Quote:Some people are leaving now. Also, as mentioned, this forum may end before the game ends.TL;DR = Lol. Goodbyes, wut?
ITT: Sanity.
Please, for the love of all that is platonic..
Why are you non devs/mods/rednames/celebs making goodbye threads now?
What does it matter in any case?
People can say goodbye when and how they choose. I don't see why their choices are a concern to others. -
Quote:Dofus is an interesting game with unique game play for an MMO, approximated only by it's concurrently operated sequel. But, it has a few issues that prospective players should be aware of.Now that some of the rage is gone, I'm almost certainly going back to Dofus, which is... absolutely nothing like CoH. Really, my biggest problem with it is me. I much prefer to solo, and Dofus (especially at higher levels) is not a solo-friendly game. The devs also like to put the focus on tactical thinking and team cooperation rather than simply steamrolling battles, so you can't just jump in and start tearing through monsters, which is sometimes exactly what I want to do. But I know lots of people there, and the summer event is going on right now (just extended for two weeks, in fact), and I have some decently high-level characters there, so I'll probably resubscribe. (It's only $7 a month, or $60 for a whole year, so that's no strain on my budget)
One of them you mentioned already, regarding it being a game difficult to solo. This is partly due to the more sophisticated and difficult battles of higher level, but also due to the drop system. The prospecting thresholds for rare items often preclude any chance to drop them solo.
Another problem with the game, in my view, is that it is as anti-Cottage Rule as a game can get.
There have been massive changes to game systems and total restructuring of the way some classes work many, many years after the game was released. Very few classes have escaped some revision, with some being changed extensively. Due to this, one is often forced to rebuild their characters and seek new equipment to function properly in a class which may have little resemblance to what it originally was. Couple this with the resources required to craft high level equipment at times being hard to drop, and it gets annoying.
The most obvious examples of these wild changes to the game are shown in the frequent revisions to the AP/MP drain/theft systems, and the huge revision to the way Sacriers worked.
For those not familiar with the game, your amount of AP determines what you can do on a turn... MP your range of movement. Sacriers do extra extra damage from being wounded, and have strong map manipulation skills. They also have some tanking ability, when backed up by healers or through self-healing with certain weapons.
For those wishing to check this game out, be aware that the only constant in Dofus is change... often inexplicable change, or subsequent changes made due to the developers failing to anticipate the ramifications of previous changes.
It's a fun game though, if you like tactics, and don't mind going with the flow whenever Ankama decides to spin their Wheel o' Development and apply whatever change it indicates.
Ahhh yes, another thing to mention. The game features PvP much more than this one, and doesn't change how the powers work in PvP vs. PvE. At times this causes powers to be changed to improve PvP at the expense of their use in PvE.
Also, access to some of the resources for crafting can only be accessed by those aligned, which makes them subject to PvP.
Further, PvP the last time I checked allowed the player to gain significant benefit from attacking other players due to in game reward that were not available to non-aligned characters at all, or required more effort to obtain than that of the PvP method.
I haven't been keeping track of the game though, and it is subject to sweeping changes in PvP systems as well, so this information may no longer be current.
Some final notes... The community for the game is in general much more immature than that in CoH. The developers focus more on the French community than English speaking communities. Though there are supposed to be servers where English is the official public channel language, this doesn't happen in practice, so language issues may cause difficulty in playing from time to time.
And another final note, hopefully the last I will think of... If you are only interested in games with polygonal graphics, there is no point in looking at Dofus. It is a flash MMORPG that appears sprite based with a French art style pretty close to anime. It will run on just about anything, but definitely lacks glitz, so it isn't for the looks focused player. -
Quote:Your characterization of a rather obvious point... that a cooperative focus tends to breed cooperation and that a contentious focus tends to breed contention... as being a trashing of PvP, in combination with your rather extreme reaction, suggests your perspective is rather skewed.Actually prior to I13 PvP worked exactly the same way PvE worked, and it was the time where the population was at its highest (PvP wise) and I didn't hear anyone once complain during that time period about a specifically nasty community. So no, you're wrong.
-
I think a large part of it is has to do with the game primarily being one of cooperation rather then competition. There is little in the way of PvP here, so most interactions with others for a large part of the player base is mutually beneficial teaming.
In many ways, helping others is helping yourself and everyone else, as over time players as a collective will become stronger. There is a lot of reward for being helpful, pleasant, and social in this game. There is little reward for being the opposite. -
Quote:The names of characters in a super hero game aren't special snowflake issues. They are in integral part of the character whole, just as they are an integral part of a comic book characters whole.Don't worry! Under the current system, you get to keep your special snowflake names and everything else for the rest of the game's life!
