    Monday down time

I wonder if it could possibly have anything to do with the Spring Fling event that's starting tomorrow... nah, couldn't be. That would probably make too much sense.

It HAS to be GR Beta! omgomgomg let me innnnn!!!

  3. Hey... I've bought every booster within hours of them coming out! I even bought the mac version before it became a booster, despite not having a mac! Where's MY email begging for money!?

    You make me cry NCSoft.
  4. Personally, I'm bracing for disappointment: The announcement that has something to do with "Ultra" is just an official announcement of the news we got at Herocon. We get the specific features and all that jazz, but other than a few new pretty screenshots we don't get anything we didn't already know. The purpose of the announcement is just to have a page on the website to show off to the press and that we can direct friends to.

...Or it could very well be i17 (or i16.5) that has Ultra Mode and a few other minor but cool tweaks (enemies and glowies showing up on maps after a certain number of defeats, etc...)

But over all, I like to aim low and be pleasantly surprised.

Hm... what? Are you sure? A quick check shows that Test and Live are currently on the same version, so there shouldn't be a difference between the two. Although your settings can be different... so maybe your settings on the test server are just lower, or something?

Well, basically, even if there was a recent change, it's been on live for a good while now. I haven't noticed anything different, and I haven't heard any whining about it... so I'd say it's not an issue.

I'd be fine with people being a little pessimistic "oh, they aren't giving us info, we probably won't get anything else," but some of the posting in here made it sound like they were announcing facts about how GR works. When we don't know that at all. That was what my post was about.
My guess (which is just speculation, of course): Level 20 is the minumum level for side switching. It's also the level where Praetorian characters choose Hero or Villain and come to Primal Earth as part of the story line (though they can probably go right back if they want, I guess). So, the Resistance vs Loyalist storyline more or less ends at level 20, and at that point Emperor Cole's secrets are revealed... and it stops being shades of grey and begins being good vs evil. The morally ambiguous content in Praetoria (which people who start at Praetorians will be doing) ends, and the good vs evil content (which people who will be doing side switching) begins.

From what I've heard, we'll be going to Praetoria for side switching stuff (mostly, if not entirely), so there can't really be a level cap on Praetorian content since most of the people switching will probably be high leveled. The level cap mentioned for Praetoria is probably for the Loyalist vs Resistance (morally ambiguous version) content that the people starting new characters there will be doing.

From my understanding, we do have the career paths in Praetoria, but it's not as clear cut as heroes vs villains. Both sides are shades of grey, and both sides will be doing good and bad stuff (the Resistance, for example, can be either freedom fighters or terrorists, depending on how you look at them... and I imagine they'll be walking that line quite a bit).
At the end of it all, you get to choose to become a hero or a villain, but I'm not entirely sure how much of what career you chose will influence that, if at all.

Praetoria is more than just backwards land. The devs are trying to add more shades of grey and moral ambiguity to the story line... so it's more likely that BOTH sides will have good and evil missions that you can do (or not do) in order to determine if you become a hero or villain.

And yeah, it seems like your career path will be lost once you hit Primal Earth (but you'll still have your souvenirs, and maybe come other stuff, at least!). The factions on Primal are Hero, Vigilante, Rogue, and Villain. At least from the way I understand it.
For going from hero to villain the path is Hero -> Vigilante -> Villain.
For going from villain to hero the path is Villain -> Rogue -> Hero
The Praetorian factions don't enter into it at all.

    Cyborg Pack 2

I have to assume you're referring to costume change emotes, since we DID get normal emotes with the Cyborg pack (robotdance, powerup, and powerdown).

I wouldn't have a problem with them retroactively adding costume change emotes to the Cyborg pack (although I think it stands just fine without them)... but if they can't be added to the existing pack, then I'd rather they just add a couple of robotic-style costume change emotes to one of the free issues, or include them with Going Rogue (hey, we DO get the clockwork costume in that...)

I think Cole may have struck a deal with Hami during their fight... or may have even been the one to unleash him on Praetorian Earth to begin with. I don't think one is truly controling the other so much as they simply found a compromise where they both get what they want...

