And before the collective weight of the forums jump on my back for "derailing," this is relevant to the topic of recolourable Incarnate powers. One of the major limitations, as we have been told, is that the power customization US doesn't support Pool and Epic powers, and only supports powers we are GUARANTEED to have access to, those being all our primaries and all our secondaries. If this, and whatever other complications have been solved for the Incarnate system, does it not make sense to ask for the natural extension of that?
Two things have to happen for Power Pool Customization:

    1. The tailor interface needs recoding to support it.

    2. All the animations of the Power Pool Powers need to be rebuilt from scratch. BAB told us what he had to go through to 'convert' the old animations to colorable versions. Something which he did mostly on his own every time the development cycle didn't have him working on something else. And it was time consuming. It was done over 18 months if I recall.

With the customizable Incarnate 'Pools', it looks like number 1 is completed. Number 2 is going to require a lot of animator-hours still. And it will have to be prioritized for them to spend time on it... something which I don't think our Devs feel is as important as I or you do.

What allows the new powers to be customizable is that they're being created from scratch to be tintable. They're not creating untintable legacy versions and then converting them. They're simply creating new tintable ones from scratch.

Sometimes it's a lot easier to build a new house than to fully renovate an old one.

  3. From a related thread....

Pro Tip: New and Quick Start-up Desktop Icons

    1. After your clients (Live, Test, and Beta) are set up, open the NCSoft Launcher. Click on File (top drop down menu) > In General Tab, click on "After launching game:" drop down > chose "Exit Launcher" > OK.

    2. Right click on a client (e.g. CITY OF HEROES TEST) > on the pop up menu, chose "Create Desktop Shortcut"

    3. Close the NCSoft Launcher. Find new Desktop Shortcut and double click it. The NCSoft Launcher will open briefly, start the client, then exit. From here on out, all you need is that one double-click to start the game.

Pro Tip: Customizing Start-up Desktop Icons and Skins

If you use several clients (Live, Test, and Beta), you may want to customize the Desktop Shortcuts and the start-up 'skin' so you get visual cues as to which client you're starting and which server you're entering. I use all three servers and clients. I gave the Live client the Hero icon and skin, the Test client the Villain icon and skin, and the Beta client the GR Gold icon and skin.

    1. Open the NCSoft Launcher. For each client, right click and on the pop up menu, chose "Properties."

    2. In the Properties window, you can add many of the old command line tags you use to with the shortcut to the old launcher. For the blue Hero skin, leave it blank or use -uiskin 0. For the red Villain skin, use -cov or -uiskin 1. For the gold GR skin, use -uiskin 2. Hit the OK button when done.

    3. For each Desktop Shortcut Icon, you can customize which icon to show. Right click on the shortcut and in the pop up menu, chose Properties. In the main or shortcut tab, look for the "Change Icon" button and click it. If you get an error message or only one icon to chose from, click the Browse button and navigate to the cityofheroes.exe file in your main City of Heroes directory. You should now see a choice of five icons to use. Chose the one you want for each client's/server's shortcut.

It's announced in I20 Beta, which they forgot to unlock for everyone before going to bed tonight. (Or maybe they want to make sure a patch goes through before announcing it tomorrow morning.)

So, it's not really officially announced yet, and plans might change. So, don't cancel your Wedding because of it.

And yes, the next 4 slots are unlocked. As well as two Incarnate Trials and the two new level 20-40 TFs.

Actually, my challenge question was: "Tom's dog?"

Now, I know which Tom and I know the name of his dog. Don't know why I was locked out (didn't get a chance to try all caps, but I never use all caps in passwords).

Point being, that at one point, they allowed us to come up with our own challenge question and not "Mother's maiden name?".

    3. Tying the security to IP address is not a good idea in isolation. Its not as stupidly bad as the thing above, but its still not good. Cloud vendors like to do this, and its fine if the goal is not to secure the system, but to restrict the pool of potential attackers. Sure: if you IP address changes often, eventually someone else will have your IP address and could attack your account. But that is still better than everyone on Earth being able to do that. The problem, as others have specified, is that people whose addresses change a lot will have to reauthenticate often. This violates one of the cardinal rules of security: don't make it harder for the user than it would be for an attacker. I could *attack* the system easier than someone whose IP address changes every day could even use the system normally. In the security community, we call that an Epic Phail.
Well, this only applies to the Master Account, and how often is someone accessing their Master Account. I'd agree that IP checking and constant challenging would be burdensome to use the forums or enter the game.

