An interesting point.
World of Warcraft, 5 regular mobs (or 2 elite mobs) can completely overshadow the mighty adventurers who have, if they've been raiding since classic.. Slain 4 green dragons, 1 Blue Dragon, slain 3 fully grown Black Dragons, untold number of empowered drakes, an elemental lord of fire, several servant of the old gods, two old gods, the 2nd most powerful being on the planet twice, a gigantic demon, the 4th and 5th most powerful beings on the planet, the 3rd most powerful being on the planet, a corrupted titan (essentially a god) and a blue dragon aspect (a dragon god).
You think we have it bad when you've been through all that and the regular bad guys at the start of each new expansion in a number of 3 or more can give you trouble, by now you and your buddies should be the most feared thing on the face of the earth, with you around, why on earth would anyone decided to make trouble?
[/ QUOTE ]
That . . . does sound much worse than what we have here. Putting WoW's boss situation in those terms makes player characters look . . . weak.

I work at a hotel. Hey, the room is just gonna sit empty anyway, someone could say, if they don't come in and take it. So why not rent the room to them for just the labor cost of cleaning staff?
and when the guest leaves the hotel, they've got nothing to show for, no physical goods. What a ripoff!
[/ QUOTE ]On the other hand, I bet your hotel charges a room rate about equal to that of the same style room at other hotels. Can you name another place charging six bucks for 100kb of storage space? Data storage is ridiculously cheap. Companies give it away just to make it look like they're offering you some great benefit. Again, the MA and three slots aren't what you're buying here -- you have that with your subscription. All you're getting is a tiny amount of additional data space.
Start charging $600 a night for a Motel 6 quality room and I bet you'll have plenty of people considering it a "ripoff".[ QUOTE ]
Besides, there's another value to putting a price on something. If something costs real money, some people will choose not to get it.
[/ QUOTE ]That I can agree with. Of course, if you set the bar high enough you not only block out people who "don't care" but also those who "don't care enough" to pay that amount. They could charge $15 a slot and they'd block out those who "don't care". They'd block out a lot of potentially interested people as well.
Personally, I'd go $3 a slot. Enough money to make it worth offering and cheap enough to overlook the fact that it's still a well overinflated price for 100kb of space. I wouldn't think less of someone who decided to pay their asking price for the slots but I think it's a valid point to call them overpriced.
[/ QUOTE ]
Although I don't personally see anything wrong with paying for slots, I must admit this person makes some VERY valid points. -

$6 to save a 100k file? No thanks.
[/ QUOTE ]
Gotta go along with this. I don't mind them selling more story slots, but the price is WAY too high. I'd maybe pay $5 for like 10 extra slots, anything more than that is a little ridiculous.
[/ QUOTE ]
They really should allow us to use some of the slots as added storage, for like custom groups and stuff, I'd buy all 5 then, use a couple for some villain groups and the rest for arcs.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's . . . a great idea!
Ofcourse they would have to up the files size limit FIRST. -
It's very easy to see who is a noob BEFORE you invite them to a team.
Either you check before you invite them, only team with friends and sg mates, or you leave yourself susceptible to noobs. This was true before the AE as well. -

I agree with this. For me, the graphics at CoH's release were satisfactory, and the upgrades we had when CoV came out were in no way worth the performance hit (especially the fire graphics). I'd bought a $3000 SLI system 10 months before CoV came out, and the CoV upgrades erased my performance gains.
Sure, better graphics are good, but the performance tradeoff needs to be worth it. I've got a high end system (Quad Core, Nvidia 8800 GT, 4 gigs of ram), and CoH still slows down under some conditions. I really don't want a repeat of the CoV upgrades.
[/ QUOTE ]
Mmmhm.
I've never understood the game company obsession with 'cutting edge' graphics- I think it has more to do with corporate *****-measuring contests to attract the interest of the gaming rags than anything else.
The example I like is the little mod that could, Counterstrike.
It was the #1 online FPS for many years in spite of its Half-Life derived graphics.
Or because of them?
At some point in my CS career I looked around and pretty much anybody with a computer that had a pulse could play CS butter smooth.
Cutting edge hardware and graphics get all the press, but most people have crummy-to-mediocre computers, and they all play games too. Keeping them in the loop may not be fun and sexy and get you fawning press from the industry gossip rags, but it will make you $$$$$.
[/ QUOTE ]
THIS. Graphics are completely overrated in the gaming industry.
If gaming companies (mmo or not) would spend as much time on story, game play length, replay value instead of fancy graphics (oooh we can do bloom--who the [censored] cares if you game sucks [censored] to play and isn't fun?) and hype MANY titles in the last year or so would not have failed upon arrival or been closed down (mmos) due to sucktastic gameplay. -

