Ivy Bridge CPU Cooler Ideas?
It would be easier to just tell us what case you got so we don't have to go over a bunch of pages of stuff about what part(s) choices you were going though. Not like it takes up more than a few keystrokes.
Edit: I have that cooler and it works very well. You can spend LOTS more and get very little benefit. Also, those more expensive coolers are HUGE and you'll need lots of skill with needle nose pliers to get stuff in place.
Edit2: Okay found your case, I've never worked with that case, however from the looks of things the CM Hyper 212 Evo should have no issues fitting.

Well, if you want a REALLY expensive hobby. You could go for liquid fluorinert full-immersion cooling.
Anyhoo, your case is a total of 9.3 inches (236mm) deep.
Allowing for motherboard standoffs, motherboard thickness, mounting bracket, and generous space on the back of the motherboard tray, you should be good for that cooler at 159mm in height.
Thermaltake's own site (on the FAQ tab) says the case will fit coolers no larger than 163mm.

Thanks for the info though, I was thinkin it was some fits in my hand unit until I watched the NewEgg review video and was like... O.O
Oh yeah, my primary concern wasn't necessarily the height from the board as much as clearance from the RAM banks. Some reviewers said something about having to reorient the fan during installation.

- Build plexiglass enclosure
- Fill with fluorinert
- Refrigerate
- Assemble components
- Drop motherboard assembly into fluorinert
- Seal enclosure
- Power on.

Anyhow, the Ripjaws memory you specified SHOULD be low-profile enough that the cooler won't be problematic.
If it is, just mount the cooler backwards so the fan's on the opposite side and pulling rather than pushing.
Less optimal, but still workable.
The cooler master unit allows you to height adjust the fan. So you can just raise the fan higher to clear the memory. You can't do that with the Thermaltake Gaia for example. Not all units are built the same. For the price the Cooler master unit is pretty tough to beat. (Sadly the clip to attach the thing isn't so easy)

Collecting on your decision? Good frickin' luck.
You STILL have to hound them incessantly.
Ok, time for a serious game related update:
So keep in mind that I'm only using the GPU that is on the CPU die that is allocated 1Gb of my 16Gb of RAM. I was able to get 7 stable instances to run idle simultaneously. I'd try more, but ran out of my old trial accounts and/or forgot their logins. The game GFX were set to the medium/prefered/whatever-it's-called-that's-just-below-Ultra setting for reference.
I noticed that the temps listed for the CPU/GPU didn't exceed 74C (noting an ambient of 89F) and there wasn't a noticible increase in temp after the 2nd instance.
Looking at the memory usage, it's quite clear that each instance used 1.5Gb of RAM so my system's theoretical limit should be around ten instances.
There was a noticible decrease in FPS once I went beyond about 3/4 instances and had I gone to 10, then I'd probably be sitting at something like 5FPS for each. Note, I had the inactive instances set to 5FPS and the game windowed so that I could see the gadget that was doing the data reporting.
Something that's likely unique to the limitations of the GPU was the inability to Alt-Tab without crashing the game flat out. It got to the point that I was guaranteed to repeat the results everytime, hense why I switched from Full Screen to Windowed for the testing. When I'd originally done the test in Full Screen it flat refused to leave the game! Well actually it Did leave the game, but I couldn't see nor interact with anything else. All I saw was the current instance dropping to the appropriate 5FPS for not being the focused app.
Well that's all I can think of for now. Until I get that descrete GPU atleast.
I'm curious as to which ivy bridge chip you are using. I recently built my brother a i5 3570k based rig for adobe cs6 work and I have used it for the game as well. All it needed was some fast ram and it runs the game beautifully. I think the whole build was around 400 after adding a ssd and psu. It makes me wonder why people ever bother paying an extra 200 if all they play is this game.
Edit: I used arctic silver paste if it helps this discussion, just removed the stock putty on the included cooler with a razor blade and rubbing alcohol dabbed with cotton balls. I only run one instance but after a full hive hamidon raid or the shark week mumbo jumbo I've only peaked at 65C.
I guess it's hard to read that first post, but THIS is the link to the build as it stands. When I get around to it I'm going to reseat the heatsink with paste and using that double twist motion someone mentioned elsewhere to get rid of bubbles. I guess I was waiting to see if I really was going to get the aftermarket cooler, but things are so ($) tight now that a G-string could be considered outerwear. :-/
Sooo weird, I am building almost the exact same PC as you. I have to wait out the weekend to get my case and keyboard but this is what I will have:

Alas no, most of what I'd be editing would be old family/school film archives. I'd already done some using my laptop, but I think I'll use the newer system and redo all that. It's rather difficult to setup correctly because it's not all in NTSC format, but I purchased a universal VCR and a box that auto-adjusts formats whatever way I want. Unfortunately I really don't have the drive space for all that quite yet. I was hoping to see about putting the archives on bluray for presentation purposes and HDD for perma archiving.
So after building this I've run into a snag. It looks like the same environment (my room gets too hot :-X) that had my laptop sitting in the 60C idle range has this new tower in the 40C idle range. I ran a full system security scan and it jumped to nearly 80C! In the meantime, I'm going to look into reseating the factory cooler and thermal paste, but does anyone know if say this cooler will physically fit my build? For that matter, does anyone have a better recomendation for a cooler? Keep in mind, right now the Intel CPU is handling the graphics as well until I can save up for the nVidia card so I don't want to get this cooler installed only to find out later that my GPU won't fit!