...alright. so uninstall the new launcher which so far is garbage. reboot the computer. restart, and try again. now city of heroes doesnt show on the game list, though i still get the same 3 choose your own adventure style windows. so, go to the ncsoft account page so i can reload the client, only theyve recently implemented new security measures. i think im putting in the right answers: my secret question(though i really dont recall putting that as my question, but i definetly know the answer to it so i mustve), my birthdate, and the mish mash flash image letters. only obviously im not putting something in right. the capitalization of my secret answer? spaces or no spaces? does the day of my birthdate need to be 2 digits or is 1 sufficient? what the hell letter is that in the flash image: a u.... a v??? is that an r next to an n or an m??? WTF!?!?!

well.. FML. now im locked out of my ncsoft account management page, i cant dl the game client, i cant figure out how to get this piece of garbage new launcher to stop locking itself(since, ya know, the locked file is nclauncher.exe.....), and i cant get the original launcher to work since i already dl'ed the original update through it so when you click on it, it looks for this stupid new launcher.....

what else can POSSIBLY go wrong??
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The travails of a locked Master Account are recounted here. Basically, an annoying Support Ticket and a one or two day wait will fix it.

You can try to redownload the client from here: http://download.cityofheroes.com/US/CoH_NA_Setup.zip or from any disc you may have.

I don't think your original problem with file-lock had anything to do with your account. Did you try to run the launcher as administrator?

Also, your old launcher should fix everything.

Not a bug. There's been a lot of patching on the Server since GR went Live.

The NCSoft Launcher's default is to start the game without really verifying files. So, it's a quick start, but you can wind up with a frozen client if the files are bad. You'll have to verify/repair the files specifically through the Launcher in that case.

It does check for game updates each time and the old tag, -project "coh", isn't working to bypass that. We'll have to see if the Devs can find us a new tag for game updates in case we need to bypass a buggy update server.

The Old Launcher is supposed to become unusable at some point. Whether that actually happens is unknown.

I don't know why it should, but it did for me. Just once. After that, it was fine. Funny thing is, I was able to get in the game just fine before the 'repair', so, I don't know what it was repairing. I sent in a /bug report about it.

If you switch back and forth between the new and old launchers, they'll keep on updating the main client, so, I wouldn't advise that.
  14. Well, I have no real need to access my Master Account for weeks and weeks. Probably next time I *need* to will be with the next boost pack which is at least 2 months away.

So, I can wait out an email support ticket rather than call it in.
  15. The cut missions seem to come and go... like the temp power reward it's supposed to give.
  16. During the Perez mission right before the zone hunts, I tell the team:

I'll take Clockwork in Atlas. Stay in Perez to defeat the CoT ambush.

Circle of Thorn in Perez is the first hunt, so that's done.

I'll Oportal out of the mission to go to Atlas. The Clockwork are on the building roofs near the Perez gate. That's the second hunt.

    Then I have this bind:

/bind <key> Outcast in STEEL / Hellion GALAXY / Skull KR / Troll SKY / Vahz FAULT / Crey BRICK / Freak CREY.F / Raider TV / Fam & Tsoo IP / Council BOOM / Warrior TALOS / BP DA / Rikti FF / DE & Nem EDEN

It helps focus the team on the tasks.

Then it's just coordination of the team as those who finish a zone leapfrog to the next. Remind them to shout out for help if they can't find their targets.

You have to watch for players who want to do their pet targets at the expense of efficiency, e.g., someone who parks themselves in Dark Astoria to get Banished Pantheon even though that's still a long ways off. If I'm the leader and I ask nicely for them to got to Bricks instead to get Crey and if they don't move... I'm not above kicking them from the team. Maybe they'll learn to be a team player someday.

I had a Tanker once who wasn't participating in the hunts because he said, "I don't have AoE attacks." What an idiot. Like one-punching 10 grey foes takes too long. <rolls eyes>

Since I'm done with my Assist badge for the WST, I don't intend to run a lot of Numinas, like I did with the other TFs. But if I was going to, I'd tell the team before we start,

"When we get to the zone hunts, call out a zone you're taking and go there to find the faction. I'll post the list when the time comes."

"Don't leave any gaps in covering the zones, and if I ask to to switch to a different zone that needs coverage, please do so."

"I expect everyone to run around and participate in the zone hunts, regardless of AT or powers."

"Does anyone have a problem with that?"

WAY TO ******* GO! So now I have to call NCSoft for every stupid friggin problem!

Please. Phone the guys in Korea and ask them to hire someone who actually KNOWS how to implement a support and authentication system!

    This is absolutely unforgivable!
This is my experience, too. I know I answered the challenge question correctly. After about 5 tries, it locked my account.

When I tried to use the 'reset my password' route, that was blocked because... my account is locked. (Never mind that this is the industry standard for verification.)

I've used Support before, so, I have a Support Account already... which has my main email on file. But I can't get into my Support Account because... it has locked my account which is associated with that same email.

