...Are you one of the people I saw playing kickball near the monuments in DC? That'd be weird and coincidental.
[/ QUOTE ]
We actually play over near Congress. If you saw a team in pink getting their [censored] kicked, that was us. -
[ QUOTE ]
What kind?? whats a good secondary for both/either to make a tough tanker out of me?
[/ QUOTE ]
If you're going Tanker, I'd say that a Dark Armor/DB character might be fun. You never see that combination around. Dark Armor/Stone gives you a lot of control, but sucks down endurance.
[ QUOTE ]
Also, Aett, are you really Kickballin' in VA? Because I tend to find myself doing things in VA :P
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, this year, we're kickballin' in DC, but I do live in NoVA. -
A Ninjitsu Stalker!
What?!
But seriously, folks: a Fire or Dark Armor Tanker or Scrapper is a decent idea. However, remember that Karma's are for Defense powers, not resistance. As such, Dark Armor might be better, since Cloak of Darkness can take Defense sets, and you can pick up Combat Jumping for the other one.
Fire Armor has no Defense-set taking powers inherently, so you'd have to take two power pool Defense powers to put them both on the character. -
You should be okay. However, it would really be up to the GM that gets the case to really decide that. Basically, go ahead and name them that, then, if you think that it might be petitionable, petition yourself, and explain what they are. This way, you have a GM response that you can go back to if one says that it's okay.

I don't mind traveling to different zones for missions. I mind going back to my contact (say: Indigo), and having her tell me: "Good work, I have a new mission for you, but can't give you the details on it. Go speak to Crimson to get the details." And having her do this several times over the arc, then having Crimson do the exact opposite thing, makes me wonder why they don't just switch the arcs, so that the person with the data you need is the one giving you the missions.

I remember a certain dark defenderr player sending me a tell about reporting me for copyright violation because I made a toon named HALO.
My toon didn't have anything to do with the halo game. My toon's name was Halo, her secret ID was Angela Winger. She was an angelic-themed character. I've never even played the Halo game. I couldn't tell ya the first thing about it...other than I am pretty sure it was a FPS.
So I deleted the toon, but I've NEVER, EVER forgotten that player did that to me, nor have I forgiven them. Forever, in my book, they are jerks. That character was originally a champions character I made back in 1989, way before the Halo game came out.
I might re-make the toon some day...but, heck, it wasn't all that great a champions character to begin with.
But as a rule, I NEVER, EVER report ANYONE for potential copyright infringement. Why? Because it doesn't give me xp or insp or IOs or influence. I have better things to do in-game than inspecting other players toons. I'm not a rat, I don't rat out people.
So, if you have had a toon generiched...believe me...it was NOT me that turned you in...I'm not a rat!
[/ QUOTE ]
This is the kind of thing I'm talking about. This person would likely have petitioned you, and then come on here and talked about it in some thread how they found you and reported you, so they could get E-high fives and back pats from the group.
And of course I know not all of you self appointed cops are like this, but for every rule breaker, there's someone like this out there, trust me.
[/ QUOTE ]
Seriously, if that person had told the story, and then said that they had reported the Reactor's character for copyright infringement, we would have laughed at them. A lot.
The Reactor's character did not need to be deleted. It was fine. It had no relation to the video game of that name. The GM would have dismissed the complaint.
There's a difference between petitioning actual copyright infringement characters, and characters with a name of something completely different. -
A few things:
Virtue is one of the larger servers. I am not sure where you were looking for people there, but there should have been plenty of people around.
Teaming generally nets you more XP per unit time. This is mainly due to the ability of a team to go through content faster.
To get from Atlas to Galaxy, go to the train station (identified on your map as a "T' icon), go through the larger, main doors, and click on the train. It will bring up a list of zones that you can get to from there. -
I don't think they were really replying to you with those comments, but more people like Not Rhino, who likened people reporting petitionable characters to blackmail and extortion.
I honestly have no problem with people who don't want to petition other people. That's fine. So you're good. The people I do have a problem with are the ones who call people tattletales and the like because the person informed a GM that they were breaking a rule. -
[ QUOTE ]
I understand that fixing bugs is important, but delaying content for bug fixes would be a bigger mistake.
It's really choosing between the lesser of two evils. You're also assuming the devs don't fix bugs AND work on new content simultaneously, which they do.
[/ QUOTE ]
There's also the assumption that the Devs could find and fix all of these bugs in the timeframe of a new issue. They might be able to get one or two of them, and maybe some older bugs, in a reasonable timeframe, but with code this complex, it might not be easy to track them all down.
Bugs can hide in seemingly innocuous places, completely unrelated to where the bug shows up in-game. Finding those can be a PITA. -
Do you mean 'arcs'? Threads are what we have here on the forums.
The MA has not replaced people doing story arcs. However, outside of the MA, a lot of people spend a lot of their time in the missions, so you don't see them as much in the zones.
There are only a few arcs that have ridiculous travel in them, Crimson and Indigo are the two worst, IMO. You picked a bad one to go back to. Some should be fixed, but most are fine. -
[ QUOTE ]
The instituted a word filter so they wouldnt have to crack down on things like that. if people deicde to tirn off the filter and then complain about use of certain words then its their own problem.
[/ QUOTE ]
There is also this. Obviously, the other person had turned off their filter so that they could see the swears. As such, just swearing is a little better than racial remarks, which might not be censored by the game's filter. -
Rule #3 of the Code of Conduct:
[ QUOTE ]
You may not use sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive language.
[/ QUOTE ]
That said, in generally private channels, such as global channels or SG channels, or even in tells to somebody that you know well, it's generally allowed. However, that doesn't mean that somebody can't petition it.
If petitioned, the chat logs will be retrieved by the GMs, and they will make a case-by-case decision as to the extent of the foul language and, if actionable, the extent of action they would take. If it's a first offense, it might be nothing more than an e-mail reminding them of the game policy. If it has happened before, then there might be increasing punishments. -

