Quote:I am the original poster. In order to get rid of my game crashes I reinstalled Windows and upgraded from 32bit to 64bit. I now have 4 gigs of usable memory instead of 3 gigs.Yes, 32-bit Window apps have a 2GB limit (ignoring the magical handwavey stuff you can do with server apps) so in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter if you have 4GB or 16GB of memory in your Windows 64-bit box, the game can only use 2GB max.
I am happy to report that the game no longer crashes. But there is still a memory leak - the 64 bit windows is just handling it better. My conclusion is still that COH needs to deal with memory better - or on the box it should say something like:
"MINIMUM 3 GB *FREE* RAM REQUIRED"
or
"WINDOWS 32 BIT NOT SUPPORTED"
Below is a screenshot of COH using 3gigs of ram on my 64 bit install after many hours of usage (something which is supposed to be impossible according to a previous post). Impossible or not - it should not be using this much.

..SOLVED...
This problem is related to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) real time protection.. time to switch back to AVG!

Hmm thanks, the problem was not happening 12 hours ago though (same map). All other graphics are uneffected (running around the city my FPS is 60+ like always). Something about the NPC's powers is causing it.
-
Ok this one is weird, and it wasn't happening to me last night. Nothing has changed on this pc.
Today when I run into an AE farm and agro 10+ things, as soon as the NPC start responding (casting spells) my frame rate plunges from 60 to 0. It gets slower and slower and eventually stops and stays frozen at 0 until I'm dead (and all the npc's have stopped doing stuff) then returns to 60+ FPS.
(notes: the problem is not related to heat, or anything weird running in the background on this computer. I have tried two different graphic drivers. I won't be posting COH helper logs etc etc - either you recognize this COH issue or you don't)
Anyone heard of this problem before? -
Quote:PROBLEM LOCATED (no solution other than changing an O/S setting)
Windows 7 offers a nice feature under...
Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display
I had this setting on "Larger 150%". Reducing it back to "Smaller 100%" returns my scaling for CoH to normal.
RETESTED -- It appears that ONLY the "Larger 150%" setting creates the problem. "MEDIUM 125%" does not result in the same issue. (and on both 125% and 100%, the in game resolution reported is 2560x1600 with 3D scaling also showing 2560x1600) So, for whatever reason, the largest setting throws something off with CoH resulting in the screen res getting whacked. Now, this is a WINDOWS 7 setting, not an Nvidia setting. This setting was DESIGNED for these ultra high res displays to keep users from having to use tiny text (again, this doesn't typically affect GAMES at all, and the 125% setting still does not affect CoH, so I'm not sure why 150% does).
This setting allows you to set scaling on the display which usually only affects text and dialog boxes and the like... it has not affected any other game and it is ANNOYING that I have to lose the ability to use this setting. (On this monitor, I like to use this feature so that text isn't teensy tiny; most newer programs work just fine with it, including every STEAM based game I own).
I hope a future update fixes this.
THANK YOU..... THANK YOU..... THANK YOU.....
I upgraded from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit this evening. After installing all my video drivers etc I loaded up COH had the same problem as described in your first post. I pulled my hair out for hours trying different video drivers etc until I found your post.
I confirm everything you said is correct. I also add to this thread that I was not having this problem on Windows 7 32 bit with the 150% setting - only in 64 bit. I have switched to 125% and now everything is fine. -
Quote:....you just nailed it....Originally Posted by FredrikSvanbergFrom personal experience I will usually crash after about 4 hours of normal gameplay. If I switch characters or zone a lot it will happen sooner. If I play trials or the new TFs it will almost invariably happen within an hour. I can sometimes do one trial without crashing, two in a row has happened maybe once and three in a row is unheard of. If I happen to have to go to a hospital during one of the trials time-to-next-crash seems to be cut in half (i.e. if I've been playing for 50 minutes and have to hosp it, a crash is now imminent - usually when zoning out of the hospital).
Thank you - this is EXACTLY what I experience, it's almost like a slow memory leak. No other game has this problem on my system. For me the crash usually comes within about an hour - but like you I notice how much you zone seems to affect it. Now I know I don't have to troubleshoot for a 1000 hours looking for a needle in a haystack.
The problem is that COH is unstable over time.

