There's a concern that it won't stop with the Elemental set; that this WON'T be the "one and only" outfit they've gone rando-box with for long. I think that's a valid concern. Games that use this kind of scheme do tend to develop a habit of locking more and more items into it as time goes on. They don't just pop one round of desirable items in there and call it a day. They KEEP putting things in there, sometimes at the expense of releasing items in other, less random ways.
That's exactly what is going to happen. I remember when we had people scoffing that most good costume pieces would be gated behind the Super Booster concept. No way! The developers would NEVER do that to loyal customers!

Lo and behold, they are gated. We get a free piece every now and then, but the really good stuff...? We're paying for every bit of that.

I don't give a damn about the Elemental set. I'll be pretty steamed when a set I really want is a thing I'll have to gamble with real-world money for, though. Promise.

At that point I will decline to gamble, tyvm.
  2. I will believe it when I see it; after all, this is the bunch that thinks my level 19 Controller should be able to solo Praetorian Vanessa DeVore - plus about nine decoy clones.

Please prove me wrong! I wait with interest.

Positron: As we move into the future, if we don’t see the needle move upwards on experienced Incarnates completing Keyes, Underground, TPN, and MoM to numbers comparable to BAF and Lambda then we will have to start looking at other options for the trials that come after that. Will it be a new currency? I’d love for it NOT to come to that, but you’ve made it clear that you want to keep getting all the old currency out of the older content.
The answer is not rocket science. Its really not.

*Problem: People prefer to run BAF and Lam.

*Problem: We want players running our newer content.

Solution: Make the new content...... wait for it..... MAKE THE NEW STUFF LIKE BAF AND LAM! Problem solved! Genius!

If players do not find content fun to do, it will not get run. You can try the carrot and stick, you can beg plead nerf and yell: it still won't get done, because many of us want to spend our limited gaming time HAVING FUN, not debt farming. We're annoying like that.

Use the stick spproach, get out the nerf-gun and see your shiny new content go the way of the Mission Architect, which so far stands as the greatest waste of developmental resources we have seen yet.

If the developers want to add incarnate content to that list of wasted resources via nerf or overuse of carrot-and-stick techniques, the ones they hurt will be themselves. The time and money wasted will be thier own.

Just cast a glance over the nearest empty MA building, next time you fly past.

So, what's being sold in this pic? Look, just like the Give Gift emote, she's giving a present. Only thing is, she's presenting like a baboon in estrus. And she's offering a box. A box by her crotch. A crotch that seems to imply she's not wearing anything over her crotch. Did I mention a *box* by her *crotch*? You know that looks nothing like the Give Gift emote, right?

I expect such a graphic on the cover of Playboy. I've had a less revealing pic removed from the forums for not being "T for Teen."

There's enjoying the beauty of the human form (even if green) and then there's overt sexual pandering. This is the latter. I'd rather have seen this elf nude in just the gloves and boots frolicking in the snow and throwing a snowball then... *this* pose.

I mean, what was even the thought here: That you would get sales by sexualizing fur-lined clothing? Is there a big market for that fetish? "Oh, yeah, jus' like Mrs. Cluas, baby!"

And when you were selling the Gunslinger Pack, where was the drawing of the shirtless cowboy in what appeared to be assless chaps? Oh, that wouldn't have been appropriate? Hmmm....

Yeah, I know, this thread will be full of those saying, "The comic book industry panders to cheap sex all the time." My response, "Yes, but Paragon Studios doesn't have to also."
*raises brow* Not sure if serious.....

Julius: There was a proposal on Beta server to lessen the rewards of BAF and LAM at some point in a character's career and force them to move up the Incarnate content food chain so that they could properly progress. Oh how I wish this had happened.
I don't. Do this and completely kill whatever lingering interest I have in running this content - not that I have much left anyways, since I detest Keyes and am not interested in either TPN or MoM.

These newer trials are not enjoyable. They're really not, and judging from the numbers I see running BAF/LAM, seems like I'm not alone.

I am waiting to see the Dark Astoria content. I have a feeling its going to be solo me against +4 [or higher!] AVs on the lowest setting. At that point I will abandon the idea of Incarnates entirely.

Moral of the story: If I'm suffering, I have to get paid. I don't do it for fun, and I don't PAY to do it. The developers seem to have this idea everyone loves debt-farming. Do they [players] really love it? Sure are a lot of BAFs/LAMs going on for that theory to hold water.

