I nominate Xanatos.
Failing that; I suggest the dev team narrow it down to 10 candidates and let people vote.
...for me. -
Prior to the DA Revamp I would have agreed with SlickRiptide and Samuel_Tow. While the The Well of the Furies is a horrendously crap story idea and should just be retconned out of existance and the praetorians are overexposed and shoe-horned into far too much content; the majority of the new DA content is absolutely amazing. Mainly because it draws from a lot of old plot points and weaves in a whole bunch of different characters into the overall narrative of the zone. It really draws from the lore in an absolutely fantastic way. It's epic without being overbearing. Good job!
I, much like Jack Emmert, am a massive fan of Kurt Busiek's Astro City. It's the best comic ever made bar none. And it's obvious to see the inspiration City of Heroes takes from it. One of Astro City's big plotlines was something called "The Dark Age". In it, the city's primary hero gets killed, the world is getting darker and darker, and an evil being from another dimension breaks into our reality and starts causing chaos. I absolutely loved reading this in Astro city. So now that something VERY similar is happening in Paragon...gotta say I'm loving that too.
But yeah the Well of the Furies is so convoluted/ridiculous at the moment I pretty much just ignore it entirely. -

Virtue loses another one. Rest in peace hero.

Assuming it's LR is still broken: Corruptor.
If it's been fixed then go with Defender. -
Apparently "Well of the Furies" is just a nickname given to the combined force of humanity's potential. It's basically a god emergent from our collective consciousness. It's kinda like Ion or Parallax from Green Lantern, but tethered to a species rather than an emotion.
I don't mind this. Feels like generic DC Comics nonsense. An improvement for sure.
The problem I had with the "Well of the Furies" was that it used to be written as the source of all our powers. (Aka metagaming our backstories.) Turns out, our powers create it, not the other way around. I can dig that.
...assuming I've not completely misinterpreted Golden Girl's quote. -

Quote:Ah you appear to be one of those people who doesn't engage in debate. (You disagree, but you do not counter.) Nevermind.Walking into a trap you know exists because you're confident the trap is one you can handle isn't arrogance.
Also, there's no signs of detachments. SSA4 clearly stated he's upset. But he's not allowing his anger or sadness to blind his sense of princples. Hence, no detachment. -

Quote:Statesman had an off day. Darrin Wade had an on day. They were, coincidentally, the same day.So much fail and so little time....
A man with no real powers went out and killed the daughter of the most powerful hero in the world. Statesman would have to actively try not to turn Wade into a red smear on the ground in a confrontation. It does not take the strategic acumen of Sun-Tzu to see that Wade has a trick up his sleeve and is OBVIOUSLY trying to provoke a response. Actually giving him that response is USDA certified Prime Grade-A stupid. If we were talking about an "ordinary" hero I might let this pass as "reasonable stupidity" if it was the only fly in the ointment (it isn't), but not from Statesman. The guy was a soldier and international criminal mastermind for about 20 years before starting his 80-year tenure as a superhero. If he was actually this dumb he'd have died a long time ago.
Statesman is arrogant. Justifiably so: how many of us took Darrin Wade seriously prior to the SSAs? Statesman will no doubt have fought many people similar to Darrin Wade before. (Low tier nobodies trying to make a name for themselves.) He will have walked into many traps like this before and come out unscathed. There will be a precedent for his behaviour. The reason for this? Low-tier guys like Darrin Wade are low tier because they're not very good at what they do. So why take them seriously?
Statesman is detached from reality. He thinks he's the only hero that can save everyone. He's not quite the same man he was as an "international criminal mastermind". To think that turning from a normal human being to the most powerful super-powered being on the planet wouldn't change someone on a very fundamental level is just ignorant. He will obviously become significantly more complacent.
So 80 years of complacent behaviour, in addition to arrogance at lesser powered threats, and what you are left with is a statistically inevitability that Statesman would die sooner or later to a D-lister that got lucky. Add in emotional distress (dead daughter) to remove rational thought and promote aggression, and you can understand how Darrin Wade really was able to take out Statesman. -
What side do you pick more than others? Heroes.

I'm still trying to figure out why Forbin_Project and Tyger42 are still posting in this thread...