So either it's way simpler and less taxing on the graphic system to implement moving hair than I'm supposing, or expecting moving hair is unrealistic.
On the other hand, rigid capes would look ridiculous, but we're used to rigid hair. So, it's POSSIBLE that they could have developed a system that lets you turn off moving hair in the options, which replaces the moving pieces with similar looking rigid ones. Looking at it that way, it's POSSIBLE at least.

  11. Personally, I suspect that the recent drought in GR information (which seems to be ending! Yay!) might have something to do with it. As mentioned, Bab is one of the more vocal and approachable devs... so when people are thinking of someone to pester for GR information (that he's not allowed to give anyway), he probably comes fairly high on the list. So, if they're entering crunch time and he's being bogged down with irrelevant PMs that he can't hope to give a good answer too... it's understandable why he'd want to turn it off and take a break from being the forum nice guy for a little while.

    Just my guess, at least.

Also, the Devs have said that a single character could go back and forth on the alignment scales as many times as they wish. Since these costumes are faction tied (probably), I'd guess it'll be handled like the Vanguard costume: merits. You do X for the Loyalists/Resistance, you get a merit. Cash in Y number of merits for piece A/B/C/D/etc. So it'd just be a matter of doing the requisite feats and getting enough merits to get all the pieces you want.

    At least that's my guess.
Personally, I hope they're unlocked via missions. For example, the initiation missions unlock the set (since you're joining the club, you might as well look the part), or maybe there's a pair of TFs that cap the Praetoria story off that let you earn the costumes as a parting gift of sorts. I have nothing against the faction merits thing personally, but I'm just not sure how well it'd work in this situation.

Perhaps rather than merits, they tie it into the actual good/evil spectrum that you run through as you're doing Praetorian missions? If you go full Loyalist side, you can unlock all their stuff... and in order to get the resistance stuff, you have to go back to the other side, slowly working your way back to "neutral" first (of course, you wouldn't lose the parts in the process).

I think the biggest beef people have with merits and the like is that they seem like clutter. If it was more of a sliding scale in a different menu pane, I think most people would be fine with it.
  13. Okay. So here's a question. Looking at the costume it seems like it's been designed with players in mind (I'm not even sure if that's player or NPC, so yeah). Because of that I'm assuming it'll be available in the costume creator, given that's the current trend. And since it's tied to the resistance, I bet it's also unlockable.

Now, for parity's sake, the loyalists should also have an unlockable costume set (is it the clockwork set? or something we haven't seen yet?)... So the question is... SO THE QUESTION IS...! Can we unlock costumes from both Praetorian factions on a single character, if my above guesses are the case!?

  15. Too lazy to check right now, but is there a way to purchase specific salvage pieces with any alternate currency at the moment? I know there's the random rolls, but I'm not sure about specific pieces. If not, then I can see that being another problem...

Even if two pieces have the same chance of being dropped, the one that's more desired costs more because people are willing to spend more inf on it. So right now we have a situation where one piece of salvage costs 5 inf, and another costs 500,000 (which really put a pause in me trying to outfit my character quickly, let me tell you).

If you put more inf in the hands of the people, that just gets worse. Impatient people would be willing to pay more, and the average cost of that salvage may jump from 500,000 to 5,000,000 or even 50,000,000. So even if you end up saving a couple hundred million on some rare recipes because no one wants to bid above the store price... you might end up losing out on the salvage.

Unless you can buy specific pieces. In which case I wonder why the heck the ones I want are still so damned expensive...

-All those things which can only be bought with tickets or Merits? Let's let them be buyable with inf.
-People would be spending huge chunks of Infamy to buy random recipes or specific recipies. Inf would be dumped into the system and recipe supplies would increase, causing a drop in market prices.
Things that can't be bought from merit vendors, on the other hand, will likely experience a sharp upturn in cost. Purple and PvP recipes in particular. Those are already too expensive, I don't want some half-baked idea adding to the cost.

    Quote:
As far as trivializing things that can be bought normally with inf... Market trading aside, please, name some. Because Inspirations, Trainings, Dual Origins, and Single Origins are all I can really think of and all of those are already amazingly trivial.
Well, there are costume changes (which are already trivial due to free costume change tokens, but yeah), and crafting recipes. While most recipes aren't that bad, the level 50 common recipes can cost around half a million to craft before you get the badges. That's not really a trivial cost at all.

