I remember when my store was still open, and I was ordering for us. It was typical of my boss to slice my numbers down to the bare bones if anything at all on these "new, indie" books... o.o But it was one of the few titles that, while other mainstream books were tanking and sales slumping, I literally doubled the orders every single month and ALWAYS sold out. Every time. Until my boss closed the store down which sucked.
I follow him on Deviantart, such a great artist and lots of fine story telling. I haven't had the money to buy the tpbs though, which means I'm about... 4 years behind on the story now. :/ -
Sometimes people cannot be taught how to do something that comes naturally to others.
Case in point, a great friend in our original Call of Cthulhu game. He always - always - played soldier types, didn't matter WHAT system it was. We tried getting him to do new things, he was just *not with it*.
And I'm actually quite the opposite of the "throw away the generators" - I LOVE them, because they make my mind squirm around HOW this character gets that item or WHY they lost their love interest. It makes for far more fun in the long run for me personally. I don't think it's lazy, I do however think that it's necessary for some folks who just do NOT understand the how's or why's of their own character. To a lot of people, as long as they have a gun and count their bullets, or whatever, they're HAPPY. -
... And here I am thinking that they're just tainting the Tron universe with marvel zombie fodder. :/
-
There are so many categories... lol! I have WAY too many options to choose from!

I'm sorry, but it IS their responsibility to remind folks. It's their contest. You'd think they would WANT to remind people because real life does tend to get in the way. It's rather insulting to say anything else. Of course it wasn't the most important thing in my life. My mother being in the hospital? Yeah. But the fun stuff that I get to do when I'm NOT worried about whether she's eating or pooping herself? Gee, you'd think I could stand a reminder, because I honestly can't even remember what DAY it is sometimes because I'm a little preoccupied.
Putting up a time conversion is a minute part of any organizational post. It's something that should, by any and all accounts, be inserted in EVERY SINGLE POST regarding an event, I don't care whether you think it's stupid that some of us can't convert in our heads or even care to google it - if it had been done right there in that first post, by the person RUNNING THE EVENT, I would not have written down the WRONG time. Pretty simple.
You are correct: Because they've been laughably bad about this for 5 years running. Sure, it's "their event". Then they should figure out "player event" doesn't just mean "whoever they scrape up to participate".
Those of us here on the forums DO participate. And we HAVE given our feedback. Sad to say, "adding rules" does not mean "adding fun and participation". Obviously. -
Quote:It was not, though, listed in the full events calender up in the top of the forums, where I kind of expected a global-wide contest to be announced, right? Not taking sides here, and hopefully not adding fuel to any ongoing virtual fires, but...
This event was listed in the Protector Activity Calendar (http://lnk.in/procal) for about 10 days now, with a link to this thread and a brief overview of dates / times / prizes.
There are a half-dozen people involved in trying to keep this tool current and relevant. -
Though it may very well come down to a "chicken or egg" scenario regarding the 'was D&D geared for number crunchers or did they affect its changes' thing... Don't forget that at its core, D&D was created by number crunchers in the extreme. War gamers =/= role players. While it's possible, certainly, to have extensive backgrounds and information for your D&D character, it's not even remotely necessary.
I do have to say that at least the World of Darkness books didn't continually reiterate the same stuff over and over and over the way Palladium did, and to an extent how the Deadlands and its subsequent releases had. They were worth reading... however, until what, 3rd edition of THAT property, almost all of it was contradictory and I always felt like I was beta testing their books instead of reading a finished product. They definitely cater to role players... and that may be because the one time we tried to get one of our players to make a character, he pretty much started screaming at how the dice "didn't do anything like what they thought they should". The 'curve' on the original Vampire game ... was... shoddy? A patchwork of bad?
Anyway I like my character creation to be reasonably complex, and my game play to be quick and smooth.
Oh - another poorly done but interesting game was Hong Kong Action Cinema. Played that a few times, but the combat system was SO hella-bad unless everyone had reams of notepaper and calculators for determining refresh and heal rates... ugh. But tons of fun in theory. -
Quote:It was a concept contest? lolwhere? Definitely wasn't listed that way on Protector, not that I managed to get on it, because they didn't bother bumping their own thread or making an easy to read and easier to copy/paste time schedule for time zones.I competed on every server except for 3, and Virtue was the first (and only) server where they announced it was a concept contest. It seemed like every rule flew the coop when it was time for the contest on Virtue...new rules seem to come into play, too.
If it was truly a concept contest, then bios should have been read. I spent time creating a bio for one of my toons, explaining not only her look and her powers, but exactly what she was and where she came from. The bio pulled it all together, but I don't think it was even glanced at. The server where that happened...let's just say ALL the females went to the semi-finals because not a lot of people showed. It certainly wasn't called a concept contest on that server!
