Quote:I'm sorry, I guess I did not quite understand you..... But I don't quite understand what 'synergy' means in this context.... because a sword and shield would seem to be a logical pairing, right? Or do you mean as far as a results oriented build is concerned?I am not sure you understood me right. What I said is that DM/SD actually has synergy, while BS/SD does not, once you're IO'd out. Also, BS/WP has a far better synergy than BS/SD.
Your question was whether BS/SD compares to DM/SD and while BS/SD certainly is fun it does not compare since there is no great synergy like there is in DM/SD. I added the part about BS/WP because you discarded it as lacking in favor of a BS/SD.
And yes, I do have a DM/SD, as well as a Kat/WP.
And yes, I confess that I have sort of poo-poo'd my Broadsword/Willpower. That's why I made the post; I felt that if someone really did have a great experience with a Broadsword/Willpower, then they would certainly let me know about it.
Although we look at the entirety of the leveling career of a Scrapper, I admit I am more concerned with life after 40. This is where I enjoy a toon the most. Sorry that I wasn't more specific.
More to the point, I agree DM/Shield just mesh super well together because they cover each other well, and damage is 'good' with DM, but add Shield and it is through the roof good.
So I was farting away with my Broadsword/WP thinking... am I making another lemon? I am sorry but I honestly do feel my claws/WP is.... well bad. I've posted his build in another thread.
Thanks again. -
Quote:Well I admit that my broadsword/wp is not 50. But my Claws/WP is 42, and my Dual Blades/WP is 50+.
A BS/WP which you seem to think is lacking, has a far better synergy.
I can tell you that those two toons pale in comparison to my DM/Shield.
So far I have my Broadsword/WP up to.... 24 only. So my thinking was to ask people who have actually played a DM/Shield up to 50, or near it, so I can get real feedback from people who know what I mean when I say stuff like, 'my DM/Shield is a wrecking ball'.
Initially I thought the holes in Shield would best be 'covered up' by WP. WP is a good set, but where it makes up for Shield's issues, it does not have near the damage.
So I thought I'd just see what Broadsword/WP or Broadsword/Shield players thought of that? I appreciate any feedback though, so thank you. -
Hey guys,
Just making a new thread for this thought.... I am realizing in my Claw/WP thread that there may be nothing really wrong with my Claws/WP build...at least not 'terribly' wrong.
The problem, if you want to call it that, is the Dark Melee/Shield scrapper is just, IMHO, vastly superior. Once he gets real recharge, he makes up the difference in defence, with a great heal power that is also a great attack.
With Soul Drain combined with Against All Odds, his attacks are staggeringly strong..... the AoE, once recharge is pumped up, is actually respectable. Soul Drain, Shield Charge, and the other power... forgot the name (Energy drain one...) All of these contribute, and I'm a strong believer in the punching cone that no one takes. (I can usually hit 2-3 people at once.)
So I came to thinking, what could possibly be better? Or am I spoiled rotten by this character?
Then I realized that I do have a Broadsword/WP guy that is just sort of lacking.... we all know Broadsword has punch, but what if you paired it with shield?
I'm wondering if anyone has both a DM/Shield, and a BS/Shield and can do a comparison... does the DM still win on account of the Soul Drain combo?
Just curious..... -
Quote:Well, my purpled out Claws/SR was getting 12 min pylon times vs. 5 mins for my unoptimzed DM/Shield, so that tells you something.
Now granted I'm not yet at the recharge to run FU-Focus-Evis or FU-Focus-Slash chains, but I'm running FU-Focus-Slash-Strike with the -RES in Slash, hecas in FU (inc. proc), Apocs in Focus (inc. proc), and ToDs in Strike (inc. proc).
Also the DDR in Shields definitely helps, even compared to soft-capping WP to E/N and/or S/L.
There you go. This is the crux of my issue. I haven't even finished slotting my DM/Shield and he is a total wrecking ball compared to my Claws/WP.
So I am starting to think the guys who are loving the claws/wp may very possibly not have a DM/Shield to compare to.... I'm just putting that out there. ;D -
Titan, that is very interesting. Thanks for posting the build.
But one thing I notice... is it has incredibly slow recharge. Does that not bother you?
Out of curiousity, what Alpha Slotting are you going with? Damage? (I note your high end usage as well.)
Also, do you fly with this guy when you fight? I would think if I was going to change one thing it might be to just eliminate Hover. What was your thinking on this?