It did give me the opportunity to reset my password for my Support Account... and never sent me the email with the new password.

So now, I've created a new Support Account with a different email (really, I need to maintain extra email accounts to deal with Customer Support?) and am waiting to hear from them.

This should be good... the level of utter incompetence displayed so far should provide some continued entertainment.

Though, nothing would be as entertaining as trashing NCSoft's name through the mud in every gaming website in existence if this doesn't get fixed. Great way to appear as stupid as SOE.
  18. Well, I advocated for reduced XP, like with the invasions and for inspiration drops. I hope it gets revisited. In fact, the problematic reward table keeps the issue alive in some discussions...
  19. Computer RPGs tell a story. And while they give you some customization, the MadLib-iness of a fill-in-the-blank adventure can only go so far. The GameMaster (the Devs) have to come up with Big Bad Guys and then the Really Big Bad Guy.

Up to level 50, it was Nemesis and then Lord Recluse for the two 'Cities' of the game. Now with Praetoria and a post-50 development cycle, it's Tyrant.

If you don't like those characters, you're really out of luck, cause that's what the story is. Period. There's a two year development cycle for these stories before they go Live and there's no chance for a mid-stream correction. That's just the way it is. And the way it will be for the one and half year roll-out of that content.

If one doesn't like it, you hold your nose and muddle through, or you quit. Or, make up your own story and play it in the AE. There is no Plan B with the Content to go into a whole other direction. It's an impossibility, really, unless you want two years work to be scrapped and then wait two years for a different story.

I'm OK with people not liking it and venting. I actually agree with many of their points and desires. I'm not OK with people who feel they must make everyone else feel as miserable as they do by venting in every discussion they can. Make your own spleen venting thread and get it out of your system. Nerdraging in every thread one can is childish, and I'll call it as such when I see it.

The problem wasn't something trivial like "there's no story attached to it." The problem was I could see the flailing around that was happening trying to make ad hoc ways of integrating Alpha into the main game as the bridge content between the standard game and the incarnate end game. And it was creating a situation where players would quickly get burned out farming shards through mass kills without anything to actually use the Alpha slot on. Psychologically speaking, that would have been a bad way to launch the slot. Some people wouldn't care, at least in the short run, but it would give a lot of players the wrong impression about what the whole point of the entire system was. And even if attempts were made to correct that downstream, that doesn't always work. Once a first impression is made, it can be extremely difficult to overturn it. The huge uncontrolled farming opportunities that existed in the AE at launch and were not instantly remediated created a first impression that in my opinion poisons the image of the AE to this day. It was seen as an accelerated reward earning platform, and when it was "fixed" it became valueless in the eyes of many, because its original primary usage was nullified.
Well, it was supposed to be a sneak peek at what the slot was about. It was billed as such. It was a peek at the mechanics, but some couldn't abide a purely mechanistic addition to the game without an accompanying story and so they complained long and loud and in many threads (sound familiar?). Those of us who disagreed with that never countered them because we thought, "surely the Devs aren't going to give into this!" But they did.

And when it finally was released with its 'story', it was still just the first two tiers of the Alpha Slot, which was pretty much unchanged from its sneak peek status.

I'm not sure what you mean that the first two slots had 'nothing to use it on'... a universal enhancement that is usable on any 45+ content is quite useful. It wasn't a game changer for Apex or Tin Man TFs in I19. The only thing different was Ramiel's arc... which had its own whine-fest attached to it (aren't they glad they got their 'story'?).

AE was a huge system dump with lots of areas for things to go wrong since it was an entirely new set of leveling up reward system partially put into the hands of players. The two tiers of Alpha, however, was just a toe in the water at sneak peek time (Going Rogue release) and the very same toe in the water when it was finally released (I19). I don't see how they're comparable.

The delay was over 'story', not mechanics. Lack of story was what the rabble decried. It's what Positron said was the reason it was delayed. And when it finally debuted, the 'story' was the only thing that was different. It was the story -- one four mission story which made everything perfect!

Lore Slot has a story... people should be happy!

    Experience
    Influence
    Enhancements
    Inspirations
    Salvage

The Inspirations one bugs me a lot, and the lack of rewards from mobs kind of discourages me to do them on a Praetorian I'd be levelling, as I'd do all that effort just for the end reward.

Has there ever been a reason from the devs as to why there's no reward-y goodness?
They didn't want them farmed. Theoretically, a MM can camp the spot and if his pets are capable to defeat the enemies, he can step away from the computer and level up without doing anything. Events produce infinite foes to a single spot. And since they use the scaling-battle code, the player will never outlevel them.

So, all the rewards were moved to the reward table at the end of the mission.