All three months of it!
Batman wouldn't be who he was or gained his popularity if he had the same costume and was called instead Jumping Jerry Jackrabbit. -
Quote:It's an easy way to alienate the community.Name conflicts are easy to take care of:
1. If a person has a conflicted name the person who had it first and is a paying VIP customer gets the name.
2. All the accounts that have not been paid for in the past three months names are up for grabs. No more names in constant limbo.
3. Hand out 200 rename tokens to all VIP accounts this will help assure a person to get a name that will work for them. I've made well over 500 characters in my years here and I've only had about 7 conflicted names.
Rich the Easy Guy
I, and I'm sure others, have no interest in having decent names potentially taken by some sort of arbitrary newly introduced policy that really won't save much money and will end out generating bad will.
If they come up with a way where names are no longer exclusive to the server but to the account, like CO, then server mergers wouldn't cause name problems and wouldn't upset as many community members. -
New Account Configuration
~ That sounds an alright addition, depending what the extras were.
In Game Ads
~ If they did this I'd drop the game immediately, unless it was limited to f2p players. The whole point of paying subscription fees is to not be exposed to in game annoyances such as advertising.
Reduce the Amount of Servers
~ How are you going to deal with name conflicts?
Pay For Content
~ They already had that. I paid for new content with my subscription fee. I paid for extra things with my monthly stipend of points. Non-subscribed players paid for things with Paragon Points purchased with cash.
DCUO content packs are free to subscribers. DCUO also gives a monthly stipend of points to spend in their market to subscribers, like CoX did. F2P paid for points to exchange for content like they do in CoX. Essentially, the economic models of the two were virtually identical. -
Quote:I'm curious as to why you didn't use the EndMod for Performance Shifter in the second 15 slot instead of the EndMod/Accuracy.Level 4: Stamina -- EndMod-I(A), P'Shift-End%(15), P'Shift-EndMod/Acc(15)
------------
Was it just a matter of convenience of having the IO or recipe for it already, and the difference would be minor so you just used what you had, or is there some benefit to the Accuracy portion I don't know about? -
Quote:She/he is not a generally accepted term in writing. It is an example of butchering the English language to accommodate politically correct dross.s/he. While not used in a actual speaking sense it is generally accepted neutral term in writing.
Also, the assumption, in English, of male gender in relation to a person when his or her gender is unknown, is not a quirk as was suggested earlier by another poster. It is a long existing standard.
Language relies on the use of standards, in both presentation and definition, to facilitate communication and understanding. Those standards include presenting writing of any length to be in paragraphs, so they can easily read and absorbed by the reader.
No amount of ranting and internet hostility from some random ill-mannered frenzied female forum poster is going to change these standards and the general expectation that they will be followed. -
Quote:I have and use the power as it is to great benefit on my Sonic/Devices. I quite like the fade affect which is very much a part of the look and feel of my character. Is this thread a joke ? , people are complaining about cool transparency .
Does cloacking device turn you into a blurry big black spot of ink ?
No it turns you into a transparent looking toon , if zoomed in you can still see the details .
And people complain about that ?
I give up some people should have played CoH original .
Where Cloak of Darkness , yes that was ruining your outfit .
By turning you into a big black spot of ink .
And getting it changed had half the forum people flaming me .
But cloaking device , heck no it is awesome , even for roleplay .
You take it turn it on in combat , turn it off after combat .
Done deal , but to cry you must take that power ?
That gives you as much defense even supressed as combat jumping , gives you almost as much stealth as invisible , and still able to act .
Is too worthless ? ... if it wasn't for cloaking device , you couldn't even place your time bomb up close .
However, I also understand that not everyone thinks fading is cool, and that the graphic effect won't fit with every character concept, and that some would rather role-play a character with stealth based on something other than transparency.
I wouldn't be adverse to a black blob of ink being added back in as an option either. Some may want to pair that look with Dark Blast, or simply think that "fading to black (or whatever colour)" is cool.
The more options the better, in my view. -
Quote:Yes, indeed, her request wasn't framed in the best way.I never said there shouldn't be one. Seriously, look through my posts in this thread, you will not find me arguing against a No Fade option anywhere in it.
My point was that the OP was being rather childish about the whole thing.
As StratoNexus said, if the OP had simply said "Now that this power will have the sustain effects added to it, can we get a No Fade option for it?" I wouldn't have had an issue with it, and in fact would have supported her position.