I am very curious about this build. I mean it really didn't occur to me that it would be effective to concentrate on a few 'type' defenses over smashing/lethal. Typically on the forum you hear over and over that -nearly- every attack has some form of s/l in it so it's just easiest to plan for.
Thanks again. -
Quote:What? Really? I monitor my damage all the time and defiance IS a factor until I'm either A) on my back dirt nappin', or B ) killed the mob.I've done that. Rarely more than 35%, and even then for only a few seconds at at a time before it goes back down to 10-20% for the next while (if not to 0% because I'm busy trying to find a suitable target rather than just the nearest minion). Defiance's damage boost isn't reliable and isn't really much of a factor, especially in groups, except maybe in the longest fights (ie, EBs, AVs. and GMs).
Plus what about the other work arounds for damage... Do you have Aim? Build Up? How about inspirations.... you'll never find a recharge inspiration.
I guess if you've tried monitoring your damage, and you really think Defiance isn't reliable, and isn't 'much of a factor' (which is almost a ridiculous statement IMHO) then you are probably best off with Musculature.
For Pilgrim, I just wanted him to try my recommendation, and even gulp some inspirations while he's at it to kind of have 'pretend musculature'.... just to see if it really is what he thinks it's going to be. Personally I wish I could 'trade' my Musculature Alpha to my controller or something. -
Bingo. This is why I personally can't take Musculature. I've had both slotted and if you watch how even just defiance works (with or without buildup) that's all you need to see to know that the extra little 'uumph' that musculature gives you is going to be lost in the bonuses we all inherently have.
Conversely, having my nuke up more often? Yes, please.
Plus there are other non-number crunching factors that should be considered. In my mind I find it a VERY strong argument that we can in theory mimic what most of these Alpha powers do with -inspirations- .... EXCEPT Spirtual's recharge. -
I don't know if I'm a glutton for punishment, or just stupid, but I pulled an old buddy out of the closet; my Claws Willpower scrapper.
I find my Dark Melee/Shield scrapper to be... omnipotent feeling at times. But I was thinking which scrapper do I have that would REALLY benefit from this fancy Alpha/Incarnate thingy?
My conclusion was my Claws/Willpower guy. (I do have a 50 Dual Blade/Willpower guy, but I tire of the 'combo' them.)
My thinking was that the Claws guy naturally recycles powers fast, and he has good accuracy. So I thought THIS would be the one toon I have that could benefit from Musculature Alpha. Do you agree? Or think there is a better Alpha?
Ok, so enough chit chat.... I find my build might be borking me. I love the attacks, and I normally cycle them to take advantage of the secondary strengths of the set, but maybe I'm doing it wrong?
All I know is this character (who is now 40) feels VERY sub-par compared to my DM/Shield scrapper. A friend recently told me I would suffer from the success of my DM/Shield and probably NEVER be happy with another damage type toon. I don't want to believe this.....
So I ask you, the number crunching forumites to check this out. Please. What am I doing wrong? (And please comment on Alpha choices).

I just went up a couple more levels last night, though I do admit finding a team can be a bit of a task, but anytime I do things typically go really well.
So far I'm really enjoying this tank. It's kind of 'different' from other tanks I've played in where he's got a bit of everything going on, end drain, heal, aoe, single target, etc.
I've been growing to love power sink. That's a really fun power, especially if you have another 'lightning' powered character in the group.
So far he's leveling pretty slow, and solo missions are a little painful (slow-wise) but if I stick this guy out to 45, I think he'll really shine. (so far just 36).
I seem to be ok with the build I listed, but I am still really head scratching over the Incarnate ability to go with.... I still am leaning to Cardiac for near capped restists, but Spiritual is very much a consideration. -
Sorry you lost me....
I mean to say I was giving a more specific answer relating to dual pistols in my own thread because I didn't want to muddy up this one... which I'm probably doing right now... so I've defeated my own purpose. -
Quote:But before you make that decision Mr.Pilgrim, just do me one favour.... (if you haven't already). With the assistance of Defiance, watch your damage meter ramp up.... as your attacks start stacking, watch how much 'bonus' damage you can do on your own.Looking at the Very Rare boost level for Musculature in Mid's, I beg to differ. My En/En Blaster is not going to be nice to the mobs with that buff going. We're talking about 100 more damage from Nova, 80 more from Total Focus, and 40 from Power Burst. That adds up, and I will take it.
