Rubberbanding: Discuss
Better place for this is the Technical section of the forums.
But... try changing your DNS servers. A lot of times the default you're using can choose to go to an MMO server by a very strange route.
I'm not sure what's going on. I don't get rubberbanding much, but when I do it's epic and crazy. My real curiosity is why there are now often five instances of Atlas Park, multiple instances of SC, etc.
Though last night I did have some massive, strange, time-travel rubber banding on the ITF.
I've never been killed on a rubberband or mapserve...is there something in the code preventing that?
1,2. Probably not.
3. I thought Texas.
4. Nope.

First, welcome back. I sorta agree with Laser that the Tech Issues forum is more appropriate, but you're more likely to get applicable responses here. Answering in sequence, and adding own comments at the bottom.
I just started back up in this game after being away a few years, I chose to start on a new server (Freedom) because I wanted more groups and my other server seemed really dead.
It was okay at first, but the past week or so the rubberbanding has really been driving me nuts. I find that even during the off-hours (ie: 4am-7am ET on a weekday) when my "Netgraph" is all green I am still rubberbanding. A few questions: (1) is it just me? (2) are there any graphic settings that can cause rubberbanding? my fps is ~60 so I doubt this, but I have to ask. (3) are the servers located in different places? ie: Which is east coast? (4) do I get any free server transfers? note this account is 7 years old |
1. I really don't have rubberbanding issues unless there's degraded connectivity between me and the server in general; OR, if the server itself is having specific access issues. That sort of instability is abrupt and short-term, as all users would encounter problems on a certain zone, for instance, and gets addressed immediately.
2. Rubberbanding is primarily a symptom of packet quality issues. If you believe this might be an issue, try running the game in safe mode and see if it improves your rubberbanding.
3. The US servers were all relocated to Texas some time ago. Consequently, the whole east/west coast plan for improving connectivity is out the window now as you're all going to the same hosted location. Fun Fact: Since we merged the US/EU server lists, I've noticed about 50ms ping improvement of Union/Defiant over Freedom (I'm based in DC). I'm planning on migrating some of my toons to Union for this reason.
4. No free server transfers unless they specifically announce a "free transfer" period. Transfers were just on sale for 50% off until a few days ago, and they're a "buy and use immediately" format, so no "buying and parking until later" like one of the rednames erroneously suggested last week.
Suggestions for you:
a. Try safe mode and see if your rubberbanding improves. If so, it could well be your own system that's hampering you because of severe overhead for graphics, sound, etc. I doubt it, but hey, anything's possible.
b. Like Laser suggested, you can try assigning your DNS to a different server (Google offers access to one for free, as do a number of other sources) to see if your routing to the game environment improves.
c. Lastly, I'd just open a trouble ticket via /petition and ask for technical assistance. They'll email you a diagnostic tool that will log basic info on your machine and network connection for them to use in their analysis. It may take a few days, but their process on this is fairly thorough, and will help them narrow down a common issue if other users from certain ISPs or trunk paths are having the same issue.

Leftover's from the Praetorian Invasion on Friday night. People crashed/logged out in those instances, and when they log back on, it seems to be reopening the instances. I've seen the same ones come and go all week. They *should* be gone now that the Thursday maintenance has been done. But I might be wrong.