So...why a concept contest on Virtue only?
Apparently the PERC really needs to step up and listen to the folks who are complaining about essentially the same things year after year. *sigh* it's a shame that things didn't go well here either, you'd think that on the RP server there would have been more interest... -
Or perhaps even posting the winners here. Or, making sure that they even care enough to represent our server in the finals.
-
Yup.
Seems more and more like a "let's hold a costume contest and only give our own friends the prizes" feel to me. Worse, it's a "whoever is in pocket d and didn't even know there was a contest but not wait until others are there to hold it", which is just pathetic. -
Quote:As I am the one who checked the line and verified there were only 8 and invited all the contestants. Were you on the platform with the other female contestants? I am not saying I could not have made a mistake, however there were 4 of us who were checking the area.
You mean the post you posted in multiple times. Someone could of bumped it, I will give you that, however it was here for a few weeks. Obviously you were not that interested in attending or you would of made a point of taking note. Also, for time conversion. They are stated as being in eastern. If you feel so strongly about PERC policy, volunteer, we need Protector reps.
Ice
When I wrote down when and where to go, my mother hadn't had to go to the hospital at 2 in the morning, nor over to the nursing facility for the next week where I've been visiting her trying to get her to eat and move instead of lay down and die. I come here to this game to escape crap - the least you could do is not make it sound so insulting that I wrote down where and when, but got too busy to triple check.
You "will give me" that someone should have bumped the thread. You need to be the one bumping it. You are the ones running the contest, not us. You need to get on the time conversions - it's very easy to just WRITE IT DOWN so people DO know, instead of, say, forgetting that it MIGHT be in a different time zone as they live, or MIGHT have been 'central instead of eastern' or whatever. It's your duty to do so, not mine.
And as for volunteering? Hell no. I've known plenty of people who've tried to help you people out by offering suggestions, joining, and finally getting so frustrated at the lack of common sense and communication among the group, that they quit. So, no. How about you actually read what I said: you need to get your own act together before you run anything more, because frankly you're not even bothering to phone it in at this point.
Nothing on the community calendar, didn't see you address that. Also, when there are people still hanging around? They're waiting to be judged. Obviously with four people you were STILL unable to organize well enough to judge everyone. That's not a failure on the other player's part here, don't lay that on them. You started the contest, you need to run it as carefully and thoroughly as you can in order to avoid exactly this kind of thing - and on Triumph to boot. Nice work.
Don't just blow it off, dude. It's time you actually started taking notes. Nothing I've stated here is difficult for you to manage, it's just plain lazy that none of the suggestions here and elsewhere have ever been followed. -
PERC needs to really upgrade its methods, then. You're getting a constant stream of suggestions and complaints, you should actually act on them instead of lamely defending the same way of doing things and getting so many people disappointed and angry with the organization.
Triumph: it happened poorly on Protector apparently too - not even a peep of "by the way this is today" or any replies in the thread there... and, not even included on the community calendar.
Disappointing for everyone =/= perc doing a good job. -
Wait... this was at 1 pacific... right.
So far in my experience, the PERC really needs to bone up on saying the right times for each time zone, server, and whatnot, AND actually advertising the day before the events. I was really hoping to bring my gorgeous Praetorian to this, but without any hint of "by the way this is at such a time tomorrow be there or be square" here, what the hell point is there to even HAVING the contests? This isn't the first time that the PERC has royally screwed up on contests. You guys need to actually listen to the complaints you get, and instead of defending your actions (or inaction) you need to actually CHANGE what you do.
Thanks for nothing, guys. -
That's true about 7th Sea. We played for a short time in that system and I really enjoyed it.
And I have to absolutely echo the "D&D is NOT a beginners game" line though. It is NOT. It never was an "easy" game to learn, and I don't think it ever will be because of the sheer amount of STUFF that you can pack into a supplement book.
The system I would have liked to see more of, and what I'd have far preferred the Star Wars license go to instead of where it wound up, was the Pinnacle games "Deadlands" system. I loved it, it was fun, creative, it wasn't so darn anal about the rules... I think it was flexible enough to more adequately simulate the whole Star Warsy realm, rather than d20 or even the plainer d6 system it had before. -
FFFFFFFFFF.
That's... sad.
I thought that he hadn't lived to see his creations, though. I thought he'd passed on many years ago? I wonder who I'm thinking of.
But still, this is sad. However I'm so glad for the math that he gave us. Without it, seriously, our lives would be so freaking dull. So many games rely upon artwork that is essentially fractal in nature. Trees, random coastlines... oh man.
*raises a toast*
I wonder if he knew about the Mandelbulbs? -
*HAHAHAHA*
Yeah I know the state of affairs at Miramar can't be perfect. Friend of mine was a grease monkey on helicopters and planes for years, the awful things he saw makes me wonder how they get off the ground at ALL. -
That is an extremely good 'switch homage' though
I have yet to go through my pictures, but I will. I'll get something up sooner or later.