Spiritual is going to be great for my Dual Pistols Blaster, though. He has Aid Self, and as you noted in your later post, the alpha slot can help his healing and recharge, so it helps him to recover and do damage more often with his best powers. I may or may not go to the very rare level with him, though, as the recharge bonus isn't that noticeable (two seconds faster for Build up and HoB).
Now to mimic the Musculature alpha, pop a damage inspiration (the size and amount to mimic the Alpha is dependent on the Alpha you are considering... I'm sure you can figure that part out).
Now watch your orange numbers fly.... is this worth it to you?
I actually had Musculature slotted on my DP. Granted it was not Rare, BUT even the uncommon recharge/heal of Spiritual did seem to make a difference. Like I said earlier, it's the one Alpha you can't replace with an inspiration.
I'm not trying to convince you. I just want you to make the best decision for your character.
I do agree different characters will have different needs.... and my DP benefits immensely from cycling HoB about every 30 seconds. It's probably the number one benefit to my build. (There are others, but HoB cycle is probably number one. ) -
Okay so here's my latest findings swapping BUILDS and ALPHA slots.
HoB is my lifeline. It gives me 10% boost to def for just a touch longer than the animation. If I can start off on every mob with that? I'm rockin'.
I just respecc'd and although I did not go red side for Scorp shield, (this ultimately means I am below the cap for def) I do have very respectable resists for S/L with Tough and Invuln.
Now that I have Alpha Slotted Spiritual, I wish I had kept my Medicine Pool because now the heal would be up even faster, hitting me for 450 hit points every few seconds. With an interrupt reducer in there, I have to confess I never feel the need for maxed out defense, and actually prefer resists when you have a heal.
Why? Well even with pumped defense, you end up getting debuffed, or a mob gets an alpha off on you that is just stupidly lucky. Now you're looking at taking nearly full damage.
When I had my previous build rocking, I still benefited from HoB, and moderate defense, but lucky Alpha's almost never killed me.
I almost always had enough resist to stay alive, hop back, hit my medicine heal, and get right back in the fight.
To add to this thought, the Spiritual would add to the heal properties.
My current build does not NEED Spiritual to work, but IMHO Musculature is a non factor, even as a final alpha slot. Just my opinion of course, but after playing both, I now believe I would have been better off with the heal, modest defense, and modest resist, along with Spiritual. -
Yea... I'm seeing from your edit you realize it sounds like you're disagreeing with me. lol
But you're preaching to the choir. ;P
I'm going to post in Dual Pistol thread on this just because I don't want to muddy this thread with discussion specific to DP when it's about Alpha slotting in a more generic discussion. -
I do appreciate your build.
Here is the problem I have with Shield tanks....
I just compared your tank to my DM/Shield Scrapper who is 50. Without considering Incarnate stuff, I have nearly perma hasten on my character which means he has a heal up about every 3-5 seconds.
I also have higher positional defense than you. For shield Defense is really the meat of it, right? So if a scrapper has higher defense than you, what are we looking at?
About 1000+ hitpoints. That's it. But my scrapper is an absolute damage machine. My Shield Charge hits VERY hard, and I can fire off my alpha chain fast, and again it hits HARD.
Just this is what my consideration is... and ultimately why I left my Shield/SS tank at 25. -
Yup. Dual Pistols/EM.
Basically I look at the damage monitor while I play.... there is no way I'm taking Musculature on a blaster. YMMV but I'm definitely going Spiritual Core. -
Quote:LMAO. What a fool! I knew I was doing something to bake the numbers like that. You have OWTS turned on. That's the major discrepancy in resistances.
Quote:
You're DDR should be good for the most part, you won't have perma double stacked AD - but as long as you keep hasten running your gap in coverage will only be a few seconds, this is usually the most dangerous when you start a mission.
Otherwise you're at 59% DDR, and around 83% when double stacked.
You can either look for a third slot for AD for another HO, or you can just carry a few small purples with you "just in case". -
Quote:Whoa... sorry to post again so soon, but I may have mistaken on my previous comment on this build tweak.Elektro have you considered buying a GA proc using hero merits? Small quick changes made. Nothing cereal
http://www.cohplanner.com/mids/downl...D3E03F0ECED251
Now I've re-read the numbers 3 times, and unless I'm losing my mind (Highly possible), then your tweak has me losing a bit of defense, and a LOT of resistance. I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure I'd want to go that direction if I'm reading everything correctly.