I have just returned to the game after being away a few years. I've decided to make a character for farming, something I never really did back in the old days.
I started with an invul/fire/energy tank, he's 50 now and doesnt get hurt at all standing in a room of 54s, which is awesome... love that.... But his DPS is too low... He does maybe 10 kills a minute.
So I started a fire/fire/energy brute. Never played a brute before. He's also 50 now and has almost full IOs. He easily does three times more damage then my tank, 30+ kills a minute. But... he is completely reliant on purple inspirations when farming 54s! He must have at least 4 purples up at all times or he looses health fast.
The questions: Someone said a brute has the same defense as scrappers, just more hp, is that true? is this normal for most brutes to require a bit of purple help on 54/8's or is it just me? Is there a middle ground between my tank and my brute? I want a farmer isn't dependant on purples and can still do decent DPS - any suggestions for my next character?
thanks! -
Quote:There is a full report there on my second post, in the code window which you find so difficult to handle.
You still aren't getting the full CoH Helper output into your posts. And please, don't use the code tags, just paste it into the post.
Quote:I'd recommend shutting down WinPatrol, your Remote Potato and Team Viewer, KMPlayer, Snackr, xchat and Messenger and possibly even the AVG ID Protection stuff.
I would definitely stop the Input Director services.
Anyone else have any theories as to why CoH would say it is out of memory when it is not? -
Quote:The multiple instances are normal behaviour for Chrome (and it was not running during my last crash). Chrome is not the cause of any problems.Just what did you have open in Chrome? Looks like you've got a whole lot of Chrome processes open. If you're running a ton of Flash-heavy sites (eg, games), they can suck quite a bit of memory themselves.
Besides - I'm starting to think the problem is not even related to memory. As stated in my previous post - the crashes happen even when there is free ram / swap space. -
I've tested a bit further and this is happening when there is plenty of free ram and swap space. Also note I increased my swap file to 4 gigs.
This is what windows was reporting at the -exact- time of my last crash:
Physical Memory (MB)
Total 2934
Cached 371
Available 372
Free 2
Commit 4565/7133
So as you can see there is free physical ram and swap space available... Why is COH crashing?

After running the game for an hour or two it eventually crashes with this error:
Code:Here is the cohhelper output: http://pastebin.com/5FBSrtTd./piggs/fonts.pigg: Failed memory allocation Read failed for file: fonts/msgothic.ttc -1 The game ran out of memory and must now exit.
The game has plenty of free ram to work with (about 2 gigs). I realize I'm on 32bit and should really be using 64bit... but the game shouldnt be crashing on me, my laptop has the same 3gigs of ram and it doesn't crash there.
Any suggestions on how to make CoH stop crashing? -
CoH crashes on me when in Win7 (32bit) with 3gigs of ram (plus 1gig on the gpu). Basically there are no other apps running and CoH is running out of ram. It usually happens after 60 minutes+ of playing (almost like a memory leak).
I realize I should be on 64bit w/ 4gigs etc etc.... But:
I'm thinking it could handle this situation a little better... Does COH really need to crash itself? Is it just me having this problem? Are there any options I can pick to make it play nice? -
I've been away for a few years, two questions:
(1) do the same rules on diminishing returns apply? (3 enhancement of the same type is most efficient, a 4th one does very little)
(2) what about if you have (for example) 3 damage SO's, then you add a damage IO... do dimishing returns apply to that IO?

The picture above shows the Netgraph for me connected to Triumph server (low population) at 4am ET on a weekday. Graphic settings were on low, 60+ FPS. Also I was pinging google repeatedly, 0 packets were lost. I notice this behaviour on Freedom server too, I haven't tested others yet.
Where I have circled in red is EXACTLY the times when I am rubberbanding. Can anyone explain what is going on in the netgraph? Why am I rubberbanding? Can I troubleshoot this further?
Any rubberbanding tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -
I just started back up in this game after being away a few years, I chose to start on a new server (Freedom) because I wanted more groups and my other server seemed really dead.
It was okay at first, but the past week or so the rubberbanding has really been driving me nuts. I find that even during the off-hours (ie: 4am-7am ET on a weekday) when my "Netgraph" is all green I am still rubberbanding.
A few questions:
(1) is it just me?
(2) are there any graphic settings that can cause rubberbanding? my fps is ~60 so I doubt this, but I have to ask.
(3) are the servers located in different places? ie: Which is east coast?
(4) do I get any free server transfers? note this account is 7 years old
Any input would be welcomed.

I run CoH on a triple monitor dual video card system (non-sli)... CoH hates this...
Usually when I start the game it runs extremely poor, it does about 1-2 frames per second. But sometimes if I reboot, restart the game, or change graphic settings it fixes it and the game runs properly at the 60 FPS my system is capable of. It seems pretty random so far, I can't put my finger on what causes it to run properly or poorly. When I start the game there is a 50/50 chance of either. btw - I play in windowed mode, and I am on the most recent nvidia drivers.
I have about 25+ other 3D games on this computer and none of them have any problems with my system. I realize my details are pretty vague but I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with CoH + dual monitors (and/or dual video cards) and if theyve had any success at making it behave properly.... ?
Thanks in advance.