Oops, sorry.
Then who was that that I just saw say they were a female? Dangit. Stupid memory not working ever. -
If you're looking to solo a GM (and only a few are really soloable), I believe that a Rad/Sonic Defender is for you. Though, to be honest, even those that I've seen with that pair have used a Shivan.

[ QUOTE ]
It's also worth noting that monsters with resistance apply that resistance against resistance debuffs. So if an enemy has 50% damage resistance, and you hit it with a 20% resist debuff, it will resist 50% of the debuff, so your 20% debuff will become 10%, giving the mob 40% total resist.
[/ QUOTE ]However, even with the reduced debuff, you're still doing an additional 20% damage to them.
50% res, 100 damage attack: 50 damage dealt
50% - 20% debuff (reduced to 10%; 40% final res), 100 damage attack: 60 damage dealt
50 * 1.2 = 60
[/ QUOTE ]
A female knows math! You know what that means, kids. -
Just keep in mind: some missions do mention Miss Liberty, but reference her accurately, since they are talking about the mother of Ms. Liberty.
-
[ QUOTE ]
Pretty sure it was always Ms. Liberty...
[/ QUOTE ]
Same. -
That's kind of a prisoner's dilemma situation, isn't it? You're taking less Defense in the hopes that somebody else on the team has more to offer you?
I'd rather just take Weave and know for sure that I have that level of Defense, regardless of teammate's power choices. -

Yeah Ace. Positron popped in to say that since the same damn topic has been coming up every week for three years that they're going to actually do something about it instead of ignoring it and wishing it goes away.
And then my alarm went off, I woke up, took a shower and had my coffee.
.
[/ QUOTE ]
When you always have the same poster throw the thread off topic and push to that same topic for three years ranting and raving without any evidence at all, I doubt they will listen.
[/ QUOTE ]
In J_B's defense, he does bring alot of evidence to the discussion, but it's just almost entirely anecdotal.
[/ QUOTE ]
How can evidence be anecdotal? Don't we call those ... opinions?
*ducks the sarcasm bat*
[/ QUOTE ]
So you're saying that, in your experience, evidence can't be anecdotal? -

One can have sympathy for the creator of a "Thor" who looked nothing like the Marvel hero but rather had red hair and a beard, as in the classic mythologic tales. Reasonable minds can differ there. But the guy in the OP is a clearly out of line. The Generic Sixteen Tons is gonna drop on him, no doubt.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's part of my problem with this, I think there are a lot of asskissing eager beavers on here so anxious to "protect the community" that they go overboard on things.
Marvel no more holds a copyright on the name Thor, Dracula, or Aries than I do.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, since they have a copyright on the name "The Mighty Thor," I think they have a bit more than you do. -

I suspect blissful lack of awareness of the rules (EULA comes up, click OK, play game) is the root issue here. The character is not a clone, hommage, or adaptation, but simply The Vision, created in CoH, right down to the Marvel Universe bio.
[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks for bringing this up BBhumeBB. As everyone can see I left out certain vital pieces of information that would let people draw conclusions about the player, like Vet Rewards.
I also knew that this is an old hot button that will get emphatic responses from both sides.
I chose to reopen this topic because this character was a perfect example of copyright/trademark violation, and because with the release of I14 we have many new players that are most likely unaware of the EULA.
So with that explanation I want to thank every one who has participated so far in this thread, as well as extend that thanks to every one that decides to continue this discussion.