[ QUOTE ]
I'd be all for it, if it didn't take away from getting some actual content.
A graphics upgrade ISN'T content.
[/ QUOTE ]
No MMOs that I know of ever did a graphics update without it being related to delivering new content. take a look at the new Jumpgate...it's not using the old engine.
In EVE...their update was also to help make the new avatar feature(where you get out of your ship and explore space stations) possible(not sure if that's live yet...been out of touch).
Even Blizzard has expressed their desire to upgrade the graphics of WoW at some point in the future. So its silly to act like graphics upgrades are unprecedented and have no purpose, just because you don't like Bloom.
[/ QUOTE ]
I said a graphics update. What on earth does ANY of that have to do with an ENGINE update?
My point is that gameplay > shiney graphics.
Also bloom is stupendoulsy overused currently.
And I was talking specifically THIS game. Couldn't care less what other mmos are doing. -

Leave AVs/Ebs as is. I like the challenge.
[/ QUOTE ]
And what if that challenge changes form and presentation, but remains the same difficulty?
Because that is what's being proposed here.
.
[/ QUOTE ]
Depends on the form and presentation.
I would be against throwing more EBs at folks just cause we'd like a new form and presentation.
EDIT: Tediousness of having to deal with multiple EBs DOES NOT equate to fun or challenge. -
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
Is that what you are talking about?
[/ QUOTE ]
Where to draw the line of EB vs AV conceptually is obviously not the simplest matter, but my feeling would be the following rules:
Flunkies
Anyone who is a flunky for someone else should be an EB (at best) in all but the most extreme circumstances (ie. Silver Surfer material).
Players
Could this character be mistaken for a player (taking into account background and appearance/powers), if so, they should be an EB. This blanket would cover the entire Freedom Phalanx and co. as well as Lord Recluse and pals. They're heroes and villains, we're heroes and villains.
Monstrous
Does this character *look* like it should take a team to fight? If so AV or Monster class is fine. Dr. Vaz in his flesh-mecha, the clockwork king and pretty much all the current monsters fall under this.
Story Excuse
Recluse has activated the web? AV. Aeon and his gizmo? AV. Romulus and his massive Nictus infusion? AV. Obviously this has to do with presentation, some will be more believable than others, but personally I'm just happy so long as they *try* to explain why we're fighting an AV instead of an EB.
That's it... yes there is wiggle room and yes it will vary based on the perspective of whose deciding, but again, I'd just be happy if they *tried* to go in this direction, even if I didn't agree with all their choices.

Of all things in this thread, I agree with this. -

I have also posted suggestions about restricting ma use to characters that are of that zone's level or lower. This is to force characters that want to use the AE out of the zones that they have out leveled.
it would put a stop to level 50's broadcasting for AE teams in Atlas or Mercy.

And absolutely kill, say, my SG mission, as well as making teaming much more difficult.

You assume, and you are wrong.
[/ QUOTE ]
Because of course, you are automatically right?
[ QUOTE ]
Better graphics do not automatically look better. I HATE...
[/ QUOTE ]
And here we go. I hate something so of course there is no merit in it or the devs doing it because...I hate it.
I already gave you an example of an MMO(one that's more successful than this one btw) that did just that. They completely upgraded their old engine. That's not a crime or horrid. The developers wanted to do certain things and they thought that an upgraded engine would work better for what they wanted. You think that people who had older systems didn't protest on their forums because the specs for the game went up? They're STILL doing better than COX and increasing their numbers after the upgrade...so perhaps it was for the best. Everquest also upgraded their graphics a few times...and one of their upgrades practically forced most of their players to buy new graphics cards and killed off support for an OS.
Ironically I'm not arguing that I hate the current COX graphics...I'm simply saying that because you(a singular person) does not want something to happen...does not mean that it isn't to this game's overall benefit.
A lot of people wanted the new Diablo 3 to look more like the old Diablo 2. The developers decided that's not the way that would best serve the game going forward.
I don't know what the entire playerbase is thinking and I don't pretend to. I think its rather foolish to assume that everyone likes exactly what I like for the exact reasons I like it. I'm stating that there may well be very compelling reasons for graphics upgrades of SOME sort. If you think that means the devs are automatically going to try to make it look like Far Cry 2(which was just an example I used) then you're free to do that.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'd be all for it, if it didn't take away from getting some actual content.

