I currently have a free account and an unused Bootleg CD-Key. Will i get anything from activating the key on the account?

Sincerely,

Supraman

1) How do you know it's unused, if it's some sort of Bootlegged copy?

2) If it's bootlegged, I wouldn't be advertising that fact on the official forums.

3) If it does work, you might get some benefit from it, but without knowing what version it is, it's tough to say what you'd get.

The "Bootleg Edition" was originally a con giveaway that later showed up in stores for $0.99 or $1.00, it was just the disk(s) in a sleeve with only a 14 day subscription.

Nope, the Bootleg was just a trial account. The F2P game is now the trial account. Although, it is possible you'll get 14 days of VIP status.

That's what i was hoping since i can unlock the VIP items and drop to premium afterwards which would give me a few additionally benefits for character building that i wouldn't get on a free account. Can someone list the stuff i would get for free that transfers over when i drop to premium?

Sincerely,

Supraman

Just out of curiousity, which VIP items were you looking to "unlock"?

Ah, wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the clarification.

Whatever i can according to this quote:
Quote:
Retain nearly everything you already purchased or unlocked, including Super Boosters, expansions, and directly purchased character slots.
Which according to the comparison guide would be:
Code:
* Access to City of Heroes Going Rogue™ which includes:

* Four Power Sets (Dual Pistols, Demon Summoning, Kinetic Melee, Electric Control)

* The Going Rogue Alignment System

*Access to Praetoria and all of its zones

*Access to First Ward missions.

* Super Groups

* Chat Channels: Local, Team, Whispers (Tells)

* In-Game Mail

* Character Slots: 12 per server

* Auction House Use

* Mission Architect

* Inventions

Am i reading it correctly or do premium players get little over free players?

Sincerely,

Supraman

While VIP you will get all this, once you drop back down to F2P/Premium it's all about what Paragon Reward Tiers you have filled. Items like 12 slots per server for free and Praetoria access (unless you applied a Going Rogue box code to your account) is only a VIP benefit.

So once i drop down to premium the only thing i would get from using my bootleg edition code would be:
Quote:
Super Groups
Chat Channels: Local, Team, Whispers (Tells)
In-Game Mail
Right? I doubt i would get anything in pentagon rewards for 14 days, 1 month maybe.

Don't know it they treat the BE the same as a box code therefore unlocking Tier 2. Sorry.

Don't be sorry. You have been very helpful, more then i can say for other mmo's. If 1 month is all that is required for tier 2, then i can always get the going rogue:complete box and use that instead. Another option would be to use my gamestop card to get this. Yet another option is to go to my local play & trade and buy the Architect Edition which i believe they were selling it for $15.

Sincerely,

Supraman

Buying retail codes from resellers is the cheapest way to upgrade your account at the moment. They will eventually run out. (If it's an option, I'd recommend getting the VIP starter kit, then Going Rogue, then AE.)

Am i reading it correctly or do premium players get little over free players?
Premium players retain access to anything they have specifically purchased.

So, if you buy access to the Going Rogue alignment system in the Paragon market, you will retain that feature no matter what.

Same goes for any costume pieces, power sets, AT unlocks, etc.

The list you posted there is what VIP players get with their subscription that Premium players have to pay extra for.

Now, if you stay VIP for a certain length of time -OR- buy a certain amount of Paragon Points, you get a Reward Token.

For every month you are VIP or every 1200 points you buy you get a reward token.

You do NOT have to buy the points all at once, so if you buy 400 points 3 separate times you will get a token.

The number of tokens you own determines what you have permanent access to.

Note that you just have to OWN the tokens, you don't need to slot them. You get other things for slotting them.

As far as what you unlock for what tier of reward tokens, I don't remember it all off the top of my head, but you can log into the game and look at the reward tree yourself to find out.

Premium players get either very little more than free players, or a LOT more than free players, depending entirely on whether they have ever been VIP and how many points they've purchased.

The nice thing is, free players actually get a lot of stuff compared to other MMOs with a free play option. Free players get the entire game as it originally launched, and can take their character all the way to the level cap, with very little along the way that they cannot do. They also get 8 years worth of free content expansions. So, a free player today gets more than a subscriber did in 2004.

Also worth noting: To participate in the Incarnate system you MUST be a VIP player. No amount of reward tokens or points purchases will ever unlock that feature to a non-subscriber. That is either a big deal, or nothing to worry about, depending on your perspective.

Make sure it is a NEW copy of it. If it's a copy that someone traded in, they've already used the code and it will be useless to you.

Each code can only be used ONCE.

Most secondhand game stores either don't realize this distinction when it comes to MMO boxes, or they do realize it and don't care.

You can either subscribe for one month or buy $5 worth of Paragon Points, either will grant you another Paragon Rewards Token which would unlock Tier 2 and those additional chat channels. Every 1200 Paragon Points purchased, including bonus ones from bulk purchases, will give you another Reward Token but buying any amount ($5 is the minimum) for the very first time will give you one token.

The Going Rogue box set is definitely a good buy. As well as a month's free time and the accompanying 400 Paragon Points, and two reward tokens (or one, if you've already applied another retail code), you get access to a bunch of stuff that will stay unlocked when you drop back to Premium.

Amazon are currently selling it for $6.74.

I can confirm that a cheap (99 cent) VIP account is, after the 1 month is up, basically a free account with only T1 (1 reward token, same as free). The only advantage to having been VIP is that you could fill up every server with characters, but all will be locked afterwards except for two (you get two unlocks in other words). And you could have costumes that include pieces available only to VIP accounts, but if you change those costumes you'd have to purchase those pieces or not use them. You do not retain access to /tell etc, if you haven't spent money to go beyond tier 1.