But that's not what she said.
I'm choosing to ignore the faults in her presentation and supporting the No Fade option despite them, because I think the benefits of the change related to character concept outweigh that which would be gained from me not supporting it due to the nature of her post. -
Quote:It is quite obvious why the OP would now feel obliged to take the new power when she didn't want the old one. There is nothing baffling about it. Why would anyone wish to have a character that is EXACTLY AS IT IS THIS VERY SECOND when they can instead have the sustain effects that will be added.Pretty much this.
The part that baffles me about this entire thread is that if the OP skipped Field Operative and the snipe in her original build, then the i24 changes will have absolutely zero effect on her character. In other words, her character will remain completely unchanged.
So, even though her character will remain EXACTLY AS IT IS THIS VERY SECOND.....these changes somehow RUINED her character?!?
Exactly how does a change that has no effect on something have the effect of ruining the something it didn't affect?
She didn't skip Field Operative. She skipped Cloaking Device. They aren't the same thing. What will diminish her character will be the potential she wouldn't have if she kept her powers as is when the old power is switched to the new one. It is quite obvious it would be lower than a similar character that opted to take Field Operative if her build remained unchanged.
As such, she will be affected, as will anyone else that used to avoid the old power, because it is unlikely any will turn down the sustain. She simply doesn't want the aesthetic that comes along with Field Operative, a power not so easily avoided as Cloaking Device without the loss of much potential.
In any case, what about a power named... Field Operative... suggests by virtue of it's name that it requires a fade effect. It inherently made sense to be required in a power called Cloaking Device. It doesn't with the name of the new power.
What is the argument against a No Fade option really... other than "tough, that's the way it is, suck it up, etc."... What would it hurt to have a No Fade option for a power that doesn't even imply invisibility in it's name for those that dislike the look of it? In what way would such a change negatively affect the game such that it should be avoided?
The argument for a No Fade option is easy enough. It allows more players to achieve their character concept, and precedent for No Fade options being added that facilitate character concept has been established.
What is the reasoned argument against providing a No Fade option? -
I don't believe those opposed to the fade are so because they want to admire their costumes in combat. I believe they are opposed to the fade because it violates their character concept to fade in combat.
-
To suggest that an appearance preference for one's super hero character is based on narcissism is ridiculous and dismissive. The look of comic book characters is very much a part of the identity of them. This naturally extends into a game based on playing such a character. If looks weren't important to many players they wouldn't have been so excited with the current power customization options and the upcoming ones.
Personally, I'm quite pleased with the fade of cloaking device and am happy it is being carried over into the new power. I based my Sonic/Devices around being virtually invisible graphically. However, I can see how many do not want to fade, and how such may well interfere with their desired look for their character or the concept it is based on.
Since the cost of avoiding the fade will now be much larger with the change many players will have to compromise their look or concept to take advantage of the new power. I see no reason why this should be so when many similar stealth powers in the game already offer a no fade option. To allow for variety in look and character concept a no fade option should exist for the new power. -
Like I said before, the fade of cloaking device could be changed when it's brought over to the new power. They could probably add a No Fade option to it in power customization with little work. With the name change, it would probably be a good idea anyway, as the power is now presented as training based as opposed to technology based. Then everyone could benefit from the power change, and both those who like the fade and don't would have a satisfying option.
Seeing as the power will be a lot harder to skip now the fade can't be as easily avoided by those that don't like the look of it. Since skipping the power now would probably be detrimental it would be nice to add the graphic choice so players can keep their desired character look and feel. It would be just one extra bit of power customization.
More choice can't hurt, eh? -
Having a Sonic/Devices blaster, I have always found Cloaking Device quite useful simply for the stealth it provides, which allows me to make better use of Sirens Song. I can see other primaries not finding as useful before.
However, with the upcoming change adding sustain to the power, I think it will be much better for the majority of /Devices users. The minimal amount of endurance required to run the power (if that cost remains) will be easily swamped out by the endurance it will provide.
I could see some players not liking the translucency forced on their character when using the power. Perhaps they could add a No Fade option for it in the editor like some other fading powers have. -
Quote:It's not a misconception. It is a difference of preference in language use. Many use Tank as a short form for Tanker. The context of a conversation usually makes it quite clear if those involved are referring to the AT and/or the role. You mean "Tankers" not "Tanks"...as Tank is a role that can be filled by other ATs...because my Brute is definitely a Tank.