But that aside, your argument in this matter seems to be that if they're already trivial, what's the harm in making them even more trivial? ...If that's the case, and the only thing inf is good for these days is the market, why not just get rid of INF instead? Make it so you have to use reward merits on the market or something instead.

Hey, the point here seems to be needlessly getting rid of and combining currency types that serve different purposes, so why not start with the one that's the most trivial?
  17. I honestly don't see what's wrong with merits and tickets as they are now. I see no reason why they should be changed.

Plus, having a Hami raid being worth 26,500,000 inf a pop (for example) would only make things more expensive on the market, by my guess... not to mention trivializing things that can already be bought normally with inf. So this change would only really have the potential of making the game worse. We need ways to drain inf from the economy, not bloat it up.
  18. It's hard to come up with questions that haven't been asked yet... But let's see about this one.

In the HeroCon video preview of Going Rogue, it was show that the Preatorian Clockwork will mind their own business until you start trouble. Which is to say, they won't attack you until you attack first. Will this sort of behavior be added to some of the enemies in CoH or CoV zones as well? For example, villains in Paragon who are just loitering around, or trying to play innocent, and don't want to draw the heroes' attention? Or enemies in the Rogue Isles who tell you to just walk away, or not get involved... could it be made so that they don't attack you on sight, so you actually HAVE that option?

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=200797
Just a guess, but it may be a bigger issue here because in weapon sets with redraw, you only need to draw once and then the rest of the attacks in your chain don't do the draw animation (unless you use a power from another set or put away your weapon, that is). So it's more of an annoyance than an actual balance concern, since the draw part usually happens before combat even starts.

But with being able to change the weapon type used by the attacks, you can run into the situation where someone chooses more than one weapon to use for their power set, and actually get a noticeable performance decrease because they have so much redraw during combat.

Example: I decide that for my character concept, I only have a handful of "real" powers, and make up for the rest of them with gadgets and stuff. So some of my blasts have the normal from-the-hands animations, some use a high-tech-pistol, and some use a magic-wand. However, I'm a bit of a dullard and I use all three variants for powers in my main attack chain, causing me to have to draw a new weapon every other attack. And, being an MMO player, I complain about it on the forums and blame the devs.

It would actually be a problem that could be resolved by eliminating draw times. Hopefully BaB hasn't given up on that.

Protests against the advanced ski course reach a fevered pitch after Snaptooth sets the server record for fastest time.
  21. Personally, I think it'd be fine if they just made a popup warning that said something alone the lines of "Warning: Choosing weapon animations for a non-weapon set may cause a slight increase to cast time, and have a negative effect of damage per second." Or something worded a little better... then it'd be fine. If people are willing to take a slight, minor, entirely possible to overlook hit to their efficiency in order to look cool... then let them.
  22. Ah man, you posted in the wrong forums. Now you're gonna be kicked out of the secret GR pre-beta. Quick! Delete the thread before a dev notices!
  23. Now that I've had some time to think about it, the Motherships' purpose may just be mobile bases. Sure, it may cost less energy to port the troops between dimensions and no motherships... but then they have to recall them back after a sortie, then transport them back for the next battle, etc etc... unless they expect the troops to fight endlessly without any rest and resupply. Not to mention simply moving from one city to the next.

The motherships would let the Rikti troops to rest as needed in relative safety (well, until they realized that superheroes have a habit of blowing the ships up, anyway), and move easily from battlefield to battlefield, and dropping/retrieving troops as necessary. Given it's apparent armor and shields, it's probably impossible to destroy with conventional weaponry... so minus the whole superhero vulnerability problem, it makes a pretty good base of operations.

Rikti need to sleep too! And I don't think that invading extradimensional aliens get very good hotel rates.

They could then build up the portals to their own dimension in peace and quiet without having heroes bust in every few hours to destroy them.
I figure it's needed to use long range teleports, rather than just the short range stuff their troops can use. Plus, given the events of the Lady Grey TF and Dark Watcher arc (where the portal room is below the mothership, likely using the ship to power it), plus how they invaded in the first place, the motherships are probably used to open the cross-dimensional portals between here and there (albeit that ability was neutered for a while when Omega team destroyed the portal generators or whatever on the Rikti world).