After skimming through this, I really hope you guys are not suggesting this game do anything like CO.
This game has kept my attention for years. This game just needs updating. This game Rox.
[/ QUOTE ]
For me it isn't about doing anything like CO in a an attempt to copy it. Although it would be equally silly to NOT do something worthwhile just because CO does it by the same token.
About CO, I'm hearing things like more environmental interactivity, using your sideskills to build things to help you in missions and trying to better immerse the player in the gameworld...whatever other faults it may have(and they may well be many), you don't NOT do that sort of thing just to spitefully claim you're different from the competition.
I don't want COX to copy COs combat system...but if the developers finally decide to improve/upgrade the engine to allow for a wider scope of mission types, better environments and the addition of elements to help make playing the core game more compelling, then I don't really give a flying freem if those are things that CO is doing.
There are people who are happy with COX in its current state and just want more content, costume parts and missions. There are also people who think that the game could use new elements(myself among them) to make it more compelling to play. That the former will get what they want is a given...you've been getting that for the past five years. I'd just like a little more attention paid to the latter.

Nicely put. This post is the gist of a lot of the things I've been saying even in relation to new COX content. Fluff is still fluff. If you want to impress me long-term...make the core game more compelling. Expand gameplay options...not just costume options. No matter how pretty they may be.

As nice as power cust would be in this game (and is in another game) I fundamentally have to agree. -
LOL at the idea of there being many (if any at all) straightforward plots in a game about superheros.
Also just from reading it Venture's plot in that arc sounds pretty straightforward compared to about 90% of what is in game, AE or non-AE.

Well, at least we get a good idea why BABs doesn't post more often.
Why is it that every time I see one of these embittered posts, I almost always recognise the poster's name?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because you're a Cuppa Incarnate with 20,000+ posts and probably spend way more time here than you should?
In any case, I don't know if I'm "embittered" and I don't think I have a habit of making "embittered" posts save on a very few issues. I know the cat was trying to make a joke but I read it as a joke at the expense of the player base. As it has been awhile since I've been really jazzed by any of their additions to the game, I stand by my statement.
It also deserves mentioning that I don't have anything personal against any of the Devs. I don't think that I know them and I don't really care to know them. When they do something "good," I don't really experience gratitude because I pay for the game and their doing "good" is my minimal expectation. Since it is mostly my friends and SG that have kept me playing for the past couple years, I have some doubts that they are meeting my minimal expectations as a customer.
Bagging on the idea that worthy suggestions could come from the player base - even with one's tongue firmly in-cheek - is not my idea of them doing good. As a customer, it grinds my gears.

If you are not willing to get help or load in Inspirations, every two days you can cancel a mission for every of your characters and still get reward and be able to move on to the next task.
This does not sound heroic? It`s only in your head. Just imagine that you have beaten the AV and then hit Cancel Mission. It will be our little secret. Oh, and make sure that you set your mission on Invincible before cancelling, you will even get more reward haha

And stripping down the AE to the point you can make nothing more challenging then a normal mission defeats the prupose of having it in the first place.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, the purpose of the AE wasn't to allow people to create more challenging missions, it was so that the player base could create their own stories. The fact that you could create something more difficult that a "normal mission" doesn't mean that it was its sole purpose.
[/ QUOTE ]
The purpose of the AE was for the player base to express its creativity. Limiting the difficulty of the missions to that of the standard missions the dev created, goes against that purpose. I can play a kill mission anywhere, i can play a pick the flashies anytime, a defend object etc. If i want to play one that truely with test my abilities and play style i pretty much have to use the AE, cause just about anything short of an AV in this game is totally solo-able to just about any AT.
The AE allows for a player to create a mission that amps up the difficulty level for even a standard solo player. That is a level of creativity that i dont think should be lost simply because it can be farmed. Those that farm, have always and will always farm. If they dont use the AE, they will simply go back to using the family farm or the TV farms or whatever people used before issue 14 went live.
Killing the level of customization availible to kill farming is simply hurting all the players. And those complaining about the farming and forcing the Dev's hands in this reguard as just cutting off their own noses to spite their faces. When the AE is totally wattered down and no one can make or see their ideas come to light anymore, no one will use it and those that complain about the farmers will still have no missions to play, and no teammates that want to join them anylonger.
[/ QUOTE ]
I agree with you. I was merely pointing out that mission difficulty should be a result of the creative process, and that was the original intention of the system. To offer a creative outlet for users (upon which mission difficulty could be derived), not to offer a facility just for the sole purpose of making personal challenges.
[/ QUOTE ]
I would disagree. Strongly. If it were meant to be only about making stories, then they would never have taken it out of 13 to allow us to specifically make custom enemies. And in beta they made them use the PLAYER mods for their abilities. Making challengeing enemies goes hand in hand DIRECTLY with being able to make stories.
From what's been going on lately I'd say the players who care ONLY about "story" is greatly OVER-exaggerated. -

Now that the technology is in place, Issue 15 is our first opportunity to provide a number of more universally themed costume change emotes as part of a regular content update for all of our players. And..............the final stake through the heart of B_I's paranoid fantasies about booster packs stealing all the good stuff from everybody else.