Sorry...I just hate that misconception.
Your complaint falls in the category of pet peeve rather than error or misconception by those using a word in a manner you happen not to like. -
I have Teleport on one character and like it a fair bit. It gives me mobility that other travel powers don't match.
However, I think a few small changes can be made that would make many happier with the pool without forcing any change on anyone.
There are two changes that I think would be welcome to anyone, as they don't impact on the mechanics of the power at all:
- Decrease the endurance cost but maintain the range.
- Reduce the animation time slightly to make if feel more fluid.
- Allow players to toggle at Null whether they will or won't have the temporary hover effect after Teleport is executed.
- Allow players to toggle at Null whether they will or won't have the temporary speed reduction after Teleport is executed.
If they expand all the movement power pools to add yet another power to choose from at some point, which I think would be neat in general, they could add Combat Teleport to the teleport pool, perhaps as another optional first choice so one doesn't need to invest heavily in the pool if they only want to be able to teleport short distances in combat.
Combat Teleport could be a short range movement power that could be used for exotic and somewhat frequent repositioning in combat.
Possible numbers and features for the power are suggested below, subject of course to balancing:
- The same endurance cost (13.52) and range (60) as Spring Attack.
- The same cast time as Spring Attack, 1.5 seconds.
- A much shorter recharge time than Spring Attack, 12 seconds.
- No movement delay/speed reduction for the user on arrival.
- No hover effect for the user on arrival.
- No damage/knockdown like Spring Attack, just movement.
- Takes Recharge Reduction, Endurance Reduction, and Range IOs, and the same IO sets as Teleport.

Complaining that a gift you receive isn't of enough value is akin to a bum critiquing the spare change someone hands him for not being shiny enough.
It costs nothing but a moment's time to determine if it's something you want or don't. Expecting it to be something of extreme value when it is handed out on such a large scale isn't reasonable. Though it costs them little to produce and give such things, they still lose whatever revenue they could have gained by selling instead of gifting them.
Further, it is also unlikely it will be anything but consumables, so that the gift doesn't conflict with whatever enduring items account holders have purchased, which will of course vary between accounts.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Accept or decline it with grace. -
Quote:Whether you, or I, or another individual likes or dislikes the existing whip animations without particle effects is irrelevant as to whether there should or shouldn't be a whip power set, and has nothing to do with whether others will find these animations good enough for them.If you can look at the existing whip animations with particle effects turned off and say, "Yes. That looks great. I want more of that," then we are so dramatically distant in our aesthetic appraisals that I might as well be posting this from the surface of Europa.
Prospective purchasers will be able to check out the whip animations on the beta server and make their own decision as to whether or not they are up to snuff, from their point of view... all by themselves.
For those that do not wish to access the beta server, there will be the inevitable youtube videos of the animations for them to assess, which will still allow them to decide if they like it... all by themselves.
People don't need others to tell them what's good enough for them, and what they should or shouldn't want to be on offer. -
Quote:It doesn't matter that whips are not weapons in the real world. This game is not trying to simulate the real world. Whips are used as weapons by some characters in the comic books. CoH is trying to simulate a comic book world. Your real world arguments related to whips and their implementation have no relevance to CoH due to game genre. The difference is that whips are real and are not weapons. Why does that matter? Well, look at the existing whip animations. To me they look pretty stupid...
Your opinion regarding the aesthetics of the existing or potential whips and whip strikes is neither here nor there as to whether a whip set is desired or desirable to anyone other than yourself. Individuals can determine for themselves if the appearance and animation of the whips meet their standards.
I feel a dedicated whip set would be a nice addition to the game, and it is clearly desired by several players. I don't know, however, that enough players would want it so that it would be worth the effort to make. -
It turns out the issue was:
User=1d10t
It has been temporarily resolved.
Thanks though, for trying to help. -
The save button for my costume editor is suddenly greyed out, and I can no longer save costumes.
Does anyone know of this issue and if there is a way to solve it? -
Quote:Garbage in, garbage out. That sums up your whole experiment.tl;dr I used ninja run and shadow maul so this is now completely pointless and nothing interesting or potentially useful can be had from this thread for anyone. Got it. Move along.
If you want to present meaningful data about the base ability of two characters, you stick to the base abilities of the two characters and try to keep all other variables as equal as possible, without including abilities not available to all with access to those characters.
Interesting results, maybe... potentially useful, maybe... to those that don't care much about quality of your numbers. As interesting and as useful as if the experiment was conducted as properly as possible... absolutely not.