People behaving badly on the Internet is a huge problem. I'm delighted that one can come into this game and not have to endure the name-calling seen in every other forum on the Internet, practically. You were rude and hostile, and you got smacked down. Please try it and get back to us! That should be good for several more walls of text.... if you thought the b-word smackdown was bad, you're just gonna love this one.

The Game Masters have all the power, and you have... well.... none. Its a thing to keep in mind.... plus I'd shush about that rap music thing right now, its not going to end well. Dread: Whether you get a strong leader or not is kind of a toss up, if you don't feel other people lead them as well as you could, lead them yourself.
I have led trials and been led on them. As a leader, it is frustratingly common for league members to simply ignore directions, EVEN IF SHOUTED IN ALL CAPS. People say "sheesh ramp it down," even as they continue to not do what is needed to succeed. *facepalm*

I have in turn seen other leaders go through this - a lot. Let's blame this on the leader, shall we? Sounds like a plan.

    Quote:
But I don't agree with nerfing the trials to compensate for bad leadership or bad players that can't make decisions for themselves to stay effective during a trial when leadership is slacking. There are plenty of resources to find out what to do at whatever point during a trial. If you are doing a complete PuG then you can't really complain if things aren't perfect... its a PuG.
So people on PuGs should be locked out of completing trial content? Or perhaps only people belonging to the same SG should be allowed to enter the queue to begin with? These sound like excellent plans, and I hope the next patch implements them.

    .... or NOT.

I don't call a decent strategy allowing intelligent players to succeed a "nerf." Nerfs should not be needed, as an intelligent strategy should be doable before the trial ever gets out of Beta. But what do I know? Plainly, nothing.
  14. ^^^ I am afraid that they'll make solo Incarnate stuff so hard that it'll be impossible for a lot of ATs to do solo. I remember Trapdoor and how he was a big roadblock for some of my alts; I had to get friends to help me.

Might not be able to do that with "solo" content. Kind of makes me nervous, especially since I get the impression they really don't WANT us soloing.
  15. QR: I miss Lord Recluse and think he was a lot more fun that anyone in Praetoria. Recluse is epic. Cole is rather bland.

Plus, Recluse WAS right: jello-wrestling does not qualify as a mandate to govern.

I would be good with Recluse nuking Fort Darwin from orbit. Its polluted now, it needs to die. Longbow cooties, ugh.
  16. "They can add all kinds of stuff as Trial exclusvie unlocks, like costume parts, auras, emotes, temp power and so on, on top of the faster progress they give."

I do not like the newer Trial components such as damage pulses, unresistable knock-up [puns not intended], INSTANT DEATH, no hospital + punitive rezzes and one person making an entire trial fail = cue insults and screaming, Sam I Am: I do not like green eggs and ham.

*I do not like instant and unresistable death
*I do not like level 54+ enemies [can't wait till we work up to level 80+ enemies, eh? Me either...]
*I do not like being thrown around like a rag doll with mag 8 KB protection
*I do not like people who cannot follow instructions borking my chance to succeed
*I do not like seeing people screaming at and insulting each other
*I don't like a stream of useless rewards, trying for the one I need

You can tie all the costume parts, emotes, fluff, candy, nonsense, L33t L00T, smilies, adorableness, faulty reasoning, pile-driving repetitiveness and even a few craptacular temp powers [oh, WHOOOOO! WHAT SAYS INCARNATE LIKE THOSE!!!] on toppa the pile you want.

I can ignore all that stuff. Sounds great for the future of the game, right? I know you think so.

    Not everyone agrees.

Butane: To me, solo path is 'a bird in the hand', while UG, TPN and MoM may as well be an orchard with an army of hillbillies screaming at the top of their lungs and blindly thrashing at each bush with clubs.
If only it were that fun! Phase Two: Defeat Fuzzy Lumpkins and allies. Now that would be a FUN trial. lol

QgeneralR: Took my +3 Defender on a MoM tonight, just for giggles.

What surprises me - and this isnt the first time I've seen it, and I'm not prompting this response either... is the amount of "man, this is no fun at all" I'm seeing. One person had been on 5 different leagues today, trying to complete this trial and when this one failed as well, they got quite upset.

Its as if they took the mindset from Keyes and just 'ported it over to MoM piecemeal. Unresistable KU/KD/KB/whatever it is, for the lose! Especially when coupled with the new tactic in town, unresistable damage pulses. Those are so enjoyable, so absolutely INCARNATE I just can't tell you.

Now, we can have Smiley-Girl in here running hither, thither and yon trying desperately to do all the damage control she can, as if she were a little Dutch girl trying to plug as many holes in the dike with her fingers as she can. "No oh no no NO, its not nearly as bad as you think it is! "

But one person cannot keep a dam from breaking. And one person cannot mindwash an entire player-base into thinking this stuff is fun, when.... its really not. I am glad that the second half of the Incarnate stuff does not really interest me, because I am here to have fun.

