Raleigh/Durham Get-Together?

I may have to end up just getting a new car. Or at least a less-used one. Blah.

I used to go to the Raleigh-Durham area a lot when my sister went to school there. She's still in the area (Apex) and I'm sure she can give me advice on some good places for meet-ups.

I work in the Briercreek shopping center at the Banfield pet hospital inside Petsmart, Friday through Sunday, but would be more than happy to try to get together with some folks for a beer after work, or quick bite to eat. I'll keep an eye on this thread for as long as it is around.

I'm thinking we go ahead with plans for a get-together at the end of the month (12/1), while the forums are up. Then we can shoot for something next year for those who are occupied.

Now that I'm more familiar with the area, maybe Crabtree mall might be more centrally located compared to Southpoint?

Ura Hero brought up a good point, with the forums going MIA soon, we should use e-mail to do more timely updates.

For all of you who are interested in doing a get-together in the area, would mind PMing me a good email address for you, so I can set up a mailing list? I promise I won't send you unsolicited offers.

I could be persuaded to come out of hiding for this. I'm down in Benson now, but I used to live in Raleigh so I know my way around - unless I'm completely senile.

Crabtree is a good choice for a meet-up; it's right off I-440 on Glenwood Avenue, and there's a lot of food options there. I highly recommend Kanki (Japanese steak house), but there's a reasonably-sized food court, a Cheesecake Factory, a PF Chang's, and also some nicer/pricier dining options just outside the mall if people want to go that route.

While Crabtree is a good mall, keep in mind that it's going to be an absolute sea of humanity between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's packed into a small area compared to some of the other malls nearby, with deck parking and much worse traffic.

...I forgot what experience means.

You could just come to Richmond/Chester, VA and have less traffic!

At some point, I'd be down for that. Are you going to be able to head to the Northern Virginia get-together tomorrow?

Awright, executive decision time.

We're going to shoot for our first get-together for Sunday, December 2nd. It's the earliest we can organize a get-together while the forums are still up. And I won't have access to my swag box til then.

It'll be at Crabtree Valley Mall. Probably around lunchtime, so let's say 11:30, which will also help us beat the crowds and get parking. I'm thinking we'll do the Cheesecake Factory, since their menu should cover just about everyone's preferences.

I'll work out more specifics with folks via e-mail, and follow up in a new thread.

There's no such thing as beating the crowds at the Crabtree Mall three weeks before Christmas. Should be fine at the restaurant, but parking will probably still suck.

For those of you unfamiliar with the area, parking is easier on the four-tier parking deck behind the mall than it is at the front or along the sides.

FYI, I worked at the Crabtree Mall about 10 years ago. Employees aren't even allowed to park at the mall on Saturdays in December--they're required to park down the street at an insurance brokers' office and take a bus over.

Crabtree Mall sounds familiar. Is there, or was there, an Embassy Suites hotel across the street on a corner?

Yup! Right across Glenwood Ave.

Ah. Then I've been there before, 20 years ago when my department had a training budget. They'd put us up on the Embassy Suites and we'd go over to the Mall to kill time after class. Of course, crossing the 8 lanes of traffic on foot was dicey. There was a cross walk, but the green light only lasted 2 lanes if you walked normally. Most paused at the pedestrian median to wait for the next light, but I took it as a challenge to make it all the way across doing a "power walk". Thinking back on it now, I probably looked really stupid.
