  1. So we have a generic pool power set called Fighting which adds basic smashing melee attacks and defenses. Why can't we have a Shooting pool power set that adds ranged gun attacks? Or a Blades pool which adds edged weapon (lethal) attacks (along with a parry and dodge perhaps)? Is it simply because there is no way to provide weapon choices for pool powers (if so, that surely can't be that difficult to implement)?

There are lots of character concepts in which a toon should have martial arts and guns as attacks. Or martial arts and swords. Or guns and swords. Am I the only one who thinks a Shooting pool (and maybe a Blades pool) would be a good idea?

    In all honesty I don't.

But I sometimes find myself on these teams that do and was wondering where my understanding of the game was failing me. I think I was merely underestimating the impact of the higher difficulty settings. Unfortunately, I get the feeling from some of the team chat that anything less than +4/x8 is deemed unworthy of their time, as if only amateurs play at lower settings. Which is fine except I always knew CoH as a game where playing smartly trumped slotting (unlike other MMOs in which having top-tier gear means everything). I am learning quite a bit about how the game has pushed its own boundaries, here and there, over time, and consequently how my understanding has become outdated.

As I've stated in a previous thread, I prefer to play "casually", which is to say I don't want to obsess over min-max builds. I'm willing to investigate set IOs a little, but I'm not interested in becoming an expert, as it were. If that means I'll always be woefully outclassed at the insane difficulty settings then I'm actually okay with that, and I'll just try to avoid those teams in the future.

It was particularly confusing to me because the leader of a recent team of 50s was a dual pistols blaster, and he was jumping in and taking every alpha as a matter of course. My old--and clearly outdated--notions of the limitations of blasters was perhaps doing me a disservice in terms of setting my expectations for what I could survive or achieve as part of this team. "Well if he can just jump right in as a blaster, then I should be able to join him and survive just as well!" I couldn't have been more wrong.
  4. I think the thread has split into two separate lines of discussion.

One line covers the issues surrounding Blue Centurion's actual character, which is not in danger of violating any IP (though that may not be protection enough against being generic'ed; being in the right isn't usually sufficient defense against lawsuits in this country). The other line covers the general subject of characters that clearly do cross IP boundaries. I hope Blue doesn't start to feel that the latter discussion is meant to apply to the former, because it doesn't.

    This is a fair question.

My brute has Willpower, not Regeneration. But be that as it may, the build for this character is aimed mostly at character concept rather than min/max goals. I was not planning to take anything from the Fighting set since I don't need any more attacks and I don't want any more toggles. I was planning to take energy mastery in order to take the powers that add health and end recovery, but that's it (along with Stealth and Invisibility for concept and situational utility).

The idea behind this character is not to make her an off-tank, but to make her merely a more survivable scrapper. The DPS part of this plan will evolve from here on out as I start to slot up her attacks, and will eventually put Crushing Impact sets in five of her attacks, along with a Ragnarok set in Spinning Strike, etc. But all that set IO stuff will happen at L50.

At L32 I don't yet have my self Rez or the Last Stand power from 38. But neither one of those is used during normal combat routines. All my other defenses are already slotted the way they will be when I'm 50, it's just that they aren't slotted with L50 IOs yet (obviously), but with L30 IOs instead, which are the equivalent to green SO+ enhancements, which at one time in the game's history were considered pretty effective.

Everyone's advice has been very helpful, at least insofar as it helps me to scale back my own expectations as to what I should hope to accomplish when on these sorts of L50 teams. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds his characters whiffing constantly and faceplanting without much warning.

And I've learned not to try and survive the alpha, but these teams of 50s do not seem terribly opposed to aggoing two or three x8 mobs at once, especially Arachnos mobs. Being overwhelmed is probably part of the fun for them, but for me it just means more time chewing on the floor. Oy veh.
  6. That's a fair question.

I guess I figured that since my defenses were already maximally slotted that I wouldn't expect to be any less survivable sidekicked to 50 than just running at my natural level of 32. But the difficulty setting makes a huge difference I guess. I don't encounter that many mid-level teams running at +4/x8; that seems to be more the purview of all the 50s out there looking for a challenge.

A 14 isn't going to have as many enhancement slots as a 32, nor as many attacks to build attack chains as a 32, nor is a 14 likely to be as endurance efficient as a 32, so naturally I wouldn't expect similar performance. But the number of attacks I have at 32 is pretty much the same as any L50 (who isn't pimped out with Incarnate powers), so it's not like I lack for available firepower. My attacks aren't slotted as heavily yet, since I prioritize defenses, but my ability to "contribute" kind of has less to do with dps and more to do with how often I seem to faceplant.
  7. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try them and then /bug it if I can't seem to isolate the issue and resolve it on my own.

    Cheers!

This is certainly a problem on Virtue and Freedom, and to an extent I sympathize with you. But as much as I wish some of those old, dead accounts would just get name-wiped, I'm also glad they weren't because I returned to the game after a 3-year hiatus and I'm very pleased to have all my old characters, names intact, still available to me.
  9. So I've noticed that it is extremely common for teams of 50s to run around doing missions at +2/x8 or +4/x8. And, to their credit, they rarely ever balk at inviting heroes of any and all levels to join them. The problem, of course, is that those L50s are geared up to be able to handle +2/x8 or +4/x8 whereas most mid-level toons are not. That means a rather poor survivability rate for those of us who join up with our lower level toons.