    FUN. Remember that word?

Rhetorical question only. Back to BAF!

OP: The fact that any of these trials is failable due to players simply not understanding what's happening is BAD DESIGN. It CAN be fixed, but the developers need to make some hard decisions either way. Either simplify the goals so a mob can understand them, or cut that mob down until it's a single group. I think you're going to have to do one or the other, or they will indeed wither and dry up the second there's an alternative.
Right now, I actually have trial fatigue. I've run MoM and TPN a few times each, and really have no desire to repeat the experience - especially on a melee character. UG is too easy to fail at the regenning WW. Profitable till then, then *ROADBLOCK!*

I don't find these new mechanics fun, and I hate debt-farming. Those of you in love with these punishing developments, have at it.

Tex: One time the LFG tool made me the league leader of a Lambda, and, unable to figure out how to move players from team to team, I just hit the Quit League button to escape. I also got tagged as Desdemona's escort one time, and though I toughed it out til the end, I spent the whole trial worried I would mess up and have 23 angry players screaming at me. I am grateful for the players who step up to the plate to perform these roles. I think a lot of players are very uncomfortable filling them.
I was recently on an UG where they were going for the bomb badge. Unfortunately we had a player who accidently made a wrong turn and triggered an explosion, ruining the chance for the badge.

The screaming-at, name-calling and insults including a heaping helping of four-letter words heaped on this person for their mistake were bad to the point where I haven't really sought out an UG trial since. I'm sure I will one day, but my eagerness is gone. I loved UG. These trials create an incredible amount of pressure on both participants AND leaders.

For that reason I don't think I'll remain on any badge-specific leagues in the future, if I do I will hang back until the objective is completed. I have even seen anger on the DfB trial if badges are lost, like people don't run that 5 times in a row anyways! Master-of runs? No thanks; Im not going to be the one dog-cussed in league chat, tyvm.

I rarely lead trials, but every now and then I did. The behavior I've seen lately makes this a risky proposition.

NO it does not fail for one hit, but it has some other bad mechanic making that phase of the trial last longer, or some such thing.

It might cause failure if you do it too much though.... not sure, have not run this enough.

Yeah, we all know it: you ran a MM through Lambda one time, and you were so awesome that every time the turrets sniped a pet, that merely increased your defense and you got an influence boost on top of that! You are simply made of pure win, right through to your delicious nougat center. Plus, you never ever die no matter where you might be.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I take everything you post with a large grain of salt, and this more than ever. And when you develop a Plant Corr or 'troller build with BOTH good ST and AoE damage, please let us know. I'd pay a dollar to see that one.

I don't like extra layers of gimmicks and scripts so I will stick to the BAF and LAM for the foreseeable future.
I think of it kinda like how Bank of America got curbstomped over the debit card fee thing: instead of going "sorry, our bad" and learning from their mistake, they withdrew that fee, then immediately adjourned to a conference room somewhere to try and figure out a NEW fee which hopefully no one would notice.

The developers here are doing the same thing: "Wow, they hated Keyes and are refusing to run it! Ok, cue plan B: we'll fix Keyes but put these mechanics somewheres else, where they won't be noticed."

Yeah, good luck with that. BoA's curbstomping continues, and people in CoX will continue to avoid content they dislike.

Attempts to say "Well, you're running BAF and LAM too much, so we're nerfing those rewards, or removing them entirely" will not mean people flock to the new trials; it'll just get the difficult content ignored. I say this because even now, there is someone[s] in a conference-room somewhere trying to float this exact strategy, to which I say: DON'T. For all our sakes.
  24. The problem is that even if you want to rez someone, they're under a purple patch. Or stacked purple patches! I notice these patches also grow after time. Nice!

I had my Emp on one of these, and she did what she could. We had a rule that only people with Ressurrect or Howling Twilight or other such rezzes could accept Desdemona's rezzes, so we could pick others up. This seemed to work well, but the trial still failed due to other factors.

If you are a MM it is nothing but awful punishment to try to do things like Lambda. its almost like someone decided they hate MMs and wants to punish them! Just ridiculous.

My MMs are waiting for that solo Incarnate content to come down the pike, I can tell you. Till then they are running no trials but the occasional BAF.

EDIT: Well ,come to think of it they might do ok on UG. I've seen MMs do well on that one.... that's it though, BAF and UG for my MMs.