Quote:I like this. Wish I'd done it IC, but I tend to do all new content OOC the first time through so I can check it outIf you're an RPer and have the opportunity to do this IC, take it. It will be all the more epic. After a bit of fruitless attempts at revival, and shouting and yelling at the sky (just a little bit--we weren't that bad), and swearing murderous revenge, the eight of us came to our senses and committed to filling Statesman's shoes and upholding his principles. Years ago my namesake Captain-Electric was sort of "cursed" with a permanent sense of optimism after his science accident, so he doesn't often experience misery, but even he was grief stricken. One member of the team planted his shield in the ground where Statesman had fallen and laser-engraved a "last stand" message on it. Then Captain-Electric used his powers to solder it permanently to the earth and stone.
Then I took off my cape and draped it over the shield. Yes, I was prepared! Ha!
Some people hated it. I'm not speaking for them. I'm speaking for me, and what I observed in my SG's reactions. We were moved by it. Some members even became teary eyed! I don't know about epic, but I don't believe "epic" was the intention (that's for later ), but it was pretty damn moving. (DISCLAIMER: IN MY OPINION!) -
I was surprisingly touched by this. Especially the scene with Recluse. The rest of the arc wasn't especially strong, but the end-game cutscene/flashback was very well written. Thank you for giving Statesman such a wonderful send-off. He's been such a big part to the story of this game, both pre and post beta. It's a powerful statement to make: it's no longer his story. It's no longer City of Sidekicks. We're the heroes now.
Other good stuff: Player character was upsold throughout in all the dialogue. No over-emphasis on Positron or any of the NPCs. Fantastic new maps. No praetoria / well of the furies. Nice one!
I hope this lasts. It feels good to be able to say nice things about the CoH story direction. (CoH's biggest strength has always been its lore IMO.) -
Loving all the Pseudo-devs in this thread.
Good suggestion Foxy. -
Quote:Yeah classic tight options are definitely #1 for most people. In a way, possible improvements already exist in game:The way I'm envisioning the modern/movie look would be pretty different from the Defense/Olympian guard stuff--definitely distinctive enough to merit a new set. It'd also be fairly plain for maximum customization. A subdivided version would be somewhat less plain, but still versatile.
I'm seeing some interest in such a set, but overall, my read is that it appears to be a lower priority than "old school" tights.
Male -> Chest -> Tanker
Vs.
Male -> Chest -> Tights -> Tank (pattern)
The pattern is just painted on, whereas the actual tanker top has a lined edge. Allow the option to have the Tanker top connect with spandex/metal/etc arms.
Male -> Bottoms -> Bare
Vs.
Male -> Bottoms -> Tights -> Brief
The pattern is just painted on, whereas the actual bare bottom has a lined edge. Allow the option to have the bare bottom connect with spandex/metal/etc legs.
Thanks for listening. -
tl;dr version - Copy Astro City. Don't remove anything that's already in the game.
Quote:One thing you've got to realise is that the people that are asking for "more superhero stuff" want the options presented to them to be as plain as possible. They want a canvas that lets them mix/match lots of things onto it. The Circle of Thorns skintight patterns are an example of what the superhero crowd DON'T WANT. While they're fantastically designed...there's only so many things you can mix and match them with. They are far too busy for the people who are asking for "more superhero stuff".A) revamped old school/spandex tights similar to the ones we already have (adding a few details like seams but still mostly plain)
Now if you offered skin-tight cotton (Watchmen), chainmail (Captain America) or Scales (Aquaman). You would be providing something detailed, but that was plain enough to be utilised with multiple different styles. Furthermore, if you were able to offer a bottom that allowed briefs/legs to have two contrasting styles. (Cottom/chainmail, cotton/scales, chainmail/cotton, etc) that would go even further to add to the plain costume settings.
Astro City's Silver Agent is a REALLY good example of what I'm talking about here:
Alex Ross designed this guy to be the EPITOME of the superhero in the Astro City series he did with the legendary Kurt Busiek. So it stands to reason that he'd be an ideal candidate to look at. Let's see:
-Matt Leather Boots
-Chainmail Briefs on Spandex Pants
-Chainmail Torso/arms/mask.
-Shiney metal chest detail/helmet/bracers
All of those things working in unison to create the perfect looking hero. (None of them currently in game.) The ultimate minuteman. Perhaps the only problem is the black straps, but they're for a gun holster so we'll forgive them.
Now I'm not saying let us make the silver agent in game. What I'm saying is give us the options to create characters similar to him. There is already a texture in game for legs called "bare" i think. (For men.) It's basically just a pair of underpants. Change the skin texture on that piece to spandex and you are going in the right direction. Change the skin texture to an option of ~10 different textures, and the brief itself to ~10 different option, all the while ensuring that the textures are plain to allow for ultimate utility? Boom. You will have nailed it.
Quote:[I]B) loose-fitting tights with folds (like you'd see in Golden/Silver Age comics)
Quote:C) modern super-hero tights (w/ ribbing, surface texture(s), subdivided surfaces) a la Ultimates 1 or Marvel movies.
Some say that the Defense and Olympian Guard base textures cover this style fairly well. Do you agree?
Quote:Feel free to bring up related basic accessories (like masks, etc.)