First off why would you even report someone who did nothing to you. Obviously mommy and daddy never told you being a tattletale is wrong unless you have been hurt in some manner.
Secondly ncsoft is breaking the very rule they generic us for.
Back in the 70's there was a tv show called "Land of the Lost" which has since been remade in to a movie staring Will Ferrell. This is also an area in Skyway City which is called you guessed it, "Land of the Lost". I'm sure Universal Studios bought the rights from Sid and Marty Krofft the original creators who remade the series themselves in the 90s. However I doubt that Cryptic or NCsoft paid for the rights to use this name.
Someone should report them to the copyright holder.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're kidding, on both counts, right?
There's a big difference between a homage and a ripoff. And copyright violations hurt everyone here.
[/ QUOTE ]
Seriously.
Eric, have you not heard of the Marvel lawsuit against this game, where they sued because you could make copyrighted characters from the comics? The settlement in that case pointed out that Cryptic and NCSoft (now just NCSoft) needed to take action against copyrighted characters. If NCSoft doesn't uphold their end of the agreement, we could be going back to court. That would siphon development dollars away to pay for the legal defense, which hurts EVERYONE playing the game.
So, yes, I think that reporting obvious copyright infringement is for the long-term benefit of everyone in the game.
I also love how people calling other people out for doing something wrong is being a 'tattletale.' Seriously, the person was doing something wrong. If they can't face the consequences of that, then they shouldn't have done it in the first place.
[/ QUOTE ]
Aett, too bad that's too long for a sig.
[/ QUOTE ]
Short answer: petitioning characters isn't wrong.
I can understand that some people don't want to do it, and that's fine. But they shouldn't then get mad at the people who do. -
Well, there are definitely many factors involved. If you want a better answer, the guys and gals up in the Technical Issues and Bugs forums are great with helping people figure out what needs to be upgraded.
Just be prepared to give them some more details then what you put here. -
If you're just talking about zone load times, then RAM is what you're after.

[/ QUOTE ]The kind of person who uses the word 'tattletale' is the kind of person whose mommy and daddy said 'Get away with whatever you can.'
Some of us were raised to respect rules and principles, and to think that when a person agrees to a behaviour, they should actually do it.
[/ QUOTE ]
True that.

Its called minding your own business. I mind mine but seems some people like to run around a virtual world and police it. Let the devs worry about it not take it upon yourself to ruin someones good time. Don't try and put a F'in twist on my words and state something stupid like " well going out on a Saturday night and drinking a few beers which is a good time, then getting behind the wheel of a car (censored)FACED.
Whoever said that Land of the Lost isn't a copyright infringement because its a name or words just shud up. So if i were to start a pizza joint called pizza hut BUT didn't server pan pizza, didn't have a red roof, didn't look like a hut then there is nothing that could be done, PLEASE!!
Even better how about me making a game or something for facebook call it "City of Heroes" but not super heroes but Policemen or Firemen were the stars of the game and they were stopping crime and rescuing the occasional cat in the tree. NCSOFT would send there high priced attorneys after me in a heartbeat.
"Land of the Lost" is a trademark which mean that it cant be used unless permission is granted. Google was recently sued because the OS they use for their mobile phones is called Android which could have lead to confusion with the registered trademark Android Data.
[/ QUOTE ]
You could not make a Pizza Hut that sold any kind of pizza, and make it in a state that already had Pizza Hut as a legally recognized business entity. That would be trademark infringement.
You COULD, however, likely make a Pizza Hut company that sold T-shirts. That would NOT be trademark infringement. It's why you can have A-1 pest removal and A-1 steak sauce operating in the same area. They do two different things, and aren't in even remotely the same business.
In this case, Land of the Lost is a trademark for a lost world where dinosaurs still exist, and within a very specific framework. Since the "Land of the Lost" in CoH has nothing at all to do with that franchise (no dinosaurs, no similar setting or characters), it is, at most, an homage, and not a trademark infringement.
If you want a case of two companies that have the same name, and do similar things, and how the case was eventually settled, I think that Burger King ran into some trouble with this in a city in Illinois or Indiana. The Burger King that was not a franchise of the Burger King that you may know, was created before the chain Burger King was established. As such, it was able to keep it's rights to be called Burger King in the town that it was set up. It cannot franchise out of that area, because of the other legally recognized business Burger King in the rest of the state. Likewise, the chain Burger King cannot set up a franchise within that town, as Burger King the individual place, has that name in that town.
