Casual player on budget -- Dark / Rad

The title says it all. I am recently returning and wanted to give a defender a go. I created a rad/rad but it just ... it just wasn't me. I can't explain it, but I really didn't bond to the power sets. I DID like rad as a blaster though, so kept that and dipped my toe into the cheese "

Dark

The idea of having two pets seriously appeals to me. I was primarily a controller player Waaaaay back when, and this is certainly going to play like a Defentroller ( I hope! )

A few things; I KNOW I can get more out of this with the PvP sets and what not but I'm not a PvP player in CoH, I know realistically it's just not going to happen. Also, being casual I didn't put any purple sets or Hamis in.

Having said that, did I miss anything glaringly obvious?

There is a lot to be said about the Dark/Rad combo, and amazingly, it seems work in either primary/secondary combo if differently. I like the powers you chose; they should be effective. Personally, I usually opt for more offensive powers over fighting, but it is what it is.

For the most part, I like the enhancement set selections, but some of the placement is puzzling. I won't sugar-coat, but don't take it as hostility.

Twilight grasp is a huge heal. If you need the recharge bonus, 1 Acc and 5 Doctored Wounds will get you close. I would personally go with one of the accurate heal sets, touch of the nictus is what I favor.

Neutrino bolt should have one or two procs in it. It's not that high of damage but its base fast recharge suggests the devastation hold proc or the achilles heal proc.

I usually put my run stealth procs in one of the enhanceable sprint powers so I can choose: visible, stealth or total invisibility while running superspeed.

Shadowfall is an understated power. The defense is good. Sometimes the resistance to psy damage is overlooked. I try to enhance some of that resistance. The steadfast defense/resistance enhancement is hard for me to pass up, too [ok I see it in tough now]. I really wish I could eight-slot shadow fall. It's that good.

After the big switch in twighlight grasp slotting, IMHO your slotting in howling twlight, while a boost in the recharge set bonus is a terrible waste. Howling twilight needs _no_ accuracy enhancement; it's autohit. Howling Twilight does very minor damage. However, those who know me know that I don't let that power gather any dust. Two level 50 IO recharge reduction enhancers are plenty.

Fearsome stare is fine, but combat jumping really only needs the Luck of the Gambler proc, and if you need the defense IO proc for knockback protection, it does well there as well.

At this point you should be freed up the 5 slot Red Fortune in Manuvers.

Dark Servant should be slotted as much as you can spare with the Clouded Senses. One of fluffy's powes does a hold. Many more do -tohit debuff including Chill of the Night, the PbAoE debuff that makes fluffy one of the best pets.

On up to Aim, you have tactics and defense debuff inherent in your rad blasts. Without a Nuke or a Knockout power, I would substitute Neutron Bomb (five slotted with the positron blasts you had in Howling Twilight) or Petrifying gaze four slotted with the Gaze of the Basilisk that was in Dark Servant

In short the twilight grasp, howling twilight and dark servant suggestions should put you head and shoulders over the current build.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.

Thank you kindly for the advice.

I couldn't imagine hostility for good advice, although this IS the internet.. so maybe I can. You wont from me however

I'm going to try and plug those thoughts in so I can see what it is you're helping with I'm a numbers guy, I need to look at them for them to make sense. Will my defensive numbers be close? I don't know why I focus so hard on getting everything up like I do, but I wanted as little to worry about defensively as possible. I know I lack a bit ( ok a lot ) in dps, but I think perhaps I can outlast instead of out blast?

Wonder-mids power ACTIVATE !

Again, thank you Psylenz.

EDIT: Ok, this is what it looks like. I loose quite a bit o recharge, but everything else is pretty doggone close. From what you tell me it makes my pet an entirely different beasty so that is very nice indeed! I'm guessing my heal is a lot better too now? Here it is with the changes. I changed Combat Jumping for Hover.

The build offers you Range Defense cap, Smash and lethal cap. Darkest night of course is capping everything else out. Now I personally do have a Range cap Dark electric that uses Darkest night to cap out melee and aoe, but once that drops I end up with some issues being at melee range. I have to say the Scorpion shield will really help out in those instances.

I gave you range defense cap because you will pretty much start the fight off in that position. Even if your fired off Pet gaze or dropped darkest night on a group of mobs you will get attack back. It would be nice if those attacks missed you as you began to close the gap and fired off a few more attacks.

With the upcoming changes in i24 you will want to have perma snipe which makes snipe attacks somewhat instant and you will want Atomic Blast which will now be a crashless nuke. So no fear of endurance dropping from that at least. So I added a Kismet accuracy IO which will put you past the 22% threshold required for perma snipe.

I had to modify the sets to put in gift of the ancients for the endurance. You need a minimum of 2 points between usage and recovery, otherwise it will be painful build. Even with this its a bit high on endurance but I think you should be fine as long as your not trying to dump every single power you have as fast as you can.

You can always turn off Darkest Night. Once you pickup Barrier then Darkest night will just be something you use on teams if anything. I have a DP Dark blaster with only S/L capped and Barrier is up fast enough that my S/L defenses along with hit debuffs of dark get me by long enough while barrier is recharging. I eat 1 purple inspiration and I am fine soloing 4/8.

If I was you, I might think about kicking Tactics to the curb. I have a dark/rad fender, and even with Cardiac you can run yourself out of endurance pretty fast. But then I use N-Bolt as a little proc machine gun, then more trying for damage like I do in Cosmic Burst (my main heavy hitter).

So you may wish to recheck your endurance use with all the toggles going, then your recharge speed on powers with your attack chain going. Pretty sure, you find yourself hitting 'Empty' even when you're not in a boss/av fight.

Don't you know that discussion of power selection/slotting can ONLY be based on hearsay, rumor, idle speculation, and bald-faced lies??!? ~Elf_Sniper

I hit 17 last night and It's been great so far. I took the plainguy version ( thank you kindly ) as I WAS struggling with endo.

I see a lot of DFG calls. I guess that is the new AE power level bit? AE was how people were doing it when I was still regularly playing my heroes. I like doing the story arc stuff so looks like I'm solo for a long time. Ah well.

I can certainly see where endo will be a problem with this with a lot of toggles. My WP/Stone tanker ( my main when I left ) and my Emp/Mind 'trolololer ( my original main ) never has that problem New things to learn! It's what's making the Defender so fun right now.
