. Bill once. In fairness, the team was doing really well and moving along at a good pace. However, after we all trained up, Mr. Bill made an unfortunate power choice, and we all found out about it at the next fight, and every fight thereafter.

We attacked the next group of enemies, only to find Mr. Bill lagging behind. Team chat in every encounter for the rest of the mission went something like this:

Mr. B: Nooo! Let me pull! I have Teleport Foe!
Mr. B: Nooo! I have Teleport Foe!
    Mr. B: Nooooooo!!!

I can understand wanting to try out a shiny new power, but we'd been doing fine without using pulls. It may make me a bad person, but I took perverse enjoyment watching this mini-meltdown.