Is there any advice, short of "Don't join teams of 50s", that would help make adventuring with them more survivable? If I hang back and jump in (with my Brute) only when it feels "safe", I survive longer but I don't really feel like much of a hero, and I certainly don't feel like I'm "pulling my weight" for the team either.

For context, I'll just point out that my L32 Brute already has all the defenses she'll ever have, short of Incarnate powers or set IO bonuses. My slotting policy for melee toons is to prioritize defenses over dps, and so at L32 her defenses are already slotted for maximum effect. She's got L30 generic IOs slotted in every defense slot, which means she has the equivalent of green SO+ enhancements that never diminish in value. I'm told that all-SO builds can survive the "end game", that set IOs are not imperative for survivability, but maybe that isn't true for the +4/x8 style of "end game" play?

Sounds to me like the GMs were being racist, since they were unthinkingly jumping to a racist interpretation of that name. They must not have been aware, for instance, that the nickname "squint" has been used for over six years on the television show Bones to describe scientists and scholars.

It also recalls to mind how Bob Dylan tried to stop Apple from naming their component software language Dylan. All Apple had to do was state that it is an abbreviation of Dynamic Language, and not named after anyone at all, to have the whole matter swept away legally (other options would have been to claim it was named after the poet Dylan Thomas).

If asked, I would simply have said the name Zerg was inspired by Mitch Zerg of http://mza-usa.com/.
  11. Unless the name Zerg is trademarked by Blizzard, and I don't believe it is, there is little to worry about. The Zerg race is not a trademarked product line nor the mark of trade of a franchise (that would be "Starcraft") or business entity (that would be "Blizzard Entertainment"). A name can not be copyrighted, so there is no copyright violation to contend with.

There is virtually no legal grounds that I can fathom for persecuting--much less prosecuting--the character name Zerg in CoX. However, the reality is that the mere threat of legal action from another entity with greater financial resources (like Blizzard) is sufficient to send companies like NCSoft scurrying for the shadowy comforts of "playing it safe" (and saving a lot of money in potential legal defense fees). The absurd suit brought against this game by Marvel and DC was a testament to the full range of legal abuse available to large corporations with very deep pockets.

So while there is no actionable violation inherent in using the name Zerg, that doesn't mean an NCSoft GM won't generic you in an effort to keep the Almighty Blizzard from even blinking in their direction. I am convinced that such a suit would never stand up in court, but the costs of winning such a suit is more than NCSoft would ever be willing to absorb just so players can have whatever innocuous name they like in the game.

I solo'ed the Roy Cooling story arc with my brute at level 30, set at normal difficulty (no AVs). I had to take on two EBs in succession: the Sky Raiders captain followed by the Malta Zeus Titan and got through it thanks to a healthy diet of small, medium, and large insps.

Are the SSAs of comparable toughness?

That's really good to know! Thanks for that info.

If none of the above apply, and it continues to be an issue, fill a bug report with any hard facts. Also keep in mind random drops are random.
My tray was completely empty the entire time. We fought nearly every mob in the Posi TF. We fought every single Council mob in the Citadel TF. Random is random, yes, but the odds of not receiving one single enhancement drop during either TF feels to me like it should be zero.

TBH with you though, these things are so short that you could probably be halfway thru a solo run in the time it would take to form a team.

I usually like to do about 4 runs back to back, getting each reward option at completion. Takes about 30 mins to an hour for all four runs. It would take much longer if I tried to form teams.
    You solo the SSAs?

What level is your toon, how is s/he slotted out (any IOs?), and what Incarnate abilities do you make use of (if any)?

My main toons right now are a level 36 ice troller and a level 30 SJ brute. My brute might be able to solo it, but an ice/storm troller is definitely a team-oriented toon; soloing anything with that character is painful in the extreme.
  15. What is the best way to find people forming teams for the SSAs?
  16. But the part about not receiving any enhancement drops from mobs during the entire Positron or Citadel TFs still holds.
  17. Maybe I am thinking of Death From Below. Are these powers Auto powers that don't go in a power tray?
  18. So I played in a number of teamed story arcs and Task Forces over the weekend and I noticed that no matter what enhancement reward I clicked on at the end, I never recieved it (I always chose the Accuracy enhancement, but one never dropped into my tray). What's going on?

I also noticed that I did not recieve a single enhancement drop the entire time I was doing the Positron TF (both parts). Is this because I was exemplar'ed down under the TF's level cap?

  22. I am in love with the GRPO (Going Rogue Pre-Order) enhancements. With two in Initial Strike and three in Heavy Blow, I am having more fun with Street Justice than I've had with just about any other powerset. These enhancements are pretty darn amazing if ya ask me, especially given how much impact they have on new toons as they work their way up through the early levels.

I'm not sure I see the logical distinction. If the server transfers and PP stipends are not given out unless you subscribe, then in what way is it incorrect to say the monthly subscription is subsidizing them? Just because you can't opt-out of these bonuses--and therefore there is no explicit reimbursement for doing so--doesn't mean that NCSoft doesn't internally consider (and calculate) the market-value cost (as a portion of the subscription fee) to provide them as "perks".