It was quite fun, though a little lacking on the cohesive theme. A suggestion, Protector when we invade other places we kind of take the planning phase more seriously and plot out where, when and who to follow, set our toons up in advance and plop them down so we can all switch at once. Definitely worked well that way when we invaded Freedom with our Newsies, even if they didn't quite appreciate it as much as you did at Justice -
*hahahahahaha*
Generally we have young Navy guys, actually, since our Marine base (at least Miramar) is more geared toward the guys who are going to be pilots and whatnot with a bit more under their belts. Now if we could get them to stop dropping planes on houses with people in them... O.o -
Everything that you need to know, though, will be on the character's sheet by the time you're finished. It's got a nice flow to it, the only flipping around is involved with reading details about powers or skills.
However, backstory is important enough with my game that you have to have at least read a bit about the society first, before leaping in.
I have a starter campaign that I've made 'semi-pre-generated' characters for. You roll or choose for many things on each, but they're already set up with a bit of background and some have certain features or powers already.
For my part, if a game can't emulate one of a couple different styles of characters I've always had in mind, easily and on the first try, I don't bother playing it. Shadowrun was one such game, there are many others.
Where I am more concerned about play, is in combat or other such things. For me, if your character and group takes a whole night to create with your friends around, that'll leave you another week or few days to think on it before actually playing. Then, actually playing, I don't want to have to sit down for a FULL NIGHT OF COMBAT just rolling dice and waiting for results. To me, that's boring as hell. I'd rather have more exploration and in-character play, to make me feel that my character has been fleshed out more and more. I love rolling dice, don't get me wrong, but when you've got 3 people beating on 5 enemies for 7 hours (and yes, that's happened in a game my ex made) that is simply too much. knowwhatimean? -
Pretty sure they'd have stolen that to make the one Hulk story line too... o.o
-
lol
Well there are 12 stats, but they're organized sensibly. (Physical and Social.) Chargen rolls ARE kind of stupid, I will admit, but I did a LOT of work to get them to be where I want em. The fact that there are 6 'breeding levels' gives your character the potential to either be 'normal' or 'insanely amazing', so...
... Orifice. lol. There's no magic, but it might as well be, they've got psionics. So the side effects are ... well, less thrilling than anything you'd find by rolling on the "Grimiore of Questionable Spells"...
I actually suggest creating the character's 'to hit' matrix by yourself because I was too lazy to make one Plus knowing the math is either right there in front of you with a calculator (halves, -30s etc) or pretty easily eyeballed, I didn't bother with it. Too many charts. I've got plenty of charts, plenty of my own darn artwork (I am so sick of my own artwork...) and MORE than plenty of my own characters created over the last 20+ years... ugh. So. Many.
Heck here's the bulk of it (mostly social info, but some raw character generation info)
http://www.droppin-the-fork.com/zeki...zekira/woz.htm
Plus a character generator that actually uses all my hard-earned math to create randoms...

I live in San Diego and have no regular games any more, because my car insurance is gone and I can't legally drive.
However, I *AM* writing and almost finished with the bulk of my "World of Zekira" rpg which is badly in need of actual playtesting. I've been writing the darn thing for over 20 years now, the game system itself is done, the basics of character creation and combat, etc those are all done. Details on the world and animals, not fully done. ... If anyone's interested I can slap my current files into a pdf zip and let you look em over. It's not meant for "immature" players, nor "inexperienced" ones, because of some of the subject matter.
Also, it was created when I was around 15. I am a girl. I loved horses. No it's not Barbie lol but it's more geared toward female players (that's my guess anyway). System and world are flexible enough that you could have a variety of genres for play style: horror, political intrigue, exploration, comedy, superhero, furry, pretty much anything's up except 'cyborg' stuff because the characters would lose any powers they've got with implanted stuff. -
We had pain / flinch responses long before we became intelligent. It's another step to producing "artificial Human intelligence". We already have plenty of artificial non-human intelligence, we've already got programs that can make other programs, etc. They're not Human like, though. These, I would guess, would have the benefit of understanding 'ow'. I wouldn't say they should "encourage" a program/bot to do this, I wonder if they'd ever think of giving them a feedback loop so that the harder they punch the other guy, the more it hurts them...

I live in a trailer park.
But we don't have tornadoes. -
I felt the Northridge quake in San Diego, my friend's place was pretty much rubbled by it. :/ But still lol yeah you guys in the middle of the country with your airborne threats of tornadoes... I will take my rumbly roller coaster earthquakes any day.
Sooner were you at the first meet and greet? Where they'd finally gotten War Witch down here to california and she was all O.O EARTHQUAKES. It was hilarious.
