It's in a few threads Cryptic also posted on one of their forums and Bab's (who works for cryptic) also posted it was just a rumor. No one is aware of any 5 year nonsense.

If the rumor is true, it's not really Cryptic that's doing it. It is their new parent company. Cryptic, like Paragon Studios, doesn't get to make decisions like that for themselves because they don't own the property.
My question is, why would anyone be playing CO in the first place, if they were still playing CoH?
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
There was *never* *never* *never* anything mentioned about a term limit on the leasing of the Cryptic game engine when NCSoft bought out the IP from Cryptic. *Never*.
Whoever was the first to say "5 years" pulled it out of their ***. Literally. And I mean just that: *literally*. Because their rectum was the only possible place that that number could have existed because it had *never* been mentioned before until yesterday.
*Never*.
Does anyone really think that NCSoft would buy out the IP and agree to a limited term leasing agreement?

Q) why cant we get a straight answer as to why the game was shut down. A) Company enforced legal gag orders are a common practice in situations like this. Anytime you sign on with a high profile comepany in any kind of position of authority we're commonly asked to sign such type statements. |
#2 I think there may be full validity to the lease "rumor". (snip) |

I think this was a quick decision at NC Soft they haven't even updated their website with the news. Also they did give their reason CoH doesn't fit in with their vision and plan for the future. As arbitrary as that seems to us it's something businesses seem to do. People want a reason they can understand so all these rumors have started but it's just simply they want to focus elsewhere.

It was a THEORY.
And, until BAB came in to say, "nah", it had some feasibility.
It is not the originator's fault that other folks took that theory and started spewing it as fact. Nor is it their fault that folks didn't take the time to read everything... including BAB's response.
No need for the vitriol.

The person that presented this idea originally was very careful to state that it was speculative conjecture, and that he could very well be wrong.

OK, then, my apologies to the first speculator, though, it should have been in a form of a question than a speculation.
Let the vitriol fester on those who repeated the speculation stripping the 'I may be wrong' from it. This is like a game of 'telephone' where each repeat, rather than distorting the message, distorts its confidence.

NCSoft closed the doors of Paragon Studios without even a handshake, so the rest really doesn't matter. I won't be buying their product ever again and could care less if they fail as a business from this point forward.

Yes, Cryptic sold it to NCsoft. BaB (tic-toc) isn't aware of any term limits, so that part is still just a rumor. He said he'll be checking and get back to us as he currently works for Cryptic.
I dunno, I wouldn't go about boycotting them but we would need their cooperation if NCsoft tries selling the game. I've heard that Cryptic/PW still own the rights to the engine...?
I wouldn't want a big increase in CO though 'cause that'd just reinforce their positivity about CoH shutting down >:/

Check the general discussion section - a thread there states that, according to Jack Emmert, the engine was licensed "in perpetuity" for two games.
No term limit.