Maybe I posted the incorrect build? This is the one I'm currently trying to better, if possible:

Thanks those are both great suggestions. I just wasn't sure of the range to take a roll in.
Too bad we can't get a Glad +3 out of it. -
Quote:Elektro have you considered buying a GA proc using hero merits? Small quick changes made. Nothing cereal
http://www.cohplanner.com/mids/downl...D3E03F0ECED251
Ok, I"m at a loss how you pumped up the S/L resistance so high? I think you found nearly 20%?
Now on the GA Proc question, I did note in my post above that I was saving "Slot 50" on Tough for the 'possibility' of getting one of those... but with the build you suggest, where would it go?
Just to be clear, is the GA Proc the one that takes something like 35 A merits? Because... I doubt I will ever own one if that is the way to do it.
But yea, I don't know where I would put it in this build, and also, even though I'm not sure how you found that S/L resist, the build looks good.. if not a tad scary in the Endurance usage though. -
Ok this might be it.
I explored my larger issues in my own thread, and now I think I have this scrapper done.
Here's the bottom line..... or my so called issues with the build:
- In extreme cases, I get defense debuffed, and I am deader than crap. I have 59.4% resist to debuff defense. Can I increase that without borking the build? Is it worth it?
- Short of Glad, or Shield Wall, I can't get anymore positional Def out of this build. OR... CAN I? The balance is keeping GOOD recharge. I see -some-builds with more DEF but no recharge. And while on the topic of defense... is it even worth trying to get more?
- You will notice a 'blank' slot at level 50 in Tough. This is in case I win 400 consecutive Costume Contests in Atlas Park and buy a +3 Def Gladiator Enh.
- The build dropped Musculature Alpha, and is now using Spiritual Alpha to get CLOSE to perma hasten, for heal/shield charge/Soul Drain which are my favorite powers in the set. (Musculature just seems a waste for this power set, but Nerve for DEF would be sassy, but perhaps unnecessary?)
- One last thing...I disabled the Accolades. I had been making builds on other people's posts I suppose and noted I was sabotaging my efforts and realized some people post with a lot of accolades turned on!
Any tweaks I can do to this monster?

Can someone tell me what the best item to try to acquire with AE tickets would be? I'm thinking recipes....
I searched the forum and really couldn't come up with anything, but I have a decent amount of left over tickets, from before the AE nerf, and I'd like to try an get something like a Steadfast 3% or something of that nature.
It's been a long time since I tried but if I recall doing certain rolls gave better chances of success for recipes like that.
Anyone have a suggestion? -
Quote:I would personally suggest going for spiritual instead of cardiac. Cardiac by itself won't get you to 90% S/L resistance. One orange insp will get you to the hardcap without cardiac, assuming heavy resistance slotting on Charged Armor and Tough.
Spiritual gives you a faster recharging Energize, Power Sink, and Lightning Rod. You also get more healing and regen out of Energize.
Hmm... alright that's a valid point. The problem I'm seeing with the Alpha system is Spiritual is by far the most popular alpha. Each of my 50's started with something else in mind, now they are all Spiritual.
It looks like this guy might be as well... But I agree it is a big help to get more recharge going....
Quote:Not only do you not get the Notice of the Well but you are flagged as getting the one time reward of it for that stirke target. So if you do a strike target non-alpha and then unlock the Alpha slot you won't be able to get it that Strike target week. -
Yea, I think it will be fine.
I have played around with the incarnate cardio alpha and it works really well with this build.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Again though I'm still wondering if anyone knows if you do a strike task force, and you are not incarnate yet, do you get Essence of the Well? Or do you have to be incarnate? -
That's cool....
I thought we had a good thing going the other night. I was on with my Dual Pistols, and we had no tank... just a brute and mostly blasters.
Somehow we did it faster than my other team with 3 tanks! It was weird, because the tanking from the brute was.... a little hairy, but the team damage on the towers (blasters) was huge. -
Thanks guys.
With some of the minor tweaks suggested, it is near the Smashing/Lethal def softcap. I could get it to cap, but my secondary goal was adding some Hit points.
I did entertain my shield tank last night but it didn't go well... he simply seems to pale in comparison to my elec/elec. That's fine....
I don't know about the extra slots used on 'knockback' protection but.... I suppose it's ok. I also dumped lightning clap because of the knockback in it.
